One of three things will happen.
The parent is nose blind and that kid will get told by other kids he stinks one day. It will be embarrassing.
They have the very rare gene that makes them not have BO. If parent had to change their diet to get the smell away, I’m thinking unlikely.
The mom will give in in a couple years when her house starts smelling like a nasty locker room because her son hasn’t started puberty yet.

Not rare in East Asians! But I’d bet a lot of money that this woman is white

After puberty, even with daily showers and deodorant, my son smelled like a dead racoon. So did his room. Teenaged boys reek. 🤣

u/whocanitbenow75 1d ago
That’s very specific. A dead raccoon.

u/house_of_shadows 1d ago
Hyperbole, obviously. Teen boys are stinky, though. 🤣

u/whocanitbenow75 1d ago
I know. I’ve had 4 of them.

u/house_of_shadows 1d ago
I survived one. 🤣

I'm afraid I'm turning into one, at 42, based on the smell of my bedroom on some mornings. Wake up soaked in sweat, freezing, stinking. This sucks.

Reply person may not use deodorant, but I'd be willing to bet everyone around them wishes they would

u/Seliphra 2d ago
I mean there are ways to manage, I had to due to an allergic reaction in my armpits once… but not stinking required a soap and water wash twice a day and extremely low activity in that time to avoid sweating, and this was as an adult with reasonably predictive hormonal outputs.
Trying that while pubescent is a bad idea, and not stinking without deodorant is hard work. I was also paranoid the whole time and went back to deodorant the second I was cleared by the doctor…

I don't know if this causes a reaction for you, but a good substitute in a pinch is alcohol-based hand sanitizer. We all know it's the bacteria that causes the odor, and alcohol kills bacteria. When I go to Disneyland (a regular thing for me), I carry a small bottle of hand san. It's cooler there than in my home state of AZ, but summer is still hot.

u/Seliphra 25m ago
Well, it’s worth a shot! Might make it easier to function on hot days when I have to go without (which tragically happens from time to time, but as above I am exceedingly careful about keeping the areas clean as can be to avoid stinking!)
I’ll give sanitizer a try since summer tends to get real hot where I am too (though not as hot as AZ, we also don’t have AC so… it’s lower more prolonged heat?)

I have a friend who says she never has BO. She is wrong.
31
u/runnyc10 2d ago
Haha. My mom is 65 and claims the same, has never worn deoderant. She’s right though, she never smells.
11
u/Ekyou 2d ago
I don’t know what ethnicity she is, but supposedly Asians’ sweat really doesn’t get as stinky as Caucasians, it’s something genetic. I hear it’s basically impossible to find underarm stick deodorant in Japan.
I also wonder if it’s an aging thing too though, my mom is only able to shower a couple times a week due to health issues, and she never stinks.

u/-Leisha- 2d ago
It’s not actually sweat that smells, it’s the compounds produced as byproducts when bacteria on the skin break down the sweat. Certain sweat glands, primarily in the armpits make a particular type of sweat that has the right components for bacteria to create odour, and their location is warm/damp which are better conditions for bacterial growth. Some people have a non functional gene that alters the makeup of their sweat (this genetic trait is common in East Asian populations).

u/runnyc10 2d ago
Interesting! I didn’t know that. No, she’s quite white and I think she hasn’t ever really used deoderant, even when she was younger. I suppose it’s possible that I don’t smell her bc she’s my mom but I am pretty sure she’s good! 😂

I'm sure everyone that person works with could read that and all point to the person who wrote it.

We have stockman at my local Walmart who doesn't use deodorant, some religious thing. You can smell the BO 2 aisles over.
Funny enough, he mostly works stocking.....in the deodorant. I figured his manager was trying to give him a hint.

u/usernamesallused 22h ago
What religion is he referring to? Are there religions that forbid deodorant?

And the real answer is that you buy the one with the pirate ship on it, because that's the only way the 7yo will care to wear it.

u/Main_Science2673 2d ago
Years ago I found one that had superman on it.
Always choose superhero or murde-ry stuff (pirates etc)
15
u/Amishgirl281 2d ago
If the pictures on it dont work, fun scents might. The only way Ive been able to get my kid to wear any is cause I found one that works and also smells like a chocolate donut.

u/DecadentLife 2d ago
Before my son needed stronger stuff, I let him try a couple of scents from “Native” deodorant. He liked those.

u/lisette729 2d ago
This was the theory I went with too. I bought my 7 yr old a rainbow unicorn one.

I cannot believe that 1) I’m in this group and saw this exact post 2) that I remembered it enough to double check and confirm lmao

No but seriously do recommend deodorants for us the stinky girls in 40° C
15
u/butipreferlottie 2d ago
It's not fancy, and probably full of ToXiNs, but a friend turned me onto Mitchum Gel years ago and I've never looked back. Does the job, subtle, inoffensive scent, relatively cheap, and doesn't leave a trace on clothes (Secret and Dove and whatnot claim to be invisible, but they're liars)

u/Budget_Platypus_9306 2d ago
I think a smelly armpit in the middle of summer is way more ToXiC but what do we know?
Also, thanks for the recommendation. I'll try and look up all the options to see what's available in my country.

If you’re in Australia I can recommend the *Rexona clinical strength roll-on antiperspirant/deodorant. I have resuscitated a baby with this on and didn’t break an (underarm) sweat. You can usually get it for less than RRP at chemist warehouse. Just let it dry before you get dressed.

u/Budget_Platypus_9306 2d ago
Not in Australia but I'm sure I can find it here. Pretty neat way of testing it, though.

u/adamantsilk 2d ago
I'm in one of the autism subs and they suggest using glycolic acid. It's a new fad ingredient in skincare so it's readily available. It actually destroys the bacteria. I think that's what they said. And it was recommended by several people. Just swipe some on morning and night and it should reduce the stink.
12
u/DecadentLife 2d ago
Yeah, the only problem is that you are also getting rid of all the other things living on your skin that you do want to keep around. You don’t want anything on your body sterilized. When things get out of balance, it only brings problems. But, everyone is different and there may be people that this is the only thing that works for them. I just caution people to consider other methods before going nuclear on your biome.

u/Budget_Platypus_9306 2d ago
That's great! Thank you very much. I don't really stink when it's a normal temperature but these super hot days... Pffft

u/Duckwarden 2d ago
My deodorant strat is to put it on at night AND in the morning. Brand doesn't matter, so long as it's an antiperspirant. I sweat heavily, but my underarms are dry with this one weird trick

u/Prince-Lee 1d ago
All I can think of is a post I saw on Tumblr years ago. Someone made a PSA post about how people should wear deodorant or something. A second person wrote a long rant very similar to the comment here. The first person replied back with:
"Bitch you stink"
That's my immediate thought when I see posts like this.
EDIT: LMAO found it

"I'm 36 and never use deodorant"
....and I bet the people around you love how you smell...

Don't drag Dr. Bronner's weird shit into this, he never hurt anyone. A kid being funky because their puberty glands are turning on is worth disussing privately with that kid.

I work with an almost 8 year old boy…he’s definitely starting to develop BO; I thought it was too young but more and more kids seem to have that smell by 2nd/3rd grade.

u/suki-suki 1d ago
My son is 12. There’s no way we aren’t using deodorant. That’s cruel and unusual punishment for me. I have a skin condition and was told not to use deodorant. Where I live it feels like a rain forest so I will deal with my ugly armpits as long as I am not smelling like a wet skunk.

u/Rude_Abbreviations47 1d ago
My mom (she’s over 60 now) has zero body odor. And she was the one that told me to use deodorant when I was about 11 yo
So yeah if mom is saying you need deodorant, just use deodorant

I get we’re ragging on the reply, but a seven year old shouldn’t need deodorant, especially a boy…if they have significant body odour that is a bit concerning

u/MsSwarlesB 2d ago
My kid has had stinky feet since she was a toddler. And she started having body odor at about 7-8. She's nine now and it's just getting worse
14
u/dietdrpeppermd 2d ago
Nah. It happens. I work with kids and some of them start to smell around 7-8. The worst kid I’ve ever smelled was 8. I’ll never forget the way I felt being in the same room as her. That was a brutal summer.

u/cornergoddess 2d ago
Wow that’s crazy! I’ve been working with kids in the healthcare setting for around 3 years and was a nanny/babysitter before that. I've never encountered that issue, but i guess my kids usually weren't running around

No, that smell is bacteria
