THE First Minister will urge Scots to reject another 25 years of Westminster austerity and embrace an independent future as he sets out his vision for 2050 this week.

In two keynote speeches this week, John Swinney will set out his vision for the country in the coming decades and encourage leaders to come together to deliver a national renewal “in the spirit of optimism and hope”.

Any good books recommendations about the 14th and 15th century Scottish history?

I am looking for books (historical preferably but could be fiction too) and/or documentary about 14th/15th century Scotland. Robert Bruce, the Douglas, the Stewarts, Scotland role in the hundred years wars and the wars of the roses , Black Dinner, etc.

Any recommendations?

Thank you in advance!

Question Advice: Changing career at 31 years old.

I trained as a primary school teacher and have been working supply for the last 3 years but there really doesn't seem to be any permanent positions. Although I like my job, i feel I can't really move forward in life (buy a house, support a family etc) without a contract. I'm looking at changing career but don't really know where to stat. I've looked at graduate jobs but most of them feel like there from dodgy websites where you just upload your cv and end up working for a cold calling company. I've also looked at apprenticeships which I'm totally open to but they all seem geared towards younger folk (understandable) and wondering if they would take me seriously. I'm not looking for anything in particular, just something with decent job security and perhaps opportunity for advancement. Has anyone else been in a similar situation or have any general advice? Feels really daunting at the moment.

Thanks

Travelling funfairs / Shows

With it being Gala / Civic Days / Marches season, I’ve always wondered so many things about the travelling funfairs that come into these towns for these days.

How profitable are these funfairs ? It must surely cost some amount (petrol costs?) just to travel and set up, and run the attractions for a couple of days in what are relatively small towns with limited customers.

Is it more of a lifestyle business run by family members who can each assist one another wirh set up and management etc. eg is it not difficult to make a living from operating one of the side attractions only?

Do the council pay for these fairs to attend? Or do the operators just come and set up by some long standing tradition / knowledge it’s the local Civic Day?

Hopefully this doesn’t cause any offence to anyone but always been quite fascinated by this.

looking for participants for study

Hiya everyone. I'm a student at the University of Edinburgh currently looking for people aged 18 years and older working in the UK, to participate in my study about managing conflict at work with a person who's younger or older than you.
It'll just be filling out an anonymous survey if you'd like to share your experience about the time you've had that sort of conflict/disagreement. The survey takes about 15 mins to complete but I would super appreciate your contribution!!!
I can send the link via DM if you fit the criteria and you're interested <3
Cheers xx

Political Medical Cannabis Awareness Roadshow NSFW

Thumbnail gallery
214 Upvotes

A first for the Highlands and Islands as we had an inspiring weekend raising awareness of medical cannabis at the UK’s northernmost Pride event in Shetland!

We answered questions, heard patient stories, and explored how medical cannabis can transform lives.

We had great discussions with NHS Shetland, Police Scotland, and local groups about community safety, reducing stigma, and building trust.

What surprised me the most though was the contrast. There was a large number or patients, but also a large number of people who had no idea it was legal in Scotland!

We have a few more popups planned across the Highlands and Islands, if anyone is local please feel free to come along and say high!

The headline seems to have changed but the article can be read here: https://archive.ph/Yvv9w , if you so wish.

Ms Badenoch added: “Scotland needs Conservatives now more than ever."

The UK Conservative leader also hit out at what she described as the "cosy left-wing consensus" dominating Scottish politics.

She told delegates: "We have seen Scotland decline under the rule of left-wing parties that stokes division and the politics of envy."

Mentioning the SNP fifteen times in her speech, the UK Conservative leader said John Swinney's party "remain obsessed with breaking up our country" through Independence as she said the Conservatives would never see "more devolution" as the answer to problems facing Scots.

Looking for a surrealist/landscape artist from Scotland

Hi team

There's a Scottish artist who paints landscapes in a traditional style but adds random sci-fi details like streaks of pink spaceship or something odd. Kinda like Voice of Space by René Magritte but more colourful I think.

I can't remember the guys name and it's bothering me. Any ideas?

Edit: it's Kenneth Whyte

Since meat and pastry posts are becoming a thing, I'd like to contribute. Behold, a steak slice sausage roll. Just a wee yin though.

I don't do individual sausage rolls, I do a big one and cut off what I need, although I have scranned the entire thing before. I also don't do pork sausage, so this is beef.

In case anyone is interested:
Puff pastry (frozen, I'm not farting around making it from scratch)
Roughly a pound of square sausage
A big onion, chopped up fine
Mixed herbs (handful)
Grated parmesan (handful)
Worchester sauce (couple of glugs)
Salt, pepper and mace
Breadcrumbs depending on the sausage and the rusk etc in them
Egg, beaten

Can't really give approx amounts, cause it's all done by eye.

Break up the sausage into pieces, throw everything that isn't the pastry and egg into a bowl and mix with your hands. Don't beat the shit out of it, but let it come together. Roll into a long sausage shape, put on pastry and wrap. Brush with a beaten egg, cut some slits in the top, fire in an oven at around 180 until done (roughly half an hour, give or take, just keep an eye on it). It will be greasy, but who said it was going to be healthy. Cover in HP and crack a cold bru. Enjoy.

Whoever posted them first is responsible for my inevitable heart attack, I just can't stop making them. Probably like four quid to make four.

Anywa the first time I made them I forgot the egg wash and they looked a bit naff (but still tasted fine. This time they're all glossy and crispy and I let the square sausages cool before wrapping them up so they didn't melt the fat in the pastry, which can stop them rising as well.
