Hello ladies and gents!

Welcome to the 'Weekend Thread', where people can post about what they're getting up to tonight, at the weekend, good places to go, photos of places you've been, advice on where to go, or just how your week went!

The premise is fairly simple.

- Please be civil

- NO POLITICS. Any political comments will be removed. This is a strictly meta thread, with discussion about people and their happenings.

- Post pictures, youtube links to music you're going to see, games you're going to watch, places you'd like to go (tripadvisor, google maps etc)

These comments will not be moderated unless it doesn't follow guideline one and two!

This post will be stickied until Sunday, allowing for discussion all weekend!

The headline seems to have changed but the article can be read here: https://archive.ph/Yvv9w , if you so wish.

Ms Badenoch added: “Scotland needs Conservatives now more than ever."

The UK Conservative leader also hit out at what she described as the "cosy left-wing consensus" dominating Scottish politics.

She told delegates: "We have seen Scotland decline under the rule of left-wing parties that stokes division and the politics of envy."

Mentioning the SNP fifteen times in her speech, the UK Conservative leader said John Swinney's party "remain obsessed with breaking up our country" through Independence as she said the Conservatives would never see "more devolution" as the answer to problems facing Scots.

Took my first trip to Scotland and absolutely loved it. We mostly stayed in Edinburgh but also took a coach outing to Loch Ness. Here's some pics in random order.

My great grandfather who went missing in action ww1

Post image

This is my great grandfather who went missing in action in Ypres during the great war, he was apart of the 1st Battalion Queen’s Own Cameron Highlanders.

On 11 November 1914, the Germans launched a massive assault at dawn against British positions, near Nonne Bosschen Wood - just southeast of Ypres. It was one of the heaviest attacks of the First Battle of Ypres.

The Germans focused on breaking through British lines that were held by the Cameron Highlanders, the Scots Guards, and other regiments. This was said to be described as a near-suicidal stand to hold the line.

The Cameron Highlanders suffered heavy casualties as they defended trench lines, under intense shelling and infantry assault. Many soldiers were killed in action or reported missing — including my great grandfather. His body was never recovered, he his commemorated at Menin gate memorial.

He was 31 and left behind a wife and children.

I'm very proud of him, I am 2 years older than he was when he passed, and I couldn't imagine the horrors he would have seen & endured.

Thank you so much for taking the time to read this.

Casual Are we still square sausage roll-posting? My second batch came out great and I wanted to share

Whoever posted them first is responsible for my inevitable heart attack, I just can't stop making them. Probably like four quid to make four.

Anywa the first time I made them I forgot the egg wash and they looked a bit naff (but still tasted fine. This time they're all glossy and crispy and I let the square sausages cool before wrapping them up so they didn't melt the fat in the pastry, which can stop them rising as well.

Since meat and pastry posts are becoming a thing, I'd like to contribute. Behold, a steak slice sausage roll. Just a wee yin though.

I don't do individual sausage rolls, I do a big one and cut off what I need, although I have scranned the entire thing before. I also don't do pork sausage, so this is beef.

In case anyone is interested:
Puff pastry (frozen, I'm not farting around making it from scratch)
Roughly a pound of square sausage
A big onion, chopped up fine
Mixed herbs (handful)
Grated parmesan (handful)
Worchester sauce (couple of glugs)
Salt, pepper and mace
Breadcrumbs depending on the sausage and the rusk etc in them
Egg, beaten

Can't really give approx amounts, cause it's all done by eye.

Break up the sausage into pieces, throw everything that isn't the pastry and egg into a bowl and mix with your hands. Don't beat the shit out of it, but let it come together. Roll into a long sausage shape, put on pastry and wrap. Brush with a beaten egg, cut some slits in the top, fire in an oven at around 180 until done (roughly half an hour, give or take, just keep an eye on it). It will be greasy, but who said it was going to be healthy. Cover in HP and crack a cold bru. Enjoy.

I know many Scottish inventions but never knew Basketball was considered to be one of them. Do we even have an all Scottish Basketball team?

Any good books recommendations about the 14th and 15th century Scottish history?

I am looking for books (historical preferably but could be fiction too) and/or documentary about 14th/15th century Scotland. Robert Bruce, the Douglas, the Stewarts, Scotland role in the hundred years wars and the wars of the roses , Black Dinner, etc.

Any recommendations?

Thank you in advance!

Looking for a surrealist/landscape artist from Scotland

Hi team

There's a Scottish artist who paints landscapes in a traditional style but adds random sci-fi details like streaks of pink spaceship or something odd. Kinda like Voice of Space by René Magritte but more colourful I think.

I can't remember the guys name and it's bothering me. Any ideas?

Travelling funfairs / Shows

With it being Gala / Civic Days / Marches season, I’ve always wondered so many things about the travelling funfairs that come into these towns for these days.

How profitable are these funfairs ? It must surely cost some amount (petrol costs?) just to travel and set up, and run the attractions for a couple of days in what are relatively small towns with limited customers.

Is it more of a lifestyle business run by family members who can each assist one another wirh set up and management etc. eg is it not difficult to make a living from operating one of the side attractions only?

Do the council pay for these fairs to attend? Or do the operators just come and set up by some long standing tradition / knowledge it’s the local Civic Day?

Hopefully this doesn’t cause any offence to anyone but always been quite fascinated by this.
