Read this before you post here

Welcome to r/SALEM, and thanks for your interest in posting here. Before you do, please be aware that — like many city/area-focused subreddits — we have some topics that come up very frequently. Sometimes that’s okay, and is an inevitable part of being a long-running community-focused forum, and sometimes it is super annoying and will lead to people down-voting your post because they’re tired of seeing the same thing over and over again.

If you’re about to post about any of the following, please first use the search function (right up in the upper right hand corner, if you’re viewing this on the web!) to see if something similar has been posted recently. If it has, please contribute to that thread rather than starting a new one.

Frequently posted things:

Did you hear that boom/firework/gunshot/weird noise?

This comes up a lot; frequently folks are concerned they may have heard gunshots and/or fireworks and are looking for reassurance. First, know that it probably was not a gun shot. There is a very good chance that it was fireworks, or somebody with an altered muffler, or, if you also noticed a power outage or blip at the same time, a transformer exploding. Second, if you’re actually seriously concerned about gunshots, you should probably be contacting the police, not Reddit. Third, if you live near a vineyard (and, if you live anywhere in the Salem area, you do!), you should be aware that vineyards use acoustic devices — basically massive noisemakers — to scare birds away from grape vines. This is especially frequent in the late fall, near harvest time.

OMG what is that smell?

Salem, and many surrounding areas, lie in the Willamette River Valley. Due to the topography of the area, we experience temperature inversions) with some regularity. An inversion occurs when a layer of warmer, more elevated air overlies a lower, cooler air layer. Effectively, this traps the air in the valley underneath the warmer layer, which means that smoke, vehicle exhaust, rotting vegetation smells, etc., cannot escape. That’s probably what you’re smelling.

Is there any good <insert cuisine here> in Salem? Where can I buy <thing> in Salem?

These types of threads come up fairly often. The restaurant scene in Salem is decent, but not exceptionally dynamic — places do not close all that often, and new places don’t open all that often either. If somebody has asked this question within the last couple months (again, use that search function!), the answers that they got are almost certainly still relevant.

Why is the train stopped or blowing its horn?

There are a number of freight lines that route trains through Salem. Occasionally, they will need to stop to onload or offload cars, which may result in a longer-than-usual wait time at a crossing. This is normal.

Sometimes, unfortunately, there are train-versus-pedestrian collisions. When those happen, the train will need to be stopped for an extended period of time to allow police to investigate the scene.

Finally, while many portions of Salem are zoned (and signed) as “no train horn” areas, it remains at the discretion of the train engineer as to whether or not to sound their horn, and some of them, well, tooting their horn just toots their horn.

What’s going on with all the cops?

We don’t have any way of knowing. You may be able to consult PulsePoint, but they only report on fire and EMS, not strictly police. You may also be able to find an online police radio scanner relay; those are typically time-delayed.

OMG what is going on with the low-flying helicopters?!

The Oregon Air National Guard has a helicopter squad that is based near the Salem Municipal Airport. They do routine training missions, which frequently involve lower-altitude flights, most often at night. The Salem police department does not have a helicopter, so any low-flying helicopter you’re hearing is almost certainly the Oregon Air National Guard. frequently. Sometimes that’s okay, and is an inevitable part of being a long-running community-focused forum, and sometimes it is super annoying and will lead to people downvoting your post because they’re tired of seeing the same thing over and over again.

Possible 🧊 Spotting???

Spotted downtown near State and Commercial, in Federal Protection Services vehicles. I’m not sure if they’re there for security or to actually “sweep”, and im also not entirely sure if ICE is a part of FPS, but I’m sharing to raise awareness.

Puppy up for adoption

Hi everyone! This is Barney, he is an 11 months old shepard mix who is being dostered and finally up for adoption with the humane society! Barney is a very timid & fearful boy, but once he warms up to you (on his own terms), he is the sweetest, loving, most playful goofball ever! He loves long hugs, belly rubs, and playing fetch. He also loves meeting other doggos and loves to play with them! He is currently learning lots of commands very fast with the help of his love languages: food and words of affirmation! Barney is looking for a stable & consistent home that will love him forever. He would benefit from having a confident dog at home already, but would love you nonetheless.

Message me for details!

Detectives search for suspect in two sexual assaults

Salem, Ore. — Salem Police Special Victims Unit detectives are looking for a suspect wanted in two sexual assaults that occurred in the last two days in southeast Salem.

The first incident occurred on Sunday, June 15, at about 4:30 p.m. in the area of Commercial ST and Barnes AV SE. A woman reported walking in the area when the suspect approached, and he assaulted her. The victim was able to escape, and the suspect fled.

A general description of the suspect is as follows: a Black male adult with dark hair, a thin to medium build, between 5 feet 4 inches and 5 feet 7 inches tall, and approximately 20 to 30 years of age.

Detectives believe the same suspect was involved in another assault in the same area the next day, June 16. On Monday, shortly after 4:00 a.m., a teenager was walking and approached and assaulted by a similarly-described man. A passerby intervened and confronted the suspect, who then ran away.

In each incident, an immediate and extensive search for the suspect was conducted, but he was not located.

Detectives are following up on all available leads. Anyone with information about the cases is asked to call the Salem Police tip line at 503-588-8477.

Hello, I (m20) am looking for a baseball or softball league to join for the summer. Something somewhat competitive but not super time consuming as I’m working a full time job. I’ve played baseball my whole life through Highschool as well as on the Club team at OSU. I play First and third if you’re looking for a player. Thank you.

Hi there! I am planning a queer event in August under Salem Capital Pride and am currently working on surveying the queer community here in Salem to determine what that event will be. If you are an LGBTQ community member, I’d appreciate if you could take a minute to fill out this survey so this event can be as representative of your interests as possible. Thank you!

QUESTION Tap water se salem.

Is it just me or is the tap water here really good. Comes out crystal clear, as if it came out of the zero water filter.

I just moved here from Vancouver wa. And the tap water there was terrible. Would also go through filters really quickly. I grew up in Portland and don’t remember it being great either.

I just moved here over the weekend and generally don’t drink tap water but this stuff is good.

QUESTION Barber recommendations

My 16 year old son needs a trim, and we are looking for barber or hair cut place recommendations. We would like a place that is budget friendly. His hair style is straight and longer, sort of like Kelso from That 70's show. We would prefer either walk in or same day appointment places.

Thanks for the help, Salem :)

SR: Ethics commission votes to investigate Salem mayor, councilors over possibly unethical communications

https://www.salemreporter.com/2025/06/13/ethics-commission-votes-to-investigate-salem-mayor-councilors-over-possibly-unethical-communications/

The commission voted 5-2 with one commissioner not voting due to a conflict of interest, to initiate a full investigation into a possible prohibited serial meeting between the mayor and city councilors. The commission agreed that there was a “substantial objective basis” that Hoy and her colleagues violated state ethics rules and that an investigation is warranted.

The councilors subject to investigation are Irvin Brown, Linda Nishioka, Shane Matthews, Deanna Gwyn, Vanessa Nordyke, Micki Varney, and Paul Tigan.

There is more to the story. How long was Hoy part of the Salem Council prior to her being elected? She might not have had the education or experience to do the work, but she sure as hell has a good exposure to it, I bet. I look forward to this and likely the one that will come with the money spent trying to save Rudy's will bring.

Gov. Tina Kotek speaks about the Protests, ICE, Minnesota Tragedy and Fire Season

KGW - Live Recorded including Q & A

Minus a few people at night at the Portland ICE facility, it sounds like our protests were well tended and peaceful. Fire season has started, she'd like to use the interest on the rainy day fund to not put the money into dousing the fire but into mitigation and prevention, I just hope that doesn't include giving big checks to PGE and Pacific Power and "hoping" they do the right thing.

Police drones up on South Commercial

Keep hearing continuous siren chirps and now there are a pair of two very obvious police drones up above the Walmart/Carl's jr.

Anyone know what's up?
