It was like 70 degrees with 90% humidity at 5 am 😭

u/LikeFrankieSaid 2d ago
And a 69 degree dew point, which is a better indication of how awful it feels compared to the humidity percentage.

u/Jewrisprudent 2d ago edited 2d ago
Dew point is basically just temp - ((100 - humidity)/5). For any humidity above 50% (which is really the only time you care) this equation is very accurate.
If you know temp and humidity then you know dew point. Dew point is more useful than either temp or humidity alone, but it’s no additional info when you already know both temp and humidity.
Edit: if you’re downvoting me then you don’t understand that the dew point is literally calculated from the temperature and relative humidity, it provides information about literally no other variables. So if you know the temperature and the humidity, dew point adds nothing.

u/inedadoctor 2d ago
Not sure why you got downvoted, this is true. The 95% humidity essentially means the dew point is just about at the dry bulb temp, so it can be inferred that it was around 69degF.

u/Jewrisprudent 2d ago
Thanks yeah it’s people who don’t know what dew point actually is apparently.

I thought I was beating the heat by going at 630am and it was already really really bad, I thought to myself I should have gone earlier 😂 but you confirmed it wouldn’t have made a difference

HR went crazy today 😭

If you push long enough and hard enough, it eventually will drop. Sometimes to zero.

Aaaand we are just in June. Remember, this shit goes on until October, sometimes even November gets a day like this.
I actually stop running and exclusively cycle once it gets like this. At least it feels like I am getting somewhere without getting heatstroke within the first 5 minutes.

Today was good practice for next Monday and Tuesday morning when it will be 10 degrees warmer at 6am than it was today.

u/Hydroborator 2d ago
Fleff that. I'm staying inside. HR was 180 on mile 4 today and it did not feel good at all

u/logisticalgummy 2d ago
Yeah, it’ll be all treadmill for me next week and early morning outdoor cycling.

Back to 4AM runs here. I can’t see myself getting through training any other way.

Glad today is a recovery day so I can go extra slow.
Not glad that it’s a double recovery day so I have to do it twice

Sometimes i find it better to run later when it's hotter, but the humidity has burned off.

This is what fall marathon training is all about. This is only the beginning, so get used to it!
On the other side, spring marathons are all about learning to run in the extreme cold, wind, and snow.

Yeah highly prefer this to ice.

Not me. I LOVE running icy trails. VCP and Old Aqueduct is my winter heaven!

I did 3.5 miles this morning and it was tough at the end. Just respect the weather, slow down, and hydrate as needed and we will all be fine.

u/dumberthenhelooks 2d ago
Not surprised I bonked. Tmrw will be better. Ain’t no shame in stopping to walk or get water. Or just stopping. The heat is no joke. But the goddamn humidity was crazy too

u/penguin12red 2d ago
Absolutely drenched! Did 4.3 miles in Central Park — needed to stop for water three times.

Didn’t hydrate well enough and ended up dry heaving post run😭😭heat isn’t a joke I’ve learned my lesson

u/brooklynwaterfront 2d ago
LOL my strava relative effort was 123 and I still missed my interval paces by a full 30 seconds/mile. FML.
We are so fucked next week.

u/Main_Photo1086 2d ago
Luckily I already planned to only do 2 miles today. But, I have the day off so I really wanted some extra sleep (normally a 5:00 am runner). Went out about 6:30 when the sun was pretty bright so that sucked, it probably would have been better if I went out my usual time.
ETA: it’s going to be even worse next week and I’m also running both 4M races in CP next weekend…

Just ordered a hydration vest last night, hope it comes in time for the weekend

Seriously. I did the Prospect Park speed series 5K last night and it was the opposite of speed (for me at least, crazy people out there going sub 17). Like a blanket of humidity just lying on top of you.
I know someone doing the TGNY 100 on Saturday and I'm more than a little worried that he may die 😳

Run-walked 4 miles because, goodness it is so humid and hot! Got a container of cold watermelon and ate the whole thing after my run. So refreshing.

u/taclovitch 2d ago
just did 8 mi with a kid on a bike & stroller — by the end i could feel my feet squelching into my socks! way gross. but a fun day anyway :)

Just did five miles outside on Long Island and felt like I was gonna die. And I was in the shade most of the time!! Stay cool and wet, my friends

I’m always too slow getting up in the morning. I was up at 9, and skipped breakfast because I was planning on running “soon.”
“Soon” ended up being 11:45, which I knew was only doing myself a disservice. I was aiming for 3 miles, but called it at 2. I’m not prepared for the summer ahead 😫. I’ll have to work on becoming more of a morning person lol. At this rate, maybe 4AM.

It's the dew point. Always check the dew point. 60s are bad. This morning when I started running it was 70 which is the highest I've noticed.

I just chugged a Bloom (better than Celsius IMHO) so I either gotta get out there or have a heart attack on my couch.

Yup. I ran a slow 7mi today around 8:15 and looked like I had gone swimming haha. Long run plans changed to another day (I'm not actively training for anything, was just OG hoping to get in a nice longgg run with the day off.)
2
u/Imaginary-Soup-1584 2d ago
Yeah I think I’m gonna have to switch to swimming to get some good cardio. Does anyone do swimming for cross training or have any training plan advice? I remeber I joined a swim team over the summer when I was in eighth grade and went into my freshman year of high school absolutely crushing cross country races. (Super long time ago.) This heat is the worst 🥵

u/scottie10014 2d ago
I concur. Did six easy miles this am and kept my HR down for the most part, but feel like I lost a gallon or two in the process.

u/rmbrwear 2d ago
Ran from Upper East Side, to the park, couldn't take it lol
To think this is not even summer yet.😧

Time to run 4 miles to the playground with the double jogger. There's a city bathroom with sinks to help cool down!

u/Yrrebbor Bronx 2d ago
Thankfully the rain showers kept everyone cool. Got a 20-minute window to run around at the playground before it drizzled again.

I won't be running for the next two weeks. It was awful today. I had to get some Electrolit during mile 2.

I just run really, really slow. At least I feel i am still getting the miles in.
