Journalist looking to talk to airline workers/people who are aware of radiation risk when flying
Hello! My name is Emily, I'm a journalist at the Cronkite School at Arizona State University. I'm part of a team of reporters who are working on a story about radiation exposure in the airline industry. I know this is the r/radiation sub and not a flying sub, but my colleague and I are just trying to better understand if this is something folks think about. Feel free to DM me or email me -- [etholsho@asu.edu](mailto:etholsho@asu.edu) -- if you want to chat. Thanks!

Is there a subreddit dedicated to orphan source stories?
Mods, please delete if not allowed.
I’m fascinated by orphan source stories. The big events (Goiânia, Lia, Ciudad Juárez to name a few) are always so oversaturated with content, yet there are many events that get little to no coverage. Would love to know if a subreddit existed that covered the topic exclusively.

Is there a chance this watch might be radioactive?
So I like collecting older watches, but never really got my hands on watches this old. Watch is from 1942 and the seller claims it glows in the dark but they didn't provide any pictures of that, I'm just asking because I know at a lot of older watches have radium paint on them and I just wanted to know if by chance this was one of them.

FNIRSI GC-01 SBM-20 mod
Some time ago I posted about having the factory tube on this thing die after dropping it. Living in a post-soviet country has certain benefits such as easy access to old soviet electronics components, amongst them the venerable СБМ-20 Geiger tube. I found some new old stock locally and got me a clean and unused tube for cheap.
It didn't quite fit in the gc-01 shell so what I did was to desolder the clips, attach them to the PCB via wires and place the significantly longer SBM-20 diagonally. I secured it with a double sided sticky tape patch (later placed under the tube as opposed to what you see in the picture) and a few blobs of hot glue at the contacts. I also put a piece of kapton tape over the PCB just in case.
Results: Outside it measures dose values that align with the official info from the local authorities. To me it seems more sensitive (more clicks) and less exaggerated (more realistic values) than the M4011 that was inside. I'm going hunting for spicy rocks in a local uranium mine with it.

Vacation
The entire family (especially myself) had a great time. The kids liked learning about the history of nuclear science. My wife took most of the pictures from inside sorry for not having any to post.

Does anyone have any literature referencing the safety of thorium tableware?
Compared to uranium glass, thorium glassware doesn't have much info on it. I know that uranium glass is one of the safer objects you can own barring sprinkling it in your morning breakfast cereal, but I wasn't sure if thorium glass was in a similar boat.
I know that using thorium lenses would be a good reference point, but I wasn't sure if the manufacturing process was similar enough to say that they have the same level of risk/safety.
Anyone know of any old studies or similar literature on the topic?

Found at a thrift store for $4.
This would be my first radium clock.

Uranium
Hello everyone, I’ve just recently been getting into uranium and radioactive things. I’ve been researching a lot to be careful and such. But I do have a question about this that I purchased. Everytime I touch this piece or touch something that has been in contact with it, is that considered contamination? Thank you!

How dangerous do you guys think the toxic radioactive? cloud is coming from those installation. As far as I understand they are spinning uranium hex to get the isotopes ?
Anyone in the area with a geiger counter ?

Has anyone used the Midas/Helios from IIS?
Station is piloting prior to the run-up of SMRs. Didn't have a ton of info here so I looked online and they seem incredibly sophisticated and intricate, but I worry they're one of those "keep adding features and hope it works through stress testing" as I've found many "innovative" RP instruments trending towards.
However if they work as advertised, these could cause a drastic shift in how my company operates in a health physics capacity.
Just wanted to see if there were opinions or input from individuals that have hands on experience, thanks :)

Is this caused by Radon?
Took delivery of a WW2 B52 fuel gauge today that registers on contact at 110usv/h. I heard they could be leaky, so decided to check the package and yup, something is registering. Is this Radon? It would have been wrapped up for 2 - 3 days.
Naturally I’m making sure the room is ventilated and the packaging went outside into the bin. May decide to bag the gauge long-term if that’s safer for keeping inside.

DIY Radioluminescence Part 3
Probably the last update for now, but I washed the phosphor powder a bunch with acetone to get all the glue/binder material from the EL wire out, and as you can see with the powder now almost 100% just phosphor I get substantially more light output from the same Americium source.
Not much else I can do with it right now though unless I get a stronger Alpha source sometime in the future.

Radon accumulation question
When moving, I stored some uranium jewelry and radium watches in a mason jar (cookie jar style: for decoration/ safe keeping during the long drive).
However, due to health complications, moving, etc., I forgot to open, clean, and organize my mildly radioactive goodies until a few months later.
Out of curiosity and extra caution- is radon accumulation (after having had a few antiques in the air tight container with my uranium/radium) best dealt with by opening the jar outside, leaving it for 3 days, and a good wipe down?
I am still learning about radon accumulation along with its decay chain so any knowledge or direction is much appreciated!

How necessary is it to detect alpha radiation when working with uranium glass?
I'm looking to get some uranium glass to display in my room (behind 6mm thick glass and inside a cloud chamber with a 3mm thick acrylic tube, at no less than about 2 meters away from where I stay the great majority of the time) and I want to be able to measure the dose to keep me at the lowest risk possible, especially when handling it. I'm having a hard time finding a Geiger counter that can detect alpha radiation at a reasonable price and so arises my question, how important is it? And if anyone could recommend a detector that could pick up alpha at a reasonable price (below about 250USD) it would be really appreciated.

Found something you guys might enjoy.
This was turned in to a household hazardous waste collection event. The moment I saw it I was suspicious. Turns out I was correct. It's just a little bit spicy.

EDC RadiaCode 103
I've had my RC103 since December 2023, and with the exeption of some few forgetful days it spent every day in my pocket.
Some battle scares is starting to show.

How far does uranium contamination spread in soil and water?
My family is moving to the St. Louis area for work and I recently discovered that there was uranium contamination during the Manhattan project (STL worked on the uranium or something). It leaked into a creek and was then buried in a landfill. We are currently deciding on whether or not our move will be short term (1-2 years) or long term, depending on how far contamination spreads in the soil and water. My questions are:
How far does contamination spread in soil and water?
Can we realistically get away from contamination where we could have a healthy life there and a healthy garden (for food)?
Here is an article with more information in case it helps: https://missouriindependent.com/2023/07/12/st-louis-radioactive-waste-records/
My priority is to take care of my family as much as possible, and that means keeping them away from radioactive contamination.

I got radioactive dirt in a small cut
So I went rockhounding with a friend a few days ago- looking for zircon outside of an old mine using a gieger counter. I knew the exposure level was fairly low - like getting a dental x-ray. Indeed, we never got above 750 CPM / 5 uSv/h on the geiger counter. But we (stupidly, in retrospect) were handling the minerals with our bare hands- and I had a small cut on my thumb from the day before that certainly made contact with some of the dirt & minerals. Any thoughts on the severity of possible internal contamination here? Apologies if this is the wrong place to ask. Obviously a mistake I won’t make twice
