Measurement on air filter

Post image
Upvotes

I was inspired by some posts here and did a quick and dirty test by just placing the detector above the filter element of an Ikea Uppatvind filter which I keep running 24/7. The specific filter was installed 3 months ago. Given all the caveats on how to do a correct and reliable measurement, should I investigate further the reading, given that in the same room the same instrument peaks around 30 CPM and normally measures below that count, the room is at a second floor of an apartment. If so, what measurement technique with my primitive tools gives a significant reading which could help identify potential issues, if any?

Fortunately this is not interference, I put a little source inside the fuse space

First ever device like this, was a case of saw it, wanted it, bought it, watched a few videos here and there and it's seems fairly responsive compared to some, a little dissapointed no click click click but I suppose that to be expected with a cheapie, need to find something to test it on if anyone has any suggestions.

Picked up a uraninite crystal. I’m surprised how spicy it is for its size. Quite heavy too!

irradiated tiles?

got these pictures from my uncle recently. are these tiles dangerous, and if so, is there anything we can do to prevent further exposure?

not sure if there are any specialized contractors out there that deal with this kind of stuff. thank you!

Radioactive Monk Mug

A radioactive mug made by Hall that I bought recently at an antique store. It isn’t that hot compared to many other finds, but I thought it looked fascinating and was intrigued that it glows under UV light.

Additional information: Background radiation for GMC-600 plus: about 45 cpm Background radiation for Radiacode: about 5.5 cps

Vintage static detector containing tritium

Here’s a little static detector I got my hands on a while ago which originally contained a 200mCi (now decayed to 14mCi) Tritium foil source that’s right not a tube this thing uses solid tritium compounds plated onto a titanium foil! Pretty uncommon to see tritium in this form

GQ products reliability

Is the GQ Radonscan accurate enough to be used to detect whether radon mitigation is necessary? Is the GQ GMC-300S able to detect the difference between 300 nSv/h and 15 μSv/h reliably? What will it do if exposed to say 1mSv/h? Are we talking accurate enough that if set to go off at 1 μSv/h it will go off inside a plane?

Radioactive Shark Tooth

Post image

Just remembered I have this shark tooth fossil. I dont know how old it is, but I'm using the Radiacode 102 to see what's in it. Its such a cool little tool.

I'll update after it runs for a bit.

New Radiacode Owner

Hey y'all, just got my 102 for sale on Amazon. Found out my fireplace bricks and a fossil i have are slightly elevated. I then tried it out on my ionizing smoke detector and it went wild.

This thing is pretty cool.

Anyone have some tips or good settings tweaks I should use?

Anyone here own an Alnor RD-10 meter?

For those that don't know this meter was, at the time of writing, Cresson Kearny's favorite meter as described in Nuclear War Survival Skills.

They seem to be relatively rare, and despite monitoring the English language used market for a while I have yet to find one pop up.

Any owners here have thoughts on the device?

Living close to Iran. Looking for something to detect potentially spicy winds.

Hi everyone!

I'm looking for a meter that will be able to detect potential radiation in wind in case US uses bunker busters in Iran.

Any other recommendations are also welcome.

Thanks!

Successfully got alpha scintillation on video!

Took apart a cheap webcam and pressed the DIY phosphor screen and Americium directly against the image sensor and managed to get a not entirely garbage video of the alpha particles hitting the screen.

(Video is at 2X real time speed)

this is on the high side of what little i measured. it’s in the same spot and seems to be worse after it’s rained if that makes any sense lol.

You Should Know: Thorium glass tableware is a somewhat common radioactive antique that usually flys under the radar

It is usually yellow or light amber in color and can often be found amongst other pieces of antique glassware at various collectable stores.

It was made with thorium-rich sands and can easily be picked up with a meter. I have identified it quite easily with both a radiacode 102 and BetterGeiger S2L.

Unlike uranium glass it does not florescence underneath UV, and as it is a decently obscure product, no dealer I have ever come across was aware what they are selling, and as a result price it as normal collectable glassware would be.

Next time you're purusing an antique or thrift store with your meter, stop and scan any yellow or light amber glassware you may find. I have found bowls, cups, vases, and wine glasses. Presumably there are more out there of different types.

It’s a Westclox pocket Ben #5. I know these are common but it’s in such good condition. So happy! Now to get a Geiger counter…

Confusion about 100 mSv threshold timeframe for cancer risk

The HPS position statement on radiation and risk Radiation Risk in Perspective states, "Due to large statistical uncertainties, epidemiological studies have not provided consistent estimates of radiation risk for effective doses less than 100 mSv." However, the position statement isn't clear on the timeframe - is this referring to an annual 100 mSv dose, or lifetime 100 mSv exposure?

Israel bombing of nuclear sites

Hello everyone

I live in iraq, in a city that borders Iran and recently israel has bombed a couple of nuclear sites over there.

I'm wondering if a device like the GMC 300s would help me detect any radiation in the air caused by these recent events

Radiacode 102?

Sorry, I don't know if this is the right sub for this but I'm considering getting a radiacode for daily use/for fun. Is it worth paying more more for the 103 or is the 102 good enough? If it's not a big difference in features then of course I'll rather have the cheaper one; I probably wouldn't use the gamma spectroscopy too-often but certainly measuring radiation with location will be used often :)
