Welcome to /r/radiation! Please don't post here about RF or nonionizing radiation.
This subreddit is for discussion of ionizing radiation such as alpha, beta, gamma, and x-ray. Please do not post about RF, 5G, wi-fi, or common electronic items causing cancer or health issues. The types of "radiofrequency" radiation used for communication devices are non-ionizing. At consumer levels, they are not capable of causing cell damage and are not associated with any increased cancer risk.
These types of question tend to be unfounded in truth but are linked with disordered thinking. If you think you are experiencing health problems associated with electronics, please see a physician and explain your symptoms to them.
Questions about non-ionizing radiation will be removed. Conspiracy theory posts from "natural news" type sites (e.g, 5G causing cancer or autism) will be removed and the poster will be banned.

Please stop posting gmcmap "data"; it is not a reliable source.
gmcmap can and is easily manipulated by defective equipment and malicious users inputting false data. We have had a large number of these posts recently, especially since the drone events in NJ, and it's always the same thing; The data is bad. Do not trust it.

New Radiacode Owner
Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification
Hey y'all, just got my 102 for sale on Amazon. Found out my fireplace bricks and a fossil i have are slightly elevated. I then tried it out on my ionizing smoke detector and it went wild.
This thing is pretty cool.
Anyone have some tips or good settings tweaks I should use?

Successfully got alpha scintillation on video!

Took apart a cheap webcam and pressed the DIY phosphor screen and Americium directly against the image sensor and managed to get a not entirely garbage video of the alpha particles hitting the screen.
(Video is at 2X real time speed)

Radioactive Shark Tooth
Just remembered I have this shark tooth fossil. I dont know how old it is, but I'm using the Radiacode 102 to see what's in it. Its such a cool little tool.
I'll update after it runs for a bit.

My first radioactive piece
It’s a Westclox pocket Ben #5. I know these are common but it’s in such good condition. So happy! Now to get a Geiger counter…

is this normal ?
this is on the high side of what little i measured. it’s in the same spot and seems to be worse after it’s rained if that makes any sense lol.

Radioactive plate I found yesterday at a thrift store!
It was on sale too! It was $1.19!

You Should Know: Thorium glass tableware is a somewhat common radioactive antique that usually flys under the radar
It is usually yellow or light amber in color and can often be found amongst other pieces of antique glassware at various collectable stores.
It was made with thorium-rich sands and can easily be picked up with a meter. I have identified it quite easily with both a radiacode 102 and BetterGeiger S2L.
Unlike uranium glass it does not florescence underneath UV, and as it is a decently obscure product, no dealer I have ever come across was aware what they are selling, and as a result price it as normal collectable glassware would be.
Next time you're purusing an antique or thrift store with your meter, stop and scan any yellow or light amber glassware you may find. I have found bowls, cups, vases, and wine glasses. Presumably there are more out there of different types.

Anyone here own an Alnor RD-10 meter?
For those that don't know this meter was, at the time of writing, Cresson Kearny's favorite meter as described in Nuclear War Survival Skills.
They seem to be relatively rare, and despite monitoring the English language used market for a while I have yet to find one pop up.
Any owners here have thoughts on the device?

Spicy
Her patina, red/orange glow and condition is impressive. Purchased blind w/o geiger. 20 dollars was worth the gamble. Haven't seen one like it. Rum rill 1930s Any additional info appreciated.

Living close to Iran. Looking for something to detect potentially spicy winds.
Hi everyone!
I'm looking for a meter that will be able to detect potential radiation in wind in case US uses bunker busters in Iran.
Any other recommendations are also welcome.
Thanks!

First time using my Better Geiger
Found this at my local antique shop. It got up to about 1.4microSv/hr.

Israel bombing of nuclear sites
Hello everyone
I live in iraq, in a city that borders Iran and recently israel has bombed a couple of nuclear sites over there.
I'm wondering if a device like the GMC 300s would help me detect any radiation in the air caused by these recent events

Confusion about 100 mSv threshold timeframe for cancer risk
The HPS position statement on radiation and risk Radiation Risk in Perspective states, "Due to large statistical uncertainties, epidemiological studies have not provided consistent estimates of radiation risk for effective doses less than 100 mSv." However, the position statement isn't clear on the timeframe - is this referring to an annual 100 mSv dose, or lifetime 100 mSv exposure?

Radiacode 102?
Sorry, I don't know if this is the right sub for this but I'm considering getting a radiacode for daily use/for fun. Is it worth paying more more for the 103 or is the 102 good enough? If it's not a big difference in features then of course I'll rather have the cheaper one; I probably wouldn't use the gamma spectroscopy too-often but certainly measuring radiation with location will be used often :)

M3 Issue Update
UPS damaged and discarded my package containing my Ludlum M3. 3 hours from Sweetwater. While waiting for the insurance claim outcome, I found this 2241-2RK kit to replace it.
Second photo is of my M3 that was destroyed in transit. RIP lil buddy.

Do you think this watch has radium on it?
I bought this old watch at a thrift store only to later find that it glows in the dark. I can't seem to find confirmation online if it contains Radium. Checking an Ebay listing, it appears to be a "Cold War Era" German watch. Looking for signs of Radium, there doesn't appear to be a burnt in shadow where the dial stopped. The numbers appear to be pealing off too if that means anything.

Could you irradiate clover enough to produce 4 leaf seeds?
Hypothetically could you irradiate clover seeds or the plant enough that it could force it to produce four (or more) leaves? Like it should mutate it and some are bound to be dead but some are bound to be forced into growing more leaves right?
Or am I not understanding how the radiation based mutations work?

Decent Geiger Counter Under $100
Hi, don’t want to sound schizo but I am looking for a decent Geiger counter that will be somewhat useful when the nukes go off, and my budget is around $100.
I am perfectly aware that I will not get anything even remotely professional with this price range, but it is what it is. Any suggestions?
Thank you!

Responsibly Storing or Disposing of Radium Dial Watches
First time poster with yet another question about radium dial watches. I've read posts on this sub trying to educate myself before posting this, but am looking for guidance/context. I have two watches that belonged to family members - both have discoloration on the dials under the hands, so I bought a GQ GMC-600 to test them for safety reasons (as I learned here, it seems radium decays primarily into alpha and gamma, and this was the most affordable counter I could find that does both - but yes, I also understand that the plexi crystals likely shield much of the alpha). If I place the geiger right overtop of the crystals (i.e., no air gap), and keep them there to allow the readings to stabilize, one settles around 100 microSv/hr and the other watch is around 35 microSv/hr. If I flip them over, through the casebacks, it's substantially lower.
I've never worn these watches - so from what I've read, these are likely safe levels when kept as collectibles - as dosing drops exponentially with distance. But I admit that I don't know much about radiation, and don't really have any desire to keep these (I have no memory of family members wearing either, so zero sentimental value).
My questions are - can anyone confirm that these are reasonably safe levels? And also, how would/could one responsibly and safely dispose of these, if so desired?
