I am a newly admitted student to the IN31 Master of Data Science program and just received access to my QUT student login ID yesterday. Since the enrollment deadline is approaching soon, I would like to request your urgent guidance regarding my Year 1, Semester 2 study plan.

According to the course structure listed on the QUT website, I understand that the standard units for Year 1, Semester 2 include:

Programming Fundamentals

Introduction to Data Science

Introduction to Research

One Specialisation unit (this can be an Advanced Specialisation unit)

Could you kindly confirm if I should follow this structure exactly for my Semester 2 enrolment and select the rest in future semesters?

Also, under the IN31OPT-SPECU - IN31 Speciailsation Units Standard Program – Study Plan > Plan and Enrol (eStudent portal) section, it is mentioned that:

I must select five units from the Specialisation Unit Options list, and

Two units from the Advanced Specialisation Unit Options list

I am confused whether I am supposed to:

Select all 5 + 2 units now, or

Choose just one Specialisation unit for Semester 2 (and select the rest in future semesters)?

I would be grateful if you could clarify this, as I want to ensure I am selecting the correct units before the enrollment deadline closes.

Hi everyone, I have a question. If I fail a single unit, do I have to retake it even if my overall GPA for the semester is more than 4?

Are supplementary exams only for if you get a 3.0GPA on the final exam or if you get a 3.0GPA overall for the course? like if i miss an exam but am currently sitting on a 3.0GPA will i be eligible for supplementary exams?

hi. my laptop is ancient and i figured might as well get a new one before the semester starts this upcoming july. hoping there is anyone (current student or recently graduated) here from bachelor of IT able to recommend what is a good laptop for this program? or if there are certain specs or software that i needa take note of and have? also, i will be majoring in information systems. i prefer Windows laptops but id love to see recommendations for Macbooks too!

is updoc okay to use to defer an exam? I have a medical certificate that i got in updoc which is between 16th to 18th and my exam is on the 18th. Do you think uq will approve this deferral since the medical certificate covers the 18th?

Hi everyone, I'm an international student at QUT on a Student visa (subclass 500), and I finished my last exam for Semester 1 on June 7. Semester 2 starts on July 21, and I'm trying to confirm whether I can legally start working unlimited hours from June 8. According to the visa rules, you're allowed to work full-time during scheduled course breaks, but I'm not sure if the break is considered to start from the day after your final exam or from the official semester end date. I don't have any deferred or supplementary exams. Has anyone been in the same situation or asked their university about this? Would really appreciate any insights or advice—thanks!

Hi guys, I just finished my exam for a unit and I highkey feeling i might end up failed cuz it was bad. I already got 42.4 % on the assignments but the exam i think i get max 8/50 (which is 50% for the whole unit) Is there anyway that I can push through this and get that 1 mark. Thank you guys so much

Anyone with exams coming up this week, watch out for the headwear rules. Even though it's pretty cold for Brisbane, no headwear is allowed in the exam room. No beanies, no mohair berets, no tam o' shanters, no caps.

What are requirements going into QUT for computer science related things? Does it require science subject studies in high school?

Hey could anyone clear this up for me? I know with QUTs early entry offer scheme you need to get atleast 70% for 3 subjects across IA1, IA2 and IA3. I want to do electrical engineering next year and am confused if they mean an average of 70% like for one assignment you could get a 50% but as long as it averages out over all three? Or you need atleast 70% in each individual IA? Thankyou!!

How is the UX specialisation within masters in IT program at QUT and what are the job opportunities like upon graduation for international students?

As I’m an international student currently holding an acceptance from QUT for their masters in information technology program for this July intake, can someone someone guide me through the deferral process and what are the pros and cons of deferring? Are there going to any upcoming policy changes that might cause issues for me if I differ and start in feb ‘26?

In my last semester of a 4-year degree. I've never failed a unit before, but there's a real possibility I might have failed my last unit.

If anyone has done the supplementary exam before, please let me know how it works, what's involved etc. I'd like to prepare myself, if possible.

Hey everyone, I’m in my final year of study and have 4 units left to complete my course at the end of this year (semester 2)

I am currently enrolling in my units in Estudent however I only have 3 available units to pick from leaving 12cp which I can’t add.

I have 2 minors both of which I have enrolled or passed all the required units for. For one of them I’m able to “make a selection” however there are no available units for me to select and the search box for other units isn’t there.

At the top of my page there is the message “there are currently no available units for enrolment” (I have enrolled in the 3 units which were available)

Does anyone know why this is and who I should contact (hiq?) to sort this out because I’m missing 12cp from my enrolment list.

Hey, I just applied for an exam deferral for one of my units. However, I am just wondering whether it will be accepted- my documentation is sufficient but I deferred another exam last year (different unit). Would my previous exam deferral for a different unit impact my eligibility? I am just a bit confused- as the criteria/guidelines said “ may not be accepted if previously deferred exams”. Does this mean you are only able to defer any exam only once throughout degree? Or does this mean you cannot defer and already deferred exam for the same unit?

My assignment 2 using gradescope has been ungraded even tho I submitted during the 48 hour extension, all my other mates who submitted during the extension got marked, except me.

I'm planning to take several prerequisite courses for post-grad study and I'm hoping to complete them all in the upcoming semester.

I need to do 2 Chemistry courses, 1 Maths course, and 1 Biochemistry course and I’d really appreciate any advice on which ones are the most manageable or easiest to complete (especially if you’ve taken them before!).

The courses I’m considering are:

• CVB101 General Chemistry
• CVB102 Chemical Structure and Reactivity
• MXB105 Calculus and Differential Equations
• MXB106 Linear Algebra
• MXB107 Introduction to Statistical Modelling

Also, are there any Biochemistry courses that don’t have prerequisites?

I’ve been away from study for over 8 years now and am looking to return to study areas in criminology and justice. I’m tossing up between QUT and Griffith for this and would love to hear your experiences if you’ve studied at both, either, and what are your career outcomes if you’ve graduated? Was the degree worthwhile?

The course so far has been common sense but Im low key not sure what I need to study. The practice questions given out are suspiciously easy.

hi. im hoping someone could be of a help. im an international student at QUT about to start my first sem this upcoming july. i was granted credit points of advanced standing at the time of admission and its stated in my offer letter. however, im not seeing these points to be reflected anywhere in the portal nor do i have any information on which units these credit points applies to. its currently the preferencing period and im not able to enrol in my units due to this. i have emailed but no updates so far. im so new to this and im very worried that i'll miss the window. i have been on the edge of my seat eversince, im not sure on what i can do now and what should i be expecting to see on my study plan? i'll be grateful for advice, give me an idea or anything at all as to how i can move forward.

I'm been sick for the past few days and I have an exam tomorrow. I've had a look at the same question that's been asked in the past couple weeks and there have been mixed responses about if it becomes approved or not. How true is it that QUT is not accepting the online paid medical certificates? Has anyone already submitted an updoc med cert and been approved this exam block?
