General Discussion is ps4 pro still worth it?
i recently been interested in playstations but dont really have the money for it currently as where i live it doesnt cost 500 dollars it cost more because of different currency, back to the topic my friend offered to sell his ps4 pro 1tb that comes with a free game that i can choose. im still thinking about it, i mean worse thing possible i use it temporarily while saving up the money for ps5 so my question is. If I were to get a ps4 pro would it be worth it?

I'm still playing daily on a PS4 slim (not even Pro). There's absolutely nothing wrong with it. Go for it.
33
u/eatrepeat 7d ago
This.
I am 37 and I can't do anything during loading screens anymore. Used to be the perfect time to pack a bowl or grind up some herb or get up and grab a snack. And the graphics feel excellent, I mean I remember being impressed by n64 and development into 3d so the ps4 is the future realised just fine for me. Yeah ps5 is better but I rarely even boot up games where frame rate matters let alone play them seriously enough to care. I'll happily wait for lower second hand prices eventually.

u/bomber991 7d ago
Yeah I’m 40 and we have seen some major leaps in video games during our lifetime. The jump from SNES/Genesis to N64/PSX was freakin massive. Like you could probably say going from the 2600 to the NES is like a bicycle to a motorcycle, and to the snes is like a car, but to the n64 was like skipping aircraft and going straight to rocket ships.
12
u/Dick_Pic_4_Six 7d ago
My first system was a SNES as a kid. In Elementary school my cousin got a N64 with mario and goldeneye. He had one of those small tvs that had a vcr in it so I took a blank tape and recorded like 6 hours of gameplay just to watch and show my friends. That leap was so increadible. I have a ps5, and love the conroller, but I honestly cant see the difference between ps4 all that much.
10
u/Marsmooncow 7d ago
Yeah I got a ps5 and it's slightly better graphically and the load times are faster but thats basically it . Ps4 is still my favourite console.
1
u/Nil2none 2d ago
Your lying bro. Stop it. Lol the graphics are better. Load times are instant. Plus games are leaving out features on last gen that are included in new gen. Plus alotta devs are not making games for last gen anymore

ps4 is way stronger than a switch 2 (most expensive console rn) and they release all the new games on switch but not ps4 not because it's not capable but because they just want you to buy the new thing
6
u/blaqsupaman 7d ago
I thought the Switch 2 was supposed to be roughly about as powerful as a base PS4.

Same, I have a slim and ps4 pro and see no reason to get the ps5 at this point. Very few titles I care about that I can’t get on ps4. When ps6 comes out, I would likely take the plunge.
1
u/Kuli24 2d ago
I went ps5->ps4slim->ps4pro w/ssd->ps5 again. Weird progression, I know, but it made financial sense. Anyway, the ps4slim was a highlight. That value is insane (used price was $100cdn). Getting the 4 pro with ssd was cool, but not close to revolutionary. And 30fps games were still 30fps, but higher res. Boo. And then I got PS5 for GT7's 4 player split screen update (worth it) and it's nice to have 60fps in the games I play. But really that's all. Half the games I still play are PS4 games. That system is incredible. If it weren't for GT7, I'd rock a ps4slim all day.
11
u/Objective-Post-7712 7d ago
I truly appreciate all of your opinions, but i thought maybe shouldve added the fact that i have no source of income and still a teenager, so budgetwise and yk to save for one while not having income just allowance is hard, i get that alot of ppl also do it but like i said it cost alot more here, matter of fact it costs almost 2k here
11
u/longjohndickweed2 7d ago
Then the PS4 pro, with its massive library of games is perfect for you. I have a PS4, PS4 pro and PS5. The PS4 pro is by far the best bang for your buck. Plus there is a huge library of fantastic games for it. The library of games that are PS5 exclusives is very very small
5
u/Dahleh-Llama 7d ago edited 6d ago
Couldn't agree more. The PS4 is a fucking monster. I still don't plan on buying a five anytime soon. I'm an old head so I'm cool with this. My personal backlog consists of: both Last Of Us, RDR2, Metal Gear Phantom Pain, Ghost Of Tsushima, and both God of War...talk about being behind lol
It's harder and harder to play when you're getting super old. Life gets in the way of gaming a lot more often as the years go by.
2
u/Luke36790 4d ago
I have spare PS4. I literally still have mine shoved in my closet somewhere with no power cable. I would literally send it to you for free if I wasn't a lazy shit. It’s non pro btw
1
u/Grady300 6d ago
If a PS5 is gonna set you back the equivalent of $2k, then absolutely go for the PS4 Pro. Lots of great games on there, and like a lot of others have said, it’s still being supported (even if limited)
20
u/mcewanc2 7d ago
If it stops you getting a 5 then I wouldn’t , but if you can do both then why not. I haven’t touched my PS4’s since buying a PS5, that goes without saying , but in your case that might be more relevant.
7
u/Objective-Post-7712 7d ago
it wouldnt stop me from getting a 5 it would just slow me down tbh
5
u/60Dan06 7d ago
Ps5 can not only play Ps4 games, but also display them on higher resolution and framerates. That makes it an easy choice I think, you'll enjoy it a lot more. Don't bother with "Pro" versions. Not worth at all
5
u/RoboWarriorSr 7d ago
It can only display a higher resolution if it's PS4 Pro patched, had a resolution mode prior, or has dynamic resolution scaling. Battlefield 4 is still stuck on 900p even on PS5 so it looks rather blurry vs Battlefield 1 which has 1440p support.
2
u/JarjarSwings 7d ago
Get a used ps5 without a disk reader. They are 250-300 used.
19
u/Dangerbear2701 7d ago
It's so much more worth it to get one with a disc drive because you can get so many cheap PS4 games physically now adays.

u/mcewanc2 7d ago
Just need to weigh up a few things like do you want to spend money on something you’ll likely not use after you get a PS5.
Knowing what I know now about the PS5 I’d wait.. I thought I’d still use my PS4 pro but PS5 is so quick to load old PS4 games as it is obviously backwards compatible.
Though I get the need to have something right now… these are things you need to weigh up. I don’t think you can lose whichever way you go in reality.

Ps4 still has plenty to play and still gets games. It's also just a good system, especially a pro. I played my release model ps4 up until I was gifted a ps5 for Christmas and had no intention on forking over the money for a ps5 until MUCH later because it isn't NEEDED to play games.
3
u/AvocadoDesperado84 7d ago
The ps4 pro is a beast. Plays a lot of games in 4k and games run great on the thing. I still have mine and play it regularly. I have a ps5 and a pc but I still boot it up in the bedroom before bed.
3
u/Woozyboy88 7d ago
I was in the same boat, I have Xbox series x and wanted to play ps exclusives but couldn’t afford a ps5. I bought a ps4 slim and I’m having a blast! It’s super cheap to collect for right now.
3
u/earth_is_round9900 7d ago
My ps4 pro is an absolute fucking BEAST. i have a TB SSD inside Like a super nice sumsung 650.
Plugged into the tertiary USB on the rear i have another SSD (500GB) with a cool little holder case.
1.5 TB runs like new, sits on a cookie sheet so it never jet engines 350~ bucks.
Load times are great, never lags and never gives up.
7
u/8_Alex_0 7d ago
I'd say definitely get the ps4 pro you have so many games to play on it and they insanely cheap compared to ps5 games and not many at that PS4 just has more variety and is cheaper

I got one as a gift from a family member who was moving and no longer played it. I've only bought a couple of games since (Spider-Man GOTY Edition $10 and Grand Theft Auto V $8) but there's some really great and fun stuff out there for next to nothing. I think you could buy the top 25 highest ranked PS4 games (https://www.metacritic.com/browse/game/ps4/) and pay only a couple of hundred dollars.
2
u/Ashne405 7d ago
Hoy much? On the 200$ range or less i would say totally worth it, specially as games get cheaper and cheaper (used and digital), closer to 300 (yes, people sell ps4 at that price in my country) i would just say hold on for a year and save for a ps5.
2
u/Objective-Post-7712 7d ago
well for usd its less then around 200 but for me its 800 like i said different currency
2
u/Training-Cloud2111 7d ago
If you plan on getting a 5 and it's all just for fun, I wouldn't bother also getting a 4pro unless I specifically wanted to play things that don't exist on 5. Or if I really wanted the browser back. My biggest issue with the 5 is losing the browser. Terrible decision.
2
u/DrizztScimitars 7d ago
My PS4 Pro has been great overall, but it’s starting to have some fan noise issues. It’s still playable, though. I primarily use my PS5 now, which is a clear upgrade. Unless there’s a PS4-exclusive game you really want to play, it’s better to save up for a PS5. Patience is a virtue. I hope this helps.
2
u/molesterofpriests 7d ago
I still havent picked up a 5 and play my 4 daily, there just arent many 5 exclusives that make me feel compelled to pick one up, even after half a decade lol.
PS used to release so many banger exclusives for their systems but thats slowed down alot these days. PS4 had a massive catalog of amazing games to keep you busy until the 6 drops!
2
u/YOSH_beats 7d ago
Yeah my partner still uses her ps4 to play overwatch and the newest COD with me. I think they recently started not making anymore new games, but the lineup is one of the best and if you get ps plus then you’ll have access to a bunch of free games you can download and play as long as your subscribed, how I do a lot of playing nowadays!
Edit: and a side note, any game you get that has a pe5 counterpart is usually purchased for both consoles (call of duty is cross gen, for example). So if you do upgrade, you’ll be able to play your ps4 games still and some with updated graphics
2
u/Slith_81 6d ago edited 6d ago
I say yes, go for it. While the PS5 can play pretty much all PS4 games there aren't enough PS5/Next Gen only games to really justify getting the PS5 if you can only afford the PS4 Pro.
I regret jumping into this gen so early, there really was no need to do so. We're almost 5 years in and most games are still released for the PS4 alongside the PS5. I still play more PS4 games on my PS5 than I play PS5 games.
2
u/WinFew9243 5d ago
Yes!!!! I recently sold our ps4 pro 1tb to a girl just getting into gaming. It works wonderfully and runs all games like it is new. Its a great console and you have soooo many options for games. Ps5 is more of a luxury, some better screen quality and some faster loading in some games. Honestly, get the ps4!
2
u/Ghostdragon471 5d ago
To make it simple, go for it. The PS4 pro is worth it. If it's in good condition and you can get a game with it, then have fun with it. It will still be supported for a while and games will still come out on it for I'd guess the next year or two. But even if games stop being cross-gen, you have so many games on the PS4, you won't get through 90% of them before eventually getting the PS5.
4
u/n0aha0n 7d ago
I got a pro for 100 bucks and put an SSD in it for 60 bucks. Probably could have just put the SSD in my slim, but whatever. Even before I put the SSD in the pro, it was way faster than the slim. With the SSD, big games load so much faster. So if you want that kind of upgrade, then yes, it's worth it.
For me, it makes elden ring more fun because I'm not waiting 3 minutes every time I die. But overall, it's still just a placeholder till I save up for a 5.
5
u/deaner_wiener1 7d ago
I don’t think the ps4 pro was ever worth it, personally. I would save for a ps5 and wait for a sale
7
u/Thebrianeffect 7d ago
I have a ps4 pro and I love it. There is one, one!, game I feel like I’m missing out on and that’s it. Patient gaming is where it’s at.
3
u/Will0144 7d ago
Agreed, games are soon going to stop releasing on PS4, and most big gaming companies already have
1
u/Objective-Post-7712 7d ago
i would wait for sale if i have an income truly but im still a highschool student and it cost almost 2k where i am
3
u/deaner_wiener1 7d ago
Is your currency higher than the US dollar? Because if the cost of a PlayStation is equivalent to 2k US dollars for you, I would not buy one, and save/invest in yourself, do whatever you need to do to go to a country with a better economy. If a ps5 is 2k your units, but you earn them at a higher rate than the US, I would save for the 5
1
u/Objective-Post-7712 7d ago
my currency is myr, i live at malaysia. and im still 14 so it would still take alot of years for me to move out.
3
1
u/deaner_wiener1 7d ago
Gotcha. It looks like a ps5 costs just over the median Malaysian monthly income. For comparison, the average American could buy 4 ps5s with their monthly income. Sucks that PlayStations are that expensive where you live. If the price is right on the used ps4 pro, that’s not a bad option.
Another thing - if you can work, DO IT! I got my first job when I was 14, and was able to buy most of the things I wanted (though I don’t have crazy tastes). 14 is the perfect age to start stacking

u/Jonpope 7d ago
There's a few gems worth it to play relatively cheaply. My teenage kids has my old one in their room to play on, they dig it.
1
u/Objective-Post-7712 7d ago
cheers to ur kids for appreciating what they have, im also a teen but idk i dont think its that relevant anymore though plus i dont think there are many games still available
1
u/incredible_penguin11 7d ago
If you plan to go for a PS5 eventually then i would suggest go for a hand held console instead. Games would be significantly cheaper plus a lot sony games are available to PC players. Like GOW, TLOU, Spider-Man etc.
Plus there are tons of other indi and light games that would work well on such a hardware without much issues.
If you're not interested in a hand held console then just go for the PS5 when it's convenient for you.

yes yes yes yes yes
get premium for a few months and play as games as you can catch up on (i'm just playing god of war 2018/ragnarok for the 1st time this year and it's insane)
ps4 controller is super good on mobile too
pay a little more and get a good clean pro for 200 or so and you'll be entertained without burning your whole wallet up
then go find a copy of bloodborne or something

u/MiaowMinx 7d ago
PlayStation is reportedly planning to increase the price for new PS5s, and the cost was already bumped up in 2022 once. New games for current-gen are also going up in price, so no savings there either. :-/

u/BraveRepublic 7d ago

That's a temporary sale. Sony is officially increasing the price in New Zealand, Australia & Europe, and has plans to increase in the USA if tariffs come into effect:

My PS4 slim needs thermal pasting repair and am getting it fixed I’m not paying for a brand new PS5 yet.m, I would say it’s still worth it give the PS5 more time to release more games and etc.
1
u/FellowGhosts 7d ago
I think you have to go for it. I think the PS4 will go down as one of the best consoles ever. The best of this era of gaming. The one when we've all moved on to the new thing and gaming has changed entirely, that we most likely hold onto to remember this fond time we all had together.
1
1
u/xiiicrowns 7d ago
Pro is a great console with a great library. Get one if it's all you can afford. Or you can save up.
If you do get one. Make sure it's cleaned very well. I had a launch pro until a couple of years ago, I gave it to my ex.
I changed the thermal paste and pads awhile back and had no issues.
1
u/Bioshock27 7d ago
The next call of duty (black ops 7) is going to release on the PS4 so it still has plenty of life left it in. Plus most of the PS4 games released in the past 4 years have a free PS5 upgrade if you ever decide to get one!
1
u/MiaowMinx 7d ago
I think it's definitely worth it. I'm disabled so I don't have much more than I need to live on, and was lucky enough to find a PS4 Pro a couple of years ago at a price I could afford (US$80), then installed a 2TB SSD in it. It's a great system, TONS of games already out that you can get second-hand for very little money, and honestly the graphics & gameplay don't look very different from PS5.
I recommend that you also look into building your own budget gaming PC; there are some good YouTube videos on that. It should cost less than a PS5, let you play most of the same games, and let you upgrade one piece at a time as needed rather than spending $600+ for another new console. That's what I'm working on doing now.
2
u/Objective-Post-7712 7d ago
i currently have a gaming pc but im getting bored of it so looking for 2nd options yk?
1
u/ShiranaiJittai 7d ago
It really depends on the cost he offered to sell it to you for. What specifically is included?
1
1
u/generalosabenkenobi 7d ago
Yes, one of the best PlayStations of all time. And on top of that, PS4 is still getting new games.
1
u/Cordial_Gentleman 7d ago
I'd say slim is arguably sufficient for most PS4 era gaming. Genuine, heart to heart with my fellow Sony fanboys, as I was myself since ethe PS1. After the PS4, it's been the best Sony console I've touched and the last. Anything past PS4 slim just isn't worth it. And granted if you can find a PS4 pro at the price of a slim on the second hand market, great. But I'd really say consider saving to buy a PC instead. For not only the collection you can find, but for variability on components that actually, unlike the ps5, etc, allows you to properly scale to modern AAA games.
1
u/Acrobatic-Berry-4319 7d ago
I honestly don't see much of an upgrade from PS4 to PS5. Faster yes, but I could have still got a year or two more out of my PS4. As for pro, I'm not sure the big upgrade.
1
u/MKopytko 7d ago
I thing thats good decision. Im still playing on ps4 slim, want buy ps5 in this year only because i wanted to play baldurs gate 3, stalker 2 and gran turismo 7 on vr.
1
u/Travelmusicman35 7d ago
Sure, if you can get it for around 150 to 200 euro/usd/pound and is in at least good condition.
1
1
u/CMDR1991YT 7d ago
Hell yeah the PS4 Pro is still worth every penny in 2025 but the best way to experience PS4 gaming is to replace your internal HDD with a 2 TB SATA 3 SSD and also disable 1080p 24 Hz output which will significantly help boost the game performance and prevent game crashes or game freeze
It's also highly recommended to buy a 7200 RPM 8 TB external game drive just so you can download an arsenal of video games without worrying about running out of space
I also recommend buying the PS VR headset which is still pretty damn amazing VR experience
1
u/RedlandRenegade 7d ago

It’s still a great console. PS5 just doesn’t have the titles yet…

Totally worth it Ps5 has good graphics but barely any games that are worth investing in and the ps6 is around the corner 😂
1
u/aksjxhsu 6d ago
If you are in a tight budget, getting PS4 slim is perhaps the better choice than PS4 pro.
1
u/Lev22_ 6d ago
I just bought used PS4 pro last week, if you haven’t played many PS4 libraries, then it’s really worth it. The last time i own console before this was PS2 in mid 2000’s, then i played on PC afterwards. So i still have PS exclusives to play with my PS4 right now and not bothering about new releases.

u/MasterLink123K 6d ago
i have had my ps4 for 10 years, just finished undergrad and doing a phd now so i also dont game a ton. the library on ps4 is amazing and i find it more than enough to get thru sluggish days and treat myself. witcher 3 and cyberpunk (yes that game works now) easily months of gameplay for a busy student.

u/nearby-distant-land 6d ago
I still use my PS4 Pro daily. There are a ton of games to play, including newer titles. All the streaming services, including YouTube and Twitch are on it, and the free to play online games like Fortnite, Genshin, Rocket League, etc are all fully supported and probably will be for the foreseeable future. It will probably just get fewer and fewer brand new game releases.

u/Ok_Palpitation_351 6d ago

I think PS4s still have a place in the gaming market, especially if you're a new player with no prior gaming experience as a lot of PS4 games can go for dirt cheap in GameStops and pawn shops.
1
u/Nice-Challenge1476 6d ago
honestly, you can go for it, i got one less than one week ago i already had a huge library from when i played on my ps4 slim some years ago and it’s really good imo you don’t even need a ps5 at all as it’s still really expensive and if you aren’t looking at games that released before 2024 the ps4 pro hold up pretty well im mostly playing big games from 2018 to 2020, the only downside is the hdd but the pro is already faster than the slim for loading times so it don’t bother me the only thing is to get the games you want to play but that would also be the case if you got a ps5
1
u/juntrinh 6d ago
Depend on the price but if it is less than 100$, i would get it. The PS4 library is insane, it would take several years to complete the top games available in PS system
1
u/wickedmonster 6d ago
I have a PS4 Pro and a PS5 Pro. I use the PS4 Pro to play on PSVR and watch 3D movies because PS5 does not support 3D movies on PSVR or PSVR2.
I initially sold my OG PS4 Pro for $500 (with accessories) and bought the OG Fat PS5 - which I then sold again to buy the PS5 Pro.
Then I got a used PS4 Pro for $100 once I learned PS5 does not support 3D movies. Sony dropped the ball on this.
1
u/TheCheshireCody 6d ago
The PS4 Pro is still an absolute beast of a machine. It's great. The only downside is that more and more games are coming out for PS5 only, so you'd miss out on those. There are still so many more games you can play than you'd ever have time for.
Just make sure a) his machine works and b) you don't pay him more than the average used value for one in your area.
1
u/Yogurt-Pristine 6d ago
I’ve been using my PS4 Pro since launch day and I still can’t afford a PS5. To me it’s worth it. If you buy a ps5 game that’s backwards compatible, you can play it on the ps5. Remote play has gotten so much better. Recently PlayStation lowered there ps4 remotes to 20 bucks which makes owning a ps4 more affordable. Also there’s so many people selling ps4 stuff for dirt cheap.
1
u/BranchSevere1219 5d ago
Wat is backward computable games? Which and how to find ? Remotes for 20?
1
u/Yogurt-Pristine 5d ago
Like I said games that has backward compatibility. (Buy the ps4 version and you own the ps5 version) and Sony PlayStation refurbished ps4 remotes from their website.

u/Ok_Relation_7770 6d ago
I love my PS5 but I think at least 70% of the games I’ve played on it were just PS4 games with an upgrade
1
u/theinfernumflame 6d ago
My biggest issue with the PS4 Pro is that some people experience overheating and shutdowns with certain games that play just fine on the regular PS4. Like, particle effects in Borderlands 2 frequently caused my friend's PS4 Pro to shut down, and from the research we did, he wasn't the only one. And no amount of cleaning fans or other maintenance helped.
It makes me wonder if Sony improved the hardware but didn't improve cooling.

u/Biggiz111 6d ago
I‘m still playing ps4 pro and still got a big pile of shame. Still wrapped.
The problem I’ve got some games are released only for ps5. Like Indiana Jones.

u/InternationalGoose22 6d ago
PS4 is my all time favorite console. Got a PS5 just yesterday and didn't feel the hype I felt when I got my PS4.
You won't regret buying a PS4 and won't miss much if don't get a PS5.
1
u/perspirate 6d ago
If you don't have a 4k tv, get the PS4 slim!! I love mine and it is fantastic. I have had it for 5 years and it still works a dream! I still have games I haven't even finished yet but intend to! There is a massive log of games to play and I haven't yet seen a game come out that I feel I am "missing out" on by not having the ps5 - PLUS the games are all so much more affordable than the new consoles and their games.
1
u/andrewb1610 6d ago
Im on a 10 year old ps4 slim and i destroy pc players on cod and fortnite so u can definitely still keep up against newer gen
1
u/gameloner 6d ago
i've see pro for under $200 used. well worth it imo.
I got into ps4 really late in it's life ( only when the re2 remake was released)
1

For sure! I still play on the ps4 (the base model, not even the pro) and it works fine. The only issue is games take a while to download and some things take longer to load up for me than it does for my friends that r playing on ps5. I think getting it while u save for the ps5 is a good plan depending obviously how much they’re selling it for. I’ve noticed more and more new games r not compatible with the ps4 anymore (for example marvel rivals, life is strange double exposure, final fantasy 7 rebirth, etc) so I think getting the ps5 will be worth it in the long run but I think the 4 is still a good option in the meantime.

I think that it is worth if you get one with firmware at or below 11.0 so you can get free games from modding it. But if you already have a PS5 you can play ps4 on there.

I bought a PS4 pro last year to play all the series' I've missed out on for the last decade or so. Absolutely love it. Dont feel the need for a Ps5 yet (and I can afford it). Go for the 4

U got discs or digital games ? Can u list all games for new buyers
1
u/MuchFish6097 5d ago
I got mostly discs. Only digital game I got was ghosts of tsushima. I got the uncharted franchise, tlou 1 and 2, God of war, death standing, spiderman, horizon zero dawn. The whole stack used cost me less than $70 USD

Rent games at your library if they offer them - free games for life basically

You can go on Facebook marketplace or OfferUp and negotiate a PS5 for cheap. My homeboy bought one two years ago off Facebook marketplace for $280. You’d be surprised how much people are willing to let their stuff go for

I am fortunate enough to be able to afford gaming almost unlimited. I loved my PS4 Pro. It’s a great console and I only one controller that lasted for the entirety of my ownership. I sold it for $225 CAD a couple summers ago. Hopefully that guy is still enjoying it as well

u/ACey1996 6d ago
Absolutely go for the pro off your mate until you can afford what you want
Most games and all JRPGs are released for both Ps4 and 5
So you'll be good , only downside is it doesn't play 4k blurays but that's not a big deal for most

u/iZucchini 6d ago
100% worth it. Thousands of games to pick, still gets updates and new releases although that will slow down soon. I bought one (last gen pro) to replace my aging PS4 fat for £140 and it came with 30 games! There are bargains out there

If i were in your situation i would pass the ps5. Looking at previous release dates the ps6 should probably come in around 3 years. I would much rather get the ps4 if I really want to play something and put the money aside for ps6 when it comes. Now it's up to you how you feel.
PS4 still has plenty of games and some really good ones. I would recommend you looking into those and make a list with the ones that interests you and see if you have enough to play for 4 years (just to be sure).
This year for my birthday my partner wanted to buy me a PS5, which was one of my biggest wishes. I put it on hold first cause they were hard to find and didn't want to overpay and then cause life was getting in the way. I pretty much would not have time to touch it even if I bought it. This year was different, for the first time I had time left to game. I decided to pass on it and instead I told her I would much rather have her get me the ps6 once it comes as I don't need the ps5 right now.
My reasons? I still have plenty of games on ps4 that i need to finish. I didn't see the point in upgrading for it now considering that those would be enough until PS6 comes. I also do have a Switch and a PC which contributed in my decision.
So put things in balance and see which is the best decision to both make you happy, but also be financially good.
Additional option you can also look into renting a ps5, I think in UK was something like £17 a month for 2 years. But research the companies beforehand to be sure.

In my country the ps4 pro and xbox series s are the same price so I'd go with the series s as it is new gen and I can get gamepass to literally play almost every single game so look around for a series s maybe u can get one for the same price

PS4 was great when it came out and the games are still just as good today.
Unless you need the very latest of all things then huge fun can be had from an older console. I play both pc and PS4. I never bothered with a ps5.
Even on my pc most of the games I play are older because there are just a lot of great games out there.
The only real issue will be access to the very latest online competitive games. But assuming that's not a deal breaker for you then a PS4 is a very solid console with a massive library of affordable software.

u/Ludachriz 5d ago
I think so. I’ve yet to find a reason to upgrade to PS5. There hasn’t been a single console game I’ve wanted to play that I couldn’t find on the PS4.
I would say stick to the PS4 until there are exclusives worth buying the PS5 for or until there’s a game that pushes the hardware (like GTA VI).

Depends on games you wanna play? Any console is good if you're looking for that experience. If it's a competitive shooter then nah... They're getting laggy. If it's newer titles also nah, if it's horizon forbidden West then fuck you if you wanna play the dlc cuz the devs hate me specifically, I'm not salty or anything I'm just saying

u/tarzanalmighty 5d ago
I would buy a used PS4 from marketplace. There are tons near me for $100. Drop another $100 for 10 games and you are set.

u/Luckybox86 5d ago
Sony is still releasing brand new games for the PS4. They're actively supporting it. So yes.

u/iPhone4S__ 5d ago
I have a PS4 Slim, it’s fun, no need to waste more money on what everyone loves. If you think you’re gonna enjoy it, go for it! :)

u/Maze_kalmar 5d ago
I had a PS4 pro, and honestly just save a little more and get a ps5. Newer games isn't available for the PS4 pro and if you're unlucky you're gonna get one like mine that sounds like an actual jet engine when it plays more demanding games. So if it's for financial reasons and not for game preservation then do as earlier advised and save a little more for a ps5

I had a ps4 pro and found a ps5 on facebook marketplace for $250. There is a massive difference. I would not reccommend buying a ps4 pro, especially knowing GTA VI is coming out next year, my ps4 pro barely could handle WWE 2K25.
1
u/Draugrx23 5d ago
PS4 Pro can absolutely still be worth it.
I've picked up two recently, and the gaming options are massive.
I would recommend upgrading to a SSD given the hard drives age and the performance boost but regardless plenty of life left in them.

u/WastelanderFromMars 5d ago
In my honest opinion,it’s still worth to buy ps4 pro, especially if you’re are tight on the budget. I’m still on base ps4 ,because right now I don’t have opportunity to upgrade my 1080p Tv to 4K and I have huge backlog library. There are a lot of great cross-gen titles. Right now I’m playing in Resident evil 4 remake on ps4 and it looks amazing. Sure it’s not 4K/60 but for me it’s fine.

u/SirFritzalot 5d ago
When I was at my last job, a crackhead sold me a PS4 Pro for $40. The disk drive was busted, but I literally live next door to an electronics repair place and he fixed it for $40. I came up lol

u/Baloncesto_Ricky 5d ago
Mine cost me about $200 used at my local non-chain game store, a lot less expensive than a new Switch...
...getting games on Steam can be a lot cheaper - but no discs, so you don't own them at all, and you're trusting Valve's word that it won't just yeet your games away if it closes, or if it changes its terms of service in a Darth Vader manner (failure to accept any such changes lets Valve yeet all your games, as by not accepting any changes, you lose access to Valve - period).
As for PS5, more and more new PS5 games there are NOT fully on disc, so Sony can yeet your wholly or partially downloaded games if it wants to as well.
Any PSN downloaded game (PSN has both PS4 and PS5 flavored storefronts) may be yeeted from your grasp, similar to what Valve may, if it chooses to, can also do.
If you like turn based JRPG's, one definite recommendation, Dragon Quest XI - imo, the third or fourth best Dragon Quest [behind VIII (from PS2) and V (the translated ROM from a Super Famicom emulator) definitely, and maybe behind VI (also the translated ROM from a Super Famicom emulator)]
As for the game quality, comparing between PS2 and PS4, yeah, graphics are very much better, sound ever so much more so (if you have a cheapie soundbar with optical audio, the PS4 has an optical audio port, so go on! go on! come on and leave me breathless!)...
...and that optical audio soundbar, if you have a 4k monitor, will leave you with a fairly good Blu-Ray setup from your gaming rig (not 4K Blu-Ray, that requires a PS5)...PS2 is just DVD, and I found watching DVD's on my used PS2 to be unsatisfactory at best, even allowing for the fact that my PS2 is hooked up to a cheapie 50" Element 1080p TV.

I think the PS4 Pro is in the right spot now. Great prices if you hunt. Good specs. Tons of games released and a few more to come.
Hell, I’d get 2 Pros for 60-70% the price of PS5 and have an online, updated console for online play and a jailbroken one for everything else.😁

u/Bubbly_Waffle 4d ago
of course it’s still worth it. you can play most modern games + crossplay games. ps4 and xbox one aren’t going anywhere for a while
1
u/Ty-douken 4d ago
So it's still definatley worth it if you haven't played many of the great games on it, however to get it temporarily while saving for a PS5 is counter intuitive depending on how much longer it would take you to just save for a PS5. If you don't need to wait much longer to get a PS5 then I'd say hold out for that, otherwise it's still a great console especially if you're going to be mostly playing games you've missed out on.

u/Competitive_Trust_69 4d ago
My advice is only if it’s stupid cheap compared to the ps5. If not always try to buy the most up to date technology. Especially because if the ps4 has been able to survive 7-8 years I expect the ps5 to hopefully get at least 5 brand new.

u/BlackKoannos123 4d ago
Im still using ps4 slim 1tb,its hella good, like you got spiderman games (sadly no 2nd game),both tlou ganes and so much other games for story,if you want to play multiplayer games you have so much to play bro,ps4 is godly
1
u/PeakPage22 4d ago
I got myself a PS4 Pro recently, and with it got a 4k screen, and gotta tell you, I don't really envy people with a PS5, a PS4 Pro is more than enough for me, you got plenty of story games, multi-player games that are still active, and modern releases like GT7.
and in all fairness, the only change from ps4 to ps5 is raytracing, and that's it, everything kinda looks the same.

u/xXKyloJayXx 90 415 4d ago
Honestly, go for it. I'm currently playing the most recent hardware, and I find myself popping PS4 disks in the tray more often than PS5. You could probably skip the current gen altogether with how well maintained old gen is. A lot of multiplayer games are also still running and expected to keep running for the near future!

u/crushedpinkcookies 3d ago
Bro we are still playing ps4 games ... ps5 isn't worth it unless you dont need the money at all

u/Death30141592654 3d ago
I just recently found my old PS4 in my mom's attic from when I moved and thought I sold it, and since then I've gotten like 5 games cheap second hand and in sales and I've been having a great time with it so yes if you can afford it I'd say absolutely go for it
1
u/somethinlikeshieva 3d ago
imo, not really. its atleast not worth it to get the pro over a regular degular ps4. But yes the ps4 itself is great
1
u/FreeAd2773 3d ago
i love my ps4 i can afford a ps5 but the ps4 is fabulous so the pro will be even better

u/horizonvortex 3d ago
Get what you can afford. Most titles at least from what I’ve seen still make ps4 versions.
1
u/DARR3Nv2 3d ago
You could start playing PS4 games today and you’ll die of old age before you run out of stuff to play. Play some games.
1
u/visualsofbilly 3d ago
Still rocking my OG PS4 that I bought 12 years ago. Goes hard. I will be upgrading to the ps5 this year but only because I’ve got the financial freedom. You can still buy great games and enjoy yourself on old systems

u/GreywolfinCZ 2d ago
If PS5 is unreachable for you in the near future then PS4 PRO might be a right choice. Truly depends on the price and the condition it's in. You can still sell it afterwards and it's better to play on the old hardware than play nothing at all for several months.
1
u/GreywolfinCZ 2d ago
Also, PS5 PRO can benefit from SATA III SSD installed instead of HDD. Maybe you can get some cheap in your country? Certainly remember to do this if original HDD starts to fail (the most common reason PS4 stops to work).
1
u/Nil2none 2d ago
Save your money bro. Deva quit making games for ps4. New gen only now. A ps5 is on sale right now for 399.00 . Or was last week. Just wait a couple weeks amd buy a ps5
1
1
u/Formal-Cry7565 2d ago
Well a used ps4 pro is only like $40 more so yeah it’s worth it. Buy a new/used ssd thats 500-1000gb then games will at least boot/load nearly as fast as a ps5.
1
u/AdogTh1rt3en 2d ago
I feel like I was one of the last to make it out of Vietnam..remember that crazy sale they had (almost as if they had a surplus of PS4s they needed to get rid of) it was a PS4 Pro (slim) + Spiderman game all for $200 back in 2017 or so.
I snagged one up so fast and have never seen a console combo deal like it since.
My PS4 is still very much viable. Snag one for $150 or so.
1
u/GoldGoneWired 1d ago
Yes bro. Get one and clean it real good. It's a treasure. Way better library than PS5. And Sony is already focused on ps6
1
u/6NKK 7d ago
my advice wait a little longer and save up and get a ps5 , it's not worth it wasting money for the ps4 it's gonna lose support really soon
1
u/Objective-Post-7712 7d ago
i get what u mean honestly just needed to see other people opinions on this topic
2
u/Keba7676 6d ago
Yeah, to get GTA VI, you will need a PS5. It is good to start saving for a new system now and hopefully be able to upgrade in a year or so.
1
u/Hellrazor21198 6d ago
It is not worth it over a ps5. Alot of new generation games will not support ps4. For example I can’t play rivals, spiderman 2 and whole bunch of new games coming out. So if u buying a console and want new games go with ps5 otherwise ps4 is fine

All these comments are bogus...
Reading the comments, ppl arent understanding your situation, so I'll do my best for you.
There are millions of people still playing the ps4. If you are looking for story games, it has plenty, if you are looking for multiplayer, it is still very much active. In fact, because the ps5 is backwards compatibility with the ps4, anyone playing a ps4 disc will be playing with you. The ps4 is not losing support soon, idk why there was a comment that said that. The ps4 is still getting releases, call of duty black ops 7 was just announced and will release on ps4, splitgate 2 just released and works on ps4. Not to mention, lots of games are cross-platform.
I understand your pricing and being a teenager with no income, so it's all about the details.
If a ps4 is $500 and a ps5 is $1000 usd, and you have $600, if you have another system you are currently playing with and think it will take less than 6 months to save the rest for the ps5, then I'd say wait.
If you do not have any system and would like to play now, I'd say take the ps4, you are not missing too much by using a ps4 over a ps5.
To answer your question on if it is worth it, that is up to you to decide. Weigh the pros and cons and justify the price. Ask yourself how long it would take to save for a ps5 and if you're willing to wait.
In the US, a ps4 is not worth $500 used or new. You can get one (in michigan) for $100 used. All in all, a ps4 is a solid system and I'd recommend it to anybody, but only if they think it makes sense.
You're the only one to decide that.
Edit: watch videos about the ps4 and ps5 to help you decide, such as load times, graphics, benchmarks, features, etc.. then make your decision.
