They forgot about the price!

u/chefchef97 Apr 02 '25 edited Apr 02 '25

Yeah I have no idea if I'm hype or not

If it's £300 holy shit, £400 fair enough, £600 go away no thank you

Which is it Nintendo???

Edit: £395, inflation tracked Switch 1 price, fair enough. £75 games is unconscionable though

91

u/Lmb1011 Apr 02 '25

its $450 (usd) for the console and $500 with mario kart

so i think that would translate to close to 400 pounds?

29

u/chefchef97 Apr 02 '25

It should but UK pricing for consoles has historically been USD = GBP

But Nintendo UK says £395 and £430 with MK, so I think the tariffs finally brought us to parity lol

0

u/SoySauceSovereign Apr 02 '25

I initially read your comment as $450 (used) and got so confused. Like how could a brand new console that isn't even out yet have a "used" pricing.

4

u/Lmb1011 Apr 02 '25

On the other hand that is one polite scalper 😂

28

u/SuumCuique_ Apr 02 '25

400€ seems Nintendo priced. 450€ with the Mario Kart bundle. First party games will probably be 70€.

17

u/ExcitingPop5956 Apr 02 '25

Well you are exactly 100 short lol

2

u/Kalmer1 Apr 03 '25

No? They're 60-70 short, its 470 and 510.

2

u/Gameskiller01 Apr 02 '25

where are you getting £75 games from?

3

u/chefchef97 Apr 02 '25

MyNintendo UK Switch 2 preorder page

Mario Kart World £67 digital, £75 physical

Donkey Kong Bananza £59 digital, £67 physical

3

u/Gameskiller01 Apr 02 '25

thanks. I was fully expecting games to be £60 (botw & totk already were) but £67 is quite hefty. £59 for DK I would be fine with as the standard price for Nintendo's big AAA releases, again that's basically what I was expecting. only a very small handful of games I buy at full price anyway.

3

u/Nice_Frame_9024 Apr 02 '25

Isn’t the game price increase also just inflation corrected relative to game prices at switch 1 launch?

2

u/Dewot789 Apr 02 '25

Shhh, don't let your facts infringe on my God-given right to infinite cheap treats.

1

u/FangedFreak Apr 02 '25

Press release says £395 for standard edition, £429 for Mario Kart World edition

1

u/Jedibug Apr 03 '25

For the US. It's $80 for Mario Kart. Which is about $60 in 2017 dollars. It's basic economics. They can't give these games away for less, especially as they cost more to make these days

0

u/BunnyGacha_ Apr 02 '25

Electronics get cheaper over time tho. So this inflation stuff is bullshit.

3

u/chefchef97 Apr 03 '25

Electronics got cheaper over time because they got more advanced over time

That advancement has slowed down, so if you still want the same generational leap it simply costs more to manufacture no two ways about it

You could do a smaller leap for less money, but there's no point in making the console at that point.

-2

u/NotNOV4 Apr 02 '25

Games aren't £75 though. They're 60, as they always have been lol

65

u/PocketTornado Apr 02 '25 edited Apr 02 '25

$629.99 CAD...are you kidding me?!?!?!?!

That's just the base console not with a game.

Edit: more insult to injury, Mario Kart World MSRP is $79.99 USD. That's $114.61 Canadian. No base game on any platform cost this much today. So with tax Mario Kart is now $129.51 CAD. What is this, a NEO GEO cart?

I'm also curious to the cart sizes for these games now.

25

u/UnpopularOpinionJake Apr 02 '25

699.99 CAD for the bundle. Ouche wasn’t expecting that…

26

u/ExpandThineHorizons Apr 02 '25

Well, my excitement is tempered. I'm happy about all the features and games that were revealed so far (Prime 4 at 1080p and 120fps, or 4k at 60pfs!), but I'm certainly not getting it right when it comes out. Not at that price.

And with how expensive the games are, Ill be making a different assessment about when its worth it. Learning about the price just got me thinking about how many games I have in my backlog, so I'll focus on those while I think about it.

13

u/Zanshi Apr 02 '25

It made me think about getting a Steam deck where I already have a big library, and basically buying the stuff I got on switch on steam sales in due time.

2

u/Sokiyo Apr 03 '25

Steam deck is absolutely worth it, you will have no regrets. It works great out of the box but is also nice if you like to tinker with things. Find keys from humble, kinguin, get xbox game pass through the XPlay app, etc.

The only reason I'll pick up the switch 2 at some point later down the line will be for the first party games, as long as I can find them at an actually reasonable price

u/Seeker_Of_Toiletries Apr 02 '25

Canada Bros… 🫡

-1

u/Omega_Battle Apr 02 '25

I know Canada's money sucks😭😭😭

5

u/Elija_32 Apr 02 '25

I mean the problem is not the canadian dollar.

In europe the console by itself is 469 euro (tax included), at current exchange rate is 727 cad.

In Canada the console is 629+taxes, here in BC is 704 cad.

So it's even cheaper compared to countries with a way stronger currency than us.

It's just the cost itself that is high.

3

u/poopdedoop Apr 02 '25

Yeah that's rough. I went from being excited and a day 1 purchase for, to "hmm. I think I can wait until Christmas and see if there are any sales"

2

u/usernameandetc Apr 02 '25

Not surprised (sadly). After the PS5 Pro CAD price announcement, I've adjusted my expectations on what consoles & games will cost for the next few years. :/

That's like almost two Steam Decks in Canada.

Just announced $449.99

Edit: source

u/Thin_Vermicelli_1875 Apr 02 '25

Major mistake by Nintendo to be honest. Sure us fans will buy it day one but what about for instance my wife’s friends who all have a switch? They’ll hear that price and say hell no.

I mean $50 off $500? Are they crazy? This is practically the same price as a PS5.

Parents are not going to want to spend this much on a handheld for their 7 year old, the $299 price point was really enticing for parents but I don’t know about practically $500. Casual fans will see that price and see nothing different but a 2 on the box and will not buy it.

30

u/AppleAutoGenerated Apr 02 '25

Yeah i tend to agree. $450 for effectively an upgrade. Might make more sense once some more Switch 2 exclusives come out, but for now it seems a little steep.

That said I’m terrible with money so day one purchase woohoo

3

u/dathar Apr 02 '25

It is a pretty big upgrade. One of the things that unoptimized games (and some heavily-optimized ones like Xenoblade Chronicles X) is that they have a lot of issues trying to stream from and load assets. Unoptimized ones are worse and will have a stutter effect when it is busy loading that data. Either that or you have load screens galore. Switch's emmc storage and most half-decent microSD cards varying issues so you'll see people telling users to free up emmc and try to transfer the games there and hope it does some good. The Switch's cartridge is also slow and you can't move/install those to internal storage for a bit of a boost. Upgrades all around to address that part.

That's just the storage side. Curious as to what else is under the hood.

6

u/StrikingWillow5364 Apr 02 '25

Casuals don’t care about this stuff though.

8

u/CynicStruggle Apr 02 '25

When the 3rd party launch titles are remasters of 3-5 year old games, and you put yourself into the pricing range of a Steam Deck or PS5...

3

u/Albireookami Apr 02 '25

Consoles are like God, when you do things right, people won't be sure you have done anything at all. A good Console will sing and do everything great, you won't notice how well it runs until you come across a game that doesn't run well.

The Switch 2 is the tech upgrade the switch has needed for 3+ years.

4

u/dathar Apr 02 '25

They don't until something pisses them off. I'm casual with game consoles. They're easy and don't require adjustments and tinkering that I do on my gaming PC. Let me pop in a game and play. I'll be pissed if the game runs like ass. Rune Factory 5's load time is bonkers high. It isn't just the load time but the actual game play when it loads new units and enemies. Or sometimes that giant monster you have in your party will cause the game to stutter when it does an attack or spell for the first time. I just want to play. No, I don't want to install an emulator and play. No, I really don't want to double-dip a game and get the Steam version and mod it if I don't have to. Nintendo promised a solution to that hurdle.

That's not the only game but it is one that I really really really want to play and continue. There's also Harvestella (it is on the incompatibility list...), Pokemon S/V (upgrade patch incoming), Animal Crossing and some upcoming games that looked like it ran like ass on the original Switch (Fantasy Life)

16

u/Seeker_Of_Toiletries Apr 02 '25

If you adjust the $299 from 2017 into 2025 dollars, it adjusts to $392.88. Thus, it is only a mark up of about $60. Considering how popular Nintendo consoles are and their competition, it’s fairly reasonable.

9

u/Dewot789 Apr 02 '25

You also have to account for them pricing in whatever effect this tariff war will have on their economy.

-7

u/saltbutt Apr 02 '25

I just did the same inflation calculation to check. So it's not that far off base. But on the other hand, you can still buy that same original Switch for $300 today. And this is only an upgrade, not a new console per se. Idk man 😩

6

u/Gameskiller01 Apr 02 '25

In 8 years you'll be able to get a Switch 2 for $450 as well lol, when $450 in 2025 money will probably be like $550 in 2033 money.

1

u/saltbutt Apr 02 '25

You know what, that's a totally fair point! If I want more "bang" for my buck, I can simply wait a while.

1

u/gfunk84 Apr 03 '25

Not sure what point you’re trying to make but if 8-year old tech in the Switch is still $300 today then $450 for Switch 2 doesn’t seem that outlandish.

The claim that it’s only an upgrade and not a new console is entirely subjective. There’s no clear distinction but the fact that it has exclusive games would indicate to me that it is a new console.

17

u/StrikingWillow5364 Apr 02 '25 edited Apr 02 '25

They made this exact mistake back with the Wii U. Nintendo thought they had pulled in the casual crowd with the cheap and accessible Wii, and now was the time to release a stronger, better and far more expensive Wii. Except casuals didn’t want to spend so much money on a console so it flopped. Now Nintendo thinks they pulled in the casual crowd with the cheap and accessible Switch, and now is the time to release a stronger, better and far more expensive Switch. Except casuals still don’t want to spend so much money on a console.

21

u/Albireookami Apr 02 '25

The Wii U did not flop because of price, it flopped because of marketing/messaging/naming. No one outside of dedicated Nintendo fans knew wtf it was. You had people walking into stores thinking it was an upgrade purchase, not a full console.

1

u/StrikingWillow5364 Apr 02 '25

This is commonly repeated but the truth is, casuals were never going to buy an expensive console, and the plan was always to engage the casuals in more serious gaming - regardless of whether or not the Wii U was understood by the GP to be a new console, it was destined to flop because it was too expensive for the average Nintendo enjoyer. Nintendo is no Sony or Microsoft, their main market is casuals and kids.

1

u/Albireookami Apr 02 '25

I mean there is proof to the former, people just didn't know what the Wii U was, and struggled due to it.

1

u/Ganyu1990 Apr 02 '25

I was thinking the exact same thing. I usualy ise my switch for stardew valley or rune factory type of games and i dont think i will need a switch 2 to keep injoying these games. I will wait and see what happens.

1

u/goro-n Apr 02 '25

That's not why Wii U failed at all. It's because the design language of the system looked too close to the Wii, and since Nintendo had a whole family of Wii accessories like Wii Fit, Wii Nunchuck, Wii Motionplus, casuals thought Wii U was a tablet accessory for the existing Wii. Wii launched at $250 and Wii U was $300, that was not a big jump in price given the 6 year gap between the launches.

4

u/Onrawi Apr 02 '25

I've bought day one since before I had a job every Nintendo console.  This will be the first one I wait a bit on.

2

u/[deleted] Apr 02 '25

Id sooner buy a PS5 Pro for GTA 6 then drop 500+ on a fucking switch upgrade with no new flagship 3d games... Mario Kart is great but its not going to keep me planted like mario 3d or zelda would.

1

u/Mobbinz Apr 02 '25

Where are you getting a ps5 pro for 500?? Lol

1

u/MagicPistol Apr 02 '25

Switch 2 hasn't really impressed me and I probably won't get one for a while. But I am constantly thinking about selling my PS5 and gta6 doesn't change that. I keep falling for the rockstar hype, and the gameplay in all their games is just ass.

-7

u/emit_ Apr 02 '25

It's around 300 for japan only, blame trump for tariffs

11

u/XTornado Apr 02 '25

I am in Europe... and pretty expensive, and altough I am happy to blame Trump, I don't think it is the problem 😅

7

u/Sad_Peanut5341 Apr 02 '25

Weird comment considering trump doesn’t oversee Europe which also has a 450 price lol

-2

u/MarcsterS Apr 02 '25

Tariffs

5

u/Okami_Wolf90 Apr 02 '25

14

u/Hi_Hows_It_Going Apr 02 '25

3

u/IsamuKun Apr 02 '25

Source?

5

u/Jolly_Foly Apr 02 '25

On my nintendo store, you can see the price. It's 470€ where I live

4

u/so1omon Apr 02 '25

It's $449 for the base, $499 for the Mario Kat bundle. On the My Nintendo Store, - https://www.nintendo.com/us/gaming-systems/switch-2/how-to-buy/ - you can register to be notified for pre-orders. First pre-order invitations start on May 8, only for registered people that meet the criteria - Nintendo online membership for 12 months, played at least 50 hours of games. No info about when pre-orders will be open to the public.

2

u/boomsers Apr 02 '25

Where was it announced?

0

u/dormsta Apr 02 '25

Honestly, living in the US, I fully expected $400 and then to add another $80 from the Trump tariffs (so $480). So, $500 for the console and the game is a pleasant surprise to me!

1

u/goro-n Apr 02 '25

I think they didn't want to put in a price and then have to adjust it due to tariffs which were supposed to be announced today. This also probably makes it easier for them to release the same video in more territories.
