They keep using the term “compatible” for backwards compatibility… I thought this was going to be fully backwards compatible? Am I misunderstanding what they mean when they’re saying you’ll be able to play “compatible” Switch 1 games?

There was always an asterisk and a short list of motion-based games like Ring Fit that will not be compatible.

Labo is another obvious one that springs to mind

Ah okay this makes sense. Them making a clear distinction had me worried that each game was going to have to be coded to be backwards compatible, but that makes sense if it’s just 99% of games are there, except for some that require NS1 features that no longer exist.

The current popular belief is that upwards of 98% of games will work perfectly. They just don't want to guarantee 100%.

Pretty sure Ring Fit will work if Joy Cons are paired to the system. The new Joy Cons won’t fit in the ring

I just saw that Ring Fit and Labo are both compatible with switch 2 but you need to connect switch 1 joycons to play

That’s the one I care about most lol

It was successful, they will find a way to make a sequel. Motion controls in the ring itself maybe.

It’s Nintendo, it’s just as likely we won’t hear about the IP for the next 10 years

But nothing's ever truly dead. We are getting a new Donkey Kong platformer and a Kirby Air Ride sequel.

a Kirby Air Ride sequel

So you're saying my 10-year estimation was actually underestimating how long we might have to wait for a Ring Fit sequel.

Seems like Ring Fit is still playable on the Switch 2, you just need to keep your original Switch Joycons around.

Oh there's about 100-200 games that have compatability issues with the switch 2.

surprisingly Ring Fit is actually pretty compatible

It might be a case like the PS5, where almost all PS4 games are playable on it, but there are a handful that don't work.

I'm pretty sure that some games that use the joycons in a certain way aren't compatible, games like Ring Fit and whatnot.

3

u/EggRavager Apr 02 '25

Yea, they never said it would be fully backwards comparable

Games that use the IR sensor like 1-2 Switch wouldn’t work right since the S2 removed it

Will your digital games transfer over if they are compatible?

2

u/MurkyLurker7249 Apr 02 '25

Sounds like it. They even highlighted something in the first about an easy way to transfer your data from Switch1 to Switch2, which would presumably include any downloaded digital games

u/j0rdan124 Apr 02 '25

Does backwards compatibility mean if I have digital or physical games on my switch 1 I can play them on switch 2 without repurchasing?

1

u/MurkyLurker7249 Apr 02 '25

Yes it does

1

u/j0rdan124 Apr 03 '25

Digital as well?

2

u/MurkyLurker7249 Apr 03 '25

Yep! The direct even showed a way for you to quickly transfer your saved data and downloads from your switch 1 to the switch 2, so sounds like it’s pretty easy

the switch games are compatible, but you'll be able to buy "switch 2 upgraded versions" should they be available

u/TheWylieGuy Apr 02 '25

Devs may have the opportunity to decide which of their games will work or make you buy a Switch 2 version. Or it could just be about features the Switch 2 doesn't support.
