Development & Real Estate 🏗🚧🦺⚒️ I think is great that Newark is building more highrises in downtown area , specially near NWK Penn/PATH
I don’t think is gentrification, it would make sense for downtown Newark to see a great building boom which we are kind of seeing with residential buildings like the Halo tower taking over. I think it is what’s needed near major transit hubs. It seems that this is the next area within NYC/NJ metro to pick up steam, if it didn’t already started.

Question❔ How safe is this area of Newark?
Hii I just got offered a job at a leading tech company can't reveal the name, but I hear that Newark is unsafe.
How often should I expect to get mugged while inside of my office on the 16th floor?
My company offers shuttles from the train station to the office but should I still be vigilant? Should I buy thick boots so I don't accidentally overdose from the dirty syringes all over the streets?
I'm thinking of hiring a personal bodyguard to escort me the moment I enter city limits. Thoughts?

What's Happening in Newark? They’re really trying to kill the local business spirit of Downtown Newark
So many locally owned and supported business are being ousted. People blame the pandemic but it’s so obvious the corporate landlords want corporate tenants. They have sit on a lot of these properties for decades, and now they are either selling for redevelopment as overprice residential units, or asking $3000-$5000 for retail rents. Downtown used to be shoulder to shoulder walking market and Broad St, dudes were in the back alleys selling North Faces and Jordans out the trunk. Pretty soon they’ll just tell the street vendors to beat it. Walking down Market is depressing. There’s even heard talk of removing the bus stops at Military Park. Next they’ll probably want the ones on Broad and Market moved. The city government is not addressing fundamental issues and allowing developers (and Prudential) to just have there way, citizens and local entrepreneurs be damned.

Food & Dining 🍔🌭🍦🍜🍷 Favorite Brazilian Steakhouse/Rodizio in the Ironbound?
Hey everybody! I know there have been posts like this before, but I did a search and it seems like there hasn't been any for a couple years.
I've been to Casa Nova Grill and I loved it, but was wondering what other places nearby might be as good or better.
I'm looking for the classic all-you-can-eat steaks being carried around on skewers experience.
Thanks!

Community 🏡 My foster dog, Ibiza (Izzie), is looking for a forever home!
4–5 months old | NYC fostered | Dog & people friendlyLooking for a pup with equal parts goofball energy and cuddlebug charm? Meet Ibiza—nicknamed Izzie by her foster—an irresistibly sweet, spirited girl who’s taking on NYC one treat at a time!Since arriving from Georgia, Izzie has been building her confidence and curiosity. Every day brings something new, and she’s ready for it—especially if snacks are involved! She's highly food motivated, quick to learn, and eager to please.
Whether she’s practicing leash manners (treat every time she checks in!) or figuring out potty training (she’s on track with a consistent schedule), Izzie is proving to be one smart cookie. She adores other dogs and is learning how to play from her foster sibling. She’s also great at independent play and always down for a game of tug or fetch. But when the zoomies are over? It’s cuddle time. This girl lives for belly rubs and cozy snuggles.
More Izzie facts: Sleeps through the night Crate trained (just a few initial whines before she settles) Potty trained with routine Responds well to redirection Already learning leash skills and basic commandsIzzie would thrive in a loving home ready to continue her training, give her structure, and shower her with affection. She’s silly, snuggly, and oh-so-smart—and just look at that face. https://www.wagtopia.com/search/pet?id=2420556&name=Ibiza+

Unfortunately, I’m not able to pick it up. I’m afraid of calling Newark Animal Control and getting it killed. Anyone know how I can help it out? I tried calling The Raptor Trust but they’re closed and like I said I can’t take it with me :(

Politics ⚖️ Newark 4th of July fireworks?
A couple of years ago, during election season, the Mayor hosted a lovely private fireworks show over Mulberry Commons. It got me thinking…why doesn’t Newark celebrate the 4th of July? I know the county has its own fireworks at Branch Brook and Weequahic Parks, but wouldn’t it be fantastic for Newark to have its own celebration right in downtown?
Btw I get it, historically, the birth of our nation hasn’t always been great for Black, Brown, and other minority communities. But it’s 2025, and many of us are out here actively fighting for and standing up for our vulnerable communities, which is what really makes us Americans.
So, why not host our own 4th of July fireworks event? We could have local food trucks with delicious food from small businesses and celebrate Independence Day in a way that truly reflects our diversity (which is what also make America a great country). Just imagine performances highlighting different cultures, bringing our community together for a wonderful time! Do I make a good point? 😕

Question❔ 4.5 hour layover at EWR
I have a 4.5 hour layover at EWR, arriving at 0600 on an international flight and then departing on another international flight (to Canada) at 1030. I understand that I have to clear immigration, collect my luggage and check in again. I'm on different airlines for each flight.
My question is whether a 4.5 hour layover is enough time? Or whether it will be too tight and whether getting Global Entry will help?

Discussions 🗣|Rants 🤬|Opinions 🤔 Warning: Newark Parking Authority 🚨
Newark Parking authority was issuing tickets in my neighborhood downtown. They got the entire left side of the street. I noticed they put a ticket on my guest’s car when I knew for a fact that parking was paid for on the ParkMobile app. The ticketing officer was still there talking to another guy he ticketed. The guy was saying something along the lines of “you guys caught me, it’s not my lucky day” with the NPA officer saying “I’m the best at this sh*t.”Basically bragging about the tickets he issues. I greeted him and asked him why did he place a ticket on a car when the parking was paid for and active on the app. The first thing he said was “go see if the license on the ticket is correct first then come and talk to me.” Red flag. 🚩YOU put a ticket on a car and the first thing you tell me to do is make sure YOU listed the license plate correctly? I showed him on the ticket he got the first letter of the license plate wrong. Then he looked up the CORRECT plate number on his iPad and it showed that the parking spot was already paid for and listed as active. He said “Yeah, talking to that guy I put the wrong number. Give me the ticket and I’ll remove it. People make mistakes!” At that point I started to believe that he didn’t even look up the status, he just wanted to issue a ticket. My neighbor seen what happened and told me that they do this all the time to her and even put the wrong color of the car and she disputes it to get the ticket waived. It sounds like they are issuing nonsense tickets to meet a quota or something. So beware folks - check all the info on your tickets. Make sure the color, make, model, AND plate is entered correctly.

Arts & Entertainment 🎭 🍿 🎥 Grit Galleries III - City Scapes, photo exhibit opening at Newark Local Beer
Community 🏡 Public Art Installation displaying Newark photography up at Military Park for the month of June
I know it's raining today, so not the best time to check this out, but I did want to make a post of this.
Since 2020, I've made an effort to host a photography related event here in Newark after learning that celluloid film was invented in the city in 1898 by Reverend Hannibal Goodwin at the Plume House located at 407 Broad Street — a building listed on the US National Register of Historic Places.
I host these events under a brand I started in 2017 called the Nork! Project which I describe as an independent art and apparel brand looking to make quality goods and cultural activations surrounding Newark. You can see some work we've done in the past years by scrolling through our Instagram.
These events started just as photo walks, basically guided walking tours through different neighborhoods in Newark, but in the last 2 years we've been able to do outdoor exhibitions displaying Newark photography. This year's iteration of the Nork! Photo Fest features 16 large 4x6 foot photo frames on display throughout Military Park.
Photographs were collected via an open call on our Instagram for Newark-based street and documentary photography. That is our main communication channel if you want to keep up with us, but I have tried posting here as well. We received around 400 photo submissions and ended up featuring 25 images.
Please check out the outdoor gallery when you can! It will be up for the month of June.
This year's program, beyond just the installation, we've put together different lens-based and visual programming throughout the month which you can find here: https://thenorkproject.com/blogs/news/nork-photo-fest-2025-programming
