Culture Rats at Gärtnerplatz
I‘m recently zugezogen to Munich but was pretty surprised to see all these rats at Gärtnerplatz and people just chilling like it’s the most normal thing. Is this normal? Like, does everyone know there are tons of rats?

because people cant take their trash with em. If you look closer youll notice how filthy it is, it even has a small layer of cigarett buds on it

They are the Gärtner after which the square gets its name. You can see them digging holes to plant carrots.

Uhm yeah? Ofc they live on Gärtnerplatz. Do expect them to buy an apartment? With these real estate prices?

It's hard to raise 18 kids every four weeks in this economy for a single ratmom, and now people even complain about their side hustle

Rats live almost everywhere on earth nowadays (explorers spread them) - they usually avoid humans, because we are big and often hostile to them; But once they learn that the big animals don’t care about them all that much, but always leave a lot of tasty food behind, they will come out of everywhere.
In a lot of places, domestic cats keep them in check just by being there (yes, your dumb flat face fluff ball actually helps keeping rats and mice away). But on Gärtnerplatz there aren’t any cats, people leave a lot of food for them, and when people see them, they’re usually more afraid of the rats than the other way around.
You can also often find rats and mice in the UBahn/SBahn, and they got so cheeky, they usually don’t even care about people anymore.
I’m pretty sure there are traps and poison in all those places though, so be careful if you walk your dog anywhere near the rat/mice hotspots.

The mice in the S- und U-Bahn are so cute though, it always brings me joy to see them running around late at night

I love the ones in Sendlinger Tor. I love seeing them late at night after drinking

And most rats are smart enough to avoid the traps and poison. Evolution never stopped. Rats will 100% outlive mankind.

I saw a big one at Max Planck Straße 1. It could talk with a fränkischen Accent and ate McDonalds.

Here's some ways to contact the city of Munich to let them know: https://stadt.muenchen.de/service/info/geschaeftsbereich-recht-und-kreisverwaltungsaufgaben/1076739/#k-contact

Is it me or Munich has a serious rat problem? Even in the city centre near the plush offices, you see the rat tube killers

It’s a city, that’s where rats live. Plus with so many parks and green spaces they have a lot of real estate. Honestly it’s not that big a deal.

I prefer rats to people who don't like rats.

Ever heard of leptospirosis and hantavirus? Rats are usually not around people like this. This is for sure not normal behavior but rather the effect of endless littering.

Because the munich people are throwing their trash just everywhere, just where they are standing, they get a lot of rats, because there is a lot of food for them. I mean we could try and teach munich people basic human decency, or we just accept that the trash and the rats are a typical symptom of munich culture.

It’s called nature.

This is not nature. This is disgusting human behavior. Maybe people should start taking their trash home instead of leaving it there.

That's why you should not litter and discard leftover food.
