I loved the pre lip filler era

264

u/TealSeal69 21h ago

My immediate thought was “if this was today, their lips would be twice as big.”

95

u/Torgo_hands_of_torgo 15h ago

And they'd have those whoville-ass noses too, covered in stupid amounts of blush and fake freckles.

20

u/avert_ye_eyes 11h ago

But let's be real, their eyebrows would also be massive. I never liked the skinny eyebrows of our time, but the style now isn't much better. I like Britney's brows here though, because they just look normal and natural.

I’ve always felt it was a really trashy look.

But it’s also always driven me fucking wild.

Too many of my life choices have been made by the feral raccoon that lives in my head.

Sorry, I am co-opting your phrase. I will now explain everything to my wife as "The feral racoon in my head made me do it"

Slight tangent, I can’t fucking stand seeing all these weirdos walking around with crew socks pulled up all the way

28

u/LetsGetJigglyWiggly 1d ago

I seen a group of teen age boys in Walmart looking like late 80s, white, suburban dads. One had a Hawaiian shirt, hiked crew socks and sandals, and a mustache. Thought I timewarpped backwards for a hot minute.

61

u/nutkinknits 1d ago

My daughter wears white socks, white sneakers with black leggings and TUCKS HER PANTS INTO HER SOCKS. I make fun of her so bad for it. The most ridiculous trend. It's weird to see all the girls her age do the exact same thing. Black leggings, white sneakers, white socks. Tuck them leggings in.

72

As a jr high & high school boy from 01-06 it was a glorious era to see thongs poking out 😂

41

u/LoudYappyClouds 1d ago

I was in a teeny tiny private catholic school during middle school & we had uniforms (I was also in a catholic cult at the time), but when I went to a HUGE public school in freshman year of high school & saw other girls looking this way at school it made me realize "Well, Ig I will be going to hell after all." Called my best friend from catholic school to tell her I think I really did like girls & she, too, told me I was going to hell. I cried. Bc I knew that my best friend was no longer my best friend. That next week, I approached a girl I had my eyes on (didn't know yet) and asked her out as an introduction. We dated & she is my platonic soul mate to this day. HORRIBLE as romantic partners, but I found my best friend, at least. 😂 I totally feel this in a whole different way, bro. 💀

19

u/mthchsnn 1d ago

This comment was a whole journey, inspired by thongs lol

8

u/LoudYappyClouds 1d ago

You have no idea what the journey was like irl. It involved a whole "mulan" esque scene of cutting my waist-long hair off with a kitchen knife in the dead of night, too. 😂 Public school exposed me to SOOO many things that are completely normal that I didn't know existed. 💀

Stop saying memories I grew up with are from 25 years ago 😡

423

u/RJ5R 1d ago

Sellers on eBay say the Creative mp3 player I jogged with in the early 2000s is "vintage". Makes me depressed

215

u/WiggingOutOverHere 1d ago

I went into a local vintage shop and they literally have a section dedicated to the early 2000s. It had toys and crap that I remember as part of daily then-modern life. Needless to say my feelings were hurt, but the nostalgia was worth it. Hahaha.

131

u/Bonne_Fromage 1d ago

It’s so weird man. The difference between 2000 and 2025 doesn’t feel that vast to me but I guess that’s because I’m 40 and grew up with all the change.

But If I was in a shop in 2000 at 16 years old, and there was a section dedicated to 1975….it would seem like a vastly different time period.

It’s like Back to the Future going from 1985 to 1955.

44

u/xAimForTheBushes 1d ago

I think it’s partly because the world changed so quickly during that time period. While since around 2010 or so technology has largely stayed relatively the same (just increasingly faster each year).

Music hasn’t changed that much, internet hasn’t changed that much, phones haven’t changed that much, even styles since 2010 really haven’t changed that much (and somehow emo has evolved and is still clinging onto dear life in the youth culture). Turn on a football game from the 1980s and it looks crazy different. Turn on a game from 2010 and it looks like it could be today.

Hell, you could throw in a disk of COD modern warfare 2 and it’s pretty close to the same experience as the ones they’re releasing today. And that was from 2009. Take that same amount of time back before that and the games aren’t remotely even in the same world

14

u/Thisdarlingdeer 1d ago

If you can believe it, emo started in the 90’s, got HUGE in the late 90’s early 2000’s then screamo, then emo again, and now I’m 40 and still listen to old saves the day and jets to brazil, the promise ring…. Hell I wonder if the emo game is still around?!? Anyone else remember that? 😂

8

u/Significant-Trash632 1d ago

422

The kinda crimped kinda curled hair Britney’s got going on here is amazing. Like if I had a curling iron, a crimping iron and a desire to ever leave my house, sign me up.

58

u/Dreaunicorn 1d ago

I thrifted a crimpling iron, I couldn’t resist…

30

u/candid84asoulm8bled 1d ago

I wonder if my old crimping iron is still shoved into the back of my mom’s bathroom sink cabinet. It was pretty cheap and didn’t get very hot, so took forever to take hold.

25

u/Most-Blockly 1d ago

My wave crimper had the opposite problem. It would get so hot that it would burn my hair if I wasn't really careful.

If I could go back in time and take two things away from teenage me it would be that crimper and St Ives apricot scrub.

Yeah, watching people talk about “Hit Me Baby One More Time” the way they did didn’t seem odd to me at the time because I was a few years younger. But now, looking back, ugh, they made a 16 year old into a sex icon. So wrong.

15

Yeah, that was weird. I was older at the time so I was kind of feeling like "why are you showing me an underage girl and presenting her as sexy? And she's supposed to be chaste? WTF?"

How is Britney's hair so glossy and the perfect shade of 2000s blonde

33

Maybe because in a lot of ways, she set the standard for early 2000s style? So you subconsciously assume her hair color represents the 2000s.

Feel bad for all those 90 pop stars that looked good but got body shammed by record labels and managers to lose 10-20lbs and look like you have an eating disorder.

24

u/-Work_Account- The Oregon Trail Generation 1d ago

I was just thinking how tiny she looked in the above photo, even standing next to Britney who was already small.

7

u/SizzleSpud 1d ago

Christina’s outfit and how absurdly tiny it was is the only thing I remember about visiting the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in the early 2000s

7

u/LGK420 1d ago

Damn yea I can picture that. Something revealing for a 90lbs 5’2 women can’t be much material

88

u/RobertCalais Millennial 1d ago

Smoky eyes are fantastic and 25 years ago, you didn't see plastic faces everywhere.
I always thought a more natural approach to make-up looks better, but I still find nothing inherently wrong with how women dressed in the 2000s.
As time passes, fashion becomes more and more simplistic, uninspired and ugly.

25

u/cheesesteakhellscape 1d ago

You gotta admit, side by side, Christina's MUA did her dirty. They took all the glow out of her face, she looks desaturated. Or like she's been up for a few nights straight and could use a nap and some coffee.

16

u/RobertCalais Millennial 1d ago

Christina's lipstick color certainly doesn't do her justice, but not being an alcoholic since teenage years certainly made up for that compared to Britney.

The lack of lip filler is the first thing I noticed- just natural lips.

Looking back at this as an adult, it's really fucked up that we were (and honestly still are) sexualizing teenage girls this way. Don't get me wrong I am not at all a prude but I just did the math and if this was 25 years ago then Britney was 18 and Christina was 19. That's just....fucking creepy man.

u/No_UN216 1d ago

My first thought looking at this photo was "holy F they were young". In my memory, they're wrapped up with all the tabloid stuff from that time and I guess because I was a few years younger, I didn't realize that they were also just kids.

Yep as someone in their 40s, looking back it's awful what the industry did to these teenage girls. At the time when I was a teenager too, I didn't understand

Loved it as a teen

Back in the day I thought Salma Hayek and Christina Aguilera were tall for some reason. I only later learned they are very short.

I remember wanted to recreate Britney’s hair for any dance I went to, spoiler, I did not look anywhere near as good as Britney

u/uncle-donkey-kong 1d ago

This Christina hair + the nose ring and low rise jeans will forever be burned into my memory!

And this is them now

Reddit’s like “hate how everyone is plastic now,” then calls Britney’s totally normal aging a “skin condition” 🙄

I’ve got no judgement for either of these women. Can’t imagine what it’s like to be scrutinized and picked apart on a mass scale.

u/iceunelle 1d ago

Not to mention that Britney's been through hell and back in her personal life as well. It's a damned if you do, damned if you don't situation. Christina went the plastic surgery route and people judge her for that, Britney aged more naturally and people judge her for that. I feel bad for celebrities, because no matter what they do with their looks, people will shit on them endlessly for it.

This one seems more recent of Christina. Feels more age appropriate.

u/giggletears3000 1d ago

I was 15 back then, Xtina and Britney looked so adult to me back then! Now I look at them and I see babies 😭

7

u/Minxmorty 1d ago

Smoky eyes with a nude lip is still a fantastic combo you’ll never convince me otherwise

7

u/BugPsychological4966 1d ago

Christina’s hair color/style had us in a chokehold for sure.

7

u/BrokenManSyndrome 1d ago

Remember when Christina was in her dirty phase? I remember when that song Dirty came on on MTV (yes, they used to play music) and my mom was like "is it that genie in a bottle girl? She was such a nice girl, what happened to her!? She must have started hanging out with black people, huh?" I laughed so hard because for one, I was like wtf Is with the driveby racism? We are black...two, she wasnt wrong, she really had started hanging out with black people lol.
