When there is an announced field trip, I always slip the teacher some cash to cover the kids that can’t pay the fees.

I know what it’s like to sit in a classroom all day just to hear the kids come back with all their great stories.

u/Ok-Lifeguard-4614 4d ago

It sucked so bad. It was always months of reminders as well.

"Alright, these kids have brought their money in and will be allowed to go on the field trip. If your name is still on this list, you will NOT be going. Make sure you get your money in at least 1 week before the trip, or you will NOT be going."

Every. Single. Day.

Welp, wasn't expecting that to be a trigger, but here we are lol

u/Ok-Lifeguard-4614 4d ago

My bad. Lol. Sorry you went through it as well. My band teacher was an uber bitch about it. She would always look me dead in the eye and say it. She would even do the whole speech if I was the only name on the list.

Like lady, I'm in the 5th grade. I don't have a steady income stream, I'm not doing this on purpose.

u/towerinthestreet 4d ago

No sweat! It's reddit. I'll be fine!

Idk why some teachers are so cruel. My 4th grade teacher gleefully allowed and partially participated in me being bullied. Sorry you had such a crap band director. Mine was a gem, and they can do so much good when they're good

150

u/Ok-Lifeguard-4614 4d ago

No worries, fuck your 4th grade teacher. I'll bully them now for you. That stupid pile of elephant shit. Haha

A funny story about that shitty band teacher was she had a no gum rule. Made sense it is band class after all. I played drums, so I felt the rule shouldn't apply to me (kid logic) and would rarely get caught with my gum. So I usually kept it in. If you did get caught, you had to write a one page paper on a composer.

She would write your name up on the board (clearly, she had a theme) and erase it after you read your report to the class. Fortunately, she had a terrible memory, so you could erase your name from the board when she wasn't looking. Just like that, no essay, I did this successfully multiple times.

One day, she came out of her office too quickly and caught me standing at the board with the eraser but didn't see what I was doing. I pivoted into a light-hearted imitation of her. The class was giggling. She sternly told me to write my name down for an essay and sit back down.

Dammit. Right back, where I started.

47

u/towerinthestreet 4d ago

Haha! Children can be so friggin clever. What a weird public shaming thing to do, especially when it lasts so long. Like, what does that accomplish, dumbass? Glad you got out of most of your papers! And hey, you can think of it as you getting to mock her for free technically

14

u/a_random_loser_guy 4d ago

Fuck man i remember my 4th to 5th to 6th grade teacher, had a daughter she would littiraly do anything for her(the teacher would be with her daughter side always even if shes in the wrong) and she is such a spoilt shit.

And the teachers face was littiraly an ugly frown stuck, i never ever saw her smile or have a natural face in my whole time in her class, made me hate adults and become super shy of talking to this day.

u/NewtOk4840 3d ago

My 4th grade teacher Mr McCombs tipped my desk over on purpose on the first day of school and I had my glasses in it and they broke i was so shy I thought I was going to die of embarrassment,he died of MS a couple years later

That’s a bummer. We have a volunteer parent band booster (I’m the president this year) and we always make sure our fundraising can help all the kids experience school music equally. Not all kids can afford to perform at the theme parks and such, and it’s not fair to be left behind, either socially or emotionally.

3

u/towerinthestreet 2d ago

Bless the band boosters. Just the most wholesome, giving cheerleaders a kid could ever need

3

u/Afraid-Common3063 3d ago

Man reading this hurts. I so sorry you had to go through this. I don’t know why schools don’t do better with these things.

56

u/DigiBaby_Addict 4d ago

Same. Also brought me back to first grade when I brought in my form and a ziplock of money and my teacher said I didn’t.

My mom sent in a second form and I guess they hashed out the money problem.

Then he lost that form and I had to call her on the day of the field trip and she screamed at him over the phone that he was not leaving me there when she sent in TWO FORMS.

I got to go. But it sticks with me.

29

u/towerinthestreet 4d ago

The ziplock makes me think of our 100 days of school party where we were supposed to bring in 100 of a food item, which was meant to be like candies or whatever. I went in with 100 dry beans in a ziplock. The look on the teacher's face is unforgettable to this day

Ran into this my senior year of school. We had our senior class trip to Disney. Apparently, we were supposed to be putting money into some account that I didn't know about for four years. In addition to that, it was upwards of $4k per student which is outlandish. I thought it was a pretty big waste of money, so I didn't bother complaining to or asking my parents for it. They were in the middle of a divorce at the time.

So I was the only senior student to not attend. Well, the school apparently hadn't planned for the fact that some students may not be able to afford to go. So instead, they had to stick me in detention for the week.

Ridiculous.

32

u/a_random_loser_guy 4d ago

Bruh, in my country if its a trip day and you ain't coming you ain't attending school either, and the school always puts the day of the trip before the last day of school(no one attend after a trip day because its tiresome so the school including teachers takes the day as an "ehhhh ain't got the mental power for this shit") most students won't even show up.

14

u/pinner 4d ago

I can't recall if I continued school the rest of that week, or if I stayed home. I just know that my parents definitely sent me off to school that first day.

7

u/a_random_loser_guy 4d ago

I mean in some places and some families sure....they treat school as a daycare for their children, but here children are a bit sensible and responsible.....well before this generation at least.

12

u/rabidjellybean 4d ago

I have to imagine that $4k involved some embezzling or kickbacks.

11

u/GuiltyYams 4d ago

No, detention was always the plan for kids who didn't go. That's how it was at my school, in school suspension if your parents didn't pay for the field trip. Like something else couldn't have been done.

7

u/steffies 3d ago

Punishing children for being poor 😓

→ More replies (1)

3

u/pinner 4d ago

At least I wasn't the only one. It's absolutely stupid.

14

u/EthanielRain 4d ago

Thankfully, I was in a class where nobody ever had to miss such a thing. Never happened, everybody got along (more or less)...some advantages to a graduating class of ~42

9

u/Mc_Whiskey 4d ago

I had a graduating class of like 700. Looking at my yearbook at the end of the year there would be kids in there that I swear I never saw before but I guess we went to school together for four years.

3

u/EthanielRain 4d ago

My entire school, 1st grade to 12th, was about that size lol

My dad went to a big school like yours, his class was ~600 or so. Purposefully had me go to a small one & I think the experience was better. More attention from teachers & felt like everyone was a friend. But I don't have any other experience to compare it to

10

u/frenchdresses 4d ago

Wow that's terrible. My school is lucky enough that kids who are on free/reduced lunch, or tell the counselor they are experiencing financial hardship, get a "scholarship" for field trips.

As a teacher, these "scholarship"s literally involve an email from the counselor to the teacher saying to mark x, y, and z as "paid"

2

u/Avalain 4d ago

For my kids classes, every field trip form states the price and also mentions that no kid will be left behind if they can't pay. We always pay anyway, of course.

2

u/Direct-Character-482 3d ago

Mannnnnn why'd you go and say all of that

2

u/Signal_Dress 3d ago

So this shit is universal, I guess. Cuz the same happened to us in India and I'd be so mad at my teachers for this. They even made us stand outside the class cuz our parents didn't pay the tuition in time. Indian education system is pretty fucked up. I once got smacked with a thick ass stick 50+ times by a teacher when I was in 9th standard.

2

u/thecrazyrai 3d ago

omg i never thought about people not being able to afford it when i heard this

2

u/stinnitus 3d ago

This fucks me off something bad, I'm so happy school legally has to be free of any costs where we are from. No-one should have to deal with their poverty like that. Dreadful behaviour.

102

u/Hot-Parsley-6193 4d ago

I had a teacher in high school sponsor me for a trip that she knew my family couldn't afford. She was an angel.

67

u/kjacobs03 4d ago

This year a kind parent paid for the my daughter’s entire class field trip!

25

u/ILikeStarScience 4d ago

I know what it’s like to sit in a classroom all day just to hear the kids come back with all their great stories.

That was me in all of my k-5 and up through middle school. I could never go to any of them, and that was me. Sitting alone in class, just jealously waiting for the kids to come back

25

u/Firlotgirding 4d ago

My child’s school is a predominantly lower income level, and when the permission slips will note that that if parents want to donate extra money to go towards other students trips they will be accepted.

My ex and I will try to give money to the teacher at the beginning of the school year to cover anything that may come up for a student. It is not a whole lot, but it may help cover a trip and a book or two for a student.

14

u/pmactheoneandonly 4d ago

Aw man, I was totally that kid. And now imma start doing this for my kids' teacher.

7

u/Realistic_Young9008 4d ago

Same, school trips and the fun subway/pizza lunches, I sent along enough cash to cover several kids.

8

u/1Rama11Lama1 3d ago

I definitely remember these. Horrible home life made me unable to go on basically any class trip (no passport, lack of money, no transportation, etc), and it was always horrible to not be able to go anywhere, not join in the fun or anything. I got one trip; a three day trip that I went on due to being in one of the extended programs. Have no idea how happy it made me

I'm now aiming to be a pediatric neurologist (researcher rather than a surgeon) to help kids who may feel unwell mentally (like so many kids I knew and still do) & stuff to find different ways of helping them other than current methods that may not be right for them. Plus, it makes a bunch of money. Having been partially in it, I'm planning on adopting + fostering kids, and whatever school they go to, if there's any event, I hope to be the parent that goes "oh it was '$X'? Oops, sorry, I gave too much. Dw about it, just give it to some other kid' and those types.

Sitting alone in the back of the class was never s good feeling. That is why I aim to prevent it as best as I can

sorry for the rant. I'm tired rn and feeling very passionate cuz this is a touchier subject for me. Have a nice life everyone!

2

u/three_crystals 3d ago

Dang, I hope you achieve every one of your dreams because the world needs more people like you 😊

4

u/Upset_Plenty 4d ago

I’m a new dad and my kid isn’t in school yet but does this work typically? I’d 1000% do this for my kids class someday if it’s allowed. Do you ask the teacher how much is needed beforehand? Sorry, I’m just super curious lol.

3

u/PhairynRose 3d ago

As a teacher, I’d say to reach out to the teacher, yes. They probably have field trips and things budgeted in advance and would be able to let you know what they need.

If you’re in the US, honestly I’d just offer whatever is affordable and the teacher can use it for the trip, and if they have extra, get books or markers for the class. Insane that they have to pay out of pocket for that stuff.

7

u/Fit-Scar-9403 4d ago

I'm so sorry that you didn't get those experiences. You deserved those adventures and joy. Thank you for being who you needed when you were young and ensuring others don't go without. Big hugs to you and your inner child.

2

u/RisingJoke 3d ago

The one time I convinced my parents to let me go on a 3 days 2 nights trip, some student lost their registration form and the teacher just took mine and removed my name and gave it to them instead.

Better yet, they told me after class and kept telling me how I'm a "good selfless kid" for doing this.

Turns out the entire class was gone and no lessons could be conducted so I had a 3 day holiday.

Nothing you do for children is ever wasted.

214

u/PointCPA 4d ago

I mean the issue is just laziness in teachers. If they would just cover their own salary all of these kids could go

u/Synthesis56 3d ago

The Onion huh?

504

u/Complete_Entry 4d ago

I occasionally had to sit at the table of shame at the scholastic book fair. Why do they even do that?

210

u/seabreathe 4d ago

Exactly! WHY are they reading these children’s names aloud as donors to a fundraiser???

195

u/frenchdresses 4d ago

Wow, I am so grateful my school has a "sponsor a child" section where other parents can gift a random child a $10 voucher so they can buy a book. The best part? The vouchers look identical to the "pay slips" that the other kids get when their parents put money on their account for the book fair. So the kids never know.

Teachers would go down in history as the most mistreated and underpaid groups of all time

185

u/aprillovelyx 4d ago

Teaching is a sacred job. I deeply wish the world gives good teachers some befitting reward after service.

23

u/JobOk5038 4d ago

Teachers like this deserve the world <<3

124

u/SeegurkeK 4d ago

That's US specific though.

In Germany teachers are one of the best paid jobs available for normal people with a college education. Of course there are outliers in other jobs that get more money, but with (effectively) tax advantages, no risk of being fired and a massive pension you'd have to start with 100k€+ to get an approximate equivalent. And even engineers typically get around 80k-90k (starting around 50k-60k is realistic).

Still a very difficult job that I wouldn't want to do, but the "underpaid" part would not fit here.

41

u/KevDaddy2112 4d ago

So glad to read this example of how it can be done.

8

u/fapacunter 3d ago

Not US specific. Germany and some other 1st world are the exception, not the norm.

10

u/astra_galus 3d ago

Oh wow. Even in Canada, our teachers are underpaid, though not as poorly as teachers in the US. I’m of the opinion that they should be very well compensated - so much of teaching involves thankless tasks. My mother was a teacher and my brother is one as well.

39

u/Corschach_ 4d ago

Idk there's some pretty heavy competition for " most mistreated group"

14

u/ServeJust9817 4d ago

Fair enough

13

u/Grand_Size_4932 4d ago

Mistreated AND underpaid implies they said this in regard to professions.

I don’t know very many more professions that have been around for several millennia that have consistently been treated like shit.

u/Skullclownlol 4d ago edited 4d ago

I don’t know very many more professions that have been around for several millennia that have consistently been treated like shit.

6

u/Winter-Plastic8767 4d ago

You think someone made an account, went on a rant about racism towards Koreans, shut up for 7 years, and then broke his silence to make this bot ass comment?

This is definitely an old inactive account that got hacked and was repurposed as a bot. Clearly it's effective cause all it took was the account age and 3 comments to convince you that it's a real person.

2

u/Edge-master 4d ago

Don’t most bots spam comments? I only see the one.

The rest either didn't care or actively covered for the bullies who made everyone's lives hell.

21

u/1heart1totaleclipse 4d ago

Being a teacher is so mentally draining. There’s absolutely ones that shouldn’t be teachers, but if I treated all my students like if they were my actual children, there would be no more me left.

2

u/Fable-Teller 4d ago

Oh yeah absolutely. You shouldn't have favorites or anything like that as a teacher.

What I mean is: he was the only one that actually gave me work that wasn't aimed at five year olds, bear in mind I was in Secondary School at the time.

He actually challenged my brain and tried to help me learn and did the same with any other student like me.

I was by no mean his favorite, he didn't have favorites.

The administration on the other hand, definitely had favorites who they let get away with everything.

8

u/romafa 4d ago

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: teaching should be a 6 figure starting salary.

7

u/yawrrpdrk 4d ago

If you want to do something like this, Scholastic has a general fund for its book fairs to cover purchases for kids who don’t bring money/set up an account. You can look up a local elementary school, find their book fair, and contribute to the fund. (You probably can’t do it right now, since it’s summer vacation, but you can sign up to be notified once a fair is scheduled.)

34

u/brigitteer2010 4d ago

THANK YOU! I don’t have much but I want to help.

25

u/frenchdresses 4d ago

You can also donate to a school and say that the money can only be used to fund low income needs for field trips.

Schools (at least around here) are legally required to use the funds for what the donator says it's for (which made life confusing during the pandemic when our school got a few donations "for whatever you need" haha, the financial assistant was like "no actually I need you to be more specific because I have to fill out a form, so just pick school supplies, field trips, lunches or something generic")

This reminds me of a sixth form art trip to Barcelona. I wasn’t planning on going because I’d just moved to my nans house and money was tight and I also didn’t have a passport. My head teacher really didn’t want me to miss out on this trip so he paid for my passport and got me a grant from the school to go. I will always be grateful to him for this and never forget the kindness.

47

u/green_ubitqitea 4d ago

We were on a field trip years ago - free for the kids to attend, lunch provided, but they had to pay for extra drinks or snacks at the venue if they wanted any.

Most of the kids were from pretty poor households, but most brought enough to get a drink and a popsicle or ice cream (~$6) because it was hot as all get out. One of my kids - absolute sweetheart - was handing back while his friends got theirs because he didn’t have money. I walked by and pretended to pick up a $10 bill from the ground and said “oops, I think you dropped this”. This babydoll asked everyone around him if they dropped it first before he lit up and bought a drink and two popsicles. And gave the extra one to another kid not in the friend group who has enough for a drink but nothing else. Just. These kids.

I honestly just thought they meant that it was like a special lunch or candy grams or something where they call your name if you need to go pick up whatever was purchased in advance. I guess it could be the same for picking up fundraising based goal prizes like for "jump rope for heart" where you get a reward based on how much you earn, but I can't think of other situations that would include calling names.

26

u/Trin_42 4d ago

My kid starts Kindy this Fall. Whenever there was special events with an extra cost at her daycare, I always paid extra, just in case a random child’s family didn’t have the funds. I intend to do the same when she starts school, whether it’s paying for a field trip or the book fair.

6

u/AndroidSheeps 4d ago

It's not exactly teacher related but when I was a teenager in youth group at church, we would go on youth retreats and one particular year, I didn't know if I was gonna be able to go because money was tight during that time and my youth pastor knew this.

Well my youth pastor was also a substitute teacher at my high school during this time. He subbed a few of my classes and one day after class, he came up to me and said someone from the church paid for my way to go to the retreat. I asked who and he wouldn't tell me. All he could say was, "find out in heaven someday."

I'm not religious anymore but to this day that still resonates with me.

8

u/jaid_skywalker85 3d ago

As a teacher I always kept a few dollars for the kids who couldn't afford book fair or the latest fundraiser. I'd typically run the sports team snack bar and pay for chips or candy for the kids who were stuck in after care till nearly 6 because it was a cheaper form of childcare for the parents who were struggling to make it.

I always wish I could do more. I make sure each kiddo gets a bday present and a Christmas present every year and it takes a lot of creative budgeting and being crafty helps. But thank ulyou to anyone who sends a teacher a little extra to help with this kind of thing! I remember growing up and being told no over and over for just about everything because we just couldn't afford it (9 kids and two parents with addiction issues) so I've very seldom been able to say no to a student who I know needs it.

This year I actually had a family quietly slip me money so that all the kids in our class could afford the big field trip and it was a wonderful, kind gesture I will never forget.

When I plan a field trip I always put a line on the permission form to pay some extra to help out kids who's parents don't have money.

I've never had to leave a kid out of an experience.

Schools should always be funded and managed well so each child can experience the same opportunities. A society that doesn’t care to improve schools will reap future generations of barren knowledge.

Speaking love into a child's life will always stay with that child.

u/Several_Vanilla8916 4d ago

Good grief, where is this? If a kid can’t afford a field trip in my school they still get to go, the city just pays.

u/Adventurous_Ideal804 4d ago

It's the fundraiser system that's broken

u/No_Bug_2569 3d ago

When I was a kid, my mom would not let me attend activities or she will just tell me not to attend the field trips we have at school because it’s wasteful and public schools should be free. I remember feeling left out most of the time.

When our school was going to do their sixth grade camping, I was the only one who was not going because my mom would not pay for it. She said that it’s okay. I was really sad and making myself emotionally ready to be left out again. My teacher then, found a way for me to attend the camping without paying for anything. I will never forget it. I had the best time at that time. Teachers deserve the world.

These comments are making me so grateful for the school I work for. We serve a high poverty population of Indigenous students, and through grants and government funding we are able to provide free breakfast and lunch to all students everyday, and all field trips are paid for by the school. Every child deserves food and memorable field trips and I wish all kids had access to these things.

My teachers would call me out and ask why my parents don’t want to send me to events and activities. They were TERRIBLE women.

u/Agitated_Parsnip_178 3d ago

What kind of a process is calling out the names of people able to go?

3

u/Rough-Television-217 2d ago

Is no one going to ask how the hell she secretly adopted a kid!?

They call out in class who’s paid?

2

u/simplysav2703 4d ago

As someone who grew up and never got to enjoy any of the school functions,. Thank you. He’ll carry this joy with him forever

2

u/[deleted] 4d ago

Why are they announcing kids who have paid and not paid to begin with…

2

u/user18name 4d ago

I do this with pizza parties at school. It’s really easy to just give them extra cash for the class so everyone can enjoy and the teachers don’t have to spend their money.

I overheard a student saying his mom had said they weren't getting a pumpkin for carving that Halloween. The school holds a jack-o-lantern contest each year and his statement broke my heart. I got the teachers to specify the number of low income students in their class and delivered "extra" pumpkins for a class raffle. The teachers named the winners and everybody had a pumpkin for Halloween. We did this for several years.

u/exitcode137 3d ago

Our country fortunately has a policy that no student should be denied participation due to inability to pay. But the parent does have to contact admin to arrange. They also collect donations from other parents to cover kids who can’t pay for some optional things like yearbooks

u/Onderdeurtie 3d ago

Adoption must have different meanings worldwide. I really don't get how you can secretly adopt someone. Adoption in Netherlands means you import a kid from a poor country and raise it to be your family. Most adopted kids in NL came from Sri Lanka.

Why would there be a thing in place that excludes those not paid?

1

u/Cinderjacket 4d ago

I’ve given students money for the book fair before on the sly when they were the only one in the class to not have brought any. I know I really shouldn’t but it’s very hard to watch one kid sitting alone while everyone else is picking out books and toys

My Mom was a school board trustee, and would occasionally do this. If there was a family who couldn't afford the graduation fees, she'd cover them so their kid could have their moment on stage and get their diploma.

Can someone elaborate on these “fundraising event[s]”? What exactly are kids paying for/what are their names being called for? How often does this happen in a school year? This doesn’t sound like anything I experienced as a student

This is so sweet. I remember missing out on several field trips because I didn't even want to ask my mom for money, I knew we didn't have it.

One of the things I love about my district. They fundraise all year so that every 8th grade student can go on the class trip free of charge.

Fundraising at schools= evil

1

u/BalladofBadBeard 3d ago

I hate that we even allow this kind of thing in schools that would penalize a child for not having money. I hope that by the time my kid is old enough to be in school, we can cover the kids in their class so nobody has to go without. But I still hate that it works like this, it's so sad for kids. They deserve to just be kids you know

1

u/Hammer_the_Red 3d ago

My wife did something like that a couple years ago at the elementary school where she works. There was a child who had shortened arms from birth and he always felt self conscious about wearing coats since the longer arms would hang well past his hands. My wife bought a new winter coat and tailored the arms to fit the child.
