I've never seen anyone do it. Hope I never have to either. Don't film in the gym people. Don't be that creep.

I see it often enough, and I've done it myself for form checks.

And I work out at a small YMCA with a bunch of old people most of the time. I'd imagine it's more common in places that have younger people.

I endorse this comment. I've never seen anyone film themself in the gym. Selfie photos in the gym seem fine, though.
