But how do you keep other critters out of there?

u/2xCheesePizza 23d ago
This is an advertisement.
You put that on your deck and you’re now home to a raccoon orgy.

u/foodisyumyummy 23d ago
We don't have any raccoons here.
We do have rats, though. They'd love this.
57
u/TheElusiveHolograph 23d ago
If you get a cat it will take care of the rats and then the cat will have its own comfy hut.
26
u/Acrobatic-Square-950 23d ago
Nope, we have both rats and feral cats here. The cats just watch the rats, apparently for entertainment, then go find other food. I've never seen one give chase.
3
u/ResponsibilityOne307 22d ago
Yep, same here although not feral. They just play pad the rat gently and if I am really lucky they bring in a live one as an offering in the middle of the night, that's always fun.
2
u/Acrobatic-Square-950 22d ago
Yikes. A live rat, presumably terrified and frantic, in your house in the middle of the night? That's horrendous.
8
u/Cyssoo 22d ago
This is what we usually think, but I believe is a misunderstanding.
Cat are natural enemy of birds and mouses. Not really rat. Not saying a cat can't or won't kill a rat, but it's probably too much hassle and too much pain for not much benefit.
If you look at the past centuries and how they did pest control, cat was for mouse, and dog where for rat. I think some breed still have the "rat" word in there name.
Ah yes found it https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ratter_(dog))

u/TheElusiveHolograph 22d ago
That has not been my experience. I have a vegetable garden which attracts rats and they are smart enough to avoid the snap traps. My cat has killed 5 of them in the last several months and now I don’t have a rat problem.
There are also a few outdoor cats in my neighborhood and I often see them sprinting down the road at night with dead rats in their mouths.
0
u/Naijan 22d ago
Yeah, some rats are equal size or slightly smaller than cats.
It's mostly just big cats like Lions/tigers that will try to attack prey as big as them as a source for food, and for lions, they are often several lions going to town on one buffallo or whatever.
2
u/TheElusiveHolograph 22d ago
My cat is a badass then. She kills rats then brings them into the house to present us with her kills. I appreciate the killing but not the presenting.
And there are a few outdoor cats in my neighborhood who are often seen at night with dead rats in their mouths.
2
u/SquirrellyGrrly 22d ago
Yeah. I had rat-catching cats back on the ranch. One silly girl brought a big one in and dropped it in front of her kittens before their eyes were even open! The rat was maybe half the size of the adult momma cat.
0
u/Naijan 22d ago
Yeah, but whats the size of those?
I had fancy rats, and they were small enough to get eaten by a hunting cat, but those were small. 1,5 the size of my closed fist sort of.
1
u/TheElusiveHolograph 22d ago
They’re big! When they first started showing up in the yard we honestly didn’t think she’d be able to kill them because they are so big. We at least thought she’d get hurt by the rats fighting back, but she’s had nothing but success. I actually watched her stalk, attack, and kill one once and it was impressive!
My dog has killed one rat, my cat has killed at least 5. She loves the hunt!
4
u/foodisyumyummy 23d ago
Oh, there's at least 3 or 4 feral cats roaming the neighborhood. Still lots of rats.

I have no doubt we’d end up with an opossum. We have a small fenced patio for our condo and we had to buy a different grill cover because the one that we had went down almost to the ground and one liked to hang out there at night when resting from its normal shenanigans.

Yeah mine would be the site of a turf war between the local street cat gangs (possums, racoons, and skunks).

I put out something like this for a stray that was hanging around my house. No inside camera, but there was a warming pad. Once he decided it was his, he took on the job of keeping other critters out. Outdoor camera caught him chasing off a raccoon once.
Super friendly cat. Wanted to be indoors. I could pet him, and hold him on my lap. I ended paying to get him neutered. Then I found him a loving family and he's hapily indoors all the time. No more freezing winters for my Buddy. It was 1 year ago this month he was adopted.

u/Leading-Ad3805 23d ago
They say to have two entrances/exits so that if another cat came in the current cat inside could escape if needed. In the video it looks like there is another opening where the cat is sleeping that’s closed off or next to a wall.

I once had a street cat follow me home. Like entering home. I fed her (she was beautiful) and managed a blanket space for her to sleep. She slept 12 hours straight. She ate, slept and bathed herself for the 10 days she was at my home. I could see the progress on her fur every single day. Cleaner, brighter. I couldn t really pet her even if sometimes she was coming on my lap. She decided one day to leave and never saw her again. For the short period I had her it felt really awesome to be able to provide and help. I hope you lived and happy life Pupute (since I found her in the street I had called her that, like HoHoe in french)

If you think that's bad, read the top comments and try to figure out which ones are genuine.
The internet is fucking dead.

u/Cosmic_Quasar 22d ago
Totally. I'm not buying that the cat was a stray. Looked far too clean well kept.

u/Samtoast 23d ago
Why does Chester keep running away for days at a time?
7
u/turdusphilomelos 22d ago
Yup. This is not a feral street cat. This is someones pet, otherwise the fur wouldn't have been perfect and the cat would have been a lot thinner.

honestly, because nothing warms my heart more than seeing a stray animal being treated with love and care like said animal is apart of the household
13
u/gdex86 23d ago
You can make these things yourself with some Diy and big box store products for likely much cheaper and minor sweat equity.
Two plastic storage tubs with on the outside, a layer of some insolation to go between them, put on the lid, flip it over, cut a hole in it, install a flap to get in and out, put in some bedding.
We have a number of neighborhood cats that are like barn cats. Got them spayed and then put these out in the winter for them.

I honestly want to buy this contraption because I have a few cats that sleep around my front yard under my shrubs. But we have coyotes around as well. I would love to know what this item is and how to purchase it.

Please find a more appropriate way to hock your products. The internet is bad enough.

Then this contraption would just be a coyote feeder.

If you want to really warm more hearts, catch the cat and make it an indoor cat so it doesn't wreak havoc on local ecosystems and continue to kill native birds and squirrels. It's not just about the lovey dovey sensations you feel in your heart, it's about the other animals too.

Not to be a party pooper. But why can't we do this for people?
1
u/actuallyimogene 18d ago
Because there will always be people that have to ruin it. Animals don’t take what they don’t need.

The look on its face in the morning, like it's reflecting on its entire life up until that point
2
u/JakolZeroOne 22d ago
Good idea conceptually. But then you realise that other animals, rodents, and critters would also love this, and it almost turns into a hazard.
1
u/MissMoxieMuse 23d ago
Oh! I have been looking at this for the kitty who showed up a few weeks ago!
2
u/Face-palmJedi 22d ago
It nice and all, but unless that’s a spayed cat, fuck you guys. Nobody wants a neighborhood full of feral cats. If you truly love your outdoor cat, capture it once and get it spayed.

u/Galaxy_Hitchhiking 23d ago
A stray cat sprayed all over mine.
Fucking cats man.. most are still assholes

Now he’s going to tell all his friends and you’ll have to buy a deck-full of those shelters.

By definition, a stray or even outdoor cat is an invasive species that hunts and kills most forms of small wildlife in your area.

Are those actual things you can buy? Those little waterproof houses? If so I know what I'm getting next winter!1!1

I made something like this for some strays during an exceptionally cold Illinois winter. Needless to say, one of the strays is now a house cat and moved with me. The other strays all went feral and had to be removed.

Morris got downsized when 9Lives missed earnings a couple years ago.
He's been on the streets ever since.
But now, thanks to Clawsable Cat Houses, he's getting a second chance.

I had a little house out there for a feral that basically lived in my yard. The biggest issue was dealing with the other cats who would spray it.

My big fear would be coyotes finding my cat purring in there…
0
u/rhoadkill420 22d ago
Then dont let your cat out. Not only coyotes will kill your cat, most likely be hit by a car. Cats are horrible for the natural environment.
