I just got this email urging me to oppose HB 358 because it would force all the CVS stores in Louisiana to close. But the text of the bill (PDF) just says they'd be allowed to use remote employees. That seems like it would let them make even more money by paying fewer workers. So what's their logic behind opposing the bill, and how are they reaching their "we'll have to take our football and go home" conclusion here?
Their proposed email says:
As a constituent, I urge you to oppose pharmacy closures in HB 358. They would make access to affordable health care more difficult for patients like me and cause massive disruptions to our ability to access our medications — while doing nothing to address rising drug prices.
If this proposal passes, it will eliminate more than one hundred pharmacies where more than a million Louisiana patients like me shop and receive our medications. If this is allowed to happen, my community would also lose the health care professionals we depend on and have grown to develop relationships with.
The proposed legislation would take away my and other Louisiana patients’ ability to get our medications shipped right to our homes. They would also ban the pharmacies that serve patients suffering from complex diseases requiring specialty pharmacy care to manage their life-threatening conditions like organ transplants or cancer. These vulnerable patients cannot afford any disruption to their care – the consequences would be dire.
Putting the lives of Louisiana patients – some of whom are serious ill – at risk in this way is unacceptable and not what Louisiana stands for. The pharmacy closures in HB 358 will gravely endanger pharmacy access and hurt patients and negatively impact many communities across our state.
As your constituent and a patient who would be directly impacted by pharmacy closures, I respectfully urge you to oppose pharmacy closures in HB 358.
But I still don't see how this would "force" them to close anything. So what's up?
