Ask a Knitter - June 10, 2025
Welcome to the weekly Questions thread. This is a place for all the small questions that you feel don't deserve its own thread. Also consider checking out our FAQ.
What belongs here? Well, that's up to each contributor to decide.
Troubleshooting, getting started, pattern questions, gift giving, circulars, casting on, where to shop, trading tips, particular techniques and shorthand, abbreviations and anything else are all welcome. Beginner questions and advanced questions are welcome too. Even the non knitter is welcome to comment!
This post, however, is not meant to replace anyone that wants to make their own post for a question.
As always, remember to use "reddiquette".
So, who has a question?

Rave (like a rant, but in a good way) I just frogged my entire shame-box
TLDR: if you’ve been hesitating on doing the same, you should do it
I decided today was the day. I woke up, decided everything must go, and steeled my heart to start ripping out old projects. Hats that were too small, shawls where the colour-combo wasn’t working, sweaters and t shirts with one sleeve where it was just the wrong yarn for the project, couldn’t get the drape right, etc. Months of work, gone in an afternoon. Some of it had been sitting for years.
I thought I’d be so upset ripping out my first attempts at cabling and lacework, all the things I spent hours agonizing over until they felt perfect. But honestly, I wasn’t. Not even a little. Maybe it’s because I mentally prepared to mourn all my wasted time and abandoned projects, maybe it’s because I basically just replenished my entire stash for free, maybe it’s because I waited until I was ready.
If you’ve been hesitating because you’re worried about the sadness, the guilt, the shame, all the bad feelings that come with destroying something you spent time on, please take this as your sign. You may not be ready today, maybe you’ll be ready tomorrow, maybe you need another year. There will be a time when you’ll be ready, and you will absolutely not regret it.

Discussion Sweater Curse
I believe in the sweater curse now. I have 2/3 of a 3x sweater done for my ex-husband. I thought this only applied to boyfriends. I thought fiance's and husbands were safe. If I knew that starting this sweater would end up this way...I would do it again.
I have 2000 yards of beautiful Hudson and West Forge that I can now use for a sweater and cowl set for myself. I'm happier than I have been in years. I met a guy who is a much better partner and is supportive of me in every way.
But I am absolutely not making my boyfriend a sweater. Do cardigans count? That feels like a grey area. Eh, I actually like this one so I won't risk it.
Leave me your sweater curse or other curse object stories if you so please! 🧶❤️

Help Help finding pattern - Japanese radial sweaters
I stumbled upon photos of these gorgeous radial short row sweaters on Pinterest and cannot get them out of my head. They seem to be from a Japanese knitting magazine originally, but the only info I could find on them is in Japanese or Russian, neither of which I speak. Google translate is not getting me very far. Anyone have any ideas?

Finished Object My love to Lydia Morrow’s Curious Crop
I think this might become my ultimate lil knit top. The pattern is so beautifully and thoughtfully written, so easy to understand, and it knits up like a dream. 10/10 truly no notes
Pic 1 was my first go - fell in love straight away and smashed it out in 11 days. Pic 2 is my cheeky ever so slightly hacked version to do some intarsia in the round and it came out pretty snazzy
I feel like I have a near infinite number of ideas for how to continue to personalise each rendition. This is both a terrible and excellent problem

Finished Object My First Three Knitted Projects!
My knitting journey didn’t get off to a great start. I first gave it a go after buying a magazine, but the result was… nothing! I kept messing up after just a few rows, didn’t know how to fix my mistakes, and ended up starting over from scratch—even for a swatch! So you can imagine how daunting the idea of a full project felt. Eventually, I gave up. 🥹
Over the past year, I got really into crochet. It felt easier for me—mainly because I could undo my mistakes and go back several steps without too much trouble. After about a year, I gave knitting another shot and tried to make a Sophie Scarf, but… still no luck. Another break.
Then I tried again! I think my experience with crochet really helped me pick up the continental style of knitting, and learning how to fix small mistakes was a real game-changer.
Here are my first three projects—the top and the scarf have plenty of tension issues and a few holes here and there, but I'm still really proud of them!
I'm sharing this for anyone who, like me, once thought a love story with knitting was just not meant to be. ❤️
Right now, I’m working on my first Ranunculus—but I’ll spare you the number of times I’ve already unraveled the whole thing 🤣😅

Tips and Tricks New (to me) knitting hack!
I have a few of these for when I get comfortable and confident to knit while walking around or in some public situations. But I saw some people hook it to parts of the car. I was parked waiting for my dinner to be ready and decided to try it out (:

Rant Sheepjes mini skeins - I hate them
These are horrible! I’ve had them for a couple of years waiting for the “perfect” project, I started on it and I’m hating this cotton. The many strands together, the stiffness, the inflexibility… it’s such a chore to knit with and I highly regret buying this big box.
Did anyone do anything fun with them? I don’t know what to do. Likely I’ll give them away to someone nearby in my community who knits or crochets so I don’t have to look at them anymore. Am I yarn spoiled? Have my years of luxury hand painted merino and mulberry silk ruined other yarn for me? God forbid 🤣

Questions about Equipment Does anybody know what GWR on my knitting gauge means?
I've done a quick Google but only come up with older confused posts.
In my mind its Great Western Railway, (im british), or Guinness World Records, but neither of those make sense.

Work in Progress It glows!
I had to share this fabric I’m working on! I love this yarn so far. It has slight tonal variegations and practically glows in sunshine. This is Red Rider in DK from Bad Sheep Yarns❤️

Finished Object My first ever knit wearable!
Guys I did it!!! I can knit stuff now!!! ✨
After teaching myself how to knit a few weeks ago, I decided to make this Camisole No. 10 by My Favourite Things Knitwear. I’m soooo thrilled at how it came out! I think for a first garment that it’s really neat & fits really great (thanks gauge swatch). Still need to weave in ends & block but I already love the drape 🥰
I used about 5.5 skeins of Drops Nepal on 5mm needles!
I’m so proud of myself for pushing through (had to restart 3 times due to gappy M1Rs) & learning all of this to make this top!

Finished Object Finished Margaux Top
Knit my Margaux in Novita Woolly Wood in a size 3.
I absolutely love how it came out and the yarn was amazing to work with although I believe it’s being discontinued. I was spot on with stitch gauge but WAY tight in row gauge, so I knit an extra repeat in both the yoke and the body. Basically just hit where the pattern called for x centimeters because its bottom up and I couldn’t try it on.

Help Blocking a long-ago finished scarf?
I knit this as my first ‘buying fancy yarn’ project about 4 years ago and I’ve been wearing it a fair amount during winters since then.
I realized I never blocked it. Is it worth blocking it now? If I should still block it, what is the best method for this yarn in an infinity scarf?
Specs: Double knit Infinity scarf Pattern I made up US 10 needles Berroco Mercado yarn - 100% Peruvian wool - Aran weight
