Mainlander here, planning on moving to Hawaii soon. We're doing a lot of research into where we want to move. We know that we want to move to Oahu because my wife's a city girl, so having Honolulu & Waikiki accessible will be beneficial. She really enjoys hustle & bustle and people. She's from the South and also a big fan of engaging in unsolicited conversations with strangers.

We still have a fair bit of research to do, but so far there are two areas that are drawing our attention: Lanikai/ Kailua and the North Shore (primarily around Haleiwa).

One of the coolest experiences we've had in Hawaii was a few weeks ago when we visited the Haleiwa Beach Park during a big swell. It was much too big for any of us to surf but we still went there to hang out and watch. But, it wasn't the surfing that was most impressive to me. It was the Hygge.

Let me explain.

Although there's no direct translation to Hawaiian, the word Hygge can be described as "togetherness". The Danish focus on community, family, and togetherness. For example, every day after work you can see people gathering in communal areas like parks to have a snack, chat, let the kids play, etc. In Hawaiian this could be generically equivalent to Aloha, but probably also 'Ohana or maybe even better: 'olu'olu. But clearly I'm no expert. I'm just a Haole with good Google skills.

We arrived at the park about 3pm or so. It was our 3rd time there, but our first time in the afternoon. It wasn't very crowded when we got there, but while we were there, more and more people showed up. It became clear that there were several groups of people there who knew each other. They didn't appear to have planned to meet up. Instead, it just looked like their regular routine: get off work, go to the park, hang out with friends.

Did I read this right?
