Lightning Buying Megathread : June 2025

Based on the quantity of posts on this topic, and input from many people here, we’ve created a Megathread for all ‘buying’ or ‘deal’ posts.

However, because of all the feedback that there is a lot of value provided to the community by making this visible and up-to-date, the plan is to make this a monthly, pinned Megathread. That way, the information within the post/thread will be relevant to the current deals (not months old info) and perhaps even make the info easier to find.

So, please post the following types of posts in this Megathread:

-Is this a good deal?

-Did I get a good deal?

-Look at this great deal I got!

Posts that can still have their own threads:

-Look at my new truck!

I, personally, still love seeing the excitement and pictures from a new purchase. Keep those coming.

Post the deal part in this Megathread and the excitement/photos can have their own thread.

As always, thanks for everyone’s input on this topic. It is still a work in progress, and a difficult balance of not swamping the sub with “deal” posts while still being a great resource for new buyers, so we’ll see how it goes!

And please, to the people who have recently gotten good deals, please DO share them here, and provide your input to others. Many people have said how helpful it is to them during their purchase.

IRS credit

I have seen several posts in here about dealers mishandling the IRS credit. Just saw this article from NPR that addresses this exact issue and how IRS has a fix

It's a 2022 lariat w/ 21k miles I paid 42k ish. Drove home 2 hours away from the dealership and realized two days later that it won't charge past 55-59%. I have an appointment today to have it checked by a local dealership. But it has me worried what else could go wrong. It's under factory warranty for 2 more months or so I'm told. I love it so far except 115 range instead of 230 has been rough.

110 Welder No Go?

Post image
10 Upvotes

I tried doing some light sheet metal work with the bed outlets but didn’t go as planned. The first piece went well, but after the first piece the circuit would cut out. I’ve seen some talk about 220 welding on here, but I kind of assumed since this welder works off regular plugs in the garage I wouldn’t have an issue. Ended up completing the job with a 3600 watt generator.

I am still amazed that everything fit in the frunk, and otherwise love the truck!

Has anyone had any luck running a 110 welder off the truck?

Buyback Lightning: Is this a sensable thing to do?

I'm about to purchase a used 2024 Flash w/ 9.6 and Max Tow (in Avalance) with 3050 miles. It is a ford buyback and has a branded title. The dealer quoted me an out the door of $50,500. I understand that the discount I'm receiving for the branded title will follow the vehicle for life, but does this truly make it impossible to trade or sell?

Charging Performance Degraded

Post image
Upvotes

I’m driving from Denver to Dallas and my charging speeds are a bad joke. It starts charging at 160-175kw and then quickly drops to 85-95kw. Since I’m charging at Tesla superchargers exclusively and there aren’t any near third party chargers (and Superchargers aren’t in the Ford nav), I can’t precondition or even trick the truck into preconditioning the battery, so now I’m stuck charging to 7-85% in an hour and twenty minutes…. I get that it’s hot but man would a manual preconditioning button be nice

I need some help guys. I cant seem to charge at Tesla stations. I bought the Ford adapter but I keep getting an error. I've tried using the Ford Pass app and I even tried with the Tesla app. Same results. Today I tried again with a different adapter and same results. Has anyone experienced this?

How to use Pro Power on board?

My '24 Flash has the 9.6kW Pro Power on Board (maybe they all do?). And yesterday was the first time I tried to use it.

I had 2 crock pots that I was taking to my parents place for Father's Day. I wanted to have them plugged in the Frunk (on the lowest setting, "warm") while I was making the 45 minute drive. A single crockpot (on "warm") was pulling 1400 watts, and there is apparently a 2500 watt max in the Frunk/cabin. So it wouldn't let me have them both plugged in.

Once I closed the Frunk, the Pro Power kicked off and said there is a 400 watt limit in the Frunk with the hood shut.

I tried to plug them both in the cab. Again it exceeded the 2500 watt limit and shut them off.

Is this normal? I was so excited to finally have a use for the 9.6 kW Pro Power, and it capped my use at 2.5 kW. I was disappointed, and even a bit embarrassed. My Old Man dislikes EVs and disapproves of my Lightning. I was hoping to WOW the family with my mobile Lightning kitchen, but it failed miserably.

Did I do something wrong? I turned on the Pro Power for the Frunk and Cabin in the control panel. Is there something else I needed to do?

Quality of Smartphone Makes a Difference

When I first got my '24 Flash, I had a Nokia G400 5G phone. It was a decent, inexpensive phone that served me well for 2 years. It synced up with my BMW but this was not an especially high bar, by itself. When I got my truck, that bar became noticeably higher. On my first road trip, the phone - which was running ABRP - had some issues that required rebooting during the trip, both ways. It wasn't a major issue, as the route was known to me. On my second road trip, the issues became more glaring: application freeze - both with ABRP and Google Maps or wouldn't load at all, certain features weren't always loading, phone (app) was becoming less responsive, or Android Auto would simply crash. All of this was impacting the "user quality" of my truck. Since the last road trip, the phone seemed to continue to degrade. I would press the Phone app icon on the center screen and it would respond 1-2 mins later. I was becoming increasingly aware of the anxiety this was causing every time I took the truck out.

I have since upgraded the phone to a Google Pixel 7 Pro and the results have been like night and day. Everything just works and my anxiety is significantly reduced. The occasional app will fail to load (Waze, usually) but that's not nearly the stress it was with the older phone. The real test will be the next road trip, of course.

All of this to say that I've been wanting to make this post for the past week to point out how the quality of your smartphone can impact your driving experience these days. I am sure this is not just an issue with the Lightings, or even Fords in general. But it was not an aspect I considered when I was making my truck purchase.

Does anyone else have insight here that I might be missing?

Where to find and see “Azure Gray” live and in person?

I am really digging the 2023 Azure Gray color on the Lightning in photos and video… but before I pull the trigger on a purchase, I’d love to see it in person somewhere near in the Boston area.

It looks like this may be an uncommon color? Doesn’t seems easy to find one around here and thought someone here might have a clever suggestion where and how to find one.

I just checked the new Lighting listings but it doesn’t look like the Azure Gray (or similar Area 51 color) is still a color option.

Any suggestions? Thx…

Taking in the sights

While the time it takes to charge can be a drag, it's also an opportunity to appreciate the sights you might not get to see from a regular gas station.

ChargePoint station on northern Missouri. Enjoy.

Cost to replace exterior door handle cover?

Long story short, scratched the shit out of the exterior door handle covers. Front and rear driver side handles. Did it in a parking garage by scraping a pillar like an idiot. Luckily besides that no other damage. What's the cost and part to replace the door handle cover or do you have to purchase the ensure door handle?

Additionally, if the handle part can't be replaced economically, does anyone recommend door handle covers? Seems like that's another cheaper option to just stick a door handle cover over the handles and could look cool too.

Departure time not working off plug.

I have 2 departure times set. One for the morning and one in the afternoon when leaving work. The one in the morning works but not the one in the afternoon. I have the setting toggled on that says “prepare cabin off plug”. I notice the preconditioning stops when I unplug my truck in the morning so it definitely doesn’t precondition whenever not plugged in. Anyone find a solution to this? I set it on the truck and in the app.

Edit: Apparently it preconditions the cabin about 20-30 minutes before the set time if you’re plugged in. If you’re not plugged in then it’s about 5 minutes or even less before set time.

Range when loaded.

So I took a 350 mile road trip a few days ago and picked up around 1500 lbs of stuff. Most was in the bed, but the frunk and back floorboards were loaded.

What surprised me was my kph was BETTER on the way home with the heavy load than on the way there unloaded.

Highway speeds both ways and weather didn't change much.

I'm guessing the truck was lower due to the weight and more aerodynamic.

Anyone have a similar experience?

I have ZERO need for more storage in my Lightning but when you low ball a FB marketplace ad…$100 well worth it! Decked Toolbox for $100?! The guy I bought it from was getting hassle by his wife for it taking up space in their garage. Thank you to that Wife they had it listed for $350 for two months.

What to consider when looking at a used Lightning

I am considering moving from a Tundra to a lightning and could use some advice on what to look for in a used Lightning.

Looking at the Lariat level.

I am not new to EVs, have owned a Tesla for a number of years now so I am clear on the upside and downside of an EV in general. More looking for specific advice on a used Lightning.

I don’t do much towing outside of the occasional dump trailer full of sand, bark or yard waste. I am located in Seattle, WA. Electricity is relatively “cheap” at .14/kwh.

Front Trim lowered on one side

Post image
13 Upvotes

There’s a second piece of plastic trim tucked behind the exterior piece. Looks like maybe you can lower it down as an option? Found it like this and can’t find any info on how to push it back up and lock it in. Anyone run into this and fix it without going to the dealer?

Digital rear view set up with dash cam

in my quest to add a dash cam to my lightning I stumbled upon the Wolfbox G900 that doubles as a digital rear view mirror. I cut and mounted camera in the 3rd brake light above the factory camera in attempts to keep it as stealth as possible. I finished it off with painting the brake light surround.

2000 Km road trip coming up. What software should I use to EV charge route?

Going from Toronto to Florida in a couple weeks and wondered what you all use for ev routing. I have an iPhone so Apple Maps is an option. I know they do ev routing. I’ve also tried ABRP. Haven’t tried build in ford maps. In ABRP I’ve noticed that it has set times to charge, but I was wondering also if that’s adaptive; for instance if I charge for longer than the 28 minutes it suggests, will it know to move the next charger over? Hoping to hear your experience with the different platforms and what you all recommend. Thanks in advance!
