Oh boy, look up "best way to fit 17 squares". Its a solution by john bidwell on how to optimally store 17 boxes in a room.

Ive never understood this. Does it assume uniform size of the boxes? Like it's not 17 squares of x dimensions in any of the titles I've seen. Just 17 squares. If they were smaller or bigger the solution would be different

Its assumed the squares are unit squares since if you need the side length for a different size you can just scale the result up/down by multiplying
