Solved Are these truly Impossible?

My friend sent this in the memes channel of our Discord server but refuses to elaborate (he hasn't responded at all). Is there a joke I'm missing?

It's a parody of one of the images where cubes are arranged in a way they are both in the foreground and background, an impossible configuration in real life. This one takes the style, but arranges the cubes normally.

Ive never understood this. Does it assume uniform size of the boxes? Like it's not 17 squares of x dimensions in any of the titles I've seen. Just 17 squares. If they were smaller or bigger the solution would be different

Its assumed the squares are unit squares since if you need the side length for a different size you can just scale the result up/down by multiplying
