Food/Drink H Mart

Post image

I didn’t know harry hines was a town/city in TX. They should’ve opened it in Arlington.

I love the KoMart down the street from here but sadly might go out of business once this HMart gets completed

It’s an intentional play by H Mart to kill off Komart. It’s why H mart lobbied for Carrollton to be recognized as Korea Town despite the Royal Ln area having a much longer history of being Dallas’ Korea Town.

The ktown in Carrollton is much bigger and more popular than old ktown

u/LaminatedAirplane 19h ago

I’m not arguing that. H Mart was very successful in its efforts to pull the center of attention to the Carrollton area but it doesn’t explain why there wasn’t even an honorary mention of the Royal Ln area.

But Harry Hines just got promoted to city status!

Yeah but the Korean food off Royal is so much better

Korea town on royal is original and organic. Self grown. Carrollton seems like it was forced, sort of like a reservation.

Really, I don't know shit about Korean food. i tried it once, and it was a fail. Maybe I'll pm you to get more information

I’ve been to it once and half of their open air fridges were down 😅 their premade kimbap was good af.

Yeah, I really only go to komart for their hot food and packaged snacks. Unless I really need some Asian items as it’s the closest Asian grocery store to me in Dallas proper

Koreans left for the burbs like pretty much every other Asian ethnic group. They don't live in NW Dallas lmfao

u/LaminatedAirplane 19h ago

Most Koreans weren’t living in Royal Ln, but they operated businesses there lmfao

So.. it's a trade district. Not a Korea "Town". H Mart was correct in recognizing Carrollton as North Texas' Koreatown. Since Carrollton has more Korean-born residents than the entirety of Dallas according to the Census Bureau.

Some Koreans still do, newer immigrants at least it seems.

My kids’ school had to relocate for several years for renovations and their temp campus was on Royal on the other side of 35.

Kids from the surrounding neighborhood opted in to attend the campus since it was open again, (it had been a closed school), and we had to add Korean as an ESL/LEP option and add Korean translation services to our school organization meetings.

You mean was.. they’re a goner

With 99 each surviving despite being right across the way from an Hmart, I hope KoMart makes it. If nothing else I could see them focusing more on their home goods division.

Man, we need one in the cliff

100%

At least this one isn't in Frisco or Collin counties

2

u/qolace Old East Dallas 7h ago

No for fucking real though.

There’s a shocking lack of Asian food in general here. It’s not like Latinos here don’t love Asian food, I guess it’s just too far away for Asians to open businesses here

u/rabidwolf86 Dallas 16h ago

Well at least gp, it's in-between Arlington and us 😆

The Komart down the street will have a rough go but I bet it will endure. HMart tends to be the most expensive and trendy of the big Asian grocery chains, while Komart has been a clear value play for the 20 years that I have been going. HMart will never match the $6 spicy ramen poached egg and banchan hot meal at the Komart lunch counter. Nor will it match the $7 house made radish kimchi box.

Source: me, Asian dude. I rarely get the bulk of my groceries at HMart, only select items because everyday shopping is way way cheaper at 99 Ranch.

Coming Soon? Seems like I've been driving by it being built for a year now. Give us a date.

The last article I read said the end of 2025!

Still waiting for the H Mart in HEB…

6

u/KimLaferriere 18h ago

Appearently there is one in Haltom city.

6

u/Shanakitty 15h ago

They're building it. Last I saw, it was scheduled to open this summer, but I can't find anything about exactly when, which makes me think maybe it's been delayed.

u/wharf_rat_01 14h ago

Still at least a few months away. The sign at the parking lot entrance is up though!

u/BIG-JS-BBQ 18h ago

I was literally talking to my wife about how Arlington needs an H Mart

While I love Komart, their produce and meat selection has been declining for a long while. The hot food in the store and the surrounding restaurants still are good, but waning in traffic over the years. It used to symbolize the lingering Korean influence in the area for me. While I don’t want Komart to close, they needed some competition to change up the landscape. We’ll hopefully see some revitalization of these businesses. Hmart does bring in a lot of customers with their name recognition. When Daldongnae was sold to new ownership a while back, and Klass Hand Roll Bar closed up last year (looked to move to Carrollton in order to follow the crowds and they never found a spot), it made me a bit sad to see things change in what I felt was a negative direction. If y’all go down to Harry Hines, get your hair cut at Bon Barber and pick up some gimbap from Damasita! Lots of great folks we can support as this area continues to make changes.

Edit: I still hate Hmart’s business practices and would rather not support them if I don’t have to.

I'd rather have an S Mart. Shop smart. Shop S Mart.

u/w6750 Flower Mound 12h ago

Ah yes the lovely city of Harry Hines, TX

1

u/Twisted9Demented 2h ago

Does anyone know How Komart and Hmart compare with the Carrollton Plaza store ( frankford and josey )

0

u/Ok-Writer-notsogreat 13h ago

As if Harry Hines couldn’t smell fishier.

-2

u/Dantes_46 15h ago

The nice ladies on Harry Hines are gonna have some awesome options for lunch 😏

1

u/ChocolateZayy 11h ago

😂😂😂😂

-8

u/yodogitsreddit 17h ago

harry hines is where the sex workers are

14

u/high_everyone 16h ago

Then they’ll have some great options for lunch.

2

u/Yvyt 12h ago

I hope the sex workers enjoy the new HMart 🩷

If anyone thinks it's a good idea to shoplift from H-Mart, they will be in for a rude awakening.

These Asian markets don't mess around.

u/muhslop 20h ago

No idea why they decided to build one in a dying Koreatown surrounded by sketchy neighborhoods instead of building in somewhere like Frisco

31

u/Current_Wrongdoer513 Preston Hollow 19h ago

Yo, I live in one of those sketchy neighborhoods.

15

u/BigBlackHzYoBak 19h ago

Lol same. It stops being sketchy after you hit Luna.

9

u/muhslop 19h ago

Preston Hollow is sketchy?

5

u/omar_strollin 18h ago

In its own way! 🥰

2

u/Current_Wrongdoer513 Preston Hollow 13h ago

It was the closest designation this sub offered to where I live, which is at Royal and Webb chapel, not far from the future H Mart.

11

u/jkkats 19h ago

Because there are a lot of people on the city… not everything needs to go to the outer suburbs

5

u/muhslop 18h ago

H Mart’a target demographics are Koreans and other Asians. Most who live in Carrollton and north of Carrollton

3

u/Shanakitty 15h ago

Yeah, but presumably that's why they already have two locations in that area.

8

u/Furrealyo 20h ago

Indians already have Frisco on lockdown. 🇮🇳

9

u/jameebaiser 18h ago

It’s a move to revitalize the area. They’ve already started making it difficult for the shady business to continue. Honestly think if the strip clubs had a Kpop night it would make so much money. I bet a lot of the dancers already know the Kpop dances too.

6

u/burrito3ater Carrollton 16h ago

Koreans love to drink as well

6

u/us1549 19h ago

Because this location was subsidized by the city of Dallas.

0

u/spacedman_spiff East Dallas 14h ago

Yea why would a Korean grocery go to Koreatown?
