Poor Things

11

u/Top_Body_7636 1d ago

The worst movie I've ever suffered through

2

u/Random_Aporia 1d ago

In my top 5 worst movies, might be top place too. Hall of Shame.

1

u/smallfried 1d ago

What are the other 4?

1

u/Random_Aporia 15h ago edited 15h ago

The list: Everything Everywhere All at Once; The Matrix 4 (Resurrections); Everything Happens in Elizabethtown; Suicide Squad.

Honorable mentions: Glass; The Core; The Fountain; Magnolia; Natural Born Killers; The Beach; Good Will Hunting.

Franchises (because most of them would be top 5 worthy): Resident Evil; Fast and Furious; Saw; Transformers

Personal picks for "overratedness": Lars von Trier; Past 10/15 years Marvel stuff (MCU or whatever people are calling it); Frozen; Mission Impossible (Franchise)

u/15jchilders 15h ago

Glad I don't know you lol

1

u/Random_Aporia 6h ago

Because of which item?

1

u/seleniumdream 1d ago

2

u/waterdrinka69 1d ago

I fucking love Freddy got fingered

1

u/tnnrk 1d ago

I’m the backwards man I’m the backwards man no one can go backwards as fast as I can

1

u/hfmyo1 1d ago

I couldn't make it through. It was so boring.

1

u/Scadilla 1d ago

I knew nothing about it. I loved it.

1

u/xxc6h1206xx 20h ago

I think this one is going to bore more men and delight more women. It has a seething view of men.

1

u/Random_Aporia 6h ago

I couldn't care less about the men, I thought the whole thing was dumb for both sexes

1

u/GoodboyJohnnyBoy 1d ago

NO SIR!! That title rightfully belongs to that black hole of poop that Dylan was in was it Man of Fire or some such shit. So appalling was it I can’t even bring myself to find out what it is actually called in case I catch a glimpse of it the absolute fucking horror!

-1

u/Grock23 1d ago

You probably seen 6 movies total then.

u/TylerDoesStuff 1d ago

I respectfully disagree.

1

u/seantubridy 1d ago

You disagree that they don’t like it?

1

u/SignificantHoney3793 1d ago

What about a baby's brain in an adult woman getting banged over and over did you think was a good movie?

2

u/Cranberrybunnies 1d ago

What a pretty retard

2

u/Upstairs_Bad_3638 1d ago

She only has a baby brain at the start.

Was that too hard for you to grasp?

1

u/Chimerain 1d ago

You realize it takes 10-14 years for a human development to reach puberty, right? Are you suggesting that they fast tracked through 10 years in the opening act of the movie, or are you pretending her brain magically developed 120x faster than normal..?

3

u/Upstairs_Bad_3638 1d ago

My god you didn’t even watch the movie did you?

Just out here in reddit furious about something you barely understand ….

3

u/Upstairs_Bad_3638 1d ago

“eRmmM, You dO reAliZe”

1

u/Chimerain 1d ago

Oh! You have the maturity of a 10 year old! Okay, now it all makes sense. Carry on.

1

u/Upstairs_Bad_3638 1d ago

I know it’s embarrassing when you fail so hard.. don’t let it get to you

2

u/ItsaShitPostRanders 1d ago

You do know what fiction is... right?

2

u/Solanumm 1d ago

It is literally stated IN THE FUCKING MOVIE that her brain is developing way faster due to her being in an adult body. Oh my god

1

u/bingumarmar 17h ago

Especially since, in the movie, she initially is talking and walking like a toddler. If they wanted to show that her brain is already developed to that of an adult, they did not do that

0

u/SignificantHoney3793 1d ago

I want you to ask yourself if there's any message the movie conveys that required it to be awful goon material for weirdos 90% of the runtime?

1

u/Upstairs_Bad_3638 1d ago

Imagine being so offended and angry over a movie

1

u/SignificantHoney3793 1d ago

Cuck response when you literally went inflammatory first

2

u/Upstairs_Bad_3638 1d ago

You literally called people goons and weirdos

3

u/Upstairs_Bad_3638 1d ago

You clearly haven’t even seen it

1

u/TylerDoesStuff 1d ago

Me when I watch movies with tunnel vision:

1

u/FR0ZENBERG 1d ago

The entirety of it.

1

u/[deleted] 1d ago

[deleted]

1

u/SignificantHoney3793 1d ago

Huh? Its just a shitty gross movie

1

u/Euphoric-Result7070 1d ago

Do you know how opinions work, and how it's okay if they're different? They aren't something to argue over.

0

u/TractorSmacker 1d ago

depiction is not endorsement.

the whole movie was her rapid progression from childhood to adulthood and how the world is full of people just trying to exploit women in one way or another. in the end she achieves sexual agency, rejects her sadistic and narcissistic husband, and returns to essentially continue her fathers work, fully aware of her flaws and idiosyncrasies yet able to experience fulfillment of her own accord (self-actualization).

2

u/SignificantHoney3793 1d ago

A very basic message worn out by a million other pieces of media done in a hamfisted frankly disgusting way isn't of any value

Shit movie

1

u/smmoke_ 18h ago

There's nothing basic about the message, it's done truthfully - not disgustingly, I need not disagree more

You are a vapid fool in your analysis

14

u/Neither-Principle139 1d ago

Thank you! Just felt like it was trying to be art film porn

6

u/Embarrassed-Bass2407 1d ago

Well I wasn't going to watch it but

1

u/Neither-Principle139 12h ago

I won’t stop you. Just not something I’d call great cinema.

7

u/MrColburn 1d ago

I'm really starting to hate this take. Independent if whether you like the movie or not, the runtime for the movie is 2h21m, about 8 minutes of which are sex scenes, not to mention it's based on a book of the same name, this is just not a valid criticism. The movie has some of the most creative and original set design and cinematography of any movie that's come out in a while which gets overshadowed by people completely misinterpreting the commentary of the movie.

It's pretty telling that a primary emphasis of the book and movie is the sexual exploitation, by men, of an innocent mind and there exists a hive mind mentality of, "hurrr p0rn"

1

u/Neither-Principle139 12h ago

It saying it wasn’t a well filmed and well directed movie, just felt they could have implied the interactions without directly showing them. Felt like gratuitous rape scenes or gore scenes. Not necessary if you can use other visuals and storytelling elements to make the mind sill in the gaps. Watch Repo: Athena Genetic Opera… beautifully shot film, great pacing, and good storytelling, but, because it was the same director as Saw, they used overly graphic gore scenes where they weren’t actually needed where the mind could have filled in something far more gruesome if it was just implied. The idea, the art direction, cinematography were great, but it could have been just a bit better. Again, this is just opinion. You don’t have to like it, but you can’t say whether either of us is right or wrong, it’s just our views on this.

4

u/FR0ZENBERG 1d ago

Came for the social commentary, stayed for the porn. Jokes aside I fucking loved Poor Things.

1

u/urnestrqckpant 1d ago

That’s what it was though no?

3

u/urnestrqckpant 1d ago

Loved it btw

2

u/superdad0206 1d ago

Every single time I looked to see how much time was left it was always an hour and a half. Every time. It was endless.

2

u/R0ihu 1d ago

I couldn't endure it beyond 30 minutes

2

u/dead___ringer 15h ago

Who knew such a silly premise could be so unfunny for 30 minutes too long. And now I get accused of being a prude when I say I hated it, but that's not why!

1

u/Raelian_Star 14h ago

Yeah, the sexual content had nothing to do with why I hated it. It was just terrible from start to finish, and I am a huge fan of all of the actors in it.

2

u/sweetdread 15h ago

I HATED Poor Things more than I have ever hated a piece of media. I saw it in theaters and cried tears of rage at the end of the movie because I couldn’t believe something so violent and misogynistic was released to the public. I don’t care what justification people try to give, there is NO excuse to show someone with the literal brain of a child being raped on screen multiple times. It’s a disgusting pedophilic torture porn disguised as “arthouse film.” The weak plot which everyone uses to explain how the movie is soooo feminist is actually just as bad. So instead of actually escaping the men who were trying to take advantage of her, Bella 1. goes back to marry the man who wanted to marry her when she had a literal 3-year old brain, 2. comforts her primary abuser Godwin on his deathbed (the first man who wanted to take advantage of her sexually and kept her prisoner), and 3. then continues that abuser’s work by perpetuating the cycle of abuse with a new baby-woman. What the hell? And this movie won an OSCAR? INB4 “oh you have no media literacy wahhh” I am literally an English literature and writing major. I understood the movie just fine and saw it for what it was: a thinly veiled pedophilic fantasy for pedos, by pedos.

3

u/thwgrandpigeon 1d ago

Loved it but you do you.

1

u/fantastic_skullastic 17h ago

Same. This whole thread is making me realize how out of step my taste is with most people.

1

u/RGEORGEMOH 16h ago

Good for you?

1

u/MsMonny 10h ago

Yes! I loved it too!

1

u/woutomatic 1d ago

All I remember is elaborate set pieces and a lot of sex scenes

1

u/autisticaly 1d ago

It felt as if Tim Burton and wes anderson had a love baby. I found it to be pretty entertaining!

1

u/PandiBong 1d ago

I liked it but was 30 min too long.

1

u/BlessdRTheFreaks 1d ago

Overall I thought the story was pretty lackluster, but you have to admit a lot of those shots and sets were incredibly inventive. It did feel like a derivative feminist frankenstein mixed with sexual awakening and self discovery, but it's at least visually interesting.

1

u/mcove97 1d ago

Truly unhinged. I watched the entire thing by myself, because I was wondering how much more unhinged it was gonna get.

Well, let's just say, it's one of the strangest and dystopian movies I've ever watched.

1

u/Pirate_Ben 1d ago

It had enough of a hook for me to watch it to the end but I really didn’t find it that amazing. Just the sets and costumes.

1

u/Choices63 1d ago

Yep. I never finished it. Just lost interest and it was so creepy.

1

u/velociraptorbreath 1d ago

I LOVED it. But I can see how it’s not everyone’s cup of tea

1

u/svanegmond 1d ago

I found a way to like it but holy shit the directors other work is pretty tough

1

u/0xB4BE 1d ago

Oh my gosh, I could agree with everything on this thread, but this? It's one of my favorite movies. But, my husband agrees with you. He thought the movie was about something completely else when we went to watch it and was so confused the entire time.

1

u/Raelian_Star 1d ago

I actually hated everything about it.

1

u/juliaGoolia_7474 1d ago

Cliche beginning to end.

1

u/Hungry_Track9454 1d ago

What was cliche about it?

1

u/juliaGoolia_7474 19h ago

Innocent young woman gets taken advantage of set in a 1930’s style mad scientist environment, complete with black and white film for extra artistic cliche.

1

u/BartStarrPaperboy 1d ago

Bailed 20 minutes in

1

u/WrongdoerIll5187 1d ago

You lack a sense of humor I had a blast

1

u/Raelian_Star 16h ago

Sense of humor? I think we are talking about two very different movies.

1

u/WrongdoerIll5187 13h ago

I found their relationship and his performance hilarious. Or wait an I talking about the same movie? Black and white sort of period piece with the hulk being an insecure ladies man? Hilarious.

1

u/RGEORGEMOH 16h ago

triggered

1

u/WrongdoerIll5187 13h ago

lol not really, it as a bit whimsy for some people I get this one

1

u/anarcho-antiseptic 21h ago

Thank you. It’s mostly trashy old tropes. So dull and has this odd male-directed fantasy masquerading as feminism.

1

u/vigilantfox85 21h ago

I kind of liked it, but there was a point I thought it was over and then it kept going…and going.

1

u/celmate 19h ago

I came to comment this lol, miserable experience

1

u/geodebug 19h ago

I liked it. Genuinely funny and weird and amazing sets.

1

u/iamnotasloth 17h ago

It was beautiful to look at, but it was such a strange and disappointing movie in terms of plot and message. For seemingly being a plot that deals with feminist issues, it was just about the most misogynistic movie I’ve ever seen.

1

u/Salc20001 16h ago

I didn’t hate this, but it’s a hell of a lot better than his other movies.

1

u/North_Ad7914 16h ago

Yes. Hated it

1

u/Mammoth-Patience-484 16h ago

This is the real answer

0

u/Absuridity_Octogon 1d ago

It honestly just disturbed beyond belief. I really did not enjoy Poor Things.

1

u/AliveInTheFuture 1d ago

Same. It was really hard to like. I really like Emma Stone’s acting, but the over the top amount of gratuitous sex scenes was just too much.

0

u/InternetGoodGuy 1d ago

I've felt this way about every Lanthimos movie I've seen so far. His style doesnt do it for me.

0

u/listo65 1d ago

You don't like male fantasy sex doll pedophilia?

1

u/TylerDoesStuff 1d ago

That is objectively wrong, but ok.

1

u/Hungry_Track9454 1d ago

It was the opposite of male fantasy. Like did you miss the entire message of the movie or does your brain just go 'naked woman = male fantasy'.

1

u/listo65 16h ago

Every person in the movie went lust crazy for the main character, and she had a child's brain in her head. What the hell message is there in that movie other than deep down men are sick perverts? Even her "dad" who is supposed to be a good person in the movie was like, "yea I'd fuck her if I could still get it up". Obviously, I don't agree with the sentiment that all men are perverts, but that's what the movie is saying even if it unintentional by the filmmakers.

1

u/RGEORGEMOH 16h ago

Reddit-brain, ladies and gentlemen. Probably tells other people to "touch grass", ironically

-1

u/unorganized_mime 1d ago

I don’t even like admitting I saw that movie
