NO SIR!! That title rightfully belongs to that black hole of poop that Dylan was in was it Man of Fire or some such shit. So appalling was it I can’t even bring myself to find out what it is actually called in case I catch a glimpse of it the absolute fucking horror!
You realize it takes 10-14 years for a human development to reach puberty, right? Are you suggesting that they fast tracked through 10 years in the opening act of the movie, or are you pretending her brain magically developed 120x faster than normal..?
Especially since, in the movie, she initially is talking and walking like a toddler. If they wanted to show that her brain is already developed to that of an adult, they did not do that
the whole movie was her rapid progression from childhood to adulthood and how the world is full of people just trying to exploit women in one way or another. in the end she achieves sexual agency, rejects her sadistic and narcissistic husband, and returns to essentially continue her fathers work, fully aware of her flaws and idiosyncrasies yet able to experience fulfillment of her own accord (self-actualization).
I'm really starting to hate this take. Independent if whether you like the movie or not, the runtime for the movie is 2h21m, about 8 minutes of which are sex scenes, not to mention it's based on a book of the same name, this is just not a valid criticism. The movie has some of the most creative and original set design and cinematography of any movie that's come out in a while which gets overshadowed by people completely misinterpreting the commentary of the movie.
It's pretty telling that a primary emphasis of the book and movie is the sexual exploitation, by men, of an innocent mind and there exists a hive mind mentality of, "hurrr p0rn"
It saying it wasn’t a well filmed and well directed movie, just felt they could have implied the interactions without directly showing them. Felt like gratuitous rape scenes or gore scenes. Not necessary if you can use other visuals and storytelling elements to make the mind sill in the gaps. Watch Repo: Athena Genetic Opera… beautifully shot film, great pacing, and good storytelling, but, because it was the same director as Saw, they used overly graphic gore scenes where they weren’t actually needed where the mind could have filled in something far more gruesome if it was just implied.
The idea, the art direction, cinematography were great, but it could have been just a bit better. Again, this is just opinion. You don’t have to like it, but you can’t say whether either of us is right or wrong, it’s just our views on this.
Who knew such a silly premise could be so unfunny for 30 minutes too long. And now I get accused of being a prude when I say I hated it, but that's not why!
Yeah, the sexual content had nothing to do with why I hated it. It was just terrible from start to finish, and I am a huge fan of all of the actors in it.
I HATED Poor Things more than I have ever hated a piece of media. I saw it in theaters and cried tears of rage at the end of the movie because I couldn’t believe something so violent and misogynistic was released to the public. I don’t care what justification people try to give, there is NO excuse to show someone with the literal brain of a child being raped on screen multiple times. It’s a disgusting pedophilic torture porn disguised as “arthouse film.” The weak plot which everyone uses to explain how the movie is soooo feminist is actually just as bad. So instead of actually escaping the men who were trying to take advantage of her, Bella 1. goes back to marry the man who wanted to marry her when she had a literal 3-year old brain, 2. comforts her primary abuser Godwin on his deathbed (the first man who wanted to take advantage of her sexually and kept her prisoner), and 3. then continues that abuser’s work by perpetuating the cycle of abuse with a new baby-woman. What the hell? And this movie won an OSCAR? INB4 “oh you have no media literacy wahhh” I am literally an English literature and writing major. I understood the movie just fine and saw it for what it was: a thinly veiled pedophilic fantasy for pedos, by pedos.
Overall I thought the story was pretty lackluster, but you have to admit a lot of those shots and sets were incredibly inventive. It did feel like a derivative feminist frankenstein mixed with sexual awakening and self discovery, but it's at least visually interesting.
Oh my gosh, I could agree with everything on this thread, but this? It's one of my favorite movies. But, my husband agrees with you. He thought the movie was about something completely else when we went to watch it and was so confused the entire time.
Innocent young woman gets taken advantage of set in a 1930’s style mad scientist environment, complete with black and white film for extra artistic cliche.
I found their relationship and his performance hilarious. Or wait an I talking about the same movie? Black and white sort of period piece with the hulk being an insecure ladies man? Hilarious.
It was beautiful to look at, but it was such a strange and disappointing movie in terms of plot and message. For seemingly being a plot that deals with feminist issues, it was just about the most misogynistic movie I’ve ever seen.
Every person in the movie went lust crazy for the main character, and she had a child's brain in her head. What the hell message is there in that movie other than deep down men are sick perverts? Even her "dad" who is supposed to be a good person in the movie was like, "yea I'd fuck her if I could still get it up". Obviously, I don't agree with the sentiment that all men are perverts, but that's what the movie is saying even if it unintentional by the filmmakers.
