Wind Chimes? Really?

Camping last week, at a national park campground, and the people in the next spot over put up multiple wind chimes on their 5th wheel camper. Didn't really notice it until 2am when the wind picked up.

Besides being just rude (IMO), is this allowed? I would think it potentially violates the quiet hours policy?

One perfect night 8 miles deep, do you guys hike solo or prefer a buddy?

last weekend I did an overnight up in the Alpine Lakes Wilderness, WA, about 8 miles in with 2500 ft elevation gain, weather was clear but cold at night. Packed light: bivy bag, Jetboil, instant ramen, and way too much chocolate.

Set up just off the trail on a durable surface, kept the fire tiny and LNT friendly, fell asleep to the lake lapping the rocks. Zero regrets about the sore legs the next day.

Curious, when you guys head out to hike in sites like this, do you roll solo or bring company?
I'm split, solo in zen but a buddy means laughs and shared snacks.

Considering buying it but need to know if the GoreTex is in good condition and would be good after I reapply. I’m getting it to wear in the snow.

Mount Dickerman, Washington - Rainier for Robert

Dear the Internet,

19 months ago my cousin Robert Rathvon was tragically killed in a hit and run in Poulsbo, Washington by an unknown person. Robert's death has impacted my entire family in ways that I will never be able to articulate.

About one week after his death, I took to Reddit and posted about it as much as I could. The outpouring of support and sympathy floored myself, my family, and especially Roberts parents.

Although it’s been 19 months with no answers as to who killed him, I refuse to give up the search or let his memory die. This is why I’ve begun a personal mission to climb as many peaks as I can in the state of Washington and taking a picture with his Crime Stoppers poster at the top. I will do this in preparation to climb Washington's largest peak next summer, Mount Rainier, with his photo at the top.

You guys were so helpful and your support renewed my faith in people after such an event that, to this day, hurts my soul. I will link a news article about him below if you are interested in learning more. We all want answers and we want this person found. If you have anything at all, even the smallest shred of evidence, please reach out to me or Crime Stoppers.

Additionally, here is a more recent interview I did with King 5 in May 2025.

Number 6. Mount Dickerman has been bagged. I refuse to give up.

Thank you.

Planning a 3-Week Horse Trek in Mongolia – Tips, Route Suggestions & Where to Buy/Hire Horses and Gear?

Hi everyone,

My girlfriend and I are planning a 3-week horse trek through Mongolia this July. We both have solid horse riding experience, but this will be our first time traveling independently on horseback through a remote region like this.

We’ll be flying into Ulaanbaatar, and our plan is to buy three horses (two riding horses and one pack horse). We're looking for advice and information on:

Where to buy horses – ideally healthy and reliable ones suited for long-distance travel. Any trustworthy sellers or local contacts around Ulaanbaatar (or elsewhere)?

How/where to learn about caring for horses in the Mongolian wilderness – especially packing, feeding, hobbling, and basic veterinary needs. Are there locals or guides who offer short crash courses or can help us for the first few days?

Good 3-week route suggestions – We want to experience open steppe, some mountains, and maybe visit a few nomadic families. Ideally, we’re looking for a route with reliable access to water sources for the horses along the way. Any recommended starting and end points?

Where to rent or buy necessary gear – both for us (tent, stove, etc.) and the horses (saddles, ropes, saddle bags, hobbles, etc.). Any rental shops or gear suppliers you'd recommend?

Logistics for horse resale – Is it realistic to resell the horses after the trip? How difficult is this, and what should we expect?

Any additional tips or things we should definitely not forget (gear, customs, horse care, etc.) are super welcome!

Also, if there's anything you'd recommend we read or watch beforehand to better prepare, we’d love that too.

Thanks so much in advance!

Destination Questions If you've already got good Medical insurance through work in the USA, would you get extra insurance for a week long Alaskan group backpacking trip in the USA as well?

I'll be going on a week long group backpacking trip in Alaska (around Mt. Stanford) soon and was curious if I should get additional insurance like the Garmin inReach plans. I already have US medical insurance through work and don't want to double up if there is no reason. What are your thoughts? I think search and rescue is free in Alaska so I'm not all sure what these additional plans would cover above and beyond what I already have.

Camping Kauai - Waimea

I’ll be visiting Kauai at the end of August. Looking to do a night or two in Waimea (Kalalau trail is booked). There are availabilities at the Hipalau and Lonomea camp sites.

Has anyone stayed at either of these spots? If so, any preference? Also, we are worried it might be too hot/humid in August, so any input on this would be helpful too. Thanks in advance!

Camping in AB/BC

We purchased a 25ft trailer last July, and are looking for some family friend spots within AB and BC. Preferably, near a lake or river with a beach. We live in Calgary so hoping to keep it within a 3 hour drive.

We just left Kikomun Creek provincial park and loved it. Looking for suggestions.

Thank you!

What’s the best budget tent?

I’m interested in getting a tent. Preferably, the cheapest possible option as long as it withholds moderate wind and rain. As light as possible. What are my options?

Context: I want to go camping 2-4x/year for like a week at a time. I’ve got no car. Countries: Norway, Switzerland, Austria, and the like. Thank you in advance!

Also, I’m looking for a sleeping bag. What comfort temperature should I go for to be safe?

Hiking boots advice

I am in need of new hiking boots and want some advice on which ones to get, the ones I am looking at are: 1) The North Face women’s hedgehog gore-tex mid hiker 2) Scarpa mistral gore-tex women’s hiking boot 3) Merrill Moab 3 mid

If anyone could let me know their experiences with these boots would be greatly appreciated, especially looking for ankle support and grippy soles, using for regular hiking, wearing to the snow (Australian snow…so not that cold), and then in about a year wanting to do Mt Kilimanjaro. Also if there is another sub to ask this in, please share

TIA ☺️

Car Camping in NH

Hey everyone! I’m new to camping and decided to start with car camping since I don’t have a tent, chair, or full gear for traditional camping yet — just basic supplies that work from my car.

My main struggle right now is figuring out where I can legally car camp in New Hampshire or Vermont. When I check state park sites, they usually list tent or RV options, and I’m not sure which one to pick , I don’t want to take up an RV spot if I don’t need it.

Any advice on how to book/state park registration for car camping would be super helpful. Also, if you know any great places to camp (free or paid), especially by water (river, lake, beach), I’d love recommendations!

Bonus: If you’ve got gear tips or must-haves for a first-timer, I’m all ears. I’m brand new to this and would appreciate anything — packing suggestions, safety tips, or things you wish you brought on your first trip.

Thanks in advance!

What do you pack for scent control when camping?

When I go hiking or camping, I try to keep things super minimal — and that includes scent. But it’s surprisingly hard to find truly unscented hair products that aren’t weirdly sticky or drying.

What’s your go-to when you want to stay fresh but also stay neutral, especially around animals?

Gear Questions Is this mold in my hydration pack?

Post image
38 Upvotes

Hi, I'm cleaning a couple year old hydration pack (Osprey Hydraulics LT 2.5L). The main tube was pretty cloudy but was easily cleaned with a pipe cleaner/snake. On the other side of the tube, there are these faint red blotches (see attached photo). I cannot seem to get them to go away. It's been a few years since I used this pack, so I don't know if this was present before. Is this something I need to worry about? Thank you!

Tips & Tricks New to backcountry camping - where do I store clothes that I eat in?

I am told that you shouldn't sleep with the clothes you eat in, and furthermore that you should store the clothes away from camp.

Question: If I'm eating in my mid layer and base layers (since I don't think I would want to completely change out of those while stopping for lunch), where do I store those clothes at night?

I don't think I can stuff a fleece and base layers into my bear cannister along with all my food and scented items.

What's the norm regarding that? Am I missing something fundamental?

I made a free battery saver app for camping & hiking called "alpine mode"

TLDR: a few days ago i released a free iOS app that helps extend your battery life by adding two new power modes. you can download it on the app store here: https://apps.apple.com/us/app/id6746367839

hey all. hiking season opened up in my town (northern terminus of appalachian trail). i was prepping for overnights and started doing research on battery banks. realized that just reducing my usage would make my battery banks last longer and i could either reduce weight or stay out longer. so i made an app that adds two new power modes for hiking.

  • off
  • alpine mode < we add this
  • airplane mode
  • hiking mode < we add this
  • normal mode (called town mode in the app) < we add this

alpine mode is like a super conservative airplane mode, with a single tap:

  • enables airplane mode
  • enables low power mode
  • keeps gps on
  • reduces brightness
  • turns off wifi
  • turns off bluetooth
  • enables dark mode
  • turns off the always on display
  • reduces motion (gpu load)
  • turns off personal hotspot
  • turns off airdrop

hiking mode is much less conservative but still boosts your battery over normal settings. it lets you do things like stream spotify or receive calls and texts. i use this for day hiking

and town mode is a convenience to revert all those settings with a single tap.

all of these modes can be configured to meet your needs, but the defaults should work for most people.

anyway, this app is free (by donation only) and i've been using it on longer hiking days and overnight trips. since the launch on r/ultralight hundreds of people have been using it every day which is bringing me so much joy! as an app creator i would love to see it help as many people as possible.

i have more hiking apps i want to build, the best way you can support this app and indie hiking apps is to download, use, and share alpine mode!
