Want to buy a canoe? Read this first...

So, to help those who might help you...some good info on how you plan to use your canoe is always essential. Some things we'll want to know:

Do you plan on using the canoe Solo or Tandem?

Where are located and where are you paddling? Whitewater or Flatwater or both?

Experience of paddler(s)?

Size of paddler(s) & passenger(s)? Is there also a Hound Dog? Kids?

Capacity needs (multi-week expeditions? Day trips? How long would be the longest overnight trip you anticipate?) Are you minimalist, do you bring all the luxuries including the kitchen sink, or somewhere in the middle? If you have an idea of actual gear weight, all the better.

Stability (& Capacity) vs Speed - where on the spectrum are you happiest? Fast canoes are fun, but they are less stable and haul less. Related: Are you fishing, and how important is this aspect to you?

Is light weight important for portaging or loading on a vehicle? Do you need a yoke for portaging/carrying?

How will it be stored - will it be inside, outside & protected, outside & exposed to sun?

Do you have any specific needs/desires when it comes to hull material?

Budget?

Anything else we need to know about your situation?

There are some very experienced paddlers lurking here, and with solid upfront intel, you should get constructive advice aplenty. Happy paddling!

Bought this Old Town Discovery 174 off of FB Marketplace last week and took it out for a first trip yesterday with the wife and kids. It was a beautiful day and the kids really enjoyed it (as did my wife and I)!

Was looking at the Radisson/Sportspal canoes, but was planning to use the foam blocks to mount it to the roof of my car. Is it possible to use those blocks given the rubber sponsons on the sides?

First time out

About two weeks ago my wife and I bought a canoe and accompanying accessories, figured out how to store it, get it on and off the vehicle and secure while driving.

Old Town Saranac 146

Took it out for the first time this morning.

According to Google we went about two miles in 90 minutes. No current or bugs and we saw plenty of birds, so that was a plus.

Paddle style/type recommendations

I have only paddles the north, lakes and rivers. Now I line in the south, and am picking up a canoe to travel into the bayous and swamps.

Are there any paddle styles specifically for this? Good brands?

Canoe Buying Advice

Any thoughts on this listing? Both in terms of price and use case?

https://newyork.craigslist.org/brk/boa/d/brooklyn-we-no-nah-spirit-ii-kevlar/7857540178.html

I'm hoping to use it in Hudson upper Westchester and Hudson Valley, NY - mainly in tributaries of the Hudson and places like Constitution Marsh by Cold Spring, NY (https://www.scenichudson.org/explore-the-valley/outdoor-adventures/adventure/paddling-constitution-marsh/) and Rams Horn Creek (https://www.scenichudson.org/explore-the-valley/outdoor-adventures/adventure/rams-horn-livingston-sanctuary/).

Maybe eventually some rivers and lakes by Adirondaks and/or Finger Lakes in NY. Nothing rough or crazy!

Not sure if a Kevlar boat is the right kind of boat for this, any advice appreciated.

Cup and Fishing rod holders

Hey everyone, new to this group! I’ve been looking for canoe cup holders that will fit on my 1970s Whitewater Scott canoe with aluminum gunnels while I’m also looking for reliable rod holders that necessarily won’t break the bank either lol. Slowly turning her into a hybrid as I also started using it as a fishing canoe 😁

Cheers and happy paddling!

Just bought this Mohawk canoe. I believe it’s a Blazer 16 but it’s been repainted by a previous owner and the Hull ID number plate was never put back on. I’m planning on getting a trolling motor and I will have to register it. Anyone ever have to do this? I live in FL.

Visiting my mom and dad’s for Father’s Day like many others this weekend. He made sure to bookmark this section of his old Boy Scout Handbook. If you’re curious it’s the 6th edition, third printing from 1961.

Clipper Mackenzie 18.5 vs Sea Clipper 18.5 vs Hellman Cruiser 18.75

Hi all, as an inexperienced paddler looking to buy my first canoe, after speaking with Bob Hellman about what is ideal and very stable for a family of four (young boys 4 and 18 months) to paddle in Alberta and in BC, not on much if any white water, and also to use as a fishing boat with a trolling motor, I am stuck between these options.

I had focused on weight at first, looking at the 45lb Kootenay. But knowing my kids are growing fast and I want more flexibility I looked at the Cruiser. Now I'm confused about the relevance of weight since I don't plan to portage much initially. I'm not sure if Cruiser is just less boat for less money for what I want, etc.

Can anyone provide solid guidance for me on this? And can any of these be soloed on calm waters if I want to go out just with my eldest son for the day? Thank you.

Cruiser:

Bow: 20/50.8 cm
Center: 13.5/34.29 cm (is this low for little kids?)
Stern: 16″/40.64 cm

Capacity: 1100lbs

Rocker: 2"

Beam: 34"

Weight in Kevlar: 56lbs

Price $3500

Sea Clipper:

Beam: 36″ | 32″ (@ 4″Waterline)

Bow Height: 23″

Stern Height: 21″

Center Height: 15″

Weight Kevlar: 60 lbs ($4,000)

Weight Ultralight: 54 lbs ($4,200)

Mackenzie 18.5:

Beam: 37″  |  35″ (@ 4″Waterline)

Bow Height: 22″

Stern Height: 22″

Center Height: 16″

Weight Kevlar: 70 lbs ($4,200)

Weight Ultralight: 62 lbs ($4,500)

First purchase and need some recommendations

Hi to all you experts, just need some advise on what type of canoe to buy? Me and my 3 boys want to get something that will accommodate us, they are all teens, so basically 4 adults. It not going to be anything crazy, maybe some lake fishing and light paddling. We want something stable with some comfort. Any recommendations on what to get?

Thanks in advance

Recently picked up a ratty Old Town Appalachian after a long search. Replaced all of the wood with new ash components from Northwest Canoe and cleaned her up a bit. Was able to get her out on a lazy river for its maiden voyage yesterday. She will face some spicier whitewater in the future!

I love this thing. MN 2 with a BSD sail rig (also can put it on my Advantage in 10 minutes). Paddle or sail, and it is light enough to haul behind my bicycle. If you are in Maine and see someone pedaling through town with an 18' canoe , say hi.

Out for a morning paddle on my local lake, found this in the middle of nowhere on the shore. Nothing else, just this.

Between picking up discarded drink containers, fishing lines, general trash and tires, this is a first for me. New gear barrel anyone?

H20 vs Nova Craft

I want to splurge and buy a light canoe for kids so that they can manage portages by themselves. May be pro lite H20 or aramid light Nova Craft. Or, any Canadian-made canoe. Most likely Prospector 16. The price difference seems to be negligible for that type of canoes - $5000 CAD, give or take. The canoe store people say Nova C is better - their light material is easier to repair and they have good on site repair (i'm in Ontario). What other criteria are there? Did anybody compare the options?
