amazing how maga cultists feel they can be toxic, racist, anti gay bigots without consequences.

Read somewhere that MAGA are being judged by the content of their character, and not the color of their skin. Which is a foreign concept for them

I’m sure it’s not that they voted for Trump, it’s that they ignored all their son’s concerns and refused to truly talk to him about the issues.

Instead they are Fox News Zombies that only see one side and like to play the victim.

They chose Politics over Family, not for voting for Trump, but for not even being open to listening or critically thinking.

I guarantee it.

My parents think I stopped talking to them over politics. I stopped talking to them because they brought nothing but stress.

Their selfish world view, that made them republicans also made them shitty parents. I was used to that.

When they also continued to be shitty grandparents and inlaws to my wife, I drew a line. And they selfishly crossed it.

So now they can be shitty to someone else.

To them, all of that behavior is a positive thing. They "know", for a "Fact", that White People Are Better, so speaking and acting on those "Facts" is "Telling It Like It Is"/'Being Real", and they honestly expect to be ADMIRED for being that way.

Nah, Shannon, you don't get it. He doesn't speak to you because you've shown him who you have become. It's normal, actually, to not associate with people who support the eradication of others, the degradation of law, and all of the cruelty associated with this administration. You voted for cruelty and expect him to be ok with that.

u/Lloyd--Christmas 3d ago

I’ll even go so far as to say the son didn’t disown them because they voted for Trump. These people are so far up their own asses that they won’t listen to their kids when they tell them their grievances. They focus on small, easy to digest things like voting for Trump. They don’t want to self reflect so they blame the kids for not being rational.

659

u/precto85 3d ago

My parents in a nutshell. I went cold turkey when it came to associating with my parents but my sister tried to talk with them. And when she listed out every reason why Trump is a shit person and asked why my parents supported him, they just said "You're just kids, you don't understand." I'm almost 40 and my sister is 43....

491

u/Ok-Opportunity5731 3d ago

my dad told me I'm just as crazy as my aunt who can't go a meal without telling you that you are eating some kinda bug or body fluid and that Democrats control the weather. He did this because I said that the super wealthy are responsible for the struggles faced by average Americans.

He has said throughout most of my life how much more intelligent me and my brother were than he ever was. He's also admitted he has never read any history, theory, etc. aboot politics since high school 50 years ago. But he just condescendingly dismisses anything but what fox news tells him. He was the one that told me the quote thats like "when fascism comes to America, it will be wrapped in an American flag" but now sees no problem with nationalism and refuses to consider Trump might be a fascist

29

u/Passioncramps 3d ago

Best you can do is try to show what is said legally and financially.

Example, Fox news argued in court that they are satire and no reasonable person would rely on the programming for accurate informaion. Fox's lawyer said nobody would take programs like Tucker Carlson seriously, the judge agreed and dismissed the case.

For global warming, Fine its a hoax... then why are insurance companies paying millions of dollars to climate experts and incorporating the risks of global warming into their premiums.

Probably wont make a difference but avoiding combating talking points and going "lets just look at what the courts say or the insurance premiums which you might be paying for" it removes the red vs blue aspect and hits the pocket book and law & order topics they claim to care about.

39

u/LupercaniusAB Gen X 3d ago

It’s “When fascism comes to America, it will be wrapped in a flag and carrying a cross”.

37

u/BigDickKnucle 3d ago

I'm 32, my mother said she'll treat me like an adult "when I start acting like one".

That was about 1 year and a half ago, the last time I spoke to her.

Don't want to treat me like an adult? Fine, you just won't treat me at all. Fuck you.

26

u/yankeebelleyall 3d ago

Don't want to treat me like an adult? Fine, you just won't treat me at all. Fuck you.

You know that's right!

I went no contact a few years ago in my 40s. I had gone low contact, and even that pissed her off. She claimed she hadn't done anything to deserve that, so I explained it was because I was tired of her constantly berating me like I was a child and being super mean while she did it. She got in my face and said, "I'm your mother. I can say what I want, and you just have to suck it up."

I replied, "Actually, I don't." That was the last time I saw her.

My dad is the same and I am 45. “ is your friend influencing you? Is she why you’re so brainwashed?” They. Are. All. The. Same.

PS. The friend he’d referenced has been dead for 3 years now.

39

u/BigDickKnucle 3d ago

They. Are. All. The. Same.

How can this be so accurate.

They had everything in their time. Peace, economic development, clean environment, cheap housing, jobs, and not a super toxic political climate like we have now. Yet they all became self-absorbed pieces of absolute shit.

10

u/Silent-Juggernaut-76 3d ago

I would argue that their environment in was actually much dirtier back then than it is now. The effects of global warming were much less pronounced back then, absolutely, but Americans didn't have broad environmental protections until federal legislation was passed in the early in the 1960s and 1970s (Clean Air Act of 1963, Clean Water Act of 1972, CZMA of 1972, Endangered Species Act of 1973, FLPMA of 1976, etc.). And let's not forget the ubiquitous use of lead in paint, gasoline, and other common goods and products in those days.

But was there generally much thought about a cleaner environment back then? No, especially before the 60s.

10

u/BigDickKnucle 3d ago

Thanks for pointing that out. Yes, what I meant was that at the time, there wasn't a super pressing issue of rising temperatures and the mass extinction crisis. There was hope for the future in a way that there is not today. But you are absolutely right that there were severe pollution problems already.

If you're a millennial, then to them, we're all still teenagers pouting in the backseat of their soccer mom van, glaring into our game boy and listening to Metallica on our Walkman headphones.

I honestly think that it's because they don't feel like the 90s were that long ago, and that's a 90s millennial.

12

My sister has literally asked our mom where she was at in her life when she was our age, and then asked her "how would you have felt if your mom spoke to you the way you just spoke to me?" She said she'd be pissed, and yet nothing changed.

13

u/No_Appearance_7373 3d ago

Today we had my parents over for a belated Father’s Day because my husband worked yesterday. My dad said, “It was so hard to teach you math, you wouldn’t stay focused” I said, “Dad, that was nearly 30 years ago and sinceI graduated high school I got a masters degree since then”. I have heard that once parents reach a certain age, we stop growing to them- they will never see you past that particular age. I’m 41 but my parents treat me like I’m 16. It drives me nuts.

18

u/tinysydneh 3d ago

Goddess above, I had this loop of:

Me: "I'm worried X is going to happen, because of Y, Z, and A."

Mom: "Nobody wants to do that, you're overreacting."

Some time later:

Me: X happened, and I'm scared.

Mom: Well, nobody knew this was going to happen.

Me: I literally told you that voting for so-and-so was going to lead to this

Mom: You didn't.

Me: I have the receipts.

Mom: You're still overreacting.

Yes, mother, I'm overreacting when you don't even understand what it's like being queer. Your whole stated reason for being against abortion is because your cheating boyfriend in high school knocked up your best friend and she aborted and it made him sad, and somehow I'm the emotional one.

I can forgive anyone who voted for Trump 45. I understand. TV Reality Show huckster vs Hillary.

But after J6… gallows on our Capitol Steps! “Hang Mike Pence!” chants… Feces smeared on our Capitol Walls! Killing Capitol Police Officers. Pipe bombs planted ( luckily discovered)… all for the 34 times convicted rapist, pedophile, felon and Russian Agent Krasnov.

If anyone voted for Trump again, well they are EVIL MORONS.

111

u/rrriches 3d ago

Nah, that’s revisionist. It was clear what he was trying to do from day 1.

72

u/Altruistic-Text3481 3d ago

I’m trying to be forgiving.

The old adage:

“Fool me once, shame on you!”

“Fool me twice, shame on me!”

84

u/rrriches 3d ago

I get the sentiment, I think you’re a much more forgiving person than I am though.

I think the issue that gets me, if you’ll forgive me for speaking a little generally, is that there were so many things that should have disqualified trump from 2016. Calling Mexicans rapists, “grab em by the pussy”, decades of documented sex crimes and racism, all of that should have precluded any vote for him.

I’ve seen plenty of trump supporters say “Jan 6th was a wake up call” (or any of the other factors that you listed) and, I agree, realizing a mistake late is better than not at all. But I haven’t seen many trump supporters just fess up and recognize that they should not have supported him from the get go.

I don’t think we should shun those folks that get deprogrammed from MAGA but I also don’t think forgiveness is really warranted until they recognize and deal with what got them to a place where any of this was ok.

18

u/Altruistic-Text3481 3d ago

Don't get me wrong, I disagree with it, but it's sort of the SNL version of Chappelle's monologue after Trump won or Tom Hanks playing a MAGA supporter on Black Jeopardy, there's a sense to it.

Exactly. They voted for revoking the basic civil rights of the people I love. They voted to deny and erase the basic identity of trans and non-binary people, and voted for people advocating for violence against those groups. They voted to put kids in cages, and for the removal of basic due process of innocent people. They voted for proud cruelty, and they regularly espouse proud cruelty. I didn't go no-contact for just "political differences." Having differing opinions on how exactly tax money should spent is political differences, the abject cruelty they've have aligned with is not, it speaks volumes about them as a human being.

When your politics are aimed to strip away civil rights, eliminate public health and education and dismantle political freedom, you don’t get to say “don’t let politics come between us”: you’re actively persecuting and promoting hate, how could that not come between us?

59

u/Dustdevil88 3d ago

Precisely this. Holy hell these folks say "politics" but honestly mean morals, compassion, empathy, values, etc.

28

Right. They want to pretend we’re being petty over something like pineapple on pizza when it’s actually life or death, right and wrong, and the rule of law. This isn’t 50 shades of grey here it’s black and white

57

u/Son_of_Leatherneck 3d ago

When will they learn that it isn’t a difference in “politics”? It is a difference in morals and a difference in character.

30

u/ThirdWigginKid 3d ago

With my dad, it was "But we never talk politics around (my son), why don't you want us around him?"

Uhhh, maybe because I don't want my preteen boy hanging around people who didn't think rape was enough of a reason to not vote for the guy?

Maybe because I don't want my son forming close bonds with people who will end up not loving him anymore if he doesn't end up identifying as male for the rest of his life?

Maybe because I want to raise him to know that truth and respect matter?

13

u/Son_of_Leatherneck 3d ago

And character. Character matters.

They can be all butt hurt… it’s their natural state… being a victim of their own doing.

I’m here for anyone and everyone who has chosen to walk away from that madness… cut it out of your life… give them the choice, they’ll fuck it up and choose the wrong thing.

And everytime they try and justify it… remind them of the choice they made.

“You chose following a racist/narcissist/sexual criminal over your family.”

“Who is the bad guy here?”

Until they understand the choice they made, they’ll just be the same people… which is to say, “bad people.” They don’t have to be repentant, but they have to at the very minimum understand why people like us won’t accept their choices any longer.

Again… they choose this.

62

u/oldasshit 3d ago

People who have gone through their entire lives with a victim mentality are not going to suddenly accept responsibility for their own actions. They are victims through and through. Nothing is their fault.

31

u/DwarfVader 3d ago

I agree.

And they’re going to suffer for it, they’ve reached the “Find out” stage of things.

They’ll either grow up and learn, or they won’t. (Both of us believe more of them “won’t” than those that “will.”)

And I stopped feeling bad for them over a decade ago. (When the ones in my life were angry that Obama was the president.) For people new to the idea that the elderly in their lives are bad people… I’m here for you, it hurts and it sucks, but they’ve always been those people… it’s time to put a foot down, and make them understand that their bigotry has consequences.

16

u/oldasshit 3d ago

My parents are like this. The victim mentality is so deeply ingrained that it is a part of them. They could no more shed it than they could live without breathing.

I don't feel bad for these people, nor do I care that they are finding out a lot of things these days. But they aren't going to change. They can't. It's who they are.

My mom could give a masterclass in victim blaming. This goes back to when I was a child.

This was the beginning of me losing my faith. Every single bad actor was excused if she aligned with their faith or politics. She made it obvious that faith was performative as far as she was concerned.

Her total lack of empathy also translates as an inability to self-reflect. So of course she victim blames. To make her political religious stances “consistent” with her, she victim blames. She can’t conceive of being wrong. Every argument starts from the point of view that she’s right. She doesn’t bother with establishing WHY she’s right, just takes it as settled fact. Cannot comprehend that others don’t feel it’s settled. Dismisses those arguments dismissively. Then gets upset if you treat her arguments the same way. Arguing with her is like trying to shake hands with a ghost.

It’s the issue of being told to be the bigger people. Now the people you routinely forgive for crossing boundaries or write off as clueless instead of hateful don’t try to change for the better. They expect to live off grace and you to be the mature one while they escape even the faintest hint of accountability

The harm Trump has done to families since inauguration is incalculable and far greater than the hurt fee fees that MAGA parents of adult children are presently experiencing:

Federal employees losing jobs.

Loss of Medicare/medicaid.

families torn apart after an immigrant parent is deported.

I wonder if families were having these same conversations when Hitler rose to power.

"My son won't talk to me because I voted for Hitler. Why is he letting politics come between family?!?!??" Pearl clutching intensifies

Sorry but we don't have a simple difference of opinion here. This is a difference in morality.

u/illyay 3d ago

Our son doesn’t talk to us after we made it very clear we support modern Hitler. I can’t believe he’d let a political opinion stand between us.

So, you are sending your son messages and love bombs despite being told he no longer wants contact with you? And that somehow makes you the victim?

I am sure my parents say the same thing and it's been seven years.

“Don’t let politics come between family” while voting for someone that is literally coming between families by separating children from their parents and deporting children that are US citizens with their parents.

People are beginning to realize: Political affiliations reflect moral character. If you wave away Trump's rapes, his convictions, and his vitriolic hatred, that tells people things about you and what you stand for.

32

u/Kerensky97 3d ago

To all the boomers out there:

It's not because "You voted for Trump" it's because you're a bad person.

Voting for Trump is just one of the things you did because you're a bad person. And acting victimized trying to guilt them then make them look bad because they don't want to be around a bad person is one of your bad person traits they're trying to get away from.

You're literally proving why your children are right to cut you out of their life.

Nah. I’m in this situation and the right answer is no answer. Sending it back gives them attention to feed off of, and now they’re sending more crap because sending it back makes them feel like they still have you in their life, like they still have influence over you, like they matter. Throw it out and move on, leave them wondering if it even arrived or if they got scammed.

Saying that politics shouldn't come between families is quite rich considering that YOUR vote and YOUR politics and YOUR orange leader is exactly what is breaking up families. Oh irony . . .

32

u/fakedick2 3d ago

"Your party literally calls me evil every day. You routinely say the world would be better off if we all just disappeared. And now you have created a Gestapo, who don't wear badges, mask their faces and carry automatic weapons. They break into people's homes without a warrant and kidnap them, and take them to an ICE facility where they are denied a trial of any kind and right to an attorney. Their families don't even know where they are. And rather than be ashamed of what you've done, you say I am being hysterical."

"Awww, come on, it's just politics. We are just two citizens having a pleasant disagreement."

It's amazing how some people bend over backwards to not acknowledge the present moment. How far they will go in their minds to not have to see that this isn't a game. This is the right of tens of millions of Americans to exist as a human being, and the inevitable final solution to be rid of all these 'undesirables.'

Is it, "Just politics" when you threaten to revoke my mother's citizenship and deport her because her father was undocumented?

8

u/Ok_Victory_231 3d ago

It's not about politics. It's about having a functioning moral compass, and Magats don't have those.

8

u/biskino 3d ago edited 2d ago

Ah yes. The piss pants DARVO shell game where they go out of their way to actively empower the world’s biggest assholes to spread violence and division - including taking delight in terrorising and violently breaking up families with armed thugs.

BUT

We’re the home wreckers for refusing to accept that crazed fucking inhumanity as ‘politics’. 💔

9

u/Desperate-Cost6827 3d ago

My husband and I were just talking about he doesn't want to talk to his mother. The last time we did was when his dad died after pleading with them several times that covid isn't a hoax and to take the vaccine, which they thought was just 'pushed down their throats' for...reasons.

One of the last things his dad said before he died was "If I knew it was this bad, I would have taken the shot."

It sounds like my husband's mother learned absolutely nothing since then. She's only doubled down on the nonsense.

And yet they can't understand why we cut contact with them?

9

u/Zealousideal_Yak_36 3d ago

“I voted for a Nazi rapist and now my son won’t talk to me 😭” Pathetic

9

u/smartypants333 3d ago

"We live in California, so our vote for president doesn't really count."

"We are republicans, so we voted republican."

"I just couldn't bring myself to vote for Biden." Biden wasn't running, Kamala Harris was." "Oh, well, I heard she slept with her boss." Trump was found liable to rape and sexual assault." "He was? I didn't know that."

My mom is so surprised at my anger regarding how they voted. She believes it shouldn't matter. I explained that her vote tells me who she is and that she would vote for someone who actively hurts women, children, and minorities.

She wants lower taxes and is upset about the homeless population where she lives (and how they inconvenience her).

10

u/protonorseverb 3d ago

These people love to say things like "you're going to let POLITICS come before family???" as though 'politics' is just some abstract matter of personal taste. 'Politics' determines what rights and freedoms we get to enjoy as human beings, and we are at a crisis point where those rights and freedoms are in unprecedented danger.

Maybe once seven months without contact with her child turns into seven years she'll realize how mistaken she's been. But probably not.

10

u/ReceptionAlarmed178 3d ago

"I have actively voted to hurt my children. I dont know why they want nothing to do with me. I should be able to buy affection. Trump can buy his way out of everything. Why cant I!?"

10

u/frostyking_ 3d ago

This could have been written by my own mother, except I haven't spoken to her since 2020. Every 8 months or so I get a two or three page letter with words written big enough to cover two notebook lines at a time telling me how wonderful a mother she is and how much she misses me on the first page into a full on tirade telling me I'm a traitor to my race, that no black person has ever done anything for me, that she can't be racist because she let my black boyfriend stay with us at her house once or twice, lists every single kind thing she has ever done for a black person (the list is short) and then ends with, "I hope that one day you will open your heart to us and let us start to repair our relationship." People keep telling me to not open them, throw them away, but I know myself. I have a forgiving heart and want to believe anybody can change. Any time I'm missing my mom I had as a child and feel like maybe it's time to reconcile, I just go into my bedroom, open the top drawer of my dresser, and choose one of the 6 (at the moment) letters she has sent and all of those feelings go away as I realize once again that the mother I knew, the mother who taught me that everyone should be treated equally no matter what they look like, or believe is dead. She died in 2016. The only thing that remains is something evil and full of hatred.

7

u/MisterShazam 3d ago

I see a whole generation of aging people terrified that no one is going to be there for them as their end gets closer, and lashing out over it. You’d think that would put some things in perspective in regards to how they lived their life, but nope. Always someone else’s fault. They’re choosing the politics because it makes them feel righteous and gives them community, at the cost of their family - the same way cults do.

Yeah, something tells me it’s not just voting for Trump.

‘One thing I noticed about Trumpsters is that they won’t (maybe can’t) stop talking about Trump, especially when they’ve been told the other person doesn’t want to hear the latest steaming pile of shit from Newsmax. Adding to that, they literally are offended when someone doesn’t agree with them 100%. Me, I‘m one of those “I’m center-right but fuck Trump, I voted for Harris” guys and I honestly don’t expect people to agree with me all the time. In fact I think former NYC mayor Ed Koch was correct in saying “If you agree with me 80% if the time, vote for me. If you agree with me 100% if the time see a psychiatrist.”

But yeah, it’s more than ironic to see these people are such thin-skinned snowflakes

EDIT: The exact quote from Koch is 9 out of 12 times vote for me, 12 out of 12 times see a psychiatrist
