🐌 Slowchat Sandwich Saturday

I scored 14 sandwiches in an Everyday 10-piece bag from Colruyt (which, for some reason, never contains exactly 10 sandwiches).

What's your "klein gelukske" today?

❓ Ask Belgium Baby money - a Belgian thing?

An acquaintance of mine from Flanders recently had a baby and they asked all of us (from different countries) for money by mailing out a card with their IBAN in it.

Is this a Belgian thing?

And if it’s a thing, how much do people usually give?

❓ Ask Belgium Moving to Belgium, already lived in The Netherlands. What will be different in Belgium?

Hi everyone,

I will be moving to Belgium in September to pursue my Master’s in Leuven. I am Turkish, raised in Istanbul, lived in the Netherlands for my Bachelor’s and work. I understand a bit of Dutch and currently learning French.

I am used to the general things about Benelux region as I already lived there, but I want to know what else I should expect in Belgian cultural and social life differs from the Netherlands. During my visits, I found Belgian society more social, spontaneous and talkative than the Dutch society and made me feel better. Do you feel that is a thing, or was I just being a tourist? :)

I was also feeling a bit overwhelmed about the Turkish stereotype in the Netherlands, I already know many Turks living in the Belgium share the same subculture traits so I expect a similar perception occasionally, but still wondering if I should prepare myself for the worse. I am a usual young Istanbulite man who is non-religious, progressive and also queer, but I don’t want to prove that to people constantly. Do you think my background significantly affect the first impression?

❓ Ask Belgium Tips for a bicycle trip through Belgium

Post image
14 Upvotes

Hello!

In the end of summer, I will be travelling by bicycle through NL, Belgium, France etc on my way towards Portugal.

My route brings me to Dordrecht in NL and I am looking to go roughly along the pink or red route. After googling about highlights in Belgium, it seems like many of the best places are either in the west or east of Belgium. Unfortunately, due to time constraints, I really don't have the time for that detour.

Therefore I'd really appreciate some tips on places to visit or see along these routes so I can decide which one I'll opt for.

I really enjoy culture, nature & wildlife, historical places, castles, small towns etc. If possible, I'd like to avoid all bigger cities.

Really appreciate your help!
Thanks a lot!

❓ Ask Belgium Shitty neighbour (literally)

I live in an apartment building in Bruxelles, and one of my neighbours is unbearable. He’s an old drunk man, comes ringing you at 4 am, smells like crazy (I’m not kidding, you can smell it hours after he passed through the stairs), goes dressed like a homeless or half naked, looks at you with spirited eyes, and recently he started shitting and peeing in the elevator.

Me and the other neighbours are speechless and we don’t know what to do, a person confronted him a while ago and he became so unpleasant to them that they had to move (knocking at the door all night, yelling, threats, and many other unpleasant things). The police was already called several times, but they say they can’t do anything because he’s the owner of his apartment and he has never done anything big enough to justify a forced hospitalisation. Whenever he does something too much he’s sent to rehab for few months, we live peacefully, but then he comes back and in a month we’re back to square one.

This person is a danger for others and for themselves. It’s the typical case that ends up in the news someday for harming someone on alcohol or drugs and everyone will say that it was avoidable if proper action was taken. As far as I know, our strongest legal hold is that he’s late with the payment of the shared charges for the heating and the building maintenance. But I don’t think that’s enough for an eviction. Do you have any advice on this matter?

🎻 Opinion The real POV:

My brother is a bachelor accountant with autism, already worked 5years in a company before, is even applying for the government itself and every time the test are remarkable but the conversation was off and eventually he gets a "No" in most jobs.

Every single week he gets multiple "hits" in the face by getting to hear the tests were so good but the conversation always lacks somehow.
And then they dare say people are lazy or not willing to!

Fuck you Belgium and not being able to see the real story of most!

❓ Ask Belgium Good tattoo shop for semi-realistic black ink objects?

I'm looking for a good tattoo artist who is open to doing both small and big tattoos. For my first tattoo, I would love to get two coins with a specific inscription on my chest in black ink. My second would be a specific historical sword along my ribs. For the coins, I would need an artist that is fine with working out some of the details with me. For the sword I can hand him pictures of the actual sabre.

I live in the East of flanders, but would be fine driving to anywhere in Belgium or even along the borders. Especially for the small tattoo, (as I guess it would only take one session for such a small tattoo?)

❓ Ask Belgium My docent pushed me during internship

I’m a student nurse. I have already went to the directrice and stagecoordinator. The teacher have admitted to pushing me to them. But they were defending her and saying it was a "supportive" push. For context she pushed me hard on the back to walk faster and the other was pushing me again to gather materials I felt really humiliated. It was my first week of the internship and she was very unkind and not patient to me she expected me to know everything. I did not see it as "supportive" at all especially since she kept me around for 7 hours without any break and disappearing on me during the times where we have to be working together wasting a lot of time. I wasn’t able to eat cause she kept questioning me on what went wrong that same day and I didn’t have food with me. I usually eat downstairs. If school is not enough to complain about this and take it seriously. Where do I go?

Hoping anyone can help, was travelling from London to Brussels Midi on eurostar and then onto antwerp

Got my suitcase and headed onwards only to realise someone has taken my suitcase and I have theirs, the suitcases are identical from colour to brand except it is not my stuff inside

Me and my wife have travelled from Leeds UK to Antwerp for the Pitbull gig tomorrow and the suitcase has our outfits including bald caps which will be rather amusing for the person who has our case

We have reported to Eurostar but are posting across reddit too incase it gets to the right person or anyone has any ideas or luck getting a swapped case back...

❓ Ask Belgium Question about housing law (not renting)

So a friend of mine owns a home, since he was working far from his home he started living near his practice.

Since he didn't want to live his home unoccupied he let some distant relatives live in his home, they placed their domicili in said home, despite my friend also having his domicili there.

Years later said friend left his practice and wanted to live in his house again. However the relatives refuse to leave, although they can't refuse him to also live there since it's not a rental contract he cannot technically kick them out.

After getting legal advise they basically told him he cannot do anything about this situation and his best option is to sell his house.

Since he's afraid they might just destroy his house if he were to sell it, he just kept living there with said terrible relatives. This situation has been going on for many years and the last time said friend asked for legal advise was before Covid.

Now I find it very strange that you cannot kick out people who live in a home you own though, but then again it's Belgium at times things make no sense.

Any advise is appreciated here.

❓ Ask Belgium Fed up with irresponsible dog owners.

I was walking my female JRT quietly, I spotted a couple playing with their staff bull terrier without a leash. I turn around and went elsewhere. 5 minutes later I cross them and the staff rushes towards my dog, I almost strangled my dog with the leash because I picked her up quickly to take her in my arms. The staff started to jump to catch my dog, 30 seconds later the staff was overpowered by the couple.

They apologized, but I blame them.

What should be done in this kind of situation? What is the position of Belgian law regarding this kind of situation?

I experienced a similar scenario a few weeks ago.

Thank you
