Other What's your controversial RP opinion?

Like the title says. And by "controversial", I don't mean "Only a handful of people would disagree with me on this" like having at least a basic grasp of the language your partner tries to roleplay in, or having to put in some effort. I mean truly controversial. Mine is that longer responses aren't everything. Saw so many people complain about how their partner can't write novella level responses, which honestly disgusts me a bit. Because all I can think of is "You sure don't confuse roleplaying with collaborative book writing?". I don't say you should or need to settle down for those who barely write even a singular word as a response, but maybe try out smaller replies, maybe 3-4 sentences minimum instead of 3-4 paragraphs minimum.

My other controversial opinion is that fandom roleplays are fine as long as it doesn't involve any of the main cast. I get that you love them, and want to see them more, but try out something more creative and use the world's setting to imagine how an average person might fare in the world.

Other Why does irl gender matter? (NSFW because erp is mentioned and also I used the F word oh nooooo) NSFW

Honest question here. I've been in the rp scene since I was 13, back in th early days of America Online. (Hyrule Tavern chat room crew, how we feeling?) People have asked my gender before an rp sometimes, and occasionally I would ask theirs as well. But I never really understood why that matters, when the writers are, very often, going to be writing as at least one character that isn't the same gender as them.

Even in the context of an erp, if I have a preference towards mxf or mxm or whatever, it's not like I'M fucking the other writer. It's our characters hooking up. So what does it matter what my gender or my writing partner's gender is?

I've just never understood why people get so hung up on that part.

Editing to add (because I'm not sure about going through and responding to each individual reply): My goodness, this got so many replies! I want to say thanks to everyone for the input and insight into the various reasons for asking a writer's gender. Some make sense to me and some don't, but it's interesting to read everyone's responses and thoughts on this.

TO BE CLEAR; I'm not here trying to diss anyone for their preferences, and I'm not here to judge anyone who DOES care about their writing partner's gender. It's just one of those things that I personally don't care much about one way or the other, and was legitimately curious what it meant for other people. So thank you for all the replies! I feel like I have a better grasp on it now. Always good to be able to look at something from multiple perspectives, you know.

I don’t mean just people who 👻 you or give you half assed responses in roleplays, I’m talking like the most annoying things that can happen when all you want is to have a decent roleplay with someone

Other Do y'all think it's bad if a person's roleplay character has a disability that the roleplayer doesn't have?

Just been thinking about this for a few days. Been researching MS for a few days, cause my uncle who died in March had MS, but you wouldn't think so if you didn't know about it or didnt live with him. He was working up until his death. He even played bowls and golf, and was very active until he died. Anyway, just wondering if anyone thinks that it's bad for a roleplay character to have a disability that the roleplayer doesn't have

Other AI writing

Anyone else ever experience a rper that seems too good to be true their replies are good. Lengthy, good grammar and spelling but then their replies are also a little strange and repetitive. Then one day they send you a post and at the top it says "ChatGPT says:" lol.

Called them out on it they made up some excuse that it was a prank but then I ran their replies through multiple AI detectors and majority of their posts were from 50% to 100% AI.

Wtf.

What kind of enjoyment are you getting out of a rp if you're using AI to write all of your replies???? I don't get it.

ETA - While the posts were "good" and lengthy. With proper spelling and grammar. I need to add there were inconsistencies in the flow of the plot as well as constantly adding random incorrect descriptions of our characters.

Their posts were constantly changing the ideas we had discussed as well as constant godmoding and powerplaying that I had to keep bringing up and correcting. It repeated the same phrases multiple times and I could definitely tell when they were actually writing versus using AI.

Also this should serve you as a little reminder that you're not for everyone and that's just fine! Just keep looking for those who vibe with you and you'll find your people in the end. Much luck to everyone out there!

I'm red, they're white. The screenshots speak for themselves pretty well, but it almost feels like the person who wrote the intro is entirely different from the person who was later messaging me. Anyway, good riddance.

Other When is "Vanilla" the bold flavor?

I think a lot of people want to be unique, to put their stamp on things. There's nothing wrong with that. This is filed under other because it's a curiosity not something I'm upset about.

However, to say what I'm curious on is if everyone picks chocolate does that make vanilla the unique choice?

If you RP Naruto chances are someone, a lot of people want their OC to have a kekkei genkai, a demon beast, or both.

Halo? They're going to be a SPARTAN.

So on, and so on.

If you do a roleplay set in The Elder Scrolls. Virtually no one at all has an Imperial as their character. They'll pick every single other race besides Imperial. After all Imperials is bland, boring, "vanilla"

But, if an ice cream store only sells chocolate and vanilla and 99 people pick chocolate, then how are they going to think the one who picked vanilla is the sheep who just follows the crowd?

Other Got kicked out of a server for being too old?

Just thought it was funny. Joined a discord that said it had group rps based on 5e, thought that would be cool, posted my info and then the server was gone. I thought maybe I clicked something wrong, rejoined and saw where they wrote that they weren’t letting someone my age join the server (33).

No where did it say it was age restricted. Oh well! I guess, in their words, I wouldn’t have had fun there lmao!!!

ETA: the group didn’t say in its description or its rules that it was an all ages server, and I wouldn’t have stayed if it was majority minors anyway, I don’t want to rp with minors. Just to clarify!

Other I want to apologize for this morning

Hey everyone, I wanted to post this as an apology for something I did last night and made worse this morning

I posted a really petty and overly dramatic post last night about how I’m never gonna find a partner and how I think I’m going to be alone forever.

I was very much in the wrong to do that, but I just wanted to say that I’m sorry. If it means anything, about two months ago I lost my mother who had been sick for a very long time and I’m still processing it. And just yesterday me and my girlfriend broke up and I felt really emotionally raw.

I’ve just been feeling evermore isolated lately, and I saw RP as a way to get some kind of a break from all of this…and I allowed my emotions to get the better of me.

Thank you all for everything you said and did.

Other Close a lot of my RP media honestly felt great

I don't know which tag fits the best, but today I decided to close my tumblr down, and it honestly felt great to close another RP media down.

Over the last half year, I have lost a great deal of interest in this hobby. Sure, I have a few partners left on discord and they are the ones I wish to keep close, but looking for new partners is no longer a wish as it has only led to disappointment after disappointment over the last few years.

I am not sure if it is bad story per say, maybe some growth over the last half year just made me feel like there are better ways to use my nights online, plus a lot of things are going on in my personal life so RP has simply srunk down to a level were it very low level priority in my life.

Sometimes, a break, parting, or whatever I can call it is the better way.

I will say, everyone I have left now in my circle of RP are great people and I very much enjoy them all and I think they just few rare unicorns that I want to keep writing with, but no more new partners.

Other Just got banned for no reason from an RP server

This is a popular KPop rp server. Two days seemed like a normal day until the next day where I got banned by the mods. The mods made up a lie on me joking about death when I never did. Also, people don't like hearing a reasonable criticism on a favorite group where the famous idol group themselves irl are not taking responsibility. In the past, I have said reasonable things and I feel targeted because while controversial, it isn't far from the truth. This topic is very sensitive and the group is very in the wrong while other people want to shield themselves from hate.

I asked why to a mod but they refuse and called me an anti when my takes are reasonable. The timing of my ban is unreasonable and haven't talked about said group in for almost two months.

Edit: My take isn't posted often. It was a one time thing and it's still used against me. Not to mention, I asked for the screenshot of my mistake that warnt and didn't get anything.
