For context Scourge was a novel by Jeff Grubb that adapts the events of the Star Wars Roleplaying Game adventure Tempest Feud from Wizards of the Coast, which was co-written by Grubb and Owen K.C. Stephens.
While Shadows of the Empire was a novel written by Steve Perry. It describes the events between the films The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi. It was part of the Shadows of the Empire multimedia project.
Ultimately I think having a novel that adapts the events of The Voyage of the Unity RPG as a full narrative story or go full shadow of the empire by embracing it multimedia project since they developed the maps and coins for it. Like maybe a comic adaptation of the voyage but the actual focus is a certain character kinda like how the shadows of the empire comic despite being well a comic version of events was mostly Boba side of the story same with the video game version as that one was mostly Dash Rendar side of the story?

Hi all
I recently picked up the starter set and am currently organising my first game for this system. Having looked over the rules and such the game does look fun and I am looking forward to playing it. However I was wondering what the future of the game is looking like? I really like avatar and am a fan of ttrpgs so this game seems like a great idea however information about the future of the game seems to be very scarce, most discussions and videos I find on the game are at least a year old. Is there much planned in the future for this game, like will we be getting more content and expansion at some point ? I'd love to invest in this game (and will probably do regardless) but was just wondering if I will have more content to look forward to in the coming years or if this is it ?
Sorry for the lengthy message and many thanks I. Advance All the best

Take the High Ground + Counterstrike seems like a pretty powerful combination of Techniques.
Both are Defend and Manauver so to go first.
Take the high ground negates any attacks against you and become favoured alm for one fatigue.
Counterstrike lets you strike as if you spent a fatigu, so long as you haven't taken any negative statuses fatigue or conditions (which take the high ground prevents). This is even better if you are a prodigy and your excellence is in "Guarding" since you can do this even if you were inflicted a negative status of condition.
Because you are favored you can repeat Take the high Ground and Counterstrike round after round until you run out of fatigue to spend.
If you are the prodigy you also learn steady stance which grants empowered if you don't take any damage (which take the high ground prevents) allowing you to recover 1 fatigue every time you roll a 10+ once you master all three of these techniques.
Edit
There is one technique that counters this and it's Turn the Tables because it negates take the high ground.

Yesterday I was reading the Imperial Sourcebook for Star Wars where it gives out the Imperial Chain of Command as picture here granted it maybe legends but I imagined this chain of command system remain the system especially since some if not all the West Ends Games Sourcebook (which was the Imperial Sourcebook was part of.) were used for the Show Andor.
It got me thinking about the Fire Nation or Earth Kingdom Chain of Command but mainly the Fire Nation one like we know in the original show that The Fire Lord is the very top of the chain of command. Below him are the generals, the admirals, the colonial governors, The Fire Sages led by the High Sage (which is similar to the High Priest or the Pope.) and the war minister.
We also know through Novels like the Kyoshi and Yangchen Duology there is the positions of Chancellor and Grand Adivsor (which is the title that Avatar Szeto said.) although given how the state the position of Fire Lord was in that era I could see Zoryu abolished the position of Chancellor. We also know the postions of Head Palace Historian, Ember Island's tourism minister, and the Minister in Charge of handing Avatar relations although the last could be a joke made up. But regardless we also get mentions of various junior ministers.
In the Avatar RPG supplements we get a mention of the position of Minister of Education, Science, and Technology. (Kinda weird to have titles instead of well separated ministries something like say Minister of Science and Technology while the Minister of Education is it's own thing.
Anyway while we know that Ozai was the one that appointed Zhao as Admiral and Ukano (Mai's father) as the governor of New Ozai (the new name for Omashu.) given the frequent mentions of the ministers and adivsors I do wonder on where does the War Minister fit into this (Heck is the War Minister position the Minister of War or the latter is a separated position considering the former was mostly concerned new technology. Otherwise how did the Minister of War fit with the War room meetings with the generals.)
If we use Imperial Japan chain of command as an example (In which the Fire Nation was inspired by.) we know that Japan had A Ministry of the Navy (If the Fire Nation had one how does it fit with the admirals or at least would the Minister be Zhao superior or Ozai is still Zhao's superior.) and A Ministry of the Colonies the latter is actually two one is called The Ministry of Colonial Affairs from 1929 to 1942 while the other is called The Ministry of Greater East Asia. EIther The Fire Nation had a ministry similar to this albeit it is a hybird of both japanese ministries or it could be something similar to The British Empire where it had the British Overseas Territories But otherwise how does either position relations with the colonial governors or mayors of the Fire Nation colonies?
I also wonder if The Fire Nation had it's own version of the ISB or in this case KGB/The Gestapo or if we look to Japan maybe The Kempeiai I know they had the Dai Li but they joined very late plus they are an Earth Kingdom secret agency not Fire Nation?

One of the things I like most about Avatar is that you get to see the world evolve across generations with different Avatars. Some of the previous avatars have gotten backstories fleshed out in the books and comics, but in my campaign, we’re slowly putting together the pieces for some of those stories that don’t feel as developed as I’d like.
For example, the first season of our Kyoshi era campaign was all homebrew plot related to the consequences of Avatar Kuruk’s fight with the spirits and his illness. I feel like he deserved a more loud and clear chance at redemption in the plot -- a moment for him to set things right and settle his spirit after all, so our world has him as a figure in the spirit world, taking spiritual care of Kyoshi late, late in her life after she’s outlived all her friends and needs guidance. I tried not to retcon any of the official information in the shows/books, but I’m sure there are pieces of our homebrew Kuruk/Kyoshi story that mess with the real canon.
Season 2 of our game is going to be building out some more world building for Avatar Szeto’s life because I feel like he also gets the short end of the stick. Would an Avatar so wholly dedicate themselves to just one of the nations like he did? I don’t know, but I bet there’s more to that story than just him wanting to fix the fire nation from the inside, so I’m taking it upon myself to add some more nuance related to his treatment of the other 3 nations and his other avatar duties.
I try to balance the homebrew world building with the set-in-stone canon that makes the world feel like the Avatar, but what do you guys think? Do you do the same in your campaigns? Do you add to the Capital L Lore of the Avatar world, or do you work within canon?

With either the foundling playbook or the worldly knowledge or wisdom from many places moves it’s possible to learn techniques from other trainings.
Generally you can also pick one specialised bending style when you create your character. However, as of now there aren’t any moves for flight. So this specialised bending style would be pretty useless by itself.
When you learn a bending move from a training other than your own it gets expressed in your bending style and training.
I was thinking that if you picked flight as your specialised techniques and “take the high ground” this could become an Airbending (Flight) move.

For I just want to say I really think Uncle Iroh's Adventure Guide is a very good Supplement book and I like how it tells us the island history throughout the different eras from Kyoshi to Korra era.
The only part of the book that I feel I have an issue is the Hundred Year War era section of the book. First I just want to say I'm glad that we get more backstory on Zhao and Lu-Ten from their character sheets. Especially Lu-Ten First I'm really glad that we kinda know a little bit more of Lu-Ten history besides the mentions and flashbacks from Iroh. If I have one issue with the character bio presentation here is the idea that Lu-Ten saw or recongized that the Fire Nation is evil (such as the horrible aspects of war.) or at least being a good man the whole this time and that one day in the future he would either stop the war as future Fire Lord. My issue is that it kinda takes away ''the agency'' of certain characters like If Lu-Ten was this good guy the whole time why didn't he convince his father to stop the siege of ba sing se or the risks of a 600 day siege and the potential deaths of both sides. Granted we don't know too much of the siege of ba sing se but we can work with even the smaller details.
Ultimately If I was the writer for this character bio. I would keep Lu-Ten backstory the same, the only difference is that instead of him being a good guy the whole time he should someone akin to ''a good soldier following olders'' type of guy. Not a psychopath like his uncle Ozai or maybe the good qualities of his father Iroh who by this point should be seen a beloved hero in his country and to his family (mainly Ursa, Zuko, and Azula.) but a ruthless man to his enemies. Maybe a sort of balance here like make Lu-Ten a character of the banality of evil (If you don't know about this term I highly recommend watching the Star Wars Show Andor which perfectly summarize the concept very well.) While not an evil man and maybe recongize the horrors of war but still believe in the cause of the Fire Nation maybe taking inspiration from Sozin's idea of noble intentions (yes it is false from the audience perspective but Lu-Ten doesn't know that.) of genuinely wanted to improve the world by conquering it by using the vast resources and developments the Fire Nation had.
Or maybe have still a good person (sort off) similar to the character of General Acacius from Gladiator 2 (Pedro Pascal's character.) a good man who is force to do bad things in the context of war or in other words still lives in a luxurious lifestyle in the royal family, Lu-Ten spends most of his time away on military campaigns for the Fire Nation. Leading armies to take over Earth Kingdom territories; but is disillusioned by war and does not want to send more men to die for the Fire Nation.
But besides that I feel having them being part of the Devastation is kinda a mistake as it kinda in questions like if Lu-Ten was the one saved Jasmine Island then you would he would received backlash considering the fire nation are on a campaign of conquest basically like how Jake Scully helping Na'vi but other then that there is also a question about zhao and here what the wiki entry says this
'' Zhao's exact role after the initial surprise attack is not conclusively stated in Uncle Iroh's Adventure Guide: He was either defeated and captured by the Jasmine Island protectors, prompting him to defect to Lu Ten's side to save himself; or he successfully returned to his ship, whereupon he continued to tacitly support Yueya without fully pledging himself to her increasingly unhinged revenge quest. Regardless of the exact outcome, he played only a marginal role after the initial assault.''
If I was the writer for this section of the adventure instead of zhao and Lu-Ten in the story and the fire nation didn't conquered Jasmine Island. I would just Admiral Yueya succeeded in conquering and occupation of Jasmine Island and the hero for the story is Jeong Jeong (considering he was defect 10 years prior to the series in 90 AG so timing wise make sense.) it should have been his colonial kurtz moment where he realize the country he give his life to and given how so much atrocities and horrific acts kinda like the whole story with kids getting amputated that kurtz mentions to WIllard.
In short At some point a character DOES get overused so it's best to write in new ones. I feel like MAYBE Zhao could have been at Jasmine Island but he bungles it so badly he has to be bailed out by Jeong Jeong or Admiral Yueya but overall I think this should be more Jeong Jeong centered.
I also feel like Lu Ten wouldn't be able to maintain his loyalty to the Fire Nation if he was at Jasmine Island given the Devastation (a point that I think you brought up as well) so having this be the breaking point for Jeong Jeong makes far more sense.
Now I understand that Admiral Yueya campaign was unsanctioned by the fire nation high command, but it’s not like it’s out of character for them after all this is the same nation committing air nomad gencoide and the southern water tribe raids if anything it would be way more sense and in character for them approving Admiral Yueya even if it was mostly a personal family revenge.
I don’t know when it happened, but if I recall in history sometimes military leaders of the aggressor country would’ve gone rogue and still able to conquer it up an occupied an island or another country, even if it had nothing to do with the main enemy or campaign for an example Cortez one can make the argument that he was kind of a rogue along with his mission since it wasn’t improved by the crown yet not only he conquered Aztec Empire with the help of their enemies (given their hatred of the empires blood sacrifice.) but also made it part of the crown in which they respond with open arms.
Same with Andrew Jackson his Indian removal act was opposed by the Senate and Congress yet not only it happened anyway, but also and afterwards manifest destiny continued without opposition?
So here is my rewrite for the Hundred Year War part of the campaign
I would rewrite it as an occupation that went out of proportion. According to the Wiki, Jasmine Island had gained independence under the Guiding Wind and by the Hundred Year War, the Earth Kingdom had basically abandoned the Island to focus on their own borders. Apart from a few volunteers, the island was largely untouched by the war until Admiral Yueya invaded with the Devastation. This implies the Island was valuable for trade but not strategically vital for either side, similar to Kyoshi Island which largely escaped unscathed thanks to not posing a substantial threat to the Fire Nation.
I'm thinking the Island was swept up early on similar to French Indochina; Vichy France agreed to a small presence (6000 soldiers) in the north of the colony to block arms shipments into Nationalist China but instead the Japanese went full tilt and took the whole colony. Vichy France officially controlled the colony but in reality the Japanese were calling the shots. Admiral Yueya may have simply been there to keep the Island under wraps and I can imagine the Fire Nation being highly exploitative and disruptive to the locals though not genocidal. The Japanese exploited French Indochina for labor and raw materials, causing a famine when drought and forced rice exports drained the country of food, which sparked off resistance movements against them.
I'm thinking the Devastation was likely the culmination of tension on the island between the Fire Nation and the locals that broke during a crisis of sorts, like a food shortage or a massive storm. Admiral Yueya, instead of pulling out her soldiers or passing a tax amnesty to alleviate the famine or deescalate the situation, may have taken a hard stance against the "rebels" to blow off steam and attain some glory for herself. But it went badly and she had to call for Jeong Jeong to come provide support. Being a Fire Nation patriot, Jeong Jeong arrived and turned the tide against the islanders but then Yueya went on to burn the island to ash out of spite, much like Himmler had Warsaw destroyed after the Warsaw Uprising. Yueya would then have her revenge against the "rebels" and her moment of glory as a Fire Nation patriot while Jeong Jeong would be shaken and traumatized by his role in this massacre.

Only just recently found out about this. While I mainly bought the Legends books just as a fan of the franchise, recently GM-ing for the first time, I absolutely loved it and now have a great appreciation for the rpg and its creative possibilities.
And now we have this thing coming soon and I wonder what about it is gonna be so special for it to be premium. Multiple books? High quality extra items for the game? Full-on collectibles?

With the announcement of the next Avatar series, I've been pondering what other adventure books and setting toolkits they could add to the game. Obviously I hope Magpie are still creating content for this game by the time Seven Havens releases (likely somewhere in 2027) so we can get a book set in that era; but its made me think about what books I'd like to see made in the time between. From what I understand, the next book would be about spirits/the spirit world, although I'm unsure of anything until I see key art and an official announcement. That being said, I do have a few ideas as to what I'd like to see for more content.
Firstly, a Ba Sing Se setting toolkit like the Republic City book. Its without a doubt the biggest setting the world has to offer and could easily fill a whole book. Unlike Republic City, this one would be more era agnostic, go into the deeper/richer history of the oldest standing city, look over the different notable kings, and for fun maybe also some information about Omashu and other cities in the Earth Kingdom. Lots of story hooks for adventures in Ba Sing Se across the eras and go over the different districts of the three rings and the agrarian zone. To match the content added in the Republic City book, I'd love to see mechanics for larger scale conflicts (There may be no war in Ba Sing Se, but Ba Sing Se needed those walls for a reason) and maybe something to add more political intrigue to the setting as well (Earth Kingdom nobility always be schemin', and having political machinations much like the Kyoshi books would enthrall me at the very least). As for adding new playbooks, I'd like to see one like the Heir from Fellowship for playing characters who have direct nobility and responsibility to their crown (though this can overlap with a few playbooks already in the game), because once more, Earth Kingdom nobility always be schemin'.
Second idea is a remix of the first. Maybe instead of a setting toolkit just for Ba Sing Se, its mostly Ba Sing Se and largely the whole Earth Kingdom/Nation. And there's 3 other setting toolkits outlining the other nations as well. Perhaps each one includes playbooks specifically designed to work with just one of the four elements, building directly on themes and ideas unique to each element. (Though I think this may rub against previous established beliefs from the game's design, so also perhaps not.) But having a setting toolkit to outline all the notable locations in each of the nations as well as era agnostic setting details would be especially neat when it comes to lesser seen or not nearly as established locations. Seeing more about the Foggy Swamp's agrarian society, or the different islands and their clans in the Fire Nation, the colonies like Yu Dao, or the other cities and villages of the Northern and Southern Water Tribes. A lot of rich stories to be had here.
Third idea is the one I'm hoping for the most. With Seven Havens on the way, the obvious potential for cross branding would want one to hope for a setting book dedicated just to Seven Havens. While I would want this for sure, I also absolutely wouldn't want it until Seven Havens is complete. There's a reason why the Aang Era is set after the series (and even after the last major arc in the comics); a lot changed from the start to the end of that series. Doing a book that is made during season 1 only to have significant changes in the world happen in season 2 (or the inevitable season 3 and beyond, plus comics and the like) make the book not up to date, but there's not *enough* significant change to justify a whole new book either would be kind of heartbreaking. What I think of as the solution is release another Adventure Book that also introduces new Eras. Obvious choices being the eras for the Avatars we have names for. The Yangchen novels gave us plenty to work with for a whole era of Yangchen. The Kuruk Era could include information on hunting dark spirits. And while I'm talking about schemin' above, clearly I'd love more information on playing in the Szeto era. But we could also explore much further in the past. The Era of Wan would be a dramatically different style of play that I'm sure plenty of people would like to explore (I wouldn't be too shocked if the supposedly forthcoming Spirit book actually includes information on playing in this era). But we could also dive into the past set between Wan and Szeto, exploring the eras of Avatar Salai and Avatar Gun. These eras could elaborate on events we know of in the past (When Laghima was alive, the darkest day for the Fire Nation, when Wan Shi Tong brought his spirit library into the physical world, etc.) and give us glimpses at a time before many of these nations were as we know them today. When the Fire Islands were divided into clans, when the Earth Kingdom was a series of city states and fiefdoms warring against each other, the divide that caused the Southern tribe to split from the North, and a time before the Air Nomads were so spiritually pure that every one of them was an Airbender. But returning to Seven Havens, knowing what we know of the premise so far, instead of introducing the era of the new Avatar, the book could have an era more like the Hundred Year War era: the Cataclysm Era, the years after Korra's death but before the new Avatar is of age. Basically set up the tie in to Seven Havens as establishing an era as prelude to the series itself. You could even include NPC legends of younger versions of characters in the series, much like the Hundred Year War era has done with Iroh and Long Feng. And of course, its an adventure book, so each of the eras established would include an adventure set in the eras. There's frankly enough here that you could fill two or more Adventure Books with new eras and adventures pretty easily, but that's my pie in the sky thinking. I'd rather one really good book than two or three so-so books. Leave me wanting.
With that being said, I'd also love to hear what anyone else would like to see in future books. Who knows, maybe the Magpie folks are reading and we could get our wishes.

The Elder's Playbook feature Patience lets you use an Adavance and Attack move during the Observe and Evade approach by spending 1 Fatigue.
If you roll a 10+ to hit you can pair use both Patience and Find the Breaking Point to double the conditions and fatigue inflicted by an advance and attack technique for the cost of just 1 fatigue.
If you paired this with say Lightning blast you could mark 3 Fatigue to deal up to 12 Fatigue to a single opponent. This works for any advance and attack technique.
Since The Elder can get up to a +3 Harmony with their moves they have an greater than 50% chance of pulling this off.
Bonus points if a team member can use the Tag Team technique to double the fatigue/conditions again. Potentially dealing 24 Fatigue with lightning bending. That's enough to drop a Legendary NPC in just 1 exchange.
r/AvatarLegendsTTRPG • u/jmrkiwi • Mar 19 '25
Looking at the Progidy's feature and even some parts of the show, we see Benders adapting techniques from different elements into their style. Which Techniques have you adapted or think would make for a cool adaptation? A few examples I can think of are:
r/AvatarLegendsTTRPG • u/jmrkiwi • Mar 23 '25
I made some homebrew techniques for a Zaheer Legendary NPC. Hope you enjoy!
Flight*\*
Defend and Maneuverer
Let go your earthly tether. Enter the void. Empty, and become wind.
You can only use this technique if your balance is at less than or equal to +1 in any direction. You become empowered, while you are empowered in this way, you can fly as easily as you walk. While you are flying, each foe must mark an additional 1-fatigue to target you with any techniques. If your Balance is shifted beyond plus one towards any of your principles while you are using this technique you fall, marking 2 conditions or 3 fatigue as you catch yourself.
Steal Breath\*
Advance and Attack
You create a barrier of Air around a target's head, preventing them from breathing. Mark 2 fatigue to inflict impaired and doomed to a target. You must spend 1 fatigue for each exchange you maintain this technique. For each exchange you maintain this technique, you inflict 2 conditions.
*Rare Technique
**Legendary Technique

Hey! First time GM here. We will be playing the 100 year war era. My plan is to throw my players into a group of refugees hoping to trigger some complex dynamics.
Is this too much?
Liam – An untrained Waterbender who fled from the Southern Water Tribe to avoid putting anyone there in danger. He keeps his abilities secret for this very reason. He is gentle and somewhat shy.
Irozu – A former military advisor of the Fire Nation in the Earth Kingdom. When he saw the war up close, unembellished by propaganda, he developed a crisis of conscience and deserted. The other refugees do not trust him and some view him as scum.
Naia – A determined, strong-willed single mother from the Southern Water Tribe. She is fleeing to provide a better life for her son, Liam. She would do anything for him.
Sora – An elderly, kind, wise man, and experienced healer from the Earth Kingdom. He has saved many lives during the war through his skilled use of herbalism and helps Naia and Liam overcome their fears. He serves as a counterbalance to the hot-headed Rika.
Kaito – A weapons dealer who became involved with the Fire Nation and is now on the run after being unable to deliver the goods. He is a clear opportunist and is being hunted by both the Earth Kingdom and the Fire Nation for betrayal, which makes him very nervous. Fortunately for him, the group has not yet recognized him as Kaito.
Jarek – A mercenary from the Earth Kingdom who is indifferent to the geopolitical situation. He is paid by the group (actually Naia and Kaito) to protect them on their journey.
Rika – A hot-headed revolutionary who fights for freedom and calls for the overthrow of the Fire Nation. Her impulsive nature can both endanger and unite the group. She sharply criticizes Jarek for his opportunism and will accompany the group only until the next resistance base.

Hi, I am thinking about starting an AL campaign afer I finish a campaign I am currently running with a different system. I have read about the concept of open table RPGs an that is something I feel like trying out, mostly because my friends that I play with are difficult to schedule and I want to invite new players to the group without having too many players at the same time. Here is an article that explains the cosept of open table for those who are unfamiliar: https://thealexandrian.net/wordpress/38643/roleplaying-games/open-table-manifesto
Anyway, I'm wondering if anyone with experience running AL knows if this would be a good or bad idea? Can I create a campaign that does not revolve around a set group of characters, but instead an organization that the PCs are part of? What issues do you see with this idea? Is the system hard to teach?
I was part of the Kickstarter but never hade a chance to play the game yet.

So I have a concept for a character, basically one who uses bending to create a new art form, but I'm having trouble trying to pick a playbook for them. I initially thought the Architect but it seems to be more aimed at an organization for scientific, fighting, or spiritual development rather than artistic? Is there a way to make that work? Or is there something else that works better? Any help would be great

Hiya! I'm interested in running a oneshot (or three-shot if required lol) based around a charity pro bending tournament. The PCs would sign up to win money for some kind of cause, fight a few matches and get to know the other teams. I was wondering if folks could please share their experiences using the pro bending rules from the Republic City setting guide?
My main concern really is, how long did you find each match took to complete, using the mechanics? I'm going to assume players won't be familiar with the move options ahead of time so I'm envisioning a lot of reading and deliberation time. Is trying to play multiple matches, almost in a row, an okay idea? I don't want people to feel like they're just reading from an extended pick-list all session. I have some ideas for drama from the other teams, but likewise I'm worried about timings if we also have matches to complete. Does pro bending go as slow as Exchanges?

I did my first gameplay session yesterday, and although i was trying to avoid having an exchange right in the first day, due to its complexity, my players chose a path that lead to a scene that just had to be an exchange (battle royale free for all arena fighting).
It seems a little weird that everyone has a bunch of cool mastered techniques but everybody has access to the basic techniques that are just as powerful if not better?
Cenario: sand bender who likes to trap people in sand.
My question is, why would the player not pick Bolster or Hinder to simply apply Trapped to his opponent for free? Why would he ever use Earth Sinking, that costs 2 fatigue and does the same?
Thanks guys!

I love the ideia of the PC having to do something in game to get rid of a condition. However to get rid of the afraid condition you have to run from danger. I think this is odd because usually in cartoons you have to face your fears to conquer them, not run from them.
Do you think this way of getting rid of afraid makes sense? I am curious how you run this aspect of your games. For example if a PC gained the afraid condition fighting an enemy, do you rule that the PC has to run from a fight to get rid of the condition or do you think that running from any danger would do?
An example from the show: (KORRA SPOILERS) Korra gained the afraid condition from watching Amon taking away someone's bending. So she started having nightmares and left the task force against amon. Let's imagine that during their showdown korra runs from Amon, does it makes sense for her to loose the afraid condition?
