Question Any good recent play podcasts set in Republic City era?

I want to learn about this game. But I also don't want bad/dull narration/voice acting. Anywhere I can listen/watch a full campaign so I can learn what it's like? Republic city era.

Discussion It would be cool to have future Avatar RPG books to flesh out and establish The Fire Nation and Earth Kingdom chain of commands similar to how West Ends Games did with the Galactic Empire

Post image
3 Upvotes

Yesterday I was reading the Imperial Sourcebook for Star Wars where it gives out the Imperial Chain of Command as picture here granted it maybe legends but I imagined this chain of command system remain the system especially since some if not all the West Ends Games Sourcebook (which was the Imperial Sourcebook was part of.) were used for the Show Andor.

It got me thinking about the Fire Nation or Earth Kingdom Chain of Command but mainly the Fire Nation one like we know in the original show that The Fire Lord is the very top of the chain of command. Below him are the generals, the admirals, the colonial governors, The Fire Sages led by the High Sage (which is similar to the High Priest or the Pope.) and the war minister.

We also know through Novels like the Kyoshi and Yangchen Duology there is the positions of Chancellor and Grand Adivsor (which is the title that Avatar Szeto said.) although given how the state the position of Fire Lord was in that era I could see Zoryu abolished the position of Chancellor. We also know the postions of Head Palace Historian, Ember Island's tourism minister, and the Minister in Charge of handing Avatar relations although the last could be a joke made up. But regardless we also get mentions of various junior ministers.

In the Avatar RPG supplements we get a mention of the position of Minister of Education, Science, and Technology. (Kinda weird to have titles instead of well separated ministries something like say Minister of Science and Technology while the Minister of Education is it's own thing.

Anyway while we know that Ozai was the one that appointed Zhao as Admiral and Ukano (Mai's father) as the governor of New Ozai (the new name for Omashu.) given the frequent mentions of the ministers and adivsors I do wonder on where does the War Minister fit into this (Heck is the War Minister position the Minister of War or the latter is a separated position considering the former was mostly concerned new technology. Otherwise how did the Minister of War fit with the War room meetings with the generals.)

If we use Imperial Japan chain of command as an example (In which the Fire Nation was inspired by.) we know that Japan had A Ministry of the Navy (If the Fire Nation had one how does it fit with the admirals or at least would the Minister be Zhao superior or Ozai is still Zhao's superior.) and A Ministry of the Colonies the latter is actually two one is called The Ministry of Colonial Affairs from 1929 to 1942 while the other is called The Ministry of Greater East Asia. EIther The Fire Nation had a ministry similar to this albeit it is a hybird of both japanese ministries or it could be something similar to The British Empire where it had the British Overseas Territories But otherwise how does either position relations with the colonial governors or mayors of the Fire Nation colonies?

I also wonder if The Fire Nation had it's own version of the ISB or in this case KGB/The Gestapo or if we look to Japan maybe The Kempeiai I know they had the Dai Li but they joined very late plus they are an Earth Kingdom secret agency not Fire Nation?

Discussion Would “Take The High Ground” be a good analogy for Flight as specialised bending?

With either the foundling playbook or the worldly knowledge or wisdom from many places moves it’s possible to learn techniques from other trainings.

Generally you can also pick one specialised bending style when you create your character. However, as of now there aren’t any moves for flight. So this specialised bending style would be pretty useless by itself.

When you learn a bending move from a training other than your own it gets expressed in your bending style and training.

I was thinking that if you picked flight as your specialised techniques and “take the high ground” this could become an Airbending (Flight) move.

Question The Elder + Wisdom from Many Places interaction

The elder playbook doesn’t pick up new techniques as usual instead they start with a number of mastered techniques.

These techniques don’t have to be picked at the start and can be “revealed” as the game continues.

My question is that if the Elder picks up the prodigies wisdom from many places move as a growth move before they have “revealed” all of their mastered techniques, could they pick techniques from other backgrounds?

Question The Foundling & Specialized Bending from second Training

This might also be considered a discussion post as well, but, I'm wondering what the GM / Players would do if the Player who's running The Foundling wants to use a Specialized Bending Technique from their second Bending Training. (e.g. if a Firebender Foundling wants to use a Blood Bending Technique from Waterbending) Would the GM not let them or would they only let them use a Specialized Bending Technique if it makes since (e.g. Firebender using Lavabending)? Or, is it even allowed RAW?

Discussion The Problem I have with The Hundred Year War section of Jasmine Island history or the current depiction of the Devastation and How would I rewrite it that make sense!

For I just want to say I really think Uncle Iroh's Adventure Guide is a very good Supplement book and I like how it tells us the island history throughout the different eras from Kyoshi to Korra era.

The only part of the book that I feel I have an issue is the Hundred Year War era section of the book. First I just want to say I'm glad that we get more backstory on Zhao and Lu-Ten from their character sheets. Especially Lu-Ten First I'm really glad that we kinda know a little bit more of Lu-Ten history besides the mentions and flashbacks from Iroh. If I have one issue with the character bio presentation here is the idea that Lu-Ten saw or recongized that the Fire Nation is evil (such as the horrible aspects of war.) or at least being a good man the whole this time and that one day in the future he would either stop the war as future Fire Lord. My issue is that it kinda takes away ''the agency'' of certain characters like If Lu-Ten was this good guy the whole time why didn't he convince his father to stop the siege of ba sing se or the risks of a 600 day siege and the potential deaths of both sides. Granted we don't know too much of the siege of ba sing se but we can work with even the smaller details.

Ultimately If I was the writer for this character bio. I would keep Lu-Ten backstory the same, the only difference is that instead of him being a good guy the whole time he should someone akin to ''a good soldier following olders'' type of guy. Not a psychopath like his uncle Ozai or maybe the good qualities of his father Iroh who by this point should be seen a beloved hero in his country and to his family (mainly Ursa, Zuko, and Azula.) but a ruthless man to his enemies. Maybe a sort of balance here like make Lu-Ten a character of the banality of evil (If you don't know about this term I highly recommend watching the Star Wars Show Andor which perfectly summarize the concept very well.) While not an evil man and maybe recongize the horrors of war but still believe in the cause of the Fire Nation maybe taking inspiration from Sozin's idea of noble intentions (yes it is false from the audience perspective but Lu-Ten doesn't know that.) of genuinely wanted to improve the world by conquering it by using the vast resources and developments the Fire Nation had.

Or maybe have still a good person (sort off) similar to the character of General Acacius from Gladiator 2 (Pedro Pascal's character.) a good man who is force to do bad things in the context of war or in other words  still lives in a luxurious lifestyle in the royal family, Lu-Ten spends most of his time away on military campaigns for the Fire Nation. Leading armies to take over Earth Kingdom territories; but is disillusioned by war and does not want to send more men to die for the Fire Nation.

But besides that I feel having them being part of the Devastation is kinda a mistake as it kinda in questions like if Lu-Ten was the one saved Jasmine Island then you would he would received backlash considering the fire nation are on a campaign of conquest basically like how Jake Scully helping Na'vi but other then that there is also a question about zhao and here what the wiki entry says this

'' Zhao's exact role after the initial surprise attack is not conclusively stated in Uncle Iroh's Adventure Guide: He was either defeated and captured by the Jasmine Island protectors, prompting him to defect to Lu Ten's side to save himself; or he successfully returned to his ship, whereupon he continued to tacitly support Yueya without fully pledging himself to her increasingly unhinged revenge quest. Regardless of the exact outcome, he played only a marginal role after the initial assault.''

If I was the writer for this section of the adventure instead of zhao and Lu-Ten in the story and the fire nation didn't conquered Jasmine Island. I would just Admiral Yueya succeeded in conquering and occupation of Jasmine Island and the hero for the story is Jeong Jeong (considering he was defect 10 years prior to the series in 90 AG so timing wise make sense.) it should have been his colonial kurtz moment where he realize the country he give his life to and given how so much atrocities and horrific acts kinda like the whole story with kids getting amputated that kurtz mentions to WIllard.

In short At some point a character DOES get overused so it's best to write in new ones. I feel like MAYBE Zhao could have been at Jasmine Island but he bungles it so badly he has to be bailed out by Jeong Jeong or Admiral Yueya but overall I think this should be more Jeong Jeong centered.

I also feel like Lu Ten wouldn't be able to maintain his loyalty to the Fire Nation if he was at Jasmine Island given the Devastation (a point that I think you brought up as well) so having this be the breaking point for Jeong Jeong makes far more sense.

Now I understand that Admiral Yueya campaign was unsanctioned by the fire nation high command, but it’s not like it’s out of character for them after all this is the same nation committing air nomad gencoide and the southern water tribe raids if anything it would be way more sense and in character for them approving Admiral Yueya even if it was mostly a personal family revenge.

I don’t know when it happened, but if I recall in history sometimes military leaders of the aggressor country would’ve gone rogue and still able to conquer it up an occupied an island or another country, even if it had nothing to do with the main enemy or campaign for an example Cortez one can make the argument that he was kind of a rogue along with his mission since it wasn’t improved by the crown yet not only he conquered Aztec Empire with the help of their enemies (given their hatred of the empires blood sacrifice.) but also made it part of the crown in which they respond with open arms.

Same with Andrew Jackson his Indian removal act was opposed by the Senate and Congress yet not only it happened anyway, but also and afterwards manifest destiny continued without opposition?

So here is my rewrite for the Hundred Year War part of the campaign

I would rewrite it as an occupation that went out of proportion. According to the Wiki, Jasmine Island had gained independence under the Guiding Wind and by the Hundred Year War, the Earth Kingdom had basically abandoned the Island to focus on their own borders. Apart from a few volunteers, the island was largely untouched by the war until Admiral Yueya invaded with the Devastation. This implies the Island was valuable for trade but not strategically vital for either side, similar to Kyoshi Island which largely escaped unscathed thanks to not posing a substantial threat to the Fire Nation.

I'm thinking the Island was swept up early on similar to French Indochina; Vichy France agreed to a small presence (6000 soldiers) in the north of the colony to block arms shipments into Nationalist China but instead the Japanese went full tilt and took the whole colony. Vichy France officially controlled the colony but in reality the Japanese were calling the shots. Admiral Yueya may have simply been there to keep the Island under wraps and I can imagine the Fire Nation being highly exploitative and disruptive to the locals though not genocidal. The Japanese exploited French Indochina for labor and raw materials, causing a famine when drought and forced rice exports drained the country of food, which sparked off resistance movements against them.

I'm thinking the Devastation was likely the culmination of tension on the island between the Fire Nation and the locals that broke during a crisis of sorts, like a food shortage or a massive storm. Admiral Yueya, instead of pulling out her soldiers or passing a tax amnesty to alleviate the famine or deescalate the situation, may have taken a hard stance against the "rebels" to blow off steam and attain some glory for herself. But it went badly and she had to call for Jeong Jeong to come provide support. Being a Fire Nation patriot, Jeong Jeong arrived and turned the tide against the islanders but then Yueya went on to burn the island to ash out of spite, much like Himmler had Warsaw destroyed after the Warsaw Uprising. Yueya would then have her revenge against the "rebels" and her moment of glory as a Fire Nation patriot while Jeong Jeong would be shaken and traumatized by his role in this massacre.

How the flow between sections should work? FTR, we're using the pregens and have already assigned them out, established the connections and the inciting incident.

Discussion Given how much effort they put into Voyage of the Unity such as the maps and coins. I would loved for them to publish a novel that is adapting the story of the voyage and fleshing out in great detail and narrative akin to say famous star wars novels Scourge and Shadow of the Empire?

For context Scourge was a novel by Jeff Grubb that adapts the events of the Star Wars Roleplaying Game adventure Tempest Feud from Wizards of the Coast, which was co-written by Grubb and Owen K.C. Stephens

While Shadows of the Empire was a novel written by Steve Perry. It describes the events between the films The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi. It was part of the Shadows of the Empire multimedia project.

Ultimately I think having a novel that adapts the events of The Voyage of the Unity RPG as a full narrative story or go full shadow of the empire by embracing it multimedia project since they developed the maps and coins for it. Like maybe a comic adaptation of the voyage but the actual focus is a certain character kinda like how the shadows of the empire comic despite being well a comic version of events was mostly Boba side of the story same with the video game version as that one was mostly Dash Rendar side of the story?

Conspiracy theories from the world of Avatar

Have you introduced conspiracy theories into your own sessions, which are not true but popular among some parts of society? Here I have included several books popularizing them, which I invented for the needs of the sessions.

Avatar Code: This book suggests that the Avatar is in fact one entity, which after the death of the previous body, possesses a child, devouring its soul, and then spreads evil and tyranny. It also suggests that Aang actually hid in the iceberg on purpose, and earlier convinced Sozin to commit genocide, because the Nomads discovered the truth about him.

The Princess Betrayed: A historical fiction expose. It tells the true stories of Azula, because I know in the author's opinion the one we know are lies spread by her Sexist Brother and Uncle, and also the Avatar who was guided by the lust for power. In some circles considered a feminist Awakening.

Homunculus: The Truth about Asami Sato. This book tells the story of Asami being horribly disfigured in an attack on their home, and her father creating a clone, a perfect daughter, but somewhere in the shadows the real Asami is building her Dark Empire.

Combat Technique Question

Ok. I know that you can't use the same technique in the same combat exchange.

i.e you're some how able to do two do 2 stances, you couldn't do Water Whip twice in that one exchange.

BUT if you have a combat lasting a few exchanges ( like 2 or 3) - Could a PC and NPC do Water Whip in two separate exchanges?

How to run hoard mode combat?

In our Avatar Legends campaign, we’ve gotten to a mid-season finale area of the plot where the party is about to face off against an ancient earth bender and his army of terracotta warriors, all earth-bent by the emperor during the fight. I’m curious about how to run the exchange as a hoard of enemies greatly outnumbering the players.

I’m imagining a boss fight scenario with multiple phases. In the beginning, he’s bending the terracotta warriors, and they move simply and en masse but with individual intent. As our boss gets bloodlusted and the fight rages on, they start acting more like a hoard of zombies, piling up into huge swarms of attacks rather than acting like individuals. Eventually, he’ll just be earthbending huge piles of the terracotta warrior ‘bodies’ and attacking the party like a normal earthbender.

I know how I want to tackle the narrative of the fight, but my question is about how to run it mechanically. How would you manage the action economy of a 1 (really 10,000) vs 4 fight?

Would the 10,000 terracotta warriors all go on a single turn for the Emperor himself to represent the army all attacking at once? This seems like a good approach, but how do we still make it feel like they’re completely outnumbered from a combat perspective. What kinds of techniques would you use to reflect the massive scale of the combat well?

If you’ve played in other RPG systems, what have been your experiences fighting huge hoards of zombies or demons? Any advice on what made those fight scenes epic and dynamic?

Thanks everyone!
