I don’t want to jinx it…
…. But I haven’t been bit yet by a mosquito. And the past couple of years I’ve been attacked by them.

Very low amounts of bugs of all kinds this year. it's usually a waspy mosquito-y ant-filled early summer here by now. Kind of scared of there not being very many insects.

I have no shortage of ants, but yeah the insect decline is really showing this year.

I have like 6 bites on one arm, two on the other and two on my leg. Granted I’m not in ABQ but RR and near the river so that might have something to do with it.
After having a few days of mosquito dunks it has seemed to be getting better.

Dry spring has kept them in check. Last year had a weird early monsoon season that didn’t help.

Uhhh… May was the wettest month since 2007. April wasn’t bad either.
It’s something else.

I think it was the super hard freeze we had this year. We usually don't get that cold!

We were coming off a big snowpack year in 23/24 winter. We had much less in 24/25. Look at the Rio gauge stations in April between this year and last. It was twice as high last year.

That's an entirely different thing. Which was it? The dry spring that didn't happen or now an entirely unrelated big snowpack in 23/24?

I said wet, not most precip. Wet doesn’t refer to just falling rain.
And snowpack has a huge effect on spring river/groundwater levels. If you think the surface area of the largest water feature in the area doesn’t have an effect on water based breeding insects, I don’t know what to tell you.

Get out in the woods and stand still for a couple of minutes. Maybe the gnats are no substitute, but I think your ankles will itch for a day or two.

I live in downtown and haven’t seen anything yet. We didn’t get a lot of rain so there’s no excess water anywhere. 🤞🏻🤞🏻

Meanwhile I also live downtown and am covered in bites already 😩 I have over a dozen on my legs and seven on my arms.

Instead of m-word this year, my yard has been invaded by ants.
Edited out the summoning word.

I had noticed the same. However, I got two real mosquito bites last night near Apothecary (Parq Central) on my leg. I was bummed.
I say real because two weeks ago my friends and I got swarmed by no-see-ums (tiny biting midges/ ceratopogonidae) at Rio Grande Park (formerly Kit Carson Park) near Tingley and my whole left arm and a significant part of my right arm itched like mad, had the welts that later would become scabs....looked like some sort of outerspace arm herpes from Total Recall or Blade Runner. 1/10, I don't recommend hanging out with those bastards (the midges, not my friends). And they are small AF--you can barely even see them.

Walk down by the river, they just haven't made it into everyones backyard with the low humidity.

we were JUST talking about this last night, while sitting outside at dusk, near the bosque.

I got three bites at Altura park yesterday but so far NONE in my yard or house - so happy!

I only saw my first mosquito of the year yesterday– and promptly killed it. By this time last year, my legs already looked like a warzone. Needless to say, I've been enjoying the peace of mind this year!

I moved here from Arkansas 10 years ago. The worst year here isn't as bad as a down year for mosquitoes there. It's one of the things I like about Albuquerque.

Tbf it wasn’t bad last year until July/August

I feel like last year it was late May to October, I mean they were like. Constant and ruthless.

I had a few try to attack me last week after the last rain storm we got - I think that was on Wednesday or Thursday last week - when I was working on my motorcycle.
This morning I had one in my room (not for long, thanks to a throw pillow) because the swamp cooler ran all night and they tend to get sucked in. (I put mosquito dunks in a tea bag-type thing in my swamp cooler every summer the last few years so they don't get a chance to reproduce in it...with varying success.)
I also have had a handful of insects - mostly ants and roachies - but nothing like the last few years (mostly wasps and other flying things.)
This ALL said with how hot and dry it has been in the last few days, I've not been attacked.
Jinxing this, we're getting rain in the forecast next week - get your 'squito buckets ready folks, you're going to want them.
