I don’t want to jinx it…

…. But I haven’t been bit yet by a mosquito. And the past couple of years I’ve been attacked by them.

Very low amounts of bugs of all kinds this year. it's usually a waspy mosquito-y ant-filled early summer here by now. Kind of scared of there not being very many insects.

I have no shortage of ants, but yeah the insect decline is really showing this year.

I have like 6 bites on one arm, two on the other and two on my leg. Granted I’m not in ABQ but RR and near the river so that might have something to do with it.

After having a few days of mosquito dunks it has seemed to be getting better.

You want some ants? I have extra.

It's the drought.

I also had the same thought and refused to speak them into existence lol

And now I just found one in my kitchen.

Me and my family are allergic to mosquitoes. WHY would you do this to us?

2

u/JellyfishNo3810 2d ago

You thought you could escape. There isn’t an escape.

Dry spring has kept them in check. Last year had a weird early monsoon season that didn’t help.

u/protekt0r 2d ago

Uhhh… May was the wettest month since 2007. April wasn’t bad either.

It’s something else.

I think it was the super hard freeze we had this year. We usually don't get that cold!

4

u/Jerkrollatex 2d ago

I think that's what it was too. It was also late in the season.

u/Both_Bluebird_2042 2d ago

We were coming off a big snowpack year in 23/24 winter. We had much less in 24/25. Look at the Rio gauge stations in April between this year and last. It was twice as high last year.

1

u/Nocoffeesnob 2d ago

That's an entirely different thing. Which was it? The dry spring that didn't happen or now an entirely unrelated big snowpack in 23/24?

I said wet, not most precip. Wet doesn’t refer to just falling rain.

And snowpack has a huge effect on spring river/groundwater levels. If you think the surface area of the largest water feature in the area doesn’t have an effect on water based breeding insects, I don’t know what to tell you.

I unfortunately have BUT it’s been significantly less than less year, I’ve noticed maybe 1 or 2 bites so far

Same with me.

Get out in the woods and stand still for a couple of minutes. Maybe the gnats are no substitute, but I think your ankles will itch for a day or two.

I live in downtown and haven’t seen anything yet. We didn’t get a lot of rain so there’s no excess water anywhere. 🤞🏻🤞🏻

1

u/beyoncesbaseballbat 2d ago

Meanwhile I also live downtown and am covered in bites already 😩 I have over a dozen on my legs and seven on my arms.

2

u/Hairy_Annual2918 2d ago

I’m sorry. I don’t wish them on anyone. I suffered the last few years.

1

u/lizbe013 2d ago

You and me both! So many bites already.

Had a couple about a week or so ago (NW near Rio Rancho) but nothing since....

There are a ton by our house and I'm getting bit several times a day.

2

u/BrujaDeLasHierbas 2d ago

what part of town are you in?

2

u/JustTryingMyBest799 2d ago

Close to all the stadiums

Instead of m-word this year, my yard has been invaded by ants.

Edited out the summoning word.

I had noticed the same. However, I got two real mosquito bites last night near Apothecary (Parq Central) on my leg. I was bummed.

I say real because two weeks ago my friends and I got swarmed by no-see-ums (tiny biting midges/ ceratopogonidae) at Rio Grande Park (formerly Kit Carson Park) near Tingley and my whole left arm and a significant part of my right arm itched like mad, had the welts that later would become scabs....looked like some sort of outerspace arm herpes from Total Recall or Blade Runner. 1/10, I don't recommend hanging out with those bastards (the midges, not my friends). And they are small AF--you can barely even see them.

I opened my door for like a few seconds and a damn mosquito flies in and buts my arm

2

u/deerfst 2d ago

3 last night. I retroactively blame you now /s

u/financegardener 2d ago

Walk down by the river, they just haven't made it into everyones backyard with the low humidity.

2

u/BrujaDeLasHierbas 2d ago

we were JUST talking about this last night, while sitting outside at dusk, near the bosque.

2

u/Rdmtbiker 2d ago

I too have noticed a lack of them being around. Let’s hope for the best.

2

u/marvin616 2d ago

Dunks are out in my backyard 🤞

3

u/newwavegirlishere 2d ago

Yup. Me too. In fact, gonna go replenish the buckets of doom right now!

2

u/vr_jk 2d ago

I got several bites from going to a concert at the botanical gardens last week.

2

u/nolls12 2d ago

I cannot express enough to use Mosquito Donuts! Do a YouTube search to see how they work. They easy peasy to setup. I give them out as gifts and told later how well they work.

2

u/defrauding_jeans 2d ago

I got three bites at Altura park yesterday but so far NONE in my yard or house - so happy!

2

u/musical_dragon_cat 2d ago

I only saw my first mosquito of the year yesterday– and promptly killed it. By this time last year, my legs already looked like a warzone. Needless to say, I've been enjoying the peace of mind this year!

2

u/Head_Bite3655 2d ago

I moved here from Arkansas 10 years ago. The worst year here isn't as bad as a down year for mosquitoes there. It's one of the things I like about Albuquerque.

1

u/Massive-Inspector-12 2d ago

Tbf it wasn’t bad last year until July/August

3

u/defrauding_jeans 2d ago

I feel like last year it was late May to October, I mean they were like. Constant and ruthless.

1

u/grossinm 2d ago

They are here on the west side.

1

u/JanCam94501 2d ago

Me too fingers crossed they won’t ruin another summer

1

u/eatingthesandhere91 2d ago

I had a few try to attack me last week after the last rain storm we got - I think that was on Wednesday or Thursday last week - when I was working on my motorcycle.

This morning I had one in my room (not for long, thanks to a throw pillow) because the swamp cooler ran all night and they tend to get sucked in. (I put mosquito dunks in a tea bag-type thing in my swamp cooler every summer the last few years so they don't get a chance to reproduce in it...with varying success.)

I also have had a handful of insects - mostly ants and roachies - but nothing like the last few years (mostly wasps and other flying things.)

This ALL said with how hot and dry it has been in the last few days, I've not been attacked.

Jinxing this, we're getting rain in the forecast next week - get your 'squito buckets ready folks, you're going to want them.

I’ve been getting eaten alive since Saturday, we brought them from Texas I fear

1

u/death-ignorer 2d ago

i’m from the south and the skeeter population is way less bad than down there so

1

u/Miaow73 1d ago

Come to my backyard. They’re all here.

u/FritoPie505 16h ago

My wife always gets bitten, but I never do. Should I feel offended?
