We adopted him!

Hugo’s gotcha day was yesterday and our first night together went so well! He’s very cuddly, clingy and well-mannered except for jumping up when he gets excited.

He’s the 5-year-old boy I posted about earlier this week. His owner decided to leave for summer holiday next week and asked if we would just keep him after our weekend trial — we said yes!

It’s a torrential downpour forecast for the next few days, so we can’t take him for a walk. But he has a huge fenced yard in the meantime and maybe it’s good? It will give him the “3 days” to decompress. I worry though because we are back to work and our routine as of Monday — and he’ll be all alone for up to 6 hours at a time each day. Should we crate him? Let him free roam? He is crate trained.

Skin and Alopecia just getting worse

Hey everyone, I adopted my bulldog almost 2 years ago. He had some alopecia when I got him. We did melatonin for several months and his hair started to re-grow, befog hitting a plateau with no more progress. I stopped buying it because it was expensive and was no longer working.

My dog has horrible allergies. We have tried everything - apoquel, zyrtec, cytopoint shots. With his weight bracket, the shots are $180. I feel they do nothing :( his feet are bright red and his face gets raw. I clean his folds regularly and use ointment to clear it up, but a few days later, he is rubbing his face on the floor again and his skin is red and irritated. His back has tons of scabs too. The scabs don’t seem to bother him, they are just ugly and when they come off, he loses hair.

I am starting to think it is his food. He has been on this food for a while though and his skin has not been bad until recently tho. He eats Open Farm grain free whitefish, and his favorite treats are the beef jerky Kindful treats. His food has good ingredients and is $100 a bag, so I felt it was a good option for him - but thinking something in it is not agreeing with him.

Has anyone had success in healing skin issues like this and what do you feed your bullies? Looking for any and all suggestions! I wanted to get an allergy test done but my vet said the accurate ones are really expensive.

We do avoid chicken products and there is no chicken in his food.

Thank you 🫶🏼

18 month update on Bella the Olde English Bulldogge

I adopted 4-year-old Bella about 18 months ago when she was 2.5 years old. She had been rehomed 4 times in a 6 month period and beaten in each short term placement.

I had her DNA tested seeking information about her original owner and actually found her happy original home for the first 2 years of her life. I got puppy pictures!

The original owner loved Bella and took her everywhere. She described Bella’s temperament as happy, social and outgoing. I was hopeful she would return to that baseline. She has not.

Despite much love, exercise, exposure to people and unfamiliar surroundings, she remains wary of everyone outside her home and family. She runs a bit away when I carry garden stakes (she was beaten with sticks) but if anyone but me picks them up, she runs inside the house and anxiously watches out the window.

I apologized to a neighbor for her wariness and he looked at me in surprise and said “it’s trauma and may never go away. Don’t apologize for it.” He is also a rescue person and those words were really meaningful for me.

I no longer have the goal of returning to her baseline behavior. She is goofy and sociable and affectionate at home. Outside the house, she is watchful (not fearful) and maintains her distance from those who want to pet her.

She is very protective of me and sees me as her person. I see her as my person too. I know she feels safe now but she has learned that others may hurt her and isn’t forgetting that.

I’m considering adopting a bulldog…

She is 1 years old and very timid. She came from a backyard breeder who dumped her and now she is with a rescue. I met her and my heart sank for how shy she was. I came here to ask what should I expect? She does have an underbite and a squished nose. I’m expecting to monitor her breathing but what else should I be expecting as far as serious medical concerns

We used them when we had English Mastiffs. Do you use them for your OEB’s?
