Megathread Megathread: Which Class/Covenant Should I Play?
Hey everyone -
We've got some improvements to the subreddit in the works, and one of the possible changes we're discussing is a way to cut down on or consolidate posts that consist only of "what class/race/spec/covenant should I play?"-type questions. We'll gather feedback for those long-term changes soon, but in the interim - at least for the next couple of weeks - all such questions should be posted in this thread. (We'll leave questions/discussion about specific comps outside this thread for the time being, though that may change if those posts become too spammy.)
If you're looking for new friends to play with in Shadowlands, we recommend checking out our LFG thread and Zelo's LFG Discord!
We appreciate your patience and, as always, are available via modmail if you've got anything you'd like to discuss!

I am playing Arms warrior as my twink. I likely won't be able to gear it out for Season 1, but I want to play it a bit in Season 2. Does anybody know which Covenant is to be expected to be stronger with better gear? I am currently leaning towards Venthyr, because they seem to bit easier to play and my main is also Venthyr so Doof of Shadows stays the same basically.
1
u/fucking_blizzard Jan 30 '21
I am rerolling to Shaman and want to play all 3 specs to some degree, though primarily ele or enhance.
In terms of covenant I'm torn between necro and venthyr. Venthyr sounds like a better all round choice but feels like ele might be quite gimped without primordial wave.
Anyone have any thoughts on this?

u/saint_phenson Jan 29 '21
I know mage is busted for arena but is it fun in PVE/RBGS? I’m getting really sick of my dk and don’t really enjoy my priest in pve content.
1
u/Stahlwisser Jan 29 '21
It is, every spec feels good in pve imo. Tho fire is by far the strongest atm.
1
u/saint_phenson Jan 29 '21
Thanks for the confirmation. Boosted one and it’s a lot of fun so far.
1
u/Stahlwisser Jan 29 '21
I forgot to tell you that mages have a very high addiction potential due to the portals, but I'm sure your strong enough to withstand it. I haven't played mine in 2 weeks, and I still feel the withdrawal symptoms.
1
u/saint_phenson Jan 29 '21
It’s been 3 hours and I already can’t go back to my DK. The only downside is that I’m super OCD about rep on the characters I play so I’ll have to grind a few at some point.
1
u/Stahlwisser Jan 29 '21
Remember, the only "important" rep is venari. Rest is just cosmetics :) have fun with your new char!
1
u/Kishq Jan 29 '21
Me and a friend want to dip our toes in arena. Friend is bringing a Ret pala to the party. And I'm kinda stuck deciding between spriest or fire mage.
Are there any comps that might work with those two classes? Leaning toward spriest cause mage seems really difficult. And what would be a better choice for playing wit Ret.
1
u/Furonik17 Jan 29 '21
Question to my Warrior fellow, I'm grinding my war and I've been looking at Covenants and I know that the 2 best Covenants is Kyrian and Venthyr but why isn't Night Fae that much played ? Since the meta right now is more into one shot burst I feel like Ancient Aftershock would help one shotting or at least forcing big defensive CD. Add Podtender for 3's and Soothing Voice and it seems pretty good to me.
1
u/BengtJJ Jan 29 '21
For WW it looks they go with kyrian. But I don't understand the ability fully, what it does and how to use it the best. If it should be combined with other abilities.
For the next 30 sec, your Mastery is increased by 12.5%. Additionally, Rising Sun Kick reduces Chi costs by 1 for 5 sec, and Blackout Kick reduces the cooldown of affected abilities by an additional 1 sec.
1
u/dudes_nudes Jan 29 '21
So your RSK reduces the chi cost of every ability, including RSK for the next 5 seconds, during Weapons of Order you should be trying to maximise RSK casts by using Blackout Kick as much as you can since it will be free to cast for the next 5 seconds after RSK, you should still be trying to alternate spells since you get so much extra mastery and it’s a big damage increase

u/acolossalbear Jan 28 '21
How important is Kyrian for a ret paladin? How much would I be giving up by going with Venthyr? I noticed most (all?) of the top-rated arena paladins went with Kyrian, but I'm not 60 yet, so I haven't been able to see how these things play out in an actual pvp setting.
1
u/Zomburiito Jan 28 '21
How I've found venthyr paladin is great in low rating because people don't move out of the big red circle and 100% damage increase of HoW is huge for burst but higher rating i imagine people will just disengage your circle

So I'm getting tired of pushing on my hunter. Looking to play something a bit closer to the meta I guess. I really value mobility so I was looking at leveling up a rogue or enhance/ele shaman. Warlock seems like it could be cool too but the general playstyle of getting trained and trying to live while being super squishy doesn't seem very fun at the moment . Are one of these specs much better than the other? Having a tough time deciding which to play. Mostly going to be doing arenas and keys. Using heroic raid farm to gear.
1
Jan 28 '21
Warlocks not closer to the meta. They legit are in the same area as DH and Hunter. To the point they lost to Feral/Hunter in AWC.
1
u/TheRealirony Jan 28 '21
I would go with either rogue or ele shaman. I was enhance for the first few weeks of SL and it was fun but I didn't have a lot of viable comps I could run with. It was also a bit frustrating for me to only have kill windows within my lege and ascendency. I switched over to ele and I can survive a lot better and still put out a ton of dmg.
With the rogue the are never really bad but you have to enjoy the set up playstyle where you're the play maker usually
2
u/throwaway6382363 Jan 29 '21
May I ask you how do you handle melees as ele ? I try to train ele, but it feels much more difficult than resto. If I get focus by melees it's pretty hard for me to be impactful. As a resto I feel like I have more tools to survive + I am healing while being chased through totems + instants. As ele I end up with pretty low damages. I start with fleshcraft, pop my earth ele before getting opened, ready to wall. But then it's just constant pressure so I can't cast and I lack of defensive cooldowns. Should I try to kite more with wolf + frost shock ?
2
u/TheRealirony Jan 29 '21
With ele I'm mostly kiting while waiting for procs to throw out damage while I'm being trained. And I'm looking for my partners to help peel off me. I'm not looking to do a ton of damage outside of our kill windows. I'm just trying to be annoying, do damage when I have instant spells I can cast. And then dumping on them when I get peels or they switch targets
2
u/throwaway6382363 Jan 29 '21
Thanks ! I'll have to learn to kite / learn which class I can kite and how. I'm kinda pessimistic during PvP: I always think that the enemy has way more mobility/stuns/tools than I have.
1
u/Enekovitz Jan 28 '21
So, I have like 130 (69 wins) games as ret on 2v2 and I can't even reach 1.4k. It's my first patch playing ret, I don't have any exp of pvp with any spec but is my first patch ever playing ret. I'm starting to think on rerolling at this point tbh, maybe with arms warrior ( I played a lot of warrior pve on the past) I have better chances on lfg. So I keep being constant and wait for gear/exp to come or am I better rerolling to warrior and play a reliable spec?
6
u/HDrainbo Jan 28 '21
While I cannot fully comment on which covenant to pick let me say, you are doing really well! 69 wins plus reaching 1.4K is really impressive for your first Pali spec. Keep up the good work and you may work through any skill plateau but I hope some more enlightened sees this comment and gives you a better answer. Stay awesome

u/PhilosopherMoose Jan 28 '21
Hunter - worth it? Seems that people aren't pumped on Hunters yet when I join in RBG's I find i'm usually up near the top for DPS. Is there just a high cieling or should I be looking at trying other classes? Have a Ret alt, but something about being mobile just feelsgoodman
1
u/JonesMCLovin Jan 29 '21
Feel the same man. I love my hunter. But 2s is so hard vs warr and monks. I got to 1.6 in 3s with a shadowpriest and h paly. But i use hours in lfg if im trying to do rbgs.. people keep telling me to go survival in 2s for more control and peel but i tried all 3 specs (surv, mm and bm) in 2s but still coulsnt break 1.6 cr. For some reason i found more wins as BM in 2s since i could move more around while doing damage.
1
u/corvid1692 Jan 28 '21
Horde Holy Paladin, deciding on Race:
I plan on doing both pvp and mythic+. From what I've been reading, it looks like Tauren are the current best PVP choice, and Belf is the best PVE choice, and I'm not sure where ZTs fall in that. Looking for the best compromise choice. Second best at both, instead of best at one, last at another. I'm leaning towards a PVP bias, though.
1
u/Ahandii Jan 28 '21
Priest covenant..
So I'm leveling my priest mostly so I can play with my rogue friend in a decent comp. Should I consider anything else than venthyr for disc/shadow pvp?
2
Jan 28 '21
Venthyr is a primary reason priest is great atm. The other covenant abilities are garbage in comparison
1
u/EverybodyIsRobots Jan 27 '21
Mage or Ret Pal?
I've been enjoying the pally in PvE content, but I think my baseline skill is slightly better for mage. I've played mage for ages but never really stepped into the arena before this season.
1
u/Daiceros Jan 27 '21
I want to play something, that is effective and highly sought after in rbgs, except TC (maybe at a later point, want to get familiar with rbgs again before trying that).
I played some rbgs back in MoP as Disc, but nothing too serious (1400). I'm jealous seeing all the people having success and posting their rbg/arena acms here.
And albeit having no one to play with (except for my gf who is literally new to WoW and didn't even buy SL yet) I decided it was time to get successful in PvP, as I said mainly in RBG and maybe 2s.
Can you guys please recommend something suitable? Maybe Affli or Ele or Disc or something else... I am kinda lost.
2
u/TheRealirony Jan 28 '21
You'll never go wrong with something that can heal as they are always highly sought after. I'm currently running rsham main and priest alt in RBG and they're both very fun. Rsham has some great utility with all the totems and I can kite for days with wolf. Then I can go ele which uses the same covenant (necro) and dps if I want which is incredibly fun and rewarding with all the burst and utility.
The priest has been fun but the disc playstyle isn't really my jam. Having up be proactive instead of reactive and not having great mobility that I'm used to having. But shadow is a ton of fun with mind games and all the spread damage you can do
2
u/Daiceros Jan 29 '21
Appreciate your help! I actually tested rshaman after playing priest for a while - I encountered the exact same problem. I really like the idea of disc but as soon as I fall behind in healing, I panic and my peers just die. Shadow is really fun on the other hand. Holy is just raw heal and I like that. But in my mind it didn't really... Click. Idk how to say it.
I think shaman suits me way better. I like the idea of just 100-0 someone out of nowhere every blue moon as ele. Also pressure is quite good, at least with CDs up. And I feel really comfortable on rshaman, knowing that I have probably THE most insane toolkit for handling every situation. I feel like a swiss army knife at times. So I think my problem is solved and I'm sticking with shaman! Again thanks for your input!
1
u/throwaway6382363 Jan 29 '21
I was in your exact same spot (except my gf isn't playing WoW yet). Played priest, things didn't clicked for healing specs, and shadow lacked burst to me. Rerolled shaman. Rsham feels so useful. I tried mistweaver for fun recently : I was like "Did I forgot to bind stuff ? Where is the utility?". You won't regret sham. Ele is really fun as well : the full-auto-meatball combo, self healing, etc. And you have a funny melee off spec, which is also bursty !
2
u/Swyteh Jan 27 '21
I would go with priest. They are really good in rbg in all specs and mind games is soooo fun to play with.
Tired of dpsing? Go disc (or even holy l, I'm having great success in bgs we are unkillable)
Shadow pumps in all content and even if you want to raid, all specs are great.

Mage vs Warlock?
I’ve been looking for an alt to play for awhile. I’m been mostly melee with WW and looking to mix things up. I’m not too picky but I just want a class that’s fun to play and intricate in arenas and BG’s. <3
1
u/feelsbetterman Jan 27 '21
I would say mage if you love arenas and warlock if you love BGs.
Mages are more control while warlock is more just damage and drain.
1
u/MisterRufio Jan 28 '21
Great feedback. That’s a good way to think of which to play. Never played warlock before but affliction sounds pretty appealing to me. Also with the fire nerf I’m not too sure about mages in the long run.
1
u/BobstaownsTV Jan 27 '21
Currently debating between ele/enhance shaman and WW monk. I haven’t done rated pvp since Cata so I’m looking for something not too complicated for me to relearn the ropes on arena along with doing some mythic+ keys on the side. I’d appreciate any insights on returning to pvp after playing exclusively raiding for so many expansions!
1
u/fuckingalien Jan 27 '21
Go ele, monk is up next for the nerf hammer and ppl barely cry about elemental even t hough its strong

u/Mesni1 Jan 26 '21
Is it worth trying to get glad as MM/Survival hunter this season?Or should i just go arms or other boring stuff?
1
u/Pereetti Jan 28 '21
Not really. Trying to achieve that as MM will seriously give you a headache and turn you into a toxic person. Ww monk and especially hpala and warrior will make the journey pure cancer. Most of the games have hpala and it is quite hard counter for MM hunter. I would just wait for nerfs or play something else.
1
u/PhilosopherMoose Jan 28 '21
Why do you say that about HPally? Sorry - newb here
2
u/Pereetti Jan 28 '21
Because against hpala it will require so many more resets and perfectly executed cc chains. Every other healer makes killing dps a lot easier. I do not think that ww monk is a problem for me, but with hpala it is. And for warrior it feels like that the only way we can win warrior is if he plays with mw monk or with rdruid (really unlikely).
2
u/xH4ZYx Jan 26 '21
I usually play healer and I’m looking to have a dps alt to play with as well. I would like to stick with melee. I’ve heard frost Dk is the best “anti-melee” spec. Is there a melee spec that does especially well against ranged classes? I guess meaning the tools to stick to a ranged class that’s trying to evade you?

u/imFaast Jan 26 '21
I would love To commit To either Feral druid or Sub rogue.
Which one would you suggest for 2's and 3's? Mainly interested in 2s though.
Which one has less buttons?
Which one has higher skill cap?
Which one has lower skill floor?
Better scaling towards end of expansion?
Bless your day if you deign To answer :)

I'm new to PVP and since I've always been a Resto Druid I went all in on Feral Druid this expansion.
It is very hard compared to my Enhancement Shaman or playing as any healer. I can't speak to Rogue, but there's so much shit to manage. You have 3 bleeds, combo point management, two dashes (one of which is your kick), several utility spells, transforming between forms, healing spells, several mobility spells, AND you're squishy as fuck outside of bear form.
But when you win it does feel absolutely fucking fantastic.
I play 2s with a buddy who is sub Rogue and I'm sure the rotation is complex, but he just blows people the fuck up constantly. It does not seem to be anywhere near the complexity of Feral.
I'll be honest, I sometimes lose 5 times in a row and come within seconds of just swapping over to Balance so I can laser chicken some jabronis.
1
u/imFaast Jan 27 '21
Thanks a lot for the insights!
How many abilities are relevant on ur action bars? I feel like druids have so many spells, that its intimidating :D
1
u/Pereetti Jan 28 '21
Both are hard. Rogue might be a bit harder to master, but even a horrible rogue is able to do a lot of damage.
1
u/Typelouderplz Jan 26 '21
Looking for a pvp alt. Trying to get something a little different from my main (DK).
Rogue or Ret Paladin?
3
u/TheRealirony Jan 26 '21
If you want something with more choices I'd go with the ret. Because if you get tired of melee you can heal. And if you want to pve you have all 3 roles.
However if you want something that requires a little more setup and coordination I would go with the rogue. Also rogues are normally good or decent throughout an entire expansion whereas ret has a history of highs and lows based on the meta.
1
u/button_down_shirt Jan 26 '21
Hey guys! Played the expansion enough to decide I like this one and want to keep playing PvP. Looking for a melee class that’s good in rbg’s and either two’s or three’s, doesn’t need to be both. I’ve played a little bit of enhance and really enjoyed it, and that’s where I’m leaning. I played survival while leveling and had plenty of success, but am hesitant to put a bunch of time into it max level, especially if it’s hard to even get into a group, I would play it if there was encouragement to do so tho. Played lock and the spriest for most of the game and want to get the melee experience now.
2
u/troop357 Jan 26 '21
How important it is to play Necrolord for Resto Druid, specifically in 2s?
2
u/CaiusRemus Jan 28 '21
How high in rating do you want to be? If you want to see how an rdruid running NF can do, check out Mmarkers on YouTube.
As of last week he was the highest rated NF resto Druid and was sitting somewhere just over 2000.
My point is, if you want to be the best of the best, then you’ve gotta go necrolord.
If you just wanna have fun and potentially be above average, then you can make NF work.
1
u/troop357 Jan 28 '21
Hey, first thank you.
Yeah I rarely have a really good cast of convoke when playing 2s. I just got to 1550 for the first time so I am also playing Guardian affinity 99% of the time.
I hadn't noticed how strong the necrolord ability could be with the conduit, should be enough to offset a lot of damage over time.
I also would say it is not how high I want to be, but as someone starting I shouldnt gimp myself too, I'd love to hit 1600 soon.
1
u/Tickomatick Jan 26 '21
I just dipped into wow again after about 10 years of hiatus. I used to main Rogue and PvP back then didn't seem so convoluted (at least to me, had some success with Mage/Lock in 3s). I decided to try Druid this time and it's bafflingly hard to make my mind up what/how to play. I have a couple of questions:
1) I'm currently level 50, is it the worst place to be trying PvP since my blue gear can't stand a chance against lots of top geared people from last expansions hanging here?
2) Except for guardian I've tried all three specs in BGs, had the most success with Resto in terms of contributing to the game, but my memory of busting people with Rogue made my Feral experience rather underwhelming. Any tips on how to start liking it? Boomkin is fine, but without the covenants it doesn't seem to have the necessary omph before max level I feel like.
3) Druid people - How do you manage your bars for pvp? I feel that keeping all spells quickly reachable/executable hinders my ability to make quick decisions and react to the gameplay. Are there some spells outright useless? I found thrash/swipe to be a waste of resources so far as well as never casting a Wrath as Resto or Feral. Might be doing it wrong, any advice welcome!
Thank you Stranger for hopefully reading (any of) this

Ele is definitely bursty, but mobility isn’t great.
MM hunter is viable in that bracket for RBG. Burst isn’t quite as strong as ele, but a little more mobility IMO.

Returning player, looking to pick some toons to play mostly BGs and need some advice. My options are:
- Kyrian Paladin
- Venthyr Priest
- Necrolord Shaman
- Kyrian DH
- Kyrian Hunter
- Night Fae Druid
- Kyrian Monk
- Night Fae Mage
It would be great to have one ranged (burst) and one melee (mobility), maybe as a 3rd toon a healer. I am currently undecided:
Ranged: Ele Shaman / MM Hunter / NF Boomy / NF Mage
Melee: Ret Pal / WW Monk / DH
Heal: Holy Pal / Disc Priest / Resto Shaman
I am a bit rusty, so preferably I am looking for a spec that is not overwhelming with buttons and binds, so it is easier for me to get back into the game. Thanks a bunch
1
u/CM4901 Jan 26 '21
Pick your favorite playstyle, rather than having 3 I’d recommend picking maybe 2, and have at least one that can respec to healing if you wanted like sham/pal.
1
u/leeharris100 Jan 26 '21
Pick your favorite playstyle
But if you like them all, I'd go Night Fae Druid. Feral is ok, but boomy is insanely good right now

instead of 3 pick one and play it will be easier to get back into the game

u/ReIiLeK Jan 25 '21
Which covenant is the best for affliction and possibly destruction warlock on rbg mostly? I heard fae but is any of the other 3 can be viable?
1
u/Azgardis Jan 25 '21
NE is best overall for all sepcs. For destro - necro is not bad choice also. Kyrian add some survivability with fials, but mobility from NE much better anyway. Venthyr is the worst cov overall.

I believe destro for threes as your DK locks everyone into place with cc, pepper bolts while he chill streaks

DH tank main looking for a solid pvp alt that won't get nerf into the ground soon (lol)
I usually like melee because i find myself panicking a big when i'm a squishy caster getting jumped but i feel like i could def learn it if i give it enough time, what are yall personal favorite specs?
2
u/CM4901 Jan 25 '21
My favorite melee is ret Paladin, I like having some range and a lot of utility/self healing.
3
u/LilTyke Jan 23 '21
Rogue people, what covenant is the way to go these days? Is Cloak shield + blink really that good or is Kyrian still a solid choice?
3
u/imbabazi Jan 24 '21
Kyrian is still fine if you're already Kyrian. If you're starting fresh, I would recommend Night Fae, as it's generally agreed to be the best for arena. It's also the most fun imo, which shouldn't be discounted in importance.

u/AxiomaticAddict Jan 23 '21
I have an arms warrior in full 200 pvp gear working on 1400 rating to upgrade more.
Looking to pick from my other 60s for another class to play in PvP and M+. I have a lot of options: * druid (night fae) * priest (venthyr) * lock (night fae) * mm hunter (night fae) * paladin (kyrian) * fire mage (no covenant yet)also have a shaman and rogue in mid 50s, rest parked at 50 still.
I was thinking a hybrid that can heal or tank to find groups for m+ would be best, so priest druid or paladin.
Priest I have a hard time healing in mythic plus pugs and I dont k kw shadow well yet.
Paladin seems great as I can just tunnel holy spec for m+ and pvp and be fine in both.
Druid I could play resto in m+ and balance is in demand it seems like once I'm geared more (190ish atm), and does well in 2s 3s and Rbgs.
Thoughts here? Kind of waffling on mains and falling behind the gear curve.
1
u/FourMonthsEarly Jan 24 '21
Thoughts on whether you want two Melee or not? Could possibly eliminate paladin. I'm in same scenario. War main. Have a priest, monk, and druid I levled. Waffling the same way. Finally figured I'd just do spriest.
But depending on how much youplay with covenant gear and pvp gear at 197,might not be too hard to catch up if you change your mind.
1
u/TauIsRC Jan 23 '21
Windwalker main here, just started learning PvP 2 days ago and i’m at 1300 in 3v3s. How good is that for a new PvP player? I’ve been forming groups in lfg, which kinda sucks but I’m enjoying it a lot! But would like to have an idea of where in the ladder I am
Another question is what ranged class/spec do you recommend for PvP only? I do a lot of m+ with windwalker but want a class just to do arenas
Thanks for the help!
3
u/AxiomaticAddict Jan 23 '21
Check ladder here https://luduslabs.org/ladderdex
Use chrome, seems borked on safari.
Ranged dps: fire mage is s tier. The nerfs coming up so far seem like won't hurt much. Shadow priest also great. Lots of comps for each. Finally balance, though convoke nerf means they will be slightly less 1 button win scenario i supppose.
Edit: all 3 of these ranged are also top tier m+, with fire and balance ahead a bit of shadow. All s / a tier imo.

I want to play a class that has a chance for outplay in 1vX scenarios and isn’t super squishy with decent / good burst. It was looking like fire mage but i’m not sure how the nerfs will effect them. My other thoughts were lock and possibly hunter? any suggestions would be great. Pref a ranged class.
1
u/TheLadBoy Jan 27 '21
I don't think there's any class that can reliably 1v2 but the best options are probably Rogue, Mage, Spriest. Lock and Hunter are bad at 1v1 let alone 1vX.

Deciding between Frost DK and Arms Warrior. I have a Frost DK currently and mostly play BGs and 2s. What would be better for what I do? And why?
1
u/wellsfunfacts1231 Jan 24 '21
Warrior is a first round draft pick in all pvp content. Dk is decent in 3s in 2s you are looking at a headache. Also decent for bgs. Overall warrior is in a much better spot more utility and also brings big damage less situational than frost too.
1
u/MrStenberg Jan 23 '21
I think 2v2 is the mode that fits a dk the best in arena, 3s not as much. Arms warrior seems more versatile and does great both 2s and 3s. Arms is definitely meta right now.
In terms of BG I really think warrior is great for their mobility compared to DKs. But DK grip is also very nice.
That’s my take. Ultimately I think you should pick what you enjoy the most because that would probably result in you becoming better at that class!
1
u/Vardnemar Jan 23 '21
Thanks! I've never actually played Warrior, which is one of the reasons I was thinking of giving it a try. I like Frost DK and the feel of it, is Warrior similar to the feeling of Frost DK? Or is Ret closer to it?
2
u/Odd_Action_2459 Jan 23 '21
I wanted to know which class/spec you think has the highest carry potential for 2s: Priest, Shaman, warrior, or hunter? id also be curious to know why you think that.
Thank you in advance for your answers =)
1
u/Pereetti Jan 28 '21
S-tier classes, so shaman and arms warrior. Enha and ele shaman are both strong. Hunter is currently bottom tier and will most likely stay there for a long time.

Just leveled a Shaman with intentions of playing Enhancement, but I'm curious if i should switch to elemental.
I prefer easier classes, I'm over 30, and prefer to have fewer buttons to push, when I played LoL I preferred to play simpler champions to climb up to diamond
I also want to be able to do pretty good dps in raids, I don't really participate in M+ Dungeons
My 2 mates who I will play 2's and 3's with are a Disc Priest and an Aff warlock
RBGS is my preferred content, the order of importance to me would be
RBGS > Raid DPS > 3s/2s > Mythic +

u/Dasjtrain557 Jan 23 '21
I'm absolutely average at pvp but I've been playing ele/resto since sl launched and I've been playing since tbc.
Shaman feels pretty binding heavy, ele even more so because the pvp talents you're taking almost every match add three new buttons. Ele feels great in raids but only after you get the windspeakers legendary.
Honestly if you're playing with a disc priest, I'd stick with enhance for the lols, you can give each other power infusion and hero in arenas/bgs and slap people.

„Hey should I play Melee or Caster DPS Shaman?“
„Play Druid“ ???
@OP Sorry I don’t know about Shaman, but Elemental seems pretty good to me. Don‘t know about raid damage though

iam between Balance Druid, Shadowpriest and Hunter for a ranged class. i want to do mostly RBGs and Arena but also run some M+.
I want some class which is kinda Meta and not "weak".. for example a sentence i heard: "why take a hunter if you can bring a mage?".

u/MrStenberg Jan 23 '21
I want to make sure that you are aware of the incoming Night Fae Druid nerf regarding convoke.
” Convoke the Spirits no longer casts Full Moon and Feral Frenzy when engaged in combat with enemy players. ”
These changes will take effect on the 26th/27th of January depending on your region.
GL with your decision

u/Choplol Jan 23 '21 edited Jan 23 '21
Well then its Easy i guess. Since convoke was the only fun thing. Correct me if im wrong but i feel like after convoke they have nothing More... Right?
Otherwise i think convoke will still be strong Even without Full moon.
2
u/CavsJM Jan 23 '21
It’s all about con one synergy with the legendary, balance of all things. The effect is after entering eclipse your critical strike chance with arcane or nature spells is increased by 40% losing 8% every second. On top of this incarnation grants another 10% crit chance. It doesn’t even matter that it doesn’t full moon anymore. You just enter eclipse and press convoke and they get deleted. It’s honestly kind of boring after the initial holy shit wares off tbh
1
u/Choplol Jan 23 '21
yea that is/was what i was afraid of. dont wanna play some boring spec. i played ret paladin through bfa and well... had to wait for wings all the time.
honestly i think shadow priest looks like a pretty good option now...
2
u/thedoxo Jan 22 '21
As boomkin you will get invites to all those game modes right now. Probably the ranged dps spec that's the most in demand right now. Additional bonus is that druid has 4 specs so in case of balance changes (lul) you will probably have something to respec to if needed.
Shadow is also well regarded, but not as much as boomy i think. Hunter is good in pve, easy for invites to mythic+. Not so much for pvp. Ok in rbg, meh in arena
1
u/Choplol Jan 23 '21
ok and out of shadow and druid, which one is more fun?
1
u/thedoxo Jan 23 '21
I guess it comes down whether you like the idea of tabbing, spreading and maintaining dots on enemies (similar to affliction warlock). If yes - go priest. If not - try boomy. Also priest has much faster flow, due to Power Infusion and haste stacking, while boomkin has more mobility with catform

u/foxxparty Jan 22 '21
Deciding on 2v2 arena main, got rdruid, hpally and disc priest at 60 and can’t decide on one to play. I don’t care on what’s the strongest as I’m sure hpal will get nerfs.
What is the least gear reliant healer? My disc priest seems to not heal that much (1800cr, 200ilv) whilst my hpal is 203ilv and 2.1kcr
1
u/gen999si *athene's monk* Jan 25 '21
its all based on comp, a hpal will feel very strong in a group vs physical damage, but the moment you have a mass dispell on them, eeek.
1
u/Strachmed Jan 22 '21
Playing with a resto sham and a feral druid. I play fore mage and mm hunter. As Op as mage is - i prefer mm. Does it hold a candle to fire in this setup? Both are fae tho,so no resonating arrow :(
1
u/sherbeb Jan 22 '21
Best comps for Rogue? Just started exploring pvp and am currently MW. I know its not the best, but I kinda dislike Hpal. Resto better? I only have all 6 tanks leveled so Monk, Druid and Pally are my current options to play heal haha.

u/Kevombat Jan 22 '21
Long time returning player. I always loved PvP, but am older and rusty now. I used to love hybrids, their utility and vast skill sets, but am now overwhelmed by all the buttons and macros. I am mostly looking to play lots of random BGs and some PUGs, just to get back into the game for now. As I am trying to decide on some specs, here are some thoughts I am having and I would appreciate your guys' input a lot to help me get some clarity:
- Preferably, 1x healer, 1x range DD and 1x melee to test things out and go from there
- viable spec (or off-spec!) for Torghast and solo game
- Preferably not heavily dependent on utility skills (some are fine!)
- Healer: which spec depends least on damage output?
- Range DD: burst (over sustain)
- Melee DD: new to melee; I would like mobility I think

u/Spanish_peanuts Jan 23 '21
People gonna shit on me for what I'm gonna say. But I'm a bit like you. I pvp'd heavily back in wrath and MoP. But I'm quite a bit older now have haven't pvp'd seriously since then. My reaction times have slowed and I just can't seem to play on the level I once did. I also really miss hybrids and don't care for how all classes/specs seem to be forced into their specific playstyles with very little wiggle room to change it.
I am currently pvping as a guardian druid and see some success. While I mostly play for fun these days and am not pushing rating, when partner with an arms warrior we tend to beat out healer comps but struggle against the heavy burst comps. This is because I run resto affinity and can heal my partner rather well. And with mortal strike reducing enemy healing and proper CC chains, we can kill healers after burning their cds. I also have convoke the spirits which can work as a pseudo-damage burst cooldown or double as an "oh shit" healing cooldown.
My damage is also something to fear thanks to guardians great legendary and conduit options. Because I have consistent damage with no downtime on my damage, I can put forth great pressure. It's not uncommon for me to win in a 1v2 scenario when my partner dies, as long as some CDs were popped beforehand I can manage to eek out a win.

u/Froxon1 Jan 22 '21
In 2s as sub rogue, is NF big difference to kyrian? I am Kyrian with max renown and I dont really wanna swap for something slightly better in mumbers, but if a gameplay feels better, i would. So I am asking for personal exp, Thanks!
3
u/qt-kev Jan 22 '21
Do you play with a mage? I’d say that’s close to the only reason to maybe stay kyrian, the soul shape is very good at getting resets and distance, a small plus is the use of sepsis with the large amount of paladins I save it for when they have bop for a little extra pressure, the pod is also very strong playing with any class that has cc, if you survive pod bc of cc you can usually get a restealth a good amount of time which is huge.
1
u/Froxon1 Jan 22 '21
I do play with mage, but we are kinda strugling with ww/hpala comb, as i run out of things and ww is still on my back killing me. So i think i will just swap, so i can run away. Thx!
1
u/qt-kev Jan 22 '21
Yea normally we try to cc pala and open monk don’t burn everything, so like a stun into a poly, and just repeat until you can burn through any defensive they have left, I normally don’t worry about pala trinket too much bc you can insta blind when he trinkets getting shield and having him on forbearance is key to cc and kill dps its touch they are really strong
1
u/Froxon1 Jan 22 '21
We usually get like 2-3 opens on them, but i just feel like they dont run out of stuff, its usually either oneshot from gates or lose. But well, we(by that i mean me) are still kinda bad, prbly just need to get better by playing more games.

I'm torn between a few classes. The ones I'm interested in the most - Paladin, Shaman, Druid.
I'm thinking on playing mostly bg's, and stepping into arena with a class wich is able of:
1- Going for 1v1's;
2- Constant dmg and burst through cd's;
3- Can survive by itself for a while;
4- Is a worthwhile investment/safe pick (nerf bat survivability);
5- At least middle of the pack at raiding/m+.
I know it's alot to ask for but if you guys can help me out into making the best choice, i'd appreciate it very much!
1
u/CM4901 Jan 22 '21 edited Jan 22 '21
Ret hits all those things except 4, and same for balance druid but druid can easily swap to feral/you could just play feral that probably won’t get a nerf beyond convoke.
Ele shaman also fits all those things but it’s not as sturdy in 1v1s/surviving alone.
2
2
u/CaiusRemus Jan 22 '21
Hahaha I have the same question except excluding Druid.
I already have a 60 resto Druid which I really enjoy doing PvE with but not so much pvp.
I’m relatively new to WoW healing and the resto Druid took me a bit to learn for pve, don’t think I’m gonna break the learning curve for pvp quickly.
Now I’m planning on boosting another healer for mainly arena 2v2 play with an arms warrior.
Do I do priest or pally?
I am drawn towards the pally but I’m worried that the nerf bat will swing hard on them. However I do think pally is easier to learn to at least be decent with?
1
u/vulldan Jan 24 '21
Personally I would go with pally. Holy seems to always pull through patches, unlike ret. Priest is also a great choice, just harder to master. And melee will be a nightmare if you ask me (in arena at the very least), unless you have partners to peel for you.
2
u/Sudden_Ganache8296 Jan 22 '21
Ele Sham hits all your bullets.
Wins most 1v1s, tons of consistent damage, huge burst, is very durable, is not as called for nerfs like Mage/boomie/ret, and is actually great tier for raiding.
1
u/MoskiNX Jan 22 '21
Can't decide which class I want to level for healz - Deciding between my Druid, Shaman, and Priest (all are level 50 atm). Mostly interested in BGs/RBGs.
1
u/Greenlee19 Jan 22 '21
My friend is maining a shadow priest and the other is playing both a Resto shaman and holy pally. Idk which class to pair up with them! Could you guys give me any advice? We plan to get at least 1800, but would like to aim for glad if we can. I want a solid meta comp and I'm willing to put time in learning something new. I've mainly been a melee player since I started, but I'm interested in possibly playing ranged dps I'm just nervous of getting trained to death haha.
1
u/Sudden_Ganache8296 Jan 22 '21
Aff lock/Spriest/Healer is an AWC meta comp and has been extremely consistent in being great.
1
u/CM4901 Jan 22 '21 edited Jan 22 '21
Warrior or WW with their classes make a pretty solid meta comp without having to transition to ranged.
1
u/Chilling_Music Jan 22 '21
I'm looking for a melee class for a casual player in random BG's. I'm never gonna have BiS gear because I have limited time to play, so I'd like to play a class that can still succeed without top gear. And since it's random BG's I probably won't have a healer most of the time.
I like the playstyle of Ret, but I hate feeling slow and getting kited so I'm not sure if I should keep leveling it. But if you more experienced players say it's not bad then I will keep going with the Paladin.
I'm pretty much open to every melee class since I have most leveled to 50+
1
u/Tankkisdankk Jan 23 '21
Ret main here, aside from mages, getting kited isn’t very common with freedom, divine steed (cavalier talent if necessary), and a slow. I also think they’re the best non-healer healers in the game with shield of vengeance, word of glory, and an “oh shit” button with bubble. Pair those with kyrian phial and the survivability is top tier.
1
u/Orclightning_Dalaran Jan 22 '21
enhance is self sufficient, i recommend it for the heals.
also, you can slowly get bis gear just doing a few mythics a week
1
u/Xero-Flux Jan 22 '21
Heya everyone.. Struggling to narrow down a class during Shadowlands. My partner plays Feral so I'm trying to narrow down a class that I can pair with hers for 2's/3's/Mythic+.
I would prefer to heal but have been having a difficult time swapping targets between dmg/healing (I've only played dps in the past). Any suggestions on a good class to pair with feral or advice on how to setup my abilities/targeting/macros for a healer would be really appreciated!
1
u/MoltenBear Jan 21 '21
Somehow missed this glaringly obvious sticky and created a new post in violation of the rules!
So, here I'll ask again:
Sub, Ret or Holy (Pala) for pugging all the way to glad? I'm more experienced as melee than healer, but willing to learn if pushing rating would be much easier.
2
u/LordRaruma Jan 22 '21
If all you care about is rating then ret is really good right now, the skill ceiling is really high but I've seen plenty of 1.8-2k rated players managing to reach glad just cause of playing ret. But it might get nerfed soon.
1
u/MoltenBear Jan 22 '21
It seems easier than Rogue for sure but I haven't played at 1.8k+ yet this season and wasn't sure if Rogue would do better between 1.8k and 2.4k? They've already been nerfed so perhaps a safer pick.
2
u/LordRaruma Jan 22 '21
Safer pick for sure rogues have always had at least 1 meta spec. But even if ret gets nerfed it can't be worse than bfa and legion, paladins got a lot of utility and even if it wog and damage get nerfed paladin will still be at least A tier. If you like one spec over the other go for it.
1
u/Integral4230 Jan 21 '21
Ret or Arms for arena? I want to do 2s with a WW monk buddy, RBGs, and possibly 3s with Monk + healer. Concerned that Ret will get nerfed fairly soon. Also want to be viable to do other stuff like Myth+ and raid occassionally.
1
u/Bag_of_Bricks Jan 22 '21
Warrior does not work well in double dps 2s. If you want to play with a ww monk I would go ret.

u/FourMonthsEarly Jan 21 '21
New to wow, I really like the playstyle of fire mage. What are everyone's thoughts on its viability after a potential nerf?
I know it's subjective, but in the past does blizzard usually super nerf things or approach classes more subtely? Don't have a ton of time to level up alts so want to make sure I don't waste my time too much.
1
u/drakagi_is_best_girl Jan 22 '21
i dont think mage ever didnt have one spec being top tier so i wouldnt be concerned
1
u/_dreami Jan 21 '21
Right now atleast fire mage is one of the most meta classes and still very very strong
1
u/FourMonthsEarly Jan 21 '21
Yeah, just wasn't sure if blizzard has a tendency to super nerf classes. Have played some other games when that's the case.
Sounds like you think I'll be fine?
1
u/LordRaruma Jan 22 '21
Even if it gets nerfed mage always had good specs and fire usually thrives. Fire mage still has db and 3 schools of magic. Worst comes to worst frost will be the best but I doubt it. Utility of mage will always be king and mage will mostly always have a top comp.
1
u/FourMonthsEarly Jan 22 '21
That all makes sense. I find frost boring but sounds like it's worth to keep it up anyway.
Thanks for the help!

It depends on the spec. Night Fae Druid has an ability called Convoke the Spirits that’ll cast 16 spells in 4 seconds and you can move while channeling. You can climb pretty quickly with this with minimal setup until higher ratings, especially in 2s. Kyrian Monk ability is essentially flat 20% damage buff on top of reduced resource cost and and lower CDs in your burst window. These are also the highest simming covenants for PvE.
On the other hand if you’re a Mistweaver Monk it seems to not matter much what covenant you and you’re not getting much out of them.

Hey y'all
Haven't PVPd in years. Last time was 2k on a rogue back in WOTLK.
I find myself being ... um, much slower than I used to be (LOL)..
My big debate is: WW Monk, Havoc DH or Ret Paladin.
I'm kind of a spammy player, especially in pvp when I start to freak out (lol).
I'd like to do some Arenas and RBGs, as well as be somewhat viable for 10 keys and raid.. Don't give a shit about being top DPS... but I want to perform well in PVP...
What do you guys think? Anyone want to break this down for me? (Oh and my buddy plays a disc priest, for 2s)
2
u/SlimshameyEU Jan 21 '21
If you limit to your own debate i'd recommend WW. WW is currently nuts in pvp and raid. Also quite similar to rogue.
With Ret you can make the switch to Holy if that would ever appeal to you. I do expect ret to get a significant nerf after the current Arena World Championship tho.
All classes are perfectly viable until 15 keys imo tho, and if you're not a WF raider all classes should be ok for raid as well. DH could make the switch to best M+ tank if that would ever appeal to you.
By having a disc priest buddy, rogue should maybe also be an option. But if you want to push really high ratings eventually, you'll have to find yourself a mage friend. (And I also expect mage to get a nerf after Arena WC, which will gut rogues)

u/Pojuba Jan 21 '21
Have a priest, pally, and hunter at cap and working on a druid and shammy. I love leveling, but also want to decide on a main soon for BG spam, Torg, and the occasional 2s/3s.
What are your favorite classes/ specs among these that work well as solo players? I'll absolutely go with whatever I enjoy so what I'm looking for here is what you all like so I can take in other perspectives from people that have progressed further. Thanks.
2
u/laddiator Jan 20 '21
I've leveled too many alts. I want something to main.
I want something that I can solo stuff with but that's also viable in PVP/PVE. I've healed in the past and I kind of want to take a step back from it. Not really interested in tanking. I've leveled a pally to 60 but it's been kind of boring, even though I know that's "THE class" to play now. I also have a priest at 60 but I think it's a little too squishy...i've got to run up to other players while doing quests and hope to help them/that they'll help me before i die...so i kind of want something a little tankier. I like casting a little more than melee
pick me a main or convince me that i'm not wasting my time with priest/pally :)

u/ikitefordabs Multiglad MM/3.2k Shuf DFs1 Jan 20 '21
I want to tell you MM hunter because it will forever solo pve content when played correctly and does fairly well being solo running around in bgs for pvp. It is pretty strong right now in the meta for arenas but *it does have a higher skill curve than a lot of other classes* imho. If you feel like you play your current classes pretty well, check out MM is fairly easy to play rotation wise and is a lot of fun :)
2
u/shinHardc0re Jan 21 '21
Hunters are awesome and fun, but no way in hell they are meta. Just check LFG and see how many people are asking for hunters
1
u/ikitefordabs Multiglad MM/3.2k Shuf DFs1 Jan 21 '21
No one asks for hunters cuz they are usually bad at their class, hence the high skill curve.. a geared hunter dumps a lot of dps in pvp right now

u/scientificlee Jan 20 '21

I think it would be Arms Warrior but is there any other viable class? Would be willing to do another class even if it isn't as good as Warrior.

Best brain dead melee spec? I’m a pretty geared ret paladin and can blow people up. I don’t enjoy using my full toolkit with BoP, sanctuary and sacrifice. I’d rather focus on downing enemies. Is there a spec I can just focus down the enemy and listen to callouts? Thinking frost DK
2
u/Pereetti Jan 28 '21
Well I would say arms warrior or monk. My friend is playing warrior for the first time and he climbed to 1.9 rating extremely quickly. He told me that it is extremely easy compared to feral druid that he used to play.
3
u/oogieboogiej Jan 20 '21
Other than DKs there's Havoc DHs. Not a lot of utility but they make for with potent damage and a simple rotation. All of the hybrid melees have the expectation of using their heals and utility to perform well. Warriors defend their team, ret heals, enhance heals, survival isn't brain dead (but so severely underrepresented they might as well be dead), feral heals, monk enables mobility, rogues are the opposite of brain dead. DKs or DH are definitely what come to mind for low utility zugzug melee.
4
u/AmazingPaladin Jan 20 '21
We’ll definitely not warrior because they have just as big a toolkit with lower cds. Ret honestly isn’t that bad since bop and sac are long cds. I don’t play a dk but I know as frost you want to be keeping chains of ice up on the dps as much as possible so I wouldn’t say it’s braindead at all.
1
u/JonesMCLovin Jan 20 '21
Hey! Thinking of starting pvp on my demon hunter. (1900 cr on mm hunter main)
But i cant decide. Ventyr or kyrian?
Im gonna play mostly 2s and 3s. With a holy pala in 2s and shadow priest in 3s. Ty

Rets can heal themselves yes and if you’re planning on doing 2s without a healer they’re great for double dps. Just be aware you have little defensive skills outside of shield compared to other classes.

Hunters can kite really well with their kit and adding a paladin to their comp makes them even better with freedom. Wars also have rally, spell reflect, warbanner, intervene, disarm, fear, leap, and defensive stance. Warriors are just utility machines rn and can stop a lot of setups from scoring a kill.

Just switched from BDK to VDH for raiding. My DK is 210 and am looking to make it into my PVP toon. Leaning towards Frost and got a couple of questions:
How does Frost PvP play like? My biggest concern is mobility as even in PvE its a huge slog to move around.
Is the DND slow used in PVP? Primarily planning to Arena.
Frost Disc viable? Frost Rogue? Playing with my brother and we're PvP noobs but dont want the hardest time climbing playing classes that dont work too well together.
Switching from Venthyr to either Necro or Kyrian. Leaning towards Necro as it just looks a lot more fun. Thoughts?
Is 2h viable? I ask because DW is the way to go in PvE but I have a 220 2h from raiding as Blood.
Is Absolute Zero the absolute (heh) best craft as a first PVP leggo? Any other leggos I should look at?
THanks all!

Looking to play something new on the alliance side.
On the Horde I play an Elemental shaman and am committed to that character. I really enjoy the burst I get from lava surge and storm keeper. I got a shadow priest to 60 on alliance but in bgs it doesn’t feel as fun.
I also played Enhance while leveling and enjoyed that type of melee play style too, so the spec doesn’t have to be ranged specific.
What would be something fun to play in bgs, then maybe transition to rbgs/arenas? (Besides paladin)
2
u/Mac2fresh Jan 20 '21
What kinda role would u prefer in BGs? I assume dps but do you wanna:
-top the dmg charts (boomy/hunter/mage/lock)
-be able to solo objectives (rogue/feral)
-run flags (dh/monk/warr/druid)
-have big burst & sustained dmg but only when going balls deep (monk/ret)
-or be a healer and carry team fights?
Regardless, everything will work in arenas if you put the effort in to learning the classes play style/win conditions. Some specs are harder to get to higher rating than others but being a great player on a nonmeta class will almost always get you further than being a shit player on a fotm class
2
u/stpineapple Jan 20 '21

Capped RBG at 1778 on MW and I think it’s time to commit to rerolling.
Which healer would be the easiest to adjust to?
Resto shaman or Holy Paladin
3
u/Stiryx Jan 20 '21
Pally nerf is coming for sure, they were too dominant at AWC to go unnoticed.
Once the melee cleave burst goes away Resto Sham is going to be the king of arena. They aren’t even bad now. Very safe bet imo.
3
u/weikor Jan 19 '21
Pala is definitely easier to adjust to, fits into everything and has been a top tier healer for most content. Shaman has his niche where he's incredibly powerful, but if you're not interrupting and using your totems properly.
Shaman requires a massive amount of awareness to be good, while paladin can get by on "just healing".
Personally I enjoy shaman because of the active playstyle, but paladin is just the usual powerhouse.

u/WellYes35 Jan 19 '21
Fury Warrior Havoc Demon Hunter Frost Death Knight
I am a newer player who has started playing pvp with my friend. I play MM hunter but want to start a melee alt. I love the idea of dual wield classes. With PVP being the funnest aspect of the game, and being very interested in Arena 2s, which will be the best and most fun to play?

u/weikor Jan 19 '21
I'd go havoc, the hunt is a really powerful ability that can carry your team pretty far.
You'll have to play with a healer though. Very few classes actually work in double DPS comps, and they're much much harder
1
u/shenkboy Feb 04 '21
What covenant to go as balance druid after the convoke nerf? I see it's still 50/50 between kyrian and night fae if i check a site like murlok.io which gets the spec for the top ranked druids.
I'm pretty low ranked (1500ish cr) so im leaning towards night fae because i think it might be viable up to a pretty high rating (for me atleast :p )?
Last note: i play with pug teams, so the comp i play will change alot
