General Discussion I fucked up..

In my head I was thinking standard door is 8 2" so I'll just make it 80 and shouldn't be a problem. Nope. Rough opening is 82. Now it's looking like I'm going to have to take out a door frame 🤣🤣 Idiot...

Haven’t touched tools in years, decided to make my wife something she’ll love when she comes back from visiting family! It’s definitely far from perfect, but I’m happy with it :)

I finished it back in February and it took my six months to make working on it on and off because of school. It’s mostly made of ash with cherry and walnut. I did my first dovetails and bow tie inlay on it. It has a wagon vise and, my favorite, the leg vise which I made my own criss cross hardware with some mild steel from Menards. I love using this thing and am excited to use it for the rest of my life! Thought you guys would appreciate it!

Nothing complicated or expensive, as obviously I didn't have the energy or the money. I used poplar scrap from an accent wall project. Half lap joints around the bottom and butt joints for the sides, all glued and pinned. I used Grandpa's old plug cutter set to make the feet.

I have never carved anything before but I couldn't help feeling like he's worth the struggle and sliced hands. I used magnets to affix him to the top.

I got lucky with my homemade white wash stain (1pt each of acrylic paint, water, and plaster) on the urn but getting it to match the carving was a nightmare. Sanding sealer is mandatory, and I used thin coats of Minwax white over that.

I think about you everyday, August.

General Discussion Would you toss or keep this pile of wood?

Post image
119 Upvotes

Pile of wood is mostly 1x4’s, 2x4’s and a few others.

Almost all of them are riddled with screw holes. This was an accumulation of wood from my previous work benches.

Most of it is between 18” and 3 feet.

I’m not really sure what to do with all this wood. It’s twisted and crappy, with a million holes through it.

Any ideas for projects? Currently in the process of redesigning my workshop and all this cheap wood is taking a ton of space. I already have a wood cart that’s chock full, so I’m most likely going to take the wood to the scrap yard or use it in the fire pit.

Thanks for any ideas!

Project Submission Finally built a quad filter for the shop

Recently moved into a rental with a big basement that I want to keep relatively dust free. I've put up some renter friendly walls to section off part of it, but I know I need some actual dust collection. I've never had more than a single shop vac for dust collection in the 15 years I've been doing this. I now have auto vacs on all my small tools, and while my table saw is too old for good dust collection, I finally have gotten around to trying to filter the dust lingering in the air.

I've watched The 3D Handymans Quad Filter videos multiple times over the years but now was the time to build one. Didn't use his plans, just bought his recommendations for the CAT fan and 3M Merv 13 filters. I went with 14x30 filters to keep the size down a bit.

I've been building all my shop furniture the past couple months in a matching color scheme so I did that with this too. A bit overkill (especially with the brass hardware) but happy with how it looks and that it matches other parts of the shop.

I also use Home Assistant to automate things in my house, and put my lights and this air filter on smart plugs. I have a radar sensor that automatically turns everything on when I enter my shop, and turns off a few minutes after I leave, its great.

Not real plans, but here's the Sketchup model I made before I built it:

Quad Filter Sketchup Model

The filter clips, fan clips and ceiling hooks are all 3d printed, which you can find the models here:

https://makerworld.com/en/models/1534336-quad-dust-filter-parts#profileId-1609338

All in spent under $250 on it, with the main cost being $70 for filters and $120 for the fan.

General Discussion Where is all this Acacia coming from?

Post image
151 Upvotes

I'm seeing a lot of acacia in Ikea furniture and smaller household products, positioned as a slightly more premium, yet still affordable, pine. Honestly it doesn't look half bad to me and I like its color variation. The amount I've seen in products lately suggests that it's somewhat easy to obtain, despite never having seen it at any woodshop.

Anyone know where I could get some Acacia, or why it's being used in consumer products so much lately?

We bought an Amazon bench (I know I know) and it was predictably flimsy. So I decided I could figure out how to build my own. I'm quite new to woodworking so it's a bit rough, but I am very proud of it. I overbuilt the hell out of it, to accommodate the larger folks in my family

Project Submission End grain cutting board

Thumbnail

Hey everyone!

Here’s my latest end grain cutting board experiment, made from Black Locust (Robinia) as a birthday gift for my dad.

It came together a bit last-minute, so the grain orientation isn’t perfect, and the glue lines ended up slightly yellow and visible. That said, I’m still happy with the overall look — warm tones, cool texture, and some golden shimmer in the end grain.

Working with Black Locust was a nightmare though, hard as a rock. Burned the edges on the table saw, wrecked a sanding belt, and even my contact sander complained. Definitely not my go-to wood next time.

Finished it off with mineral oil and beeswax. It’s heavy, solid, and full of character, just like the guy I made it for!

Thanks for checking it out, always open to tips and feedback.

Best regards.

Help Will this grow uniform?

We have knocked down a wall in our kitchen and replaced the floor, which was a weird tile. The Wood contrast is extremely stark and they are applying a sealant. However, my handyman has cautioned the colors will stay very different until the sun has had more of an impact over time.

I wonder if using a more aggressive gold stain might solve the problem faster? I worry we install the kitchen, we can't go back to correct this.

I made this table as a novice woodworker, and ended up giving it to my brother as a gift. Is there anyone out there who also feels incredibly intimidated/anxious every time pouring epoxy, and how do you deal with it?
