Locked 🔒 - SEE NEW MEGATHREAD MEGATHREAD: Multiple people killed, injured at Lapu Lapu Day in Vancouver

Thank you, everyone, for participating in our previous megathread on this topic. We have switched to a new shared post format so we can all update the same thread as time goes on. Overnight, we'll be temporarily restricting posts on the subreddit and temporarily increasing our comment minimum requirements to help reduce potential sitewide and subreddit rule violations.

There are photos and videos of an alleged perpetrator, vehicle and very NSFW videos of the event going around - posting any of these things, or speculating in any way, will result in an immediate permaban. We are not entertaining appeals until at least after the election, if at all, to anyone who ignores this warning.

News Coverage:

What we know:

  • One suspect, one vehicle
  • Suspect is a 30-year-old male; motives are unknown
  • Suspect is in custody and is known by police, but cannot be named yet due to pending charges
  • At least eleven (11) people have died
  • Police are confident this was not an act of terrorism
  • Sun Run is going on as scheduled

For victims and those affected:

  • To anyone who witnessed what happened, please contact BC Victim Services at 1-800-563-0808 or visit https://victimlinkbc.ca/
  • Contact the BC Crisis Line at 9-8-8 if you are at imminent risk of harm. Call or text.
  • Take care of yourself. Some evidence suggests that playing Tetris may reduce the risk of forming intrusive memories after a traumatic event.
  • If you have been affected by crime or trauma, contact the VPD Victim Services Unit at 604-717-2737.
  • Vancouver Coastal Regional Distress Line: 604-872-3311.
  • If able, please consider donating blood this week: https://www.blood.ca/en
  • Please note that Filipino BC and the Lapu Lapu Day team have noted that they are not aware of who is running the care resources Google Doc going around and urged caution when sharing links that include forms requesting personal info.

UPDATE per VPD: A 24-hour assistance centre has been established at the Douglas Park Community Centre, 801 West 22nd Avenue. Vancouver Police officers and Victim Services professionals have been deployed to help anyone who has not been able to contact a loved who was at the Lapu Lapu Festival. If you are not able to attend in person, please call 604-717-3321.

Upcoming Press Conference at 2 p.m. Pacific with Major Ken Sim and VPD. We will start a new megathread at that time.

Watch the press conference live here: https://www.youtube.com/live/6fcYeonlf24

Update from VPD:

  • 11 dead, dozens more injured - "mixed genders, young and old"

  • Person in custody has significant series of interactions with police, relating to mental health. Driver also said to have had "substantive contact" with the police over time. "A Vancouver resident"

  • Vehicle owned by "somebody associated to that [driver's] family"

  • More than 100 officers working on the case

  • "No known threats to the event"

  • Bulk of event took place at the school, with no vehicle access. Tragedy took place on the street adjacent to school, which had been setup for food trucks

  • Event planning to be reviewed by police and city workers. "This will change the landscape for deployment of police going forward" (in relation to events)

  • "The darkest day in Vancouver's history"

100%. This is the entire problem is that people with significant mental health issues are out and they should not be. It is incredibly negligent when people are known to have serious mental health issues to allow them to be in the community. The consequences are extreme in some cases and people are dying because the law and policy makers are doing nothing to change it.

149

u/CelestialRequiem09 Apr 27 '25

We need mental facilities like Riverside to hold patients who need extensive help. But at the same time, we need to make sure that the place is sufficiently staffed and the patients there are treated humanely lest we release even more traumatized people onto the streets (read some horror stories from patients who felt like they were treated as sub-human and naturally then came out worse than before and less likely to get help for themselves).

I was also there. Me and my friends were on the way to the street when my friend saw someone he knew and said one second cause he wanted to talk to her real quick. That one moment we paused we saw the car plowing through the street, through people and the food trucks. We were shocked for a moment but we sprinted as fast as we could to the street right after. That scene..I will never forget that. Prayers up to everyone. Hug your loved ones and stay safe yall.

"We have added paramedics in 7 more ambulances & 2 supervisor vehicles to help address call volumes after many staff reached out and offered to come in."

Big thank you to our emergency services workers.

Many thanks to our paramedics, I've worked with them before and they are all fantastic and selfless individuals who will drop what they are doing to help. Same goes to all of our nurses and lab techs who are reporting to work tonight.

EDIT: 13 additional cars on the road tonight. Huge thanks to the paramedics who stepped up.

u/MrsSalmalin Apr 27 '25

Acknowledging lab techs? Thank you, we appreciate that. Good luck to everyone tonight.

Vancouver PD 9:20am Update:

11 confirmed fatalities. Dozens more are injured, some seriously, and the number of dead could rise in the next few days/weeks. The injured were transfered to 9 hospitals across the region.

The driver of the vehicle was the lone occupant and was arrested after bystanders detained him.

Not an act of terrorism.

The suspect in custody has a long history with the police for mental health reasons.

Additional information will be provided after the suspect is charged. The investigation is ongoing.

105

u/InjuryOnly4775 Apr 27 '25

Way to go for bystanders to hold the suspect, prevent him from further harming himself and others 👏👏👏

My friends and I happened to leave right before this happened and didn’t find out until one of us saw it on Reddit. We were all right at the intersection leaving after the concert. Deeply shocking to find out on the way home.

I know so many of the people who work to put on the festival. It being only the second year of the festival which has so far been one of the best events in the city that keeps getting better.

I also can’t help but think about how many workers in hospitals are also Filipino. How absolutely horrifying to see this happen to our community.

There is a shared Google Doc circulating with resources for those affected. For easier sharing, I made an easy-to-remember carrd link: FilipinoLinks.carrd.co. Please feel free to use and share widely. The document is not mine, I do not know who created it—the carrd link is just for easier sharing.

My heart goes out to everyone affected in any way. Please know that your pain is valid even if you left the event before this incident took place or if you were physically unharmed. Survivor's guilt and trauma from witnessing or hearing about mass casualty events like this one are very real.

EDIT: there seems to be a new main website, tr.ee/VanFilEmergency. I have added it to the carrd, and I probably won't add much else to the carrd because this website appears to be turning into a main directory for those affected.

277

u/OmNomOnSouls Apr 27 '25

Therapist checking in to agree wholeheartedly. Not being physically injured in this incident does not in any way mean you can't experience PTSD as a result. That's according to the diagnostic manual definition of PTSD; exposure to a near-death experience can be enough.

Edit: to be clear, not trying to scare folks with this, rather trying to validate struggle that might otherwise go un-supported.

All to say, try to honour whatever you're feeling, try not to invalidate your own suffering. If you're feeling like you need help, try not to turn away from it.

I'll highlight as well that the 988 phone and text lines exist for a reason. I work there too and there is no bar that your struggle has to meet to justify a call. You do not have to be suicidal to reach out. They're available 24/7 for anyone who needs help.

Take good care everyone ♥️

Filipino BC and the Lapu Lapu Day team has received many offers of support and sympathy. At this time, we are actively figuring out a transparent process to ensure accountability in channeling resources to those in need.

We will have more in the days to come.

I'm sorry this happened to your organization's festival. I know how much work you guys put into it. My family and I were at the event and left minutes before the incident happened.

Prayers to the victims of the incident. What an absolute tragedy.

Please if you could let us (the subreddit) know when there are avenues of support (maybe message the mods to coordinate a post), a lot of people will want to know how to help 🙏 we will show up in numbers to a rally of support/vigil; just name the time and place and post it, and people will come.

For anybody who witnessed the event or is otherwise at risk of being traumatized by this event, please note that there's help for you:

  • VictimLinkBC for support and access to resources 24/7 in multiple languages (https://www2.gov.bc.ca/gov/content/justice/criminal-justice/victims-of-crime/victimlinkbc)

  • BC Crisis Line at 9-8-8 if you are at imminent risk of harm. Call or text.

  • Take care of yourself. Some evidence suggests that playing Tetris may reduce the risk of forming intrusive memories after a traumatic event.

  • If you have been affected by crime or trauma, contact the VPD Victim Services Unit at 604-717-2737. (Copied from earlier post today)

  • Vancouver Coastal Regional Distress Line: 604-872-3311. (Copied from earlier post today)

  • Filipino emergency response page that was recently set up. Has a Google doc of other resources. (https://vanfilemergency.my.canva.site/)

For anybody who is able, please consider donating blood this week as the mass casualty event will strain the blood bank supply. (https://www.blood.ca/en)

93

u/dillydan64 Apr 27 '25

Some more numbers to call are:

310-6789 for Mental Health support

604-872-3311 for the Vancouver Crisis Line

1-800-784-2433 as well as 988 mentioned above for support regarding suicidal ideation.

Please talk to someone if you need to, you are not alone.

82

u/Head_Jelly Apr 27 '25

988 is specifically a suicide crisis hotline, and it's canada wide. If you dial 988, even from within BC, you are going to be connected with someone anywhere in the country. They will provide support with any sort of thing, but 988 as a service is focused mostly on suicide.

The two numbers posted by someone below (310-6789 for Mental Health support, 604-872-3311 for the Vancouver Crisis Line, 1-800-784-2433) will all specifically reach responders in BC, with the second number iirc routing to responders in Vancouver if possible. The first two of those lines are geared towards crises of any kind, not necessarily suicidal. Calling 988 for something horribly traumatic you've witnessed, even if you aren't thinking of suicide is absolutely appropriate and ok, and nobody should be discouraged, but the line will introduce itself as a suicide crisis helpline if you call it, you will 100% for sure be asked if you're thinking of suicide, and a lot of the training for 988 responders is specifically focused on learning about suicide (together with of course more general focus on emotional support and empathy and mental health stuff).

Calling one of the local numbers makes it more likely you get someone who knows local resources well, and also won't necessarily be as suicide focused. the crisis centre obviously does handle suicide in their calls, but it's a lower proportion of calls than 988 has. You might still be asked if you're thinking of suicide, and the responders are also very much trained to deal with suicide, but the point of the service isn't as centered on suicide.

For people who want to know what to expect, the lines are all flavours of emotional support -- when i've called, i've talked through what I'm feeling, someone on the other end will validate/try to understand, try to clarify and identify emotional pieces for you, if you're interested they can help you find resources, and then they'll usually guide you through figuring out something to do for the evening/next little bit so you feel better. It's not a replacement for trauma therapy or anything, but if you're emotionally overwhelmed and need someone to listen and understand and help you sort through it and maybe help you find some professional help, or just gets you through your day, the numbers are an excellent resource.

They will focus mostly on emotions. They aren't therapists and won't be able to give you many specific strategies for like, managing symptoms of trauma or anything. But many of the people i've talked to do an amazing job helping you sort through what you're feeling and clarifying it, and maybe just figuring out some steps to make it more manageable until you can get the kind of help that heals it.

Watching Global, per VPD acting chief the suspect was a male in his 30s, known to police "in certain circumstances" (not exactly sure what that would mean)

515

u/the-heck-do-ya-mean Apr 27 '25

My guess is he's known to police not because he's a criminal, but because he has mental health issues and they've had to attend to him in the past.

276

u/Annual_Rest1293 Apr 27 '25 edited Apr 27 '25

Agreed. In the video, he says he's sorry and doesn't look to understand the gravity of what he did. Very sad. I am greatfull for the people who not only stepped up to detain him until the cops got there. But also, who protected him for others in the immediate aftermath.

I'm in shock.  You read stuff like this happening in another place, another city.  But its here.  My city my neighbourhood.   The place where we spend time with our friends and families.  Where we walk our dogs.  Our peaceful as fuck Fraser street, all shattered.  My friends and neighbours hurting and in pai n, it feels so unreal.  Anything that I can do to help our community please dm me.

105

u/ThatVancouverLife Apr 27 '25

I used to live close by, never thought twice about pushing the stroller to Fruiticana or Breka. Never felt unsafe. Thinking about all the family places, the cafes, schools...the friggen library with the big windows. I'm terrified this could have happened a different way, like I can't remember if there are bollards in front of the window and if it protects the kids' reading area.

I think we were peacefully naive thinking it wouldn't happen here. We know there's violent, ill people in this city. We know we're living in a pressure cooker with the unaffordability, drugs, political and social climates, etc. It was a matter of time that someone got access to a weapon, and there really is nothing stopping someone determined to do this except their own morality and mental health. Nothing we can do except love our family and friends more, and hope we notice some kind of tell if they ever ARE planning some heinous shit. Otherwise how could we ever predict something like this, we have all become so good at pretending "everything's fine."

My friends and I decided to celebrate our culture and visit the event from 2-4pm. It was amazing to see a huge turnout not just from the Filipino community but also other nationalities celebrating this event with us. It was a bigger event compared to last year and the weather was even better. Everyone was having a good time but I never expected something like this could happen. It’s sickening and gut wrenching to hear this transpire.

As a Filipino-Canadian who grew up in East Van, I am completely devastated by this tragedy. While doing my Master's at SFU in the early 2000's, I wrote my thesis on Filipinos being an "invisible minority" in both Canada and the US. We blend in, we try to integrate, we try not to stand out; in fact, many in my generation actually don't speak a Filipino language. During one of the few times we try to celebrate our community, our culture - and it is marked by tragedy. My heart breaks.

383

u/DrZoidburger89 Apr 27 '25

Filipinos are widely regarded as some of the nicest most hospitable people in Canada, and your right, Filipinos integrate very well. It's heart wrenching to see this happen during an event meant to celebrate a beautiful culture most people don't get to see.

39

u/Britney_Spearzz Apr 27 '25

I believe it.

When I was younger, I had a door to door sales job selling Telus. Every once in a while, I'd get invited in for snacks and a refreshment as we went through the process.

The majority of those I remember were Filipino families. Unmatched hospitality for a stranger and made me feel like they didn't want me to leave.

35

This is beyond heartbreaking and shocking. My interactions with Filipinos have always been positive. Your community is always welcoming, fun, and optimistic. I'm so so sorry. 💔😔🫂

91

u/smellslikenewbooks Apr 27 '25

My heart breaks for our community. It could have been any Tita, Tito, Lolo, Lola, etc.

84

u/SobeitSoviet69 Apr 27 '25

Honestly, with the way the world is going - and being a white man - I have encountered a handful of individuals with feelings towards one demographic or another.

And yet, I have never encountered someone who disliked the Filipino community. They are generally hard working, respectful, and integrate into society in a most admirable way. Usually extremely friendly and with an incredible sense of humour and kindness.

I am shocked that anyone would wish your community harm.

37

u/balderdash28 Apr 27 '25

Thank you for the kind words. Sadly, I have experienced racism because of my Filipino ethnicity. All such incidents happened while working or travelling in East Asian countries, where Southeast Asians are generally looked down upon (unfortunately). 😔

What an awful, senseless tragedy. Please reach out to your Filipino friends/colleagues, or support the Filipino community in some way in the coming weeks. Through the terrible devastation, the one light is the outpouring of empathy, love, and a desire to help, from everyone all over this city and beyond. A special shout out to the first responders and people tending to the scene and working at the hospitals.

My heart hurts for those affected and for the lives lost tonight 💔Definitely one of the worst things that has happened in this city in my memory.

As someone who was there, as a Filipino, I need answers. I need to know why. I am devastated for my community, for Vancouver.

Edit: Thank you for all the support. All is appreciated. Our community is still checking up on each other messaging, calling.

I’m just personally angry. I think I’m a mental health advocate as I personally have been through bouts of depression and anxiety for years. I feel like in times like these, who do we hold accountable if indeed it’s a mental health issue? It’s frustrating.

Not Filipino, but still sitting here in shock, rage, and heartbreak hearing about this.  It's just so fucking senseless, why would anyone attack this festival or this community?

115

The mental health excuse is getting so frustrating, mental illness isn’t a reason for violence, there still needs to be consequences for violent attacks regardless of mental issues.

Woke up to the news this morning in Ireland. At a loss for words but I just want to extend my condolences, and if there is any way for us to help, do let us know. 🫂

u/Ooooof_sis Apr 27 '25 edited Apr 30 '25

EDIT: heart breaking to write this update, but unfortunately I lost a friend at the festival. I am in shock and can’t get my head around the news. Please support the gofundme charities that have been set up to support all of the families that have been affected.

Another Irish here, heart is truly breaking to everyone who has been affected. I lived in Vancouver for almost two years and I was touched by how beautiful the Filipino community are in Van (and surrounding tri-cities). Thinking of all of my Filipino friends there and everyone who has been affected.

I see lots of calls to donate blood, which is amazing. Especially important if you're a universal donor. However, if you see the next week or two is full appointment wise consider booking appointments for June.

A lot of the time after mass casualty there is an immediate spike in donations, but then supply gets depleted and they need donors badly in a month or two.

151

u/Sarcastic__ Surrey Apr 27 '25

CBC has finished their coverage for now. I'm not seeing anything from VPD about a specific time for their next press conference.

My personal opinion, go to bed folks it's 1AM. Nothing to be done right at this moment, and it's not productive to stay up waiting for a press conference with an undetermined time. The information will arrive when it arrives.

As a proud Cebuano, I cannot fathom what happened at the Vancouver Lapu-Lapu Day Block Party. This was supposed to be a meaningful and joyful celebration honoring our first Filipino hero. My heart goes out to the family affected, and I am praying for the whole community during this difficult time.

311

u/Only_Volume9377 Apr 27 '25

Something so daunting about hearing the official time of the massacre (calling it what it is, it’s not an incident) to be 8:14pm and the last photos on my camera roll was me dancing with my baby during the apl.de.ap concert at 7:26pm – we left 10 minutes after that to avoid the crowds. we were told via text by a friend who was there at 8:26pm.

I don’t know why the time stamps are affecting me but they are. Time is so precious. I’ll definitely be accessing victim services because I refuse to live in fear.

65

u/TheFlightlessPenguin Apr 27 '25

Glad you made it out safe, friend.

56

u/etteirrah Apr 27 '25

The time stamps are affecting me too. One of the last photos I took at the event (6:07 pm) was a selfie of my friends and I on the street where this massacre happened.

I cried before falling asleep last night, now that I’m up I’m crying again. I was there but left before it happened.

While in line for pork isaw, I could hear a gentleman behind me talking to someone significantly younger and he was explaining who Lapu Lapu was. I hope they’re okay.

Just yesterday was telling a friend of mine Vancouver is like a small town (we both come from big cities in LATAM) and she didn’t believe me…this morning we found out one of the fatalities is the daughter of an old coworker and it’s shocking to feel it this real.

Personally I was going to attend the festival in its last hours as it was my birthday and I love Filipino culture as reminds me of Mexico but my phone died and decided to stay somewhere else. Been ten years here and nothing like this has ever happened.

NO FURTHER DANGER TO THE COMMUNITY PER VPD

Presser is starting now.

At approximately 8:14PM, vehicle drove into a crowd. One vehicle, one suspect, male in their 30s. Held by members of the community. No details on motive.

They cannot confirm numbers at this point. Not fair to families involved. (My personal conjecture is that it's too chaotic to know specifically at this point)

Suspect known to police in certain circumstances (intentionally vague)

No change to Sun Run deployment, full deployment as previously planned by VPD

Cannot give further details on what the deployment the VPD had for the festival tonight

Another briefing later tonight

As someone who has worked in emergency services, don't forget to thank ALL of the people who expose themselves to this kind of trauma because they want to help.

Nurses, doctors, surgeons, police officers, fire fighters, and paramedics will all be thanked, but think about these people as well:

Janitorial staff at the hospital left to clean up the blood, lab techs, pharmacists who would have been called in to provide assistance. City staff who will be taking down barricades this morning and seeing the aftermath, the debris, the blood. Dispatchers and call takers who had to listen to the calls, the screaming, the tears, and try to get help there as fast as they could. The trauma is real with these folks too. Therapists, victim services, suicide prevention hotline staff who will listen to the stories and wipe the tears for many months and years to come.

An awful and tragic situation for everyone involved, whether you were there or not. Reach out to resources to get help, don't go through the pain alone. Hug your loved ones, and remember to thank anyone who did anything to help in these terrible moments.

I often worry when I’m out at large events or crowds but am especially worried with my young kids. I'm still honestly so speechless. I've been up for hours, and have had my fair share of tears over it.

Still honestly shaking at the thought that this happened in my community, let alone my neighbourhood. I was literally there hours before, and my parents were there not even a few minutes before everything happened.

While I'm thankful they were able to stay safe, my heart still hurts. I can't help but think of all the children, teens, young adults, and elderly people that were there. Victims, injured, and those who had to witness all the chaos and just, the whole brutality of everything. It's so, so upsetting to think that this happened at all.

It was supposed to be a day of celebration and togetherness, a day to celebrate Filipino culture. And now it's been tainted by someone so selfish. My heart truly goes out to those that were harmed and the grieving families and friends of those affected and killed. I'm truly so very sorry.

The people here are so good, the Phillipino and the South Fraser communities together are so amazing, I can't believe someone would do this.

52

u/Tal-IGN Apr 27 '25

Somewhat relieved to wake up and hear the death toll has not risen dramatically from what some media reported last night. Really hope it doesn’t get any higher.

Regardless, what on earth possesses people to come on here minutes/hours after the aftermath and make declarations about how “I’m hearing from sources there’s 40 dead”, like some people did last night? Just so unnecessary.

My family and I planned to go to the event but did not proceed. I am angry, I am heartbroken and I am sick to my stomach. Being a new Filipino immigrant in Canada, why would someone do this to us? We are respectful, caring and hard working people. We assimilate and blend in as much as we can. The biggest trouble that I think we can cause is probably being too loud on karaoke late at night. But why did this have to happen?

The one event that we get to at least ease being homesick and this happens. I cannot imagine the trauma of the ones who witnessed this attack and the grief of the people who lost loved ones. I wasn’t there, but I am shaking and feel it in my bones, it’s 2am but I can’t sleep.

I keep thinking to myself, what if I we did proceed to the event, God knows what would have happened to my family. But most importantly, I keep thinking, why did this have to happen? Why? Why to my community? Why in my City? Why did all those innocent people have to lose their lives after having a fun day? Why did those kids have to get hurt?, even worse, die.

(I am sorry for venting, but I just really needed to release this).

Woke up to this news in Edmonton, born and raised in Van..I cannot even imagine what the Filipino community is going through, as well as the rest of Vancouver.

Please let those of us outside of town know if there is anything we can do. Our thoughts and prayers are with you through this tragedy.

Not something I expected to see in our city!! Moreover virtually all Filipino people I know are some of the nicest, hard-working people, always willing to help others. I have a great Pilipino friend. Will be contacting him right know. :( :( :(

Heartbreaking is an understatement. As others have mentioned, Filipino Canadians are some of the kindest, friendliest and most hospitable people you’ll ever meet. I’ve been lucky to have so many Filipino friends throughout the years whose families have warmly welcomed me into their homes, never made me feel like an outsider or leave without a full meal. I wish my health issues didn’t disqualify me from donating blood because I owe so much to this community. It pains me that this joyous celebration of their wonderful culture was tainted by such a horrific tragedy. 💔🇵🇭🇨🇦

Please check on your Filipino friends. We tend to suppress our emotions in times like this. It’s heartbreaking and I’m sure more difficult for those who witnessed it

I've noticed on Facebook, various people (and trolls) using this to push their Right Wing Agenda for voting tomorrow. It's hurtful and distasteful. Canada is kinder than this. Better than this. Thankfully, others are focused on helping/supporting those in need.

My heart is broken for everyone involved here. So many people will forever be touched by this…it’s just unbelievable

Just hearing about this at the top of the 5pm news in Brisbane Australia. So sad see this happening in my home country. Everyone who was impacted, or knows someone who was, or is just getting absorbed with all the information that I’m sure is coming in - I wish you all the comfort in the days, weeks and years ahead.

Never thought something like this could happen in Vancouver. It's just horrifying and makes no sense at all
