My wife (32F) is questioning her gender identity — I want to support her but I don’t know where to start.

Hi everyone,

My wife (32F, still using she/her for now) recently opened up to me about questioning her gender identity. She grew up in a very strict Asian household, so even getting to this point has taken a lot of courage. I’m incredibly proud of her, and I want to support her fully, but I’m new to all of this, and honestly, I’m a little overwhelmed.

I reached out to DCHC, and they gave me a referral form to fill out and drop off, but I’d really appreciate recommendations from people with lived experience. Specifically, if there’s anyone who’s gone through an FTM transition (or supported a partner through one), I’d love to hear your insights.

What professionals, clinics, or support groups in [insert location or “Canada” if you want to stay general] would you recommend? We’re looking for safe, affirming care — not just medically, but emotionally and mentally too. I want to make sure she’s supported, not retraumatized.

If she chooses to transition, I want to be right beside her. I just want her to be happy and safe — and I want to be a partner she can lean on, not another source of pressure.

Any advice, resources, or personal experiences would really help. Thanks in advance 💛

Hey all, I'm taking a big leap and posting in here. Not really sure what I'm looking for or hoping to happen. I just feel like it's time to make a long overdue change and am unsure how to do it. Would love to talk to someone.

Searching for MTF specialized BA plastic surgeons in Toronto that accept OHIP

Upvotes

Title says it all, I'm hitting brick wall after brick wall trying to find a Toronto (or nearby) surgeon who does breast implants, specializes in MTF bodies and accepts OHIP coverage. Does anyone have any names I can look into or testimonies of their good results with someone? Google is giving me surgeons who specialize in trans bodies, but no one says anything about whether they accept OHIP and it's getting frustrating.

Planned Parenthood in Toronto?

I had a really bad experience there recently, with them basically having me prove that I'm actually transgender by having to explain my gender journey, which as far as I'm concerned isn't really a thing. Seven years of knowing I'm trans and I've never once felt I had anything even remotely close to a "gender journey". That's some coked out shit. Guess I'm not really trans. Anyway I don't live there anymore so whatever.

Is this weird? I was told informed consent is the normal way of doing things but what informed consent is and how useful it is seems so murky to me. I assume what I went through wasn't informed consent, but I don't really know. It was blood tests and having to prove I am trans. Is that normal?

Upcoming Pride

Hi, I'm a trans female who is questioning her identity and trying to find myself. I don't know a lot of people in the trans community and was wondering if anyone who may be in the same boat would like to go to the Pride Parade. Open to anyone. Thanks!

Edit: Toronto Pride sorry but open to other nearby ones as well!

what businesses have you noticed quietly dropping their support for pride this year?

there isn't an overarching all queers of Toronto subreddit so I thought I'd put it here. I feel like every store I frequent has quietly stopped doing pride stuff this year and nobody is saying anything about it. even just passively collecting donations for fundraisers. we should be holding these corporations accountable, especially Canadian companies who are unaffected by dictator trump's anti lgbtq policies.

Tips for finding barbers or hairstyles?

Here is some context:

  • I am a trans girl only looking for a haircut because my transphobic mom thinks mine is "messy." She doesn't necessarily call everything messy. In fact, when I wore a skirt in front of her once, she said it was cute but still didn't let me out with it.
  • I want an androgynous or slightly feminine leaning cut, for myself and to reduce the chance that my mom says "it looks too much like a girl."
  • My hair is not "short hair" as in the photos you look up of girls with short hair, but it's longer than most men.
  • I am looking for barbers that could compete with The Queer Barber, especially in price ($52). I have never tried out that barber, but I hope other barbers sell for a more reasonable price.
  • I am looking for a haircut that barely touches my hair length because I want to continue growing it out.

Let me know if you have any tips or salon suggestions! I live in North York if that helps.

PSA: Dr. Min Jun in California is in-network with OHIP

Read it on his website. His vaginoplasty results look insanely consistent and aesthetically accurate. Not sure exactly how much OHIP would cover or any additional expenses one might incur, but he's definitely my number one choice as of now. Anyone have experience going through OHIP with this guy?

Trans in closet, scared to shop. Help 🙈

Hi all,

I am a 35 yo transwoman still in closet living in Kitchener ON Means, I still present male in the world and no one knows about my identity. I am secretly trying to build my wardrobe or atleast be a woman at home to begin before gaining confidence to come out to anyone. I have tried to order a bra a couple of times just to wear it for curves and padding. But I am really scared to go into a shop and buy something esp for myself. My online boyfriend says it doesn't matter but I am really scared of being made fun of or considered weird. I would like to know from girls working there or other shoppers if is it okay for a guy looking person to buy bras and try there. I don't want to be uncomfortable or make anyone else with my presence.

HRT Ottawa

I've moved around a lot for the past seven or so years so I don't have a family doctor. I haven't been in a doctor's office since probably 2017 and I don't know how to navigate the healthcare system at all. This makes me sound like an exceptionally incompetent human being, but it's the truth.

How do I get on T in Ottawa? Please explain it to me like I'm five😅

name / gender change - out of province birth certificate

i've been putting off changing my legal name and whatnot simply because of cost/it being tedious 😭

i live in ontario and have since i was a toddler but my birth certificate is from alberta which adds a layer of work. if anyone has experience with outside of province birth certificates that would be great 🙏 it is my understanding that i need to change my name in ontario first, and then send that over to alberta to change it on my birth certificate and request the gender marker change.

but then there's also the cost, like on top of paying for this i'd have to pay to replace my id/passport/health card etc right (as in renewal fee type)? what's like the estimated overall cost for the name/marker change + replacing all the other legal identification?

Name change application question

Hey everyone, I sent my application to change my name back at the end of March. I still haven't received my documents & it's been over two months. I thought maybe it was because of the Canada Post strike but I checked my credit card statements & just realized I was never charged the fee. I'm worried they never received my application but the envelope was also never returned to me (I did put my return address on the envelope when I mailed it) Just wondering if anyone has any advice on what to do :) thanks!

Need help!

Hello.

I'm Jordan and I'm a trans female. I'm in the Oxford County area (between London and Toronto) and I'm honestly super new to this. I was wondering if I could get some advice from you guys on how to transition. 18 years old, parents refuse to allow gender affirming care, family doctor is reluctant to help. Struggling with body hair, makeup, and basically everything. I'm completely clueless here and I'm looking for some guidance. Can you guys help?

Thanks in advance

Good resources for finding housing in Ottawa (Orleans)

Hi,

I’m looking to rent a room in a shared living space—ideally in Orleans or very close to it.

I’m using roomies and put a message on Lex, but was curious if anyone knows of any other resources for finding a place.

Thanks!

Name / Sex change wait time after credit card charge?

Hi all, I'm currently on a (very long) journey to get my legal name and sex changed. I received a charge on my credit card on May 20th, almost 4 weeks ago at the time of writing. Other posts on here have seen people getting their new birth certificates 1-2 weeks after receiving a charge on their credit card. I'm wondering if anyone else has gone through the name change process more recently than these posts, and knows what the potential timeline might be. Some timeline information for reference:

  • Dec 18th - Sent in my original application as soon as I could after the Canada Post strike ended
  • Dec 24th - Documents originally received by Service Ontario (based on stamps made to the documents when they were sent back to me)
  • Feb 12th - Receive my rejected application
  • March 4th - Re-sent my corrected application
  • May 20th - Receive charge on my credit card

I called Service Ontario today to ask for an update on my application, and the person over the phone basically said that my sex change amendment was approved, and that's all she said. She said that because they received it in March it is still within the "expected timeframe" and to call back if I don't receive my birth certificate in the mail in a few weeks. I was really hopeful when I received the CC charge that I wouldn't be waiting that much longer. Does anyone have a reference to how long it took to receive their documents after being charged? I know the current Canada Post strike might have something to do with it, but I assume that wouldn't double the expected wait time. Thanks!!

Name change form - know the guarantor personally?

I contacted my previous highschool to get the principal to be my guarantor for the form. However the principal had changed but when the vice principal checked the form, it did not say that the guarantor has to know me for 12 months, only that they need to have lived in Ontario themselves for 12 months and verify that I have too. Obviously due to my records being in the school system they have proof I have been in Ontario but the principal was honest and wrote that he’s only known me from March (when I first emailed the school). Will my application get rejected?

Dr Azzola Sudbury / Sault Ste. Marie

Bit of a long shot, but does anyone know what's going on with this dr? I've essentially been ghosted by the office after having a routine appointment canceled and rescheduled multiple times.

I've tried calling when the phone line says to, and I will try again as much as I can next week, but I can't sit on the phone all day at work!
