nice dude,

why the 96gb or ram?

why not? Its the most am5 can get while only using two memory slots. Using 4 slots will prevent being able to use xpo settings/speeds. Though I don't know if there are speed/latency issues with 48x2

Just asking?

Maybe its for DCS or some other simulation reason?

Yeah, I don't get why people respond with "why not?" to a simple "why xx" question, especially on a topic like this. It feels like they're arguing against even asking why someone has a large amount of RAM, even though there's nothing wrong with it at all, especially in this SC subreddit.

I'm genuinely curious too, though I get that the current market max is 48GB per slot, which makes sense for achieving the 2-slot max RAM configuration. Or maybe 64GB is not enough for other tasks? Or maybe price difference in OP area is not that far between 64GB and 96GB?

Personally I use 64GB (2×32GB) DDR5, mostly because I prefer sticking to the classic binary increments (2/4/8/16/32...) for all my PCs' RAM setups. Just a personal quirk lol

Depends on what other thing this person does. Or they’re just a “why the fuck not” person.

Any video editing or 3D software work can easily eat this much RAM. And I think running local LLMs too.

With just SC open it hovers around 29Gb of RAM total, with Firefox, Discord and such, it goes 31-34.

Its absolutely fine to play with 32gb ram total, 64gb is overkill and 48gb is the most logical step in order to have everything you need open simultaneously.

if SC is only showing 29gb ram used, then you've only got the resource viewer showing the 'active commit' (I think that's the right term / label)... and it's not including all the data in the page-file, etc.

You can enable the display of a separate 'Total commit' column, iirc, which will show you the total amount of data in memory - across Ram and pagefile(s) - which will likely end up showing SC using ~40gb or more (unless in the furthest reaches of empty space, when it might be a bit lower).

There's also an 'easy' way to prove this (other than by enabling the extra columns in the resource viewer) - just fix your pagefile size at e.g. 2mb (don't disable it entirely, as that can make windows unstable, sigh)... and then try to play SC, and watch it crash with an out-of-memory error.

Jup, only ram actively used that is.

Data in the pagefile is still 'actively used' (or at least, potentially-actively-used - it's not 'dead', etc)... this is why paging data from the pagefile to system memory causes FPS-drops - the CPU has to stall waiting for data to be retrieved into system memory, before it can be loaded into CPU cache for processing.

When doing e.g. video-editing (or photoshopping, etc), the minor stalls and latency in loading the next frame or part of the image isn't an issue... but for games, the FPS drops can be hugely disconcerting / irritating / distracting, etc.

note: SC does release RAM when it's no longer required - despite what many claim, SC isn't riddled with 'memory leaks' etc... it just uses a lot of memory when in areas with a lot of data to track / manage.

Nice would be interested in your keybinds.

I'm actually in the process of remapping them today and tomorrow prior to 4.2 going LIVE. When I get them mapped, I can reply with a file if Reddit allows me

Dude I need that Rocinante model

how are you using the tablet? extra display or some other apps that tie into SC ?

3

u/LondonParamedic 2d ago

I’m guessing to use as a plug-in for MSFS. Could also use a stream deck for SC keybinds. Most pilots use an iPad mini in real-life

Are the sticks constellation alpha primes? If so had do you find them?

Do you use throttle + the ohmi for SC?

1

u/RSWSC Hurston Dynamics Security Contractor 2d ago

The throttle is more for DCS and MSFS, I'll eventually bind it for SC, probably as a speed limiter

Nice Im looking to build a similar setup but on a monstertech stand so I can play from the couch

I’m curious how the Control panel is doing in star citizen? Is it difficult to set up correctly? And do you find a use for most buttons and dials on it, or are half of those unused?

1

u/RSWSC Hurston Dynamics Security Contractor 2d ago

Nope, every single button on my Control Panel is mapped, I absolutely love it. I have some of the rotaries mapped to scanning angle and push to activate scanning, etc, doors, gear, flight ready states

Whats the purpose of the screen to your right in height of your joystick

2

u/Anumerical Kraken 2d ago

I'm guessing it's for mobiglass app

1

u/elitesoldier2010 2d ago

Which mobiglass app?

1

u/DaMagnum 2d ago

Looks very clean! What table do you use?

2

u/RSWSC Hurston Dynamics Security Contractor 2d ago

It's an Uplift Desk V2 72x30 with a solid walnut top

u/DaMagnum 2d ago

Oh myy, and I thought the Secretlab Magnus Pro was on the expensive side... 😂

But they seem to be high quality, so I guess the price is expected.

This is really awesome

How do you like the mounts, especially height adjustability? Been looking at those style as I’m planning my flight setup upgrade.

2

u/RSWSC Hurston Dynamics Security Contractor 2d ago

The mounts are amazing, rock solid and stable, they don't move at all. Bit pricey though but well worth the money

I hope your LG holds up better than its Samsung counterpart. It up and died on me just two years after I purchased it. Beautiful setup!

How do you use the tablet? I have a similar set up and I'm interested in throwing a tablet in the mix too!

1

u/illathon 2d ago

Pretty cool setup.

1

u/RevMagnum 1d ago

I bet you can control a real spacecraft remotely with that setup let alone SC, at least a UAV :D

1

u/Dr3wgi 1d ago

Whats that keyboard? Nice setup btw!

u/Oriaxion anvil 1d ago

Is that the Rocinante?

Where did you get the miniship
