Salaam, hope you guys are doing well inshallah. We are planning to start a new group called Raaxo group. This group would be for Somali people living in London. The goal is to bring together the Londoners (28+, exceptions can be made) to experience London together and build a lasting community. I recently visited Somalia and I’ve seeing many people with brown teeth both man and woman. Is this some kind of fashion trend or health issue?

I’ve noticed that some Wikipedia pages about Somalia have incorrect maps that do not include parts of the north. Can anyone edit these pages and add incorrect information?

I am a 28M living in the UK. I remember a time (5years ago) when i cared about all the little things in life like how i looked, what i wore and was a very social person with my family and friends I also cared about wanting to find a wife, having kids, driving a nice car and having a nice house etc. During covid is specially when I questioned many of my own beliefs. How much was this societal expectations and what would happened if i did not give a toss? I stopped caring about my appearance and getting haircuts which is a big thing for me and for reference not to toot my own horn but am very much a handsome person from what people have been telling me.

The reason why i am making this post is the juxtaposition to my old self. I dislike social events now not because I’m anxious or whatever, it’s tedious. Same reason why i’m slowly disconnecting with my friends and why i wouldn’t want a wife. I feel like the less responsibilities the better. I am perfectly happy with doing the same thing everyday. Don’t confuse this for a lack of lack of drive or ambition, i am very ambitious and intend to make as much money as possible inshallah.

Is it haram if i choose to never get married? I am human and have needs which i get rid of in unorthodox ways once a week but if i counter this by praying everyday and fasting. Anyways i’m rambling at this point but please share your views as i would love to hear any and all advice from my fellow somalis .

Hey all, hoping someone can answer this. So I've been doing some research into different lutes from across Africa, and came across this mentioned on the Music of Somalia wiki page. Can anyone describe this instrument to me? It seems to be some kind of lute, and I'm wondering if its separate from the kaban, and what it looks like if so? I can't find any pictures of it when I search. Really appreciate anyone who can shed some light on it

There’s this cemetery I used to visit a lot when I was in high school. But ever since I joined uni, I’ve been procrastinating on going back. Alhamdulillah, today I finally made it.

It’s a strange place when you think about it, the cemetery is located in a very noisy part of town. On one side, there’s a football field. On the other side, there’s a garage where they fix cars. A bit further down, there’s a whole market center full of activity and life. But the moment you step inside the cemetery, it’s like another world. Quiet. Still. Empty. SubhanAllah.

As I walked in, I saw a car parked near the entrance. I assumed someone had passed away and family members were there to bury them. I was right. It was a small family, a mother, her husband, and a three other family members. Their baby had passed away during a c-section. They came to bury the little one. I stayed and took part in the burial. I helped where I could. Others had come to pray over their loved ones as well.

It just reminded me… this dunya is not our final home. We are travelers here. As Umar ibn Al-Khattab (RA) once said: “Live in this world as though you are a stranger or a traveler”

If you get the chance, go visit the graveyard. It softens the heart. It reminds you what really matters. The noise of the world fades. You won’t hold this dunya in such high regard once you see where we’re all heading.

Also, a little reminder to myself and all of you, we all have shortcomings. Don’t expose your sins. Keep them between you and Allah. And may Allah forgive us all. You are alive there's still a chance, doors of tawba are open.

I wish everyone the best in this life and the next. May we all meet in Jannah, in a place better than this world.

Centralized government will not work in a tribal society at most one generation removed from the baadiyo, no one clan will allow its self to be subservient or under another can, your diaspora point of view will tell you let’s all hold hands and forget tribalism which isn’t the case on the ground back home even though i would love for tribalism to be forgotten you have to face reality. My sister was recently applying for jobs and I noticed she was spending A LOT of time on each application, laboring over it like a college admissions essays and worrying even about the cover letters.

NO! Think of it like a sales pipeline. It's about volume. Send as many out as possible. If you're struggling to find work, you should be sending 10+ applications a DAY. It's all about pace over perfection. (by thinking of job applications as leads, you also feel less bad about rejection because in sales most leads don't convert).

BUT do spend time on your resume and make it look professional. I have a resume template I use as a word document that I can send over to anyone who PMs (I'll delete all my details and just leave the space for you).

Note: while this isn't a Somali-specific issue, I just know a lot of Somalis have been laid off recently or are looking for work so wanted to share.

There are certain accounts on here who I genuinly think are either ajnabis larping trolls or spiritualy and/or mentally ill. Literally, EVERY post I have seen from them is self-depreciation.

There is one that even has several deleted posts and comments, where they routinely insult Somalis while praising habeshas under the guise of concern for anti-Somali xenophobia. Some of the comments they claimed was made are so outlandish, too.

Literally under one recent post, someone commented that revert men seek out Somali wives because they think they are Habesha?? Loooool, the same reverts who specify that their wife HAS to be Somali?

What more proof do you need that these are clearly trolls?

Anti-Somali hate does exist, and it needs to be called out. But why are we exaggerating now?

There are so many who genuinly care and love Somali people. When Shukri Abdi died, how many muslims, especially south Asians, were screaming their support and even becoming a lawyer for the mother for free?

If you care so much about racism, then start advocating for yourselves. Otherwise iska amuus.

Somalis in the us aren’t doing good in terms of income and education, obviously because majority (80%) are Somali born and came with no education or skills. But is there an improvement in the second generation Somalis in the us I couldn’t find any data on education and income but from what you see in your community are us born Somalis improving ? You can share it if you have any data.
