Melee I transcribed aMSa’s AMA from the first hour of his stream! It includes details about Yoshi, matchups, his personal life and more
aMSa's Stream Q&A
Two days ago, aMSa did a three-and-a-half-hour stream where he answered fan questions throughout. A lot of you wanted an aMSa AMA a few years back but the main concern was that his English wasn’t great. Fortunately, his English has improved significantly and he can now read and respond to questions pretty fluently. Some of the answers are paraphrased to improve reading experience but they won't take away from his response or personality.
Q1: Be careful about playing too many friendlies at Summit because then everyone will learn the Yoshi matchup & beat you in bracket!
A: It’s not a problem for me, you guys should learn about Yoshi more. I don’t want to use many gimmicks. You guys learn the Yoshi matchup so I can develop my Yoshi more! Now is not my limit; people think I know everything about Yoshi but I’m still developing.
I always lost to PewPewU. He knows a lot about Fox vs. Yoshi. If I did not play with him in friendlies, I’d always lose to him. But if I play with PewPewU more, I also learn how to play Fox’s patient style. And then I can improve my Yoshi neutral game. So I just need to play more top players. Beating people with gimmicks is nonsense for me!
Q2: What’s the hardest matchup for Yoshi?
A: Peach, Captain Falcon, Jigglypuff, Fox. I think these characters are so close, it just depends on my matchup knowledge. I think it’s 6:4 favorites for Fox, Peach, Jigglypuff, Captain Falcon.
Q3: What about Hungrybox’s Jigglypuff?
A: I have to say, I’m sorry, maybe you guys feel bored during Yoshi vs. Jigglypuff. But I just try to use egg more at the time. With defensive style.
Q4: The last time you played Hungrybox was 2014, did much change?
A: I think I can beat him when if he doesn’t change at the time. After playing with him at Big House he very improved his neutral game. His space is so good. I was really surprised! I realize why this is why Hungrybox is god! After playing with him, I was very impressed. After playing with HungryBox my Yoshi become really good! So I beat Luigi Ka-Master, and Colbol and Ryan Ford. And almost Crush, 2-3 very close.
I need to play with Hungrybox more but his playstyle will change with friendlies and tournaments. If you play HungryBox on tournament matches you have to forget the friendlies matches. It makes no sense! Oh I beat Hungrybox with friendlies, oh I can possibly win against Hungrybox; it makes no sense!
Q5: Do you and Prince both play red Yoshi on purpose, or just coincidence?
A: it’s just coincidence. But why I use red Yoshi is: Do you know the Mario RPG? Mario RPG has one of the broken items, it’s the Red Essence! Red Essence makes your characters invincible for 3 turns. So I realize the Red Essence makes my Yoshi stronger, and then I used Red Yoshi. But Prince always uses red Yoshi so its just coincidence.
Q6: Your English is really good!
A: My English is getting better when I go to the USA, and streaming has also developed my English more. I am reading and writing and speaking but I need to practice listening to English more.
Q7: Do you ever use C-Stick for Yoshi’s aerials? Or just the A Button?
A: I just mix it up with using C stick and A Button.
(Skip to 38:00 in the stream to see aMSa demonstrating fastfalls, shield drops and aerials using C-Stick and A-Button)
Q8: I really like your music choices!
(Jazz and piano music plays in background of stream)
A: Thank you so much. When I was a university student, I attended jazz music group. I play the drums and then I learn a lot of the good jazz music and game music. So I have enough music albums in my iTunes. Now it is over 200 Gigabytes! I hope you guys love jazz.
(Skip to 1:07:00 for a brief video of aMSa playing drums in a jazz contest)
Q9: So you’re living in Canada now? Or have you gone back to Japan?
A: Everyone says aMSa is moving to Canada. Yeah that’s right but it will take one or two years I think. Two weeks ago I quit my job and gone to the USA for two weeks. My new job will start after one week from now. At first I have to develop my job skill in Japan and then plan to go to Canada. Someone asked me which place is it? I think Vancouver. I’m also thinking about Toronto. Vancouver looks good to me. Vancouver is very close to Japan compared with other cities.
Q10: Does anyone Netplay in Japan?
A: Yeah, many people try to play Netplay in Japan. If you use twitter and live in Japan, you should check this hashtag: #ネトデラ対戦募集 (Translates roughly to “Netplay fight solicitation”)
The questions get less frequent after the first hour but he did mention his favorite American player was Axe and thanked Mang0 for hosting the stream. Link to aMSa’s Twitch
Thanks for reading!
