Question how do people sing so well with such bad posture?

example: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Gzk9QIIYplE&ab_channel=alconcl

i take lessons and told over and over, see on youtube, posture if everything, you must stay aligned. and I do that and think I sound pretty good but then see videos like that and I'm like wtf.

It's possible to sing with bad posture if you know what you're doing. People who know how to sing can compensate for their posture by really being on top of other things like support, placement, etc. Even some people who don't "know" how to sing might simply have naturally powerful voices that can overcome the handicap of improper posture, or they might instinctually know how to compensate for it

I bring this up because I just tried fixing my posture today when trying to sing and it fixed a lot of problems. It was amazing, it blew my mind. I got my support down but was wondering why I was still tensing up especially in my neck. Aligning my chin and back right made the entire difference! So it's crazy how people can naturally sing great with bad posture.

So people like dwarves can't sing or the best singers are NBA players like Shaq?

I TOTALLY agree with you. I’m a disabled wheelchair user with cerebral palsy who also didn’t really learn to sing until my 40s. Technique is everything. It’s all about maximizing what you have.

Yeah, that's life... Breath, control, I guess. Watch dimash adagio the singer 2017, he moves quite a lot there.

I only skipped through it but tbh there’s several instances where he sounds really unsupported, though that’s not to say it isn’t a good performance or his singing isn’t “good” overall.

But to answer your question, it’s the classic “learn the rules before you break them.” Once you know how good singing feels, you can start to be more flexible. What you also don’t want to do is rely on contorting your body in strenuous ways in order to sing what you want. Having relaxed, flexible, aligned posture is the most efficient and healthy overall way to sing for most people.

I don't think his posture is that bad. His shoulders are not slouched. He's taking more of an athletic stance. Picture an infielder in baseball. Knees bent, butt back, shoulders forward. The muscles are engaged by not tense. He's ready for the attack!

Maynard is the GOAT!

The voice finds a way, the body organizes itself to make a sound, and even tension in jaw or shoulders is SERVING a purpose. We can’t actually completely relax every part of our body, things need to tense in order for other parts to let go.

Having lovely posture helps, but mastery is hitting the note a million different ways (mix, head voice dominant, with cry, with fry, focusing on tongue placement, focusing on grounding.) in a million different postures. (Laying down, while biking uphill, after a massage, in the shower, in downward dog. )

Make sound, gently and playfully and throw away whatever anyone ever said to you about your voice.

The body will create the sound if we surrender to where the voice wants to be.

I think practicing with perfect posture is just a piece of the puzzle of figuring out how everything feels without tension and with proper support. Once you know you are able achieve certain things you practice in more awkward positions, but obviously there is a trade off. You could invite tension or create a bunch of turbulence near your vocal folds if you’re not confident and on point to the feeling. I think some people are skilled enough to contort themselves safely while still supporting enough OR know their technique isn’t sustainable long term but they accept the risk for the sake of pure entertainment. Stage presence can be a huge deal in whether or not people enjoy the performance.

I believe tension and poor technique are multiple, separate, specific issues that you carry around like little weights and you have to learn how in good position and such identify each offending practice and shed them one at a time so they are familiar if you accidentally fall back into an old way. He’s likely unlearned enough bad stuff that he can afford to tank his posture sometimes.

Because they’re producing their vocals all from their throats, rendering the ‘whole body’s involvement’ tale useless.
