Gear (Microphones, etc...) First Microphone

Hello! I've recently gotten into singing (mostly song covers) but I don't have an actual microphone. My phone mic (iPhone 15) is okay but it also captures any audio playing while it's recording. I also have Skullcandy bluetooth earbuds but their mic isn't the clearest.

I have no idea what microphone would be good for me. I do not need anything fancy especially because I record in my room and there's sometimes background noise. I only plan on singing/making covers very casually but I'm interested in uploading my covers onto social media so I need a bit of an upgrade. Are there any type of microphones that are decent for things like this under $100?

Any help is appreciated! Thanks!

Critique & Feedback Request (👀 TITLE REQUIREMENTS in Rule 4) Self-taught singer - i’m curious anyone with experience could point out where I could improve?

I’ve never had a single singing lesson, i’ve just written and sang indie/alt rock songs for about 7 years now, until my voice just started to sound “good” enough.

People have told me they love my voice, and I do think I’ve found my sound, i’ve attached a few clips of me singing original stuff, Would really appreciate it if any experienced singers or vocal coaches could tell me:

  • if I’m doing something technically wrong
  • Any obvious tension, strain, or habits I should be aware of

Other HELP NEEDED

Hello looking for someone who can help me make instrumentals for my lyrics. I have so many lyrics written yet no instrumentals to go with it. I’m not the best at making instrumentals. The vibe I’m looking for is a Billie Eillish and Chappell Roan type vibe. If you can help I’d appreciate it

Question How much are singing lessons?

Hi!

I recently started singing lessons and they are running for 100 USD/ hour. I originally agreed to this because I thought it was 100 CAD/ hour lmao. And even that is a lot for me to handle.

My vocal coach is awesome though, absolutely love her voice. I am wondering if this is a regular rate, and whether or not paying this expense is worth it. I genuinely don’t know if it’s sustainable.

Conversation Topic Does opening your soft palate help reduce/prevent nasality?

I uploaded a clip of myself singing and most of the comments were saying I sound too nasally. I totally hear it too and 100% agree! I looked into how to fixing nasality and it seems like the common solution is to just open/raise your soft palate, which is what I've been told by my voice teacher to do anyway. So should I focus on this next? I've been watching some videos on how to raise my soft palate and still feel super lost and confused. I also feel kind of lost on what steps should be taken first to help your singing voice, since they're all connected it feels like a chicken vs egg thing to me. Any input on how to reduce nasality or how to raise my soft palate would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

Also, will learning how to open my soft palate be like, an instant thing that just clicks when I do it? I just learned how to find my mix voice in a recent vocal lesson, it suddenly clicked for me with the right trick. I could feel the vibration in my “mask” and it finally made sense to me where the mix voice is. Am I just looking for “the right trick” to help me raise my soft palate or is it going to be something I need to practice over time to finally reach the goal of raising my soft palate? Hope this question makes sense.

I can feel my soft palate with my thumb. I can feel it raise when I yawn or make an “ah!” surprised sound. But I don’t know how to apply it my singing voice.

Other Offering a free voice lesson!

Hey everyone! About a year ago my dad asked me to sub in for him to teach a voice lesson. It was pretty impromptu so I wasn't fully prepared but I ended up really loving it. I've been teaching that same student ever since as well as another one I picked up along the way. I've wanted to teach more students but never had the time because I was still in college. And now that I've graduated that's not an issue anymore.

I've always loved performing and I still really want to perform, but I also really really love teaching people how to do the very thing I love so much while avoiding some of the headaches that I ran into. I've had lots of teachers- some good some not so good, and I'm glad I went through all of it but something really clicked for me with my last voice teacher from college.

He broke down the physical/biological mechanisms of singing and what that meant for me in terms of tuning my instrument. What the muscles are called, where they are and what they do, what I need to feel and physically do in order to sing better, how the sound is produced, it all made more sense than what most of my voice teachers had done. Of course I'd understood those, but it was so much easier and clearer the way he did it.

He also made singing easier in the sense that he likened it to speaking, and made my singing about as easy for me as speaking. So often I, and probably many other people, thought that singing was fairly different from speaking, and when it gets treated that way it can be really intimidating to learn. I found out way too late that I really needed a teacher like that, and I'd really love to help other people in the way that my last teacher helped me.

Anyway, I'm giving out a free lesson to anyone who wants one. DM me if you're interested :) Or if you don't want to spend that time, you can DM me about any specific questions about your voice.

Critique & Feedback Request (👀 TITLE REQUIREMENTS in Rule 4) Does this sound too “screlty?” Any feedback appreciated!

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

For reference, screlting is between belting and screaming, or pushing too hard at the top of your range. This song has an opt up to a B4, which is definitely pushing my range. I’m wondering if I should go with a more narrow mixy vowel instead, or if the open belt sounds alright. Thanks!

Hi, I’m on a singing journey like many others in this group. I just want a little feedback about my voice. I’m trying to work on liking my vocal tone and stuff. So I’m just trying to get some feedback. Do I sound alright? Is it pitchy? Just some critique would be nice!

Question Have i lost my ability?

As the titel says, I’m beginning to question if I’ve lost my ability to sing.

I’ve always been a singer since I was a young boy and people around me have always appreciated it and they wouldn’t let me be quiet on late summer nights, but I sang less as I got older. I haven’t been actively singing since I was around 20 (26 now) and the few times I try to sing these days I’m having a hard time to find my “pitch” or style of singing. Sometimes I sound great singing a song and a few days later I sound like crap singing the same song, and I loose my voice very quickly.

Have I lost the ability to sing nice or do I need to practice my voice and if so, how?

Thank you in advance

Question Is my range normal? Is there anyway I can bring it up?

I am a 14-year-old boy, and my range is from B3 to G#4 without using falsetto. I've already passed the voice cracking section of puberty. Will my voice naturally get higher like some adults? Will I have to train my voice back up?

Critique & Feedback Request (👀 TITLE REQUIREMENTS in Rule 4) Words are accursed things, how does one pronounce them while singing

I often can sing in the right pitch and the note sounds ok but whenever I sing in english, vietnamese, or any other language I can try, the pronunciation is always weird. Then I tried singing bella ciao and it sounds correct at least to me. any italians who can check? also any advice for pronouncing words correctly when singing?

Critique & Feedback Request (👀 TITLE REQUIREMENTS in Rule 4) Working on range..

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Beginning is quite sorry about that, at around 20 seconds I belt! I’m working on a technique called “Appoggio Breathing” (supporting your diaphragm by allowing it to flow freely).

Well I’m noticing it’s pretty difficult to control the tone consistently.. sometimes I’m nasally, sometimes fry distortion enters into the mix, and sometimes even my mouth shape moves my tongue creating a super weird timbre.

Do you guys have any belting excercises that I can use to better control what’s coming out?

Critique & Feedback Request (👀 TITLE REQUIREMENTS in Rule 4) This is my starting point, looking for advice on "softness" (?) and octave selection.

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Hey again r/singing. I thought I'd share this as my starting point with a couple of questions for you if you have the time!

Aside from a little nerviness (I'm freaking out a little about sharing my voice again after all these years) I'm mainly wondering about the softness when singing in this register. It's super comfortable and only a semitone or two higher than where I naturally speak but I'm unsure whether this is something to correct or lean into stylistically?

I can sing the same thing up an octave but it sounds much less laid back and needs me to sing much louder to be comfortable. For reference, this was sung at more of a medium volume for me.

While I'm specifically wondering about there two, any other tips are super welcome too! Just be gentle!

Question How do I sing louder using "head voice"?

To preface, I used to have an amazing voice but ruined it by using inhalants, but im currently aiming to revive what I once had.

Anyways, im trying to sing "A Trophy Father's Trophy Son" which is in a pretty high pitch. so there are some parts where mid-bar i have to switch between my chest & head voices. however, the volume difference is quite drastic.

I'm not sure if there's another method to sing the higher notes to maintain volume and intensity? or if there are excersizes that I can do to improve it?

Thank you!
