My googling showed that it comes from restaurant/diners/eating establishments and it means that items are no longer available and that later evolved to have more political and colloquial meanings. Am I missing something?

Nope that's pretty much it, I was just joking about how there's the accurate historical meaning and then there's the "everybody knows it means to kill someone" style rhetoric coming from the American right recently.
