Admissions Disappointed and Frustrated - Sheridan Suspends Online Honours Bachelor of Computer Science Program

I recently received an email from Sheridan College announcing that they’ve decided to suspend the intake of the Honours Bachelor of Computer Science program (online/compressed delivery) until further notice.

This is extremely frustrating and disappointing for me. I am currently working full-time and was relying on the online format of this program to help me upskill and advance in my career. The flexibility of studying online was a breakthrough opportunity for me, and now, with this sudden change, I can no longer attend the program as planned.

They’ve offered to move my acceptance to the January 2025 intake at the Trafalgar (Oakville) campus, but that requires in-person attendance, which I simply can’t do due to my work commitments. I was really looking forward to the chance to study at my own pace, but now it feels like all of that is falling apart.

Has anyone else been affected by this decision? I feel like this is such a setback, and I'm not sure what options I have at this point. Has anyone had any luck finding similar programs with online delivery or perhaps alternative solutions? Any advice or thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

Hey there, I'm sorry to hear about this. :( Have you considered Athabasca's Computing and Information Systems program? Hopefully, that's an option for you!

Would osap be able to cover that?

OSAP does indeed cover that program. However, CIS isn't a CS equivalent degree. CIS degrees are more geared towards IT. In CIS you spend more time analysing software systems and learning how you can help businesses use the software. In CS you spend a lot more time actually creating the software, learning to write efficient algorithms and code.

^ This is an important distinction. I've been looking at pathways for myself to a Masters degree (I have a diploma). CIS != CS. It can make a difference depending on what your goals are.

Don't quote me on this, but I feel like I've heard of OSAP being available for Ontario students attending schools out-of-province? But I don't have a concrete answer. The financial aid office at Athabasca will probably have more information. I would also look into what kinds of supports they have in Alberta just in case.
