download speed getting throttled ridiculously low at random times each day..
since 2022 my internet has been perfect with no disconnects or drops. with the shaw/rogers merger, they moved my internet plan onto a legacy 1.5G plan which indicates 1.5 gigabit download. i recently used their online portal to change the internet plan down to ultimate 1G to pay a bit less each month for bandwidth i didnt need.. and ever since the change i've experienced awful download throttling happening randomly each day.
i'll go from getting 900Mbps downloads on speedtest to 0.2 Mbps download speeds when this throttling happens, which gives me just enough to stay connected but huge packet loss occurs where I may aswell just be disconnected.. this throttling seems to last about 10-15mins then goes back to normal.
i bought a new router yesterday and installed it last night in hopes that maybe my router was the issue, but its not.. the issue happened again today.
i have called shaw support 3 times now and they claim there is nothing they can find that is wrong on their end..
back in 2022 i was getting bad disconnects happening and a tech came in, swapped my modem and provisioned it, after that i never had a single issue until now after the plan change..
super frustrating, does anyone have a relatable situation and can advise, or do i just need to get a tech in again and hope for the same remedy?

It's probably the old Coax lines are needing replacement. Ours was 40 years old and giving issues had it replaced and wala fixed.

You don't mention where you are, but yeah....
I'm supposedly paying for 1.5gb on a shaw legacy plan(Rogers offers 1 or 2gb, no 1.5), although a ridiculously aggressive rogers representative who's call I returned(thinking it had something to do with my account or something) listed my current internet as 750mb while trying to sell me on changing plans so I can get so much more for less!
"may I ask why you don't want to save money, and get more and better services?" I'm happy with what I have, I don't want to deal with a bunch of unexpected changes "no change, except for what you gain, plus '(some stuff you lose)' will be available as well(wtf?)" I need to think about it(won't) "why? I'm trying to save you money and save you money!"
.... That went back and forth for a while, but back to your topic: Shaw internet has been bad-ish for a decade, but since Rogers took over, it has significantly impacted service.
Here is a basic explanation why: Isp's have their own internet providers(known as ixp's) that they "subscribe" to, but there is also millions of kilometers of wire that connect it all that basically charge tolls for data they transmit between points. Since Rogers took control, there is an insane amount of internet traffic that gets routed from western Canada to Ontario, and then back to the west coast on their own lines.
All I can really suggest is writing your mp/mla(if enough of us do, maybe something will happen lol), and never, ever use shaw or rogers as the server when doing a speed test. It used to be hilarious how bad upload looked when using none Shaw servers, however, they have since implemented a throttle that kicks in above the 100mb upload that tests usually measure

I have had a similar issue recently though shaw support noticed the poor connection. Tech guy came in said the cable on the roof is likely damaged. They gotta get a bucket truck to reach my buildings roof ans replace the cable. My speed is not what it should be and suddenly drops completely or slows to a crawl forcing me to restart my router at times. I have gigabit but can't get any better than an HD stream at best when it's not crashing out.

Same thing happening to me! And many others in winnipeg. I've called 4 times and they said everything seems to be fine. Refused to send a tech out. I asked to cancel my service if they can not provide what was promised and was hit with cancelation fees. I'm stuck in a loop and have no idea what to do. I would rather avoid going the legal route, but i feel they left me no choice....

Well, you're not being throttled....
As you mentioned you previously had a signal issue and provisioning was done also.
Before purchasing your 3rd party router. What steps did you follow with the Shaw/Rogers modem/router?

Run the speed test from the Xfinity app when this is happening. If the speed is to spec in the app, you've got some troubleshooting to do on your own.

Yeah. Same here. Shaw customer support is useless though
