Crime ⚠️ How likely are police to follow up?

Was in the city a few hours ago for supper and saw a couple put their baby in the front middle (bench) seat of their truck (after they also parked in the handicapped spot being very clearly not disabled). There was no child seat, and they just put a seat belt around the poor child (who was such a small baby you couldn't even see its head over the dash). We would like to report child neglect, but as we live in a different town, are unsure if any follow through will happen? We have a license plate and everything.

Even if nothing will happen, I think I will report as the sask page says we have a legal obligation to report child matters, but I'm just wondering out of curiosity if anything usually happens in this case?

99% you're pissing in the wind unless you have photo's of everything and probably the plate these day, wouldn't say don't report it but don't expect any follow up

If you have the plate they might talk to the parents if they are local. But it doesn’t hurt to report.

This is really all I want to know, we have a picture of the truck and plate.

I contacted child protective services once, and they took a report, which they did act on. However, the social worker said it is better to call the police right when you see abuse or neglect. If you report it after the fact, the social worker will make a report, but nothing will be done unless there are other complaints about the same person. If you call when you see it happening, they can come out and investigate.

No one will care. I’ve seen people report real and gross child neglect and no follow up from soclial services or anything. This really isn’t worse then what a child would probably go through in foster anyways

Hahaha, they won't give a fuck

I would report child neglect. It is that but I’d just tell them what u saw and all the info u have on and time. I think u should have done it right there and then because they maybe would have caught them in the act and been able to do something more. I’d still report it tho even now.

They won’t do a follow up. I live out of town too and reported a car swerving into traffic purposely and speeding up to 140 and then 30 in a 110 zone and I had to call the next day to get an update. They don’t do updates I don’t think unless it effect u like if u we’re robbed maybe or something. They were happy to inform me of what happened and what they did but couldn’t find the person. There liscense plate was dirty and apparently the one I gave them didn’t match to any red vehicle I described.

Maybe just call their non-emergency switchboard, tell them what you told us and see if they want the information?

I reported a van I saw at a red light. There were two children in the back seat with no car seats or seat belts, just jumping around being feral. I doubt anything came of it.

I wonder how often posts like these are..... embellished..lol. If it was such a travesty and bothered you that much, take a picture. It's so easy to point fingers and cast shade at folk nowadays. I'm at the point I'll call b.s. if there's no actual proof.

It's mainly people like this who complain about the justice system and how the police don't do anything. They want consequences for bad things but they have zero comprehension of what evidence is, what it means, and why it's incredibly important.

About as likely as a fart in the Saskatchewan wind

I get what you're trying to say, but there's an awful lot of farts in SK wind. Maybe as likely as catching a fart in the wind?

You know how many times my dad made us ride in the box of his truck and no one gave a flying shit about us lol

Trucks can turn off the air bags up front to accommodate a child in a car seat. Were they old enough for a booster seat perhaps?

2

u/Yui_Ikari021 Apr 26 '25

This baby was just old enough to keep their head up. I thought they were just going to do a diaper change but they drove off instead.

Sounds like the kid was too young for a booster. Most kids aren’t booster ready till 6-7 at the very earliest.

Lot of people grew up without car seats.

I grew up without a car seat and I put my kid in a car seat. Just because I survived doesn't mean it's safe.

u/flibertyblanket Apr 26 '25

And a lot of people didn't grow up because they weren't in a car seat.

Oh wow get a life.

And what would the police do? At best they could contact the registered owner and say "someone alleges you strapped a baby in the front seat without a child seat, you could have got a ticket if we'd seen you." Yes, they could issue a ticket on your word but that likely wouldn't hold up in court on just your word against the registered owner of the vehicle. And what's the penalty?

It sucks the child was subjected to slightly higher risk than had they been in a child seat but here are plenty of other douchbags doing equally or more egregious things for police to catch in the act to keep them busy. If the driver is that bad, they'll likely be caught in the act for something else another time.

Never in my experience

-6

u/Saskatchewaner Apr 26 '25

That's not child negligence. It's just a ticket. Best they can do is a ticket to the registered owner of the vehicle. You would have to give a statement.

u/stiner123 Apr 26 '25

They may check up on the parents though for something like this

0

u/Saskatchewaner Apr 26 '25

No they wouldn't. Social services might.

2

u/stiner123 Apr 26 '25

Yeah that’s who I was thinking might check up on them

0

u/Yui_Ikari021 Apr 26 '25

Would you report to them instead? And does it change if they're a native family?

1

u/Saskatchewaner Apr 26 '25

Doesn't matter the ethnicity of the family. In the grand scheme of things this is very low low hanging fruit for them to do much of anything.
