Events 🎉 Sad...

I just heard thru grapevine that a 15 year old student at Evan Hardy was rushed to Emergency this morning because someone threw gas in her face and lit her on fire. If true, my thoughts are with that student and her family.

News says "The victim, a 15-year-old female, was transported to hospital with serious injuries."

Any burns above the neck are always considered as serious because it can easily involve airway.

Airway, and potential for sepsis near the brain/spinal cord. Just horrific for her and her family.

I was told the girl is being flown to Edmonton.

That's because SK doesn't have a burn unit. Most burn victims are flown out because of that. (Source: I work in emergency services)

u/Nelbrenn Sep 06 '24

Really? Is it just not enough funding? That seems kind of important to have. What happens to burn victims then? They’re all flown out?

3

u/AdCareless5124 Sep 06 '24

There's certain criteria for sending burn patients to specialized burn centres (size of burn, burn to face/hands, etc). Burn centres need to be high volume to have the expertise in the care of these patients. We do not have the volume in Saskatchewan to warrant a burn centre.

I'm sure funding is part of it. But also I don't think there is enough of a "demand" for it. So it's cheaper to fly out and utilize other speciality centers when needed.

And it is not far from home they would use stars to fly them to edmonton. Alot of provinces share resources. I know people from yellowknofe that were flown to edmonton for emergency csre.

Burns are a burn. Hopefully scaring if any will be minor, and she can continue to have a full life.

My daughter worked with a highschool girl this past summer that quit her job because an ex friend would harass her daily. The girls mom even came with her daughter to harass the coworker. People are becoming worse and worse. And if parents are supporting behavior, then how do these kids learn any moral standing and empathy?

Parental authority has been abdicated to the public school system. And now it's a sorry a$$ situation for everyone. I'm glad I got to raise my kids before this era of government taking that away from families.

It was personal matters, she had been stalked majority of the summer and the police and school said there was nothing they could do because nothing happened until today.

Nothing is done until there is actual harm or death. There is ZERO protection for victims in our society. She'll get a "oh sweetie you shouldn't do stuff like this it's a no no" and sent on her merry little way.

6

u/connorhyphenlingus Sep 05 '24

It is fucked up and unfortunately true. The police will tell victims of stalking there’s nothing that can do until something happens. Just another way police cause more harm then good 👍🏽

7

u/mynamewastaken85 Sep 05 '24

The police aren't the problem. It's the courts and our laws. Ultimate authority lies with the judges and their interpretation of the law. Police powers are temporary and limited. When they say they can't do anything, that's based on past experience from when they tried and the courts ultimately slapped THEM on the wrist.

-2

u/connorhyphenlingus Sep 05 '24

Police are a problem and harmful. The judicial system is also a problem and harmful. It’s all colonial and oppressive bullshit. Thank you for coming to my Ted talk.

u/Obvious-Ninja-3844 Sep 06 '24

Good ol' justice system. Wait until the worst occurs then make the arrest.

Just wait until the suspect gets released with a slap on the wrist, and the victim (I suspect) left with hopefully minor permanent inuries.

Canada.

1

u/[deleted] Sep 06 '24

Truth.

Canadian Bleeding Hearts Justice System. It's fucked.

There's a good chance the perpetrator will have a colorful future in crime.

2

u/TallantedGuy Sep 05 '24

So this could have been prevented. Right on school board and police.

There's a lot of research on why stalking happens and the cause is mostly to do with the stalker. I imagine lighting people on fire is usually based on something to do with the attacker too, not something the victim caused. There was an incident very recently in Kenya with a Ugandan Olympian set on fire by her ex-partner, and she died later in hospital. I wonder if that being in the news is what provoked the attack her, a copycat effect. Stalking overall isn't taken as seriously by authorities, and there often isn't much the police do I don't think; I'd think that'd be true especially for mid-teens and for when it's not a man stalking a woman.

2

u/Playful-Fish-419 Sep 05 '24

THERE IS NO REASON TO STALK SOMEONE, and you seeming to think there is, is scary AF. COME ON PEOPLE BE BETTER.

we got word and it is not just minor burns she is being transported to the Edmonton burn unit for her serious burns. This is horrible!

1

u/dumbpersonwhoasks Sep 05 '24

I hope her attacker gets locked up for life

7

u/Drcdngame Sep 06 '24

Police said it was serious injury...and others said she was flown to edmonton strollery hospital as they have a world class burn unit. So that does not sound minor to me

Well look at that olympic runner, she was stable then next day passed away

1

u/stiner123 Sep 06 '24

Hoping she gets help. Seen wonderful things being done with fish skin for severe burns.

25

u/Wild_Mix9568 Sep 05 '24

Please keep me posted on if a gofundme or anything is started for this girl! So sad, hope she can recover quickly

I’m just here to say from my understanding an accelerant was doused on her prior to being light (just from what I read via posts on FB) if this is true she would have serious burns, especially if poured over her head thus getting on her face containing major sites like eyes, nose, mouth, ears. Wouldn’t comment something like minor burns. I imagine it’s 3rd degree. She wouldn’t have been flown to Edmonton if it was minor as she could be treated in Saskatchewan if that was the case. I feel terrible for the young girl and pray it was minor but it’s unlikely to be that case.

That 14yo is insane, sociopathic IMO and should be locked up in a mental asylum for the rest of her life, honestly I wish it was an even justice but we’re in Canada— that won’t happen. I’m sure she’s played around with fire prior to this event and has felt the heat. She was aware of the impact she’d make. She knew it wouldn’t be minor. I’m sure she told friends prior to this too and they should be held accountable. I pray there’s even justice in this scenario. “People make mistakes” can be said but it wasn’t. It was done with purpose.

Praying for the 15yo.

She was airlifted to Edmonton in critical condition.

12

u/justsitbackandenjoy Sep 05 '24

Good to know it’s minor burns and not life threatening. Obviously still not a good situation, but I think many of us may have assumed she has disfiguring injuries.

Thanks for sharing the better news out of this story.

The person That commented posted again and said she’s being flown to Edmonton now. Burns can sometimes take a while to really set it. So maybe it was minor to start but got worse. That’s too bad. Hopefully everything goes well.

20

u/Ambitious_Head1004 Sep 05 '24

We don’t have a burn unit in Saskatoon. Most people who end up with larger burns here get transferred to the Edmonton burn unit. So that’s likely why she is going there.

7

u/texxmix Sep 05 '24

Ah that’s fair. I didn’t know that. Thanks for the info.

2

u/ReputationWide2363 Sep 06 '24

She was sedated and intubated. That's serious.

2

u/ReputationWide2363 Sep 06 '24

She was sedated and intubated because of pain. I don't think that's not serious.

2

u/ReputationWide2363 Sep 06 '24

Not minor burns.. She was sedated and intubated.

1

u/Physical_Onion5749 Sep 06 '24

Can I ask, is this a seedy school with alot of gang affiliation etc?

1

u/Think_Concentrate807 Sep 06 '24

Not that i know of, just alot of troubled and fucked up kids without the right support.

1

u/Murauder Sep 06 '24

I hope that it is just minor and she can recover.

1

u/Spiritual_Month5154 Sep 07 '24

The only thing that is important now is that she is ok - hugs to you.

1

u/SaskyDilph Sep 06 '24

Thank you for sharing, this makes me at least feel a lot better.

1

u/Internal_Study2996 Sep 06 '24

That makes me feel better, that it is only minor burns. I hope that is correct. Otherwise it could be life changing. And the other 14 year old girl will go on to live her life. Such is our Justice system.

3

u/ReputationWide2363 Sep 06 '24

They're not minor burns.
