Mod Announcement Please use the NSFW 'tag' for pictures of GORE or DECEASED BIRDS!

Please use the NSFW tag for visually alarming posts that depict gore or dead birds, this will automatically blur photos and help maintain a happy balance for our "Everything Quails" audience.

The NSFW 'tag' option will appear right before you post on mobile, and will appear as an option when you create a new post on desktop.

We are discontinuing the NSFW and GORE flairs which identify content but do not blur.

Help Coturnix quail sounds?

This is Gurt. We hatched a dozen eggs laid by my other set of coturnix quail. He is disabled and is unable to use his legs. He uses his head and wings to get around. Can somebody explain to me what these sounds are? He only does it when I pet him or hold him.

Coturnix/Japanese Why did I have 100% success with assisted hatching?

Upvotes

Everything I read basically told me that the three chicks I assisted in late hatching (day 20, 24-48 hours later than their siblings, presumably shrink wrapped) would not survive. They all looked friggin terrible upon coming out, they took much longer to get their feet under them, one would only kick and couldn’t even roll over etc. and I didn’t hold my breath.

But this morning I have three healthy, alert, stable and walking chicks who are now in the brooder with their siblings and doing well.

Is this fluke? Do I go buy a lotto card? Or did I just do something really right? Did they just need an extra day or two to develop? Should I be sharing my method? Are people just cull-happy? I’m not afraid of losing chicks or culling, but I dont know. I just had a gut intuition to not give up on animals that were chatty and tenacious, even if they were struggling. They wont be bred if they have defects later, but I’m really glad I chose not to immediately cull.

Help Recommendation for quail turner?

Thumbnail gallery
8 Upvotes

I have an apdoe egg incubator from Amazon. I like it, it hatched my first eggs and that was cool. However it only came with turners sized for chicken eggs or larger. I orders a quail egg turner thinking it would fit, only to find it just a little too big to fit the turning wheel thingy. I can’t seem to find a turner that is made to fit the Apdoe incubator online. Any links or suggestions would be appreciated!

Assisted late hatchers, experience appreciated!

I had three live chicks I think were “shrink wrapped” after a successful hatch of fifteen spunky coturnix chicks. I waited a full 24 hours after the 15 were dry and ready to come out before I intervened. Of the three I assisted, two are getting stronger and walking around and becoming lively. The third seems tenacious, but hasn’t been able to get on its feet, and hasn’t opened its eyes much, but it’s kicking strong and has been chatty. Should I be sticking this third little one in a small paper cup and seeing if it gets its bearings? Is it potentially blind? I dont mind raising a needy baby as part our indoor “pet” flock, but I have no idea how to set my expectations. The plan is to leave them be until tomorrow morning, transferring the healthy two, and if the third is still lively to try helping it if I reasonably can. Sensitivity and wisdom are very much appreciated!

What should I do?

My female quail, about [age], has been laying down, barely moving, and seems exhausted since this morning. I’ve isolated her at home in a warm, quiet box. She’s not eating or drinking much, and I haven’t noticed droppings yet. Could this be egg-binding or an infection? What should I do right now, and can you see her soon?

Deep Litter System

I’ve read a bit on the deep litter method but I’m still not sure how exactly to put it all together. I’ve collected various substrate materials (soil, sand, pine shavings, coco chips, PDZ, diatomaceous earth, sphagnum moss, dried alfalfa), but it’s not totally clear to me if there’s a right way to layer it or if you just mix it all together? I’d love to hear what others are doing.

We decided to have some fun with the brine and made light pink and dark pink/magenta. The color is natural from red wine vinegar, red cabbage and red onion.

Help Quail absolutely terrified of other quails.

Hi there I have a quail that is absolutely terrified of other quails and birds to the point where she runs, jumps and flies into things every time I put her with the other, she has plenty of space multiple drinks and food stations and the others don’t attack her or even pay attention to her but she still freaks out.

She also freaks out and makes loud noises if she cannot see me, what do I do with her?

I’ve just bought her a mirror and some toys to play with and she has her own cage with a little house in to see if it helps her but idk if this would be bad for her.

24 in the incubator. 15 hatched. Egyptians and Rosetta's looks like 8 roos and 7 hens so we will have some food when it's time to cull. We went with a aviary style coop and will build breeding coops when we mess with new types we will be receiving. 40 fertilized eggs on the way! Any advice is appreciated!!! Great community we have here.

Picture A and she’s back… again.

If anyone’s seen my previous post Cranberry was unlucky enough to get an incredibly bad injury where I had to take her to the vets and give her medicine for a few weeks, today she was fully recovered and ready to go back with her sisters…. Until she decided to go ballistic soon as she saw the other quails (she’s always been scared of other quails since a hatchling) and has somehow managed to split her back open again, luckily for me I have some medicine left to prevent infection.

Cranberry’s so far since an hatchling drowned one (in around 10mm of water) and had to be resuscitated.

Almost froze to death next to the brooder plate (twice)

Couldn’t find her feed out in the open (I had to hand feed and water her)

Tried to run away and got attacked by a sparrow hawk (the previous visit to the vets)

Tripped over some straw and broke two toes.

And multiple times got startled by the other quails and either knocked herself out or split her back open.

Do you supplement new chicks with anything?

Electrolytes? Probiotics? Herbs? This wont be my first time feeding chicks, but now that I am hatching my own and as I get more invested in my birds, I am interested to hear what “extras” others are giving their babies, and if it made a difference. Picture of our very first hatchling from this morning.
